ADRIAN_BROWN AUTUMN_BROWN BRITTANY_ROWLAND CHEVIE_ROACH CLARE ELOVIE_ROWLAND EMRY_ROACH GILBERT_ROWLAND KALEB_ROWLAND MARIO_QUEZADA NATHAN_BROWN SAMANTHA_BROWN SYDNEY_ROACH CHEVIE ROACH See if we can find some beaver. SYDNEY ROACH Yeah. CHEVIE ROACH ??You gotta be quiet [inaudible] CHEVIE ROACH There's a muskrat right here. SYDNEY ROACH [inaudible] CHEVIE ROACH You see it up on that log? SYDNEY ROACH Yeah. CHEVIE ROACH You want to try to shoot it here or you want me to? SYDNEY ROACH If it's [inaudible] yeah, maybe I could. CHEVIE ROACH Come on. Hold this gun and aim it, aim it out there. Feel how comfortable you are with it, okay? SYDNEY ROACH Hmm, okay. CHEVIE ROACH Can you see, can you see down that scope? SYDNEY ROACH Yeah. CHEVIE ROACH Okay. Do you see it? SYDNEY ROACH No. EMRY ROACH Uh-uh. CHEVIE ROACH Oh, there it's back in the water. We just missed it. SYDNEY ROACH Oh, no. CHEVIE ROACH We gotta pay attention. Here's the deal with shooting muskrat, guys. You see how small they were, that little fuzzy thing was? SYDNEY ROACH Yeah. EMRY ROACH Daddy, that looks so cute. I don't wanna kill it, I wanna keep it as a pet. CHEVIE ROACH There's always issue with taking life, and our kids have questions about that. What are you going to eat then if you have to eat it? EMRY ROACH Moose. CHEVIE ROACH I like to teach my kids we respect a animal's life because you need it. Shooting something that we need to do for your furs and food and stuff like that. Your mom's running out of beaver, so now's the time to be able to get a lot of beaver. SYDNEY ROACH Oh, yeah. CHEVIE ROACH Seasons are changing. Everything's coming to life. All the animals come out, and, and they're getting water from the river so that is where we're gonna pull a lot of our resources from. Let's hit the road. MARIO QUEZADA When things change here during the seasons. MARIO QUEZADA It can be quite hectic. There's something to do every day, all day. MARIO QUEZADA But it's the price of the freedom. You hear how hollow that is? That's not good. CLARE No. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, so the foundation on this cabin seems to be a little, a little bad at some points. CLARE Yeah. CLARE Mm-hmm. Yeah. MARIO QUEZADA You know, so it's not. CLARE And it's kind of sinking down from the weight. MARIO QUEZADA Up here in Alaska, when you get extremely bad weather, this starts to happen. MARIO QUEZADA In the summer, all this wood is going to, like, unfreeze and get soft, and then it's just going to, you know, eventually just collapse. CLARE Mm-hmm. MARIO QUEZADA And so, what we need to do is we need to stabilize every side of this. MARIO QUEZADA And from there we're gonna be able to move on and work on the additional siding and wrapping of the cabin. CLARE Yup. MARIO QUEZADA All right. Clare and I are in desperate need of restoring up the foundation for our cabin. Because under the current foundation, our house is gonna collapse. There we go. Perfect. Voila. So we're gonna create a new cross-foundation. Now kick it, like this. Right there. CLARE Yup. MARIO QUEZADA She's lowering. That's good enough. All right, now this guy. She's coming down, down, down. All right. Sweet. CLARE That's it. MARIO QUEZADA Now. CLARE That would go into this? MARIO QUEZADA Right here. All right, there's a little bit. All right. Hold on, grab this. Is that better? Yup. Okay. This needs to, this needs to come out this way a little bit to be more level. It doesn't go all the way out, but that's okay. You know what I mean? CLARE Okay. Pretty darn close. More support's better than none. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, that's why banks won't finance places like this. You know what I mean? CLARE Feel solid to you? MARIO QUEZADA That feels. CLARE Good. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah. Give me, okay, there we go. This will be okay now. Because we're going to do this four more times. You know what I mean? CLARE Yeah. MARIO QUEZADA And then ideally we can, we'll figure it out. NATHAN BROWN Alaska is never going to just hand you what you want. NATHAN BROWN It's going to be difficult at times. NATHAN BROWN There's going to be challenges. The kids just need to understand that. NATHAN BROWN Nothing comes without work. NATHAN BROWN We're each going to pick just a spot along the bank, just far enough from each other. NATHAN BROWN And then, see if we can catch some fish. It's incredibly important for us to have fish for, uh, this subsistence lifestyle. SAMANTHA BROWN I mean, even this like, little shelf here shouldn't be bad. NATHAN BROWN We got all the animals on the farm. We got plenty of red meat, but, uh, it's nice to change up the diet a little bit, and a different protein. SAMANTHA BROWN You push this down, and then you fling it and let it go at the same time, and then you just start reeling. AUTUMN BROWN Sounds [inaudible] when you do it [inaudible] SAMANTHA BROWN It's really just great to do something together as a family. Especially for the kids. Because they need to be able to throw in their poles and just provide for themselves. ADRIAN BROWN There. NATHAN BROWN We're not pulling anything in. But, you know what? Can't always be easy. So, it's good for us to get out here. AUTUMN BROWN I'm tired of it. SAMANTHA BROWN You're tired of it? AUTUMN BROWN I'm so tired of it. NATHAN BROWN You haven't seen any fish, have you? ADRIAN BROWN Uh-uh. Hey! Oh, looks like I caught a shoe. I did it! NATHAN BROWN Once you caught a shoe, it's a sign that maybe the fish aren't here. ADRIAN BROWN Yup. Bad omen. NATHAN BROWN Maybe time to reel in. I say we head back. You don't always catch fish. No fish doesn't mean no fun. Just the beginning and lots of fish in the head. SAMANTHA BROWN Oh yeah. NATHAN BROWN Just warming up. KALEB ROWLAND In Alaska, the growing season is really short. KALEB ROWLAND So, to be completely self-sufficient. KALEB ROWLAND We're trying to expand our options. KALEB ROWLAND The heat from the sun off this side of the house should be a huge boost to the greenhouse. BRITTANY ROWLAND Yeah. What do we need to start with? KALEB ROWLAND I was going to do the beam across one side and then a two by six across the bottom to catch all the posts. KALEB ROWLAND That way we can stand it up and it bridges the weight across all the deck joists here. BRITTANY ROWLAND Okay. KALEB ROWLAND And then we'll have a couple sidewalls and fans and all that good stuff. BRITTANY ROWLAND Very good. Okay, so we need to grab some wood and get started on that now. KALEB ROWLAND Yup. GILBERT ROWLAND Help me put it up. BRITTANY ROWLAND Let's do it. We have not been big gardeners in the past. KALEB ROWLAND Okay. So I think I'll make the front eight foot (2 meters) to the top of the beam. BRITTANY ROWLAND But we're ready to build a greenhouse on our deck that is useful for growing things. KALEB ROWLAND Make some groceries instead of buying groceries. These are what are going to support the beams. Are you able to pick up the end? BRITTANY ROWLAND I think so. KALEB ROWLAND Oh, right there. There we go. One, two, three, go. Okay. BRITTANY ROWLAND That thing ain't going nowhere. KALEB ROWLAND Nope, I don't even have braces on and it's pretty good. Cool. BRITTANY ROWLAND Okay. KALEB ROWLAND Well, now, I think we can start messing with. ELOVIE ROWLAND All aboard! KALEB ROWLAND Rafters. ELOVIE ROWLAND What? BRITTANY ROWLAND Go Gilbert! KALEB ROWLAND Pirates floating by. ELOVIE ROWLAND Whippee! KALEB ROWLAND Whip! CHEVIE ROACH A lot of these muskrat and these beaver, they only come out at this time of year. CHEVIE ROACH We're trying to capitalize on. CHEVIE ROACH Animals that have been under the ice. CHEVIE ROACH Or not here all winter. EMRY ROACH Muskrat. Muskrat. Where are you muskrat? CHEVIE ROACH You gotta really be looking because sometimes they'll stand really still. EMRY ROACH Yeah. CHEVIE ROACH [inaudible] Going out, hunting, having my little girls with me, it's something that I really cherish. CHEVIE ROACH Let's go back in this creek. CHEVIE ROACH I've never been in here before. I like being able to set the standard for my girls. They're my kids, and I want to be a role model for them. Do you see all the water's rippling? SYDNEY ROACH Yeah. CHEVIE ROACH Looks like something was just there. There was a muskrat or a beaver there. Keep your eyes out, Emmy. There's a muskrat right there. EMRY ROACH Oh yeah, right there. CHEVIE ROACH Stay down. SYDNEY ROACH Duck down. EMRY ROACH Oh, I see it. CHEVIE ROACH Don't stand up. [COMMERCIAL BREAK] EMRY ROACH Dad, did you get it? CHEVIE ROACH I thought I did, but I might have missed. If you hit it, it'll be dead. My gun shoots just a little bit low, so I gotta aim just a little bit higher. It's dead. Is that a muskrat or is that a baby beaver? SYDNEY ROACH A baby beaver we got. CHEVIE ROACH Muskrat's long skinny tail. SYDNEY ROACH Too heavy to be a muskrat. EMRY ROACH Yeah. CHEVIE ROACH A beaver is a rodent with a wide tail and a lot bigger than a muskrat. That'll be a perfect one for you to skin, Sydney. SYDNEY ROACH Mm-hmm. CHEVIE ROACH It's a little guy, but that'll make a good, good fur still. And those little ones are really good eatin'. Oven size. SYDNEY ROACH Good enough. CHEVIE ROACH One little beaver's a good start. Go ahead and push off. Let's see what else we got. BRITTANY ROWLAND When I was a kid, I had no patience for gardening. But, now I have the ability to grow things. And I appreciate that. BRITTANY ROWLAND All right, that was my last one. KALEB ROWLAND Good deal. BRITTANY ROWLAND Now what do we do? KALEB ROWLAND We'll cut into our house. BRITTANY ROWLAND Yeah, I bet you didn't think we were going to do that. KALEB ROWLAND The siding I worked so hard to put up. Because the heat from the sun is reflected off of the south side wall of our house, it creates a little microclimate that's 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the surrounding area. BRITTANY ROWLAND So a quarter inch below. KALEB ROWLAND Quarter inch below. Now we gotta go up to the upper mark. We think this will be perfect for creating a little climate where hotter weather plants want to grow. GILBERT ROWLAND Whatcha doin there? KALEB ROWLAND Makin a mess! BRITTANY ROWLAND Elovie! Bring the puppies back to Piper. What next? KALEB ROWLAND I need the um. BRITTANY ROWLAND Rafters? KALEB ROWLAND Yeah, I'm all ready. BRITTANY ROWLAND It's nice to move around some. The weather keeps on getting colder. KALEB ROWLAND I know. BRITTANY ROWLAND It's like it's winter in Alaska instead of spring. KALEB ROWLAND It's wiring. BRITTANY ROWLAND It's, it's wring. KALEB ROWLAND Yeah, winter spring. I've always wanted something to break up this wall, and I think this is the perfect way to do it. BRITTANY ROWLAND Last piece? KALEB ROWLAND Yup. This is a nice addition to our deck, makes it into a super functional space. BRITTANY ROWLAND Is there anything I can do to help? KALEB ROWLAND Uh, not really. GILBERT ROWLAND Cinnamon! KALEB ROWLAND Growing food has never been something that Brittany and I excelled at. BRITTANY ROWLAND Come on puppies. Over this way. Come on puppies. Come on puppies. KALEB ROWLAND And last year, we decided to make a try at it. And we actually did a lot better than we thought we'd do. So, for us getting growing capacity has actually become a priority, even though it never really was before, but that's life. BRITTANY ROWLAND What's wrong with it? KALEB ROWLAND Priorities change. And you adapt to that. MARIO QUEZADA Just living out here brings inherent dangers. There's so many things that can kill you. MARIO QUEZADA Things are melting now and we worry that potentially that our house is gonna collapse. It motivates you to do good work. Just something like along those lines right there. CLARE Mm-hmm. MARIO QUEZADA This is probably our fifth time milling lumber up here. MARIO QUEZADA And it's really efficient process that we've gotten it down to, but it's also a really useful skill to have out here. Clare and I, we don't have enough treated lumber to last these foundational supports we're trying to create. You're not always going to have the opportunity to go to the store or even have the money. And so, we're gonna have to mill up a couple of spruce logs to create the last two beams. All right, let's set it up. Whew, that's loud. CLARE That was quick. MARIO QUEZADA Smooth as a baby's bottom. Look at that. CLARE Then we can shave the sides. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah. CLARE These beams are gonna really last and make us feel a lot better at night. And, um, that's what I'm most looking forward to about this project. MARIO QUEZADA Look at that. That'll go in there real well. All right, should we do it again? CLARE Let's do it again. MARIO QUEZADA All right. CLARE Out here, there's lot of ground movement and changing of the elements. MARIO QUEZADA There you go. CLARE And that is affecting our cabin. MARIO QUEZADA All right, lift high. High. All right. CLARE So, it's definitely essential we get it fit for years to come. We got a little bit. MARIO QUEZADA All right stay. Right there. CLARE Go [inaudible] Oh. MARIO QUEZADA That right? CLARE I've got a lot more on this side, so tap it. MARIO QUEZADA All right, here. Stay on that side. CLARE Okay. MARIO QUEZADA Okay. CLARE That looks. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, that looks good. CLARE Looks pretty straight. MARIO QUEZADA Yup. Looks. CLARE Tighten them up? MARIO QUEZADA Yup. Yeah. Get it nice and tight. Oh, you hear that? Oh. [COMMERCIAL BREAK] CLARE Oh, wow. MARIO QUEZADA You hear that? CLARE Yeah. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah. That's the building going back up. That's nasty. You can see the rotten log just split. You see that? CLARE Yeah. Yeah. Oh. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, that's like how much weight was on that. So, I feel a lot better. CLARE Yeah, me too. MARIO QUEZADA I didn't know I'd feel that good after I heard that, but now our house foundation won't be resting on this rotten log. Now it won't buckle at all. CLARE Oh, oh, that's bad. MARIO QUEZADA Uh, that's pretty bad. I'm just gonna. CLARE Just, just put that back. MARIO QUEZADA Put, put that back. Oh. You know, we've got a nice, safe foundation. And now it's time to just kind of make the outside safe. CLARE Oh, right next to the dog turds. Oh, that's nice. MARIO QUEZADA All right, she's coming down. CLARE Cool. MARIO QUEZADA Months, months of procrastination coming to an end right now. CLARE I know. MARIO QUEZADA The next step is gonna be to tear down the railing that's covering up our windows. There you go. And that's gonna allow us to be able to wrap inside the addition so that we're able to have a more waterproof and more weather resistant structure. Awesome. And it will give us ultimately a nicer looking house out here. Tear this crap off. It's still sealed so it hurts nothing. I just need to have a nice, flat side to put siding on. CLARE Yup. CHEVIE ROACH It's important for our kids to know we're not going to beat an animal at its own game. CHEVIE ROACH We have to be patient. We have to know where to be and anticipate where it's going to come up next. CHEVIE ROACH When I was young, like little older that you Sydney. SYDNEY ROACH Mm-hmm. CHEVIE ROACH I spend a lot of time in places just like this. My friends [inaudible] come out in the woods. CHEVIE ROACH And having a good time starting camp fires. CHEVIE ROACH And probably missin' tons of beaver and no tent or anything. SYDNEY ROACH Gosh. CHEVIE ROACH It was fun. EMRY ROACH Daddy, I saw a splash! I see a splash over there. CHEVIE ROACH There you go. Emry, drive. You see it, Sydney? There's a beaver up there. EMRY ROACH I don't know what I'm doing. I see it. CHEVIE ROACH Look how fast it swims. See how fast that big beaver swims? SYDNEY ROACH Oh yeah, definitely. CHEVIE ROACH Oh, we, look how big that tail was. A blanket, they call that. A big beaver. SYDNEY ROACH Blanket? CHEVIE ROACH That's the size of its hide. It's a blanket. SYDNEY ROACH Oh. EMRY ROACH Do you see it right there? CHEVIE ROACH I shot it right in the back of the head. SYDNEY ROACH Gosh. CHEVIE ROACH Sydney's been out with me before and you can really see it. She's grabbing the net. SYDNEY ROACH Oh, I see blood. CHEVIE ROACH She's getting to the right side of the boat. SYDNEY ROACH Get in here, sir. CHEVIE ROACH She understands that we have to get it before it sinks. That's a normal sized beaver there. Way bigger than the other one, huh? SYDNEY ROACH Yeah, definitely. CHEVIE ROACH Emry's grasping where she's going to see the beaver, and, but they're learning, you know, they're getting it. They're becoming little hunters. Just keep on going and see what we run into. NATHAN BROWN We're not the only ones out here looking for the next meal. There's other animals out there too, such as the bears and wolves. NATHAN BROWN Everything out here is just trying to survive. Just like us. NATHAN BROWN This is our first time fishing the Copper River Basin. SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah. NATHAN BROWN Well, this spot's pretty cool. SAMANTHA BROWN Ooh, yeah it is. NATHAN BROWN I brought some whitefish. SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah. NATHAN BROWN And we'll just put a hook on, a nice weight, keep it down on the bottom. SAMANTHA BROWN So, you don't have to sit there and reel it in. NATHAN BROWN Cast the reel, no, not with burbot, no. SAMANTHA BROWN So, we just get to sit and hang out, huh? NATHAN BROWN Sort of. For the last couple of years, we've been wanting to get out to this spot, springtime last year. It was just flooded out to the point where you couldn't access it. SAMANTHA BROWN I mean, really, the last day we went was in Oregon, and we went to a farm surplus store, and I ended up buying gloves for delivering sheep and goat bait. NATHAN BROWN Gloves and, uh, chainsaw sharpening stones. It was a great day. My idea of a good time. SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah. NATHAN BROWN Okay, here's that. I think we only really need three to four feet of water, but you can just pick a spot. SAMANTHA BROWN Beautiful. NATHAN BROWN It's nice for Samantha and I to get out and do some different fishing at a different spot that we've never fished before. It allows us to push our boundaries beyond where we've gone before. For the kids too. They can, you know, prove that they can take care of themselves for a short while. Oh. SAMANTHA BROWN What did you catch? NATHAN BROWN Just some river stuff. SAMANTHA BROWN Is that moose hair? NATHAN BROWN Yeah. SAMANTHA BROWN That's pretty cool. Now if we could just catch a couple of burbot. Oh, what did I do now. Oh, Jiminy Christmas, what is happening? [COMMERCIAL BREAK] SAMANTHA BROWN I'm not sure if there's a fish, a chunk of ice or what. Oh, I got the tree. On the other side it's like curvier. Oh, heavens to Betsy. This is going to be interesting. NATHAN BROWN You got it? Or you need my help? SAMANTHA BROWN Maybe. It's like stuck stuck. Oh, great. Come on now. Behave yourself. NATHAN BROWN Oh, there it is. SAMANTHA BROWN Hey. I have no hook left. It's not the best fishing day. KALEB ROWLAND In a place like Alaska, the grocery store is 300 miles away. But, the greenhouse is right outside my door. And it's going to be full of food that I don't have to travel down the highway to gather. KALEB ROWLAND Time to get the roof on. KALEB ROWLAND We're using this polycarbonate sheeting. It's a nice clear plastic sheeting that lets sunlight through. KALEB ROWLAND And traps the UV on the inside so that, um, the plants can grow. BRITTANY ROWLAND So, I'll hand you these pieces and you'll tack it down? KALEB ROWLAND Yup. BRITTANY ROWLAND Ready? KALEB ROWLAND Yup. GILBERT ROWLAND As soon as the walls are in here and the sun comes up, it will be warm. BRITTANY ROWLAND I hope so. That's the goal. KALEB ROWLAND I am really happy with how this greenhouse is turning out. Losing our reliance on a grocery store is power. It's something that nobody can take away from us. Okey-dokey. BRITTANY ROWLAND And that's how it's done. Well, roof's on. KALEB ROWLAND Yup. BRITTANY ROWLAND What's the next step? KALEB ROWLAND We need to build the garden boxes. BRITTANY ROWLAND Okay. KALEB ROWLAND Which are going to be all the way along this wall and that wall, right? BRITTANY ROWLAND Uh-hmm. Yup. Cool. KALEB ROWLAND Oh, yeah. Let's make her happen. BRITTANY ROWLAND All righty. KALEB ROWLAND Working with Brittany on this greenhouse has been great. I'll cut the 2x12. We've been working really well as a team, whether it was running a piece of equipment or putting screws in for me. And I think together. BRITTANY ROWLAND Oh, honey. KALEB ROWLAND We are building an awesome little building. BRITTANY ROWLAND Want me to do the other side? KALEB ROWLAND Sure. All right. Up she goes. BRITTANY ROWLAND I am pretty impressed with how fast this is going. KALEB ROWLAND Yeah, we're making lots of progress. BRITTANY ROWLAND What do you think, honey? Want a kiss over the bed? KALEB ROWLAND Oh, yes, I would love to kiss over the bed. BRITTANY ROWLAND Hi. Let's go get the next bit. KALEB ROWLAND The waterproofing? BRITTANY ROWLAND Yes! SYDNEY ROACH Here in Shageluk growing up, it's really fun, but you have to be quite wise to actually know what the heck you're doing. CHEVIE ROACH Let's try to get this beaver, see if it comes back up. SYDNEY ROACH Look, right there. CHEVIE ROACH Good eye, Bean. Way to be paying attention. SYDNEY ROACH Oh, my gosh. CHEVIE ROACH Go ahead, push off, Bean. Let's get after this thing. SYDNEY ROACH Yeah, I just saw it. EMRY ROACH I get the opportunity to fish out, to fish it out. CHEVIE ROACH Here it is. Here, it's your turn. SYDNEY ROACH Am I doing it? CHEVIE ROACH Here. I've shot a couple beaver. And so, I think it's a good opportunity to have Sydney get a shot at a beaver. Let's see what happens here. Okay. Go ahead and put one in the chamber. SYDNEY ROACH Okay. CHEVIE ROACH All the way. Cock the gun, with the bolt. It's right here in front of you. Hurry up. SYDNEY ROACH I know. I know. I know. Just watch me. CHEVIE ROACH Okay? SYDNEY ROACH Okay. CHEVIE ROACH Do it. SYDNEY ROACH Um, okay. CHEVIE ROACH You gotta, you gotta be aggressive with it. You can't just be nervous. SYDNEY ROACH I know. CHEVIE ROACH Be confident. Okay? Okay, it's swimming on the other side. Just wait. See it right there? Squeeze the trigger. [COMMERCIAL BREAK] CHEVIE ROACH Oh, you hit it? Damn right you did. Holy (bleep). SYDNEY ROACH I can't believe I actually shot the beaver. CHEVIE ROACH One shot, one kill. A big beaver, a blanket. Good shot, Bean. Okay, ready Emry? EMRY ROACH I guess. CHEVIE ROACH Here we go. Get the beaver. Come on Emry, get it. Emry, hurry up. SYDNEY ROACH Yeah, like something. EMRY ROACH I can't make it. SYDNEY ROACH You should just do it. CHEVIE ROACH Okay. I remember being with my dad and my uncles and making good shots at a young age. Okay, give me that net. And their excitement for me and it was the same feeling I had for her. We got to get it before it sinks. We got it. SYDNEY ROACH Mine's a little bigger than yours, I just realized. CHEVIE ROACH Yeah, that's your first beaver. SYDNEY ROACH Yay! CHEVIE ROACH Right in the head, I just smoked it. Sixty-pound beaver. Holy smokes. SYDNEY ROACH Yeah, gosh, I got the biggest beaver. I would never have known it was today. CHEVIE ROACH That's why these spring hunts are so important for you guys, you get out here and you're under pressure, forced to perform, whether it's dipping a beaver out of the water or shooting a beaver, it's all real life. SYDNEY ROACH I bet you shot a good thing like that too when it was your first beaver, right? CHEVIE ROACH Oh, yeah. You know, that's the great thing about being a parent is that, you know, I get to relive all my firsts through your guy's eyes. Nothing like being a dad and seeing your little girl smile like that. Because she's happy that you're happy and it was a really great moment. I have way more fun out here when you guys are with me than I do by myself. So, I'm glad that you're out here. SYDNEY ROACH Oh, my gosh. How many we can get. CHEVIE ROACH Another one. Your turn, Emry. You can get one. Okay. Another day. Let's take these beaver back to the cabin. We got some skinning to do. You're doing good too, Emmy. KALEB ROWLAND This is the biggest project we've taken on, on the property here this year. There's a lot more that could be done. But, you never know when it could happen or when it might not happen. BRITTANY ROWLAND That was really fun to watch. KALEB ROWLAND It's always fun cutting out the holes and it kind of defines your wall. BRITTANY ROWLAND Yeah. Seven years ago, this land was just trees. KALEB ROWLAND All right, what should we install first? BRITTANY ROWLAND The fan up there. To think back on how far we have come. Working together. And every year we've been able to clear something more or add something. KALEB ROWLAND What the heck? BRITTANY ROWLAND It's been amazing. KALEB ROWLAND That's lame. BRITTANY ROWLAND No, turn it around, Kaleb. KALEB ROWLAND Oh, right, we're blowing it this way. BRITTANY ROWLAND There you go. KALEB ROWLAND Okay, well there's one. Get the other one in. BRITTANY ROWLAND All right. KALEB ROWLAND And this one is mounted on the inside. The idea is for those fans to suck air in from one side and blow it out the other side. That way when it's hotter than the temperature that the greenhouse should be, we can cool down the greenhouse so that we don't bake our plants. BRITTANY ROWLAND See if it works. There we go. KALEB ROWLAND It works beautifully. It's gonna feel so good. BRITTANY ROWLAND No kidding. KALEB ROWLAND We are ready to put dirt in here. BRITTANY ROWLAND Cool. GILBERT ROWLAND Kids first, yahoo! KALEB ROWLAND I only did two scoops for Gilbert so you know babe. BRITTANY ROWLAND Yeah, my scoops are small. There you go Ellie. KALEB ROWLAND Every load of dirt here is closer to being able to grow veggies. The food we harvest from this greenhouse is going to be 100 percent organic, gluten free, ready to eat deliciousness. No pesticides or all the other junk that commercial food gets added to it. ELOVIE ROWLAND Where should I put it, mom? KALEB ROWLAND Last load of dirt, guys. BRITTANY ROWLAND Yeah, right about there looks good. Gilbert, I think over here needs more. Look at that! ELOVIE ROWLAND Yay, I can dig. BRITTANY ROWLAND Oh, man. KALEB ROWLAND Wow, that was a lot of work getting this dirt in here. BRITTANY ROWLAND No kidding. ELOVIE ROWLAND Well, it was fun. KALEB ROWLAND It's both pretty and black. BRITTANY ROWLAND Yeah. KALEB ROWLAND You guys did a great job. Maybe we should put the plastic across the front. BRITTANY ROWLAND I think that's a good idea. KALEB ROWLAND I think the plastic is the last thing we have to do to be done with this greenhouse. BRITTANY ROWLAND Let's get this done. MARIO QUEZADA Spring has come. MARIO QUEZADA And during those long workdays everything that we can do to improve the quality of our lives out here really matters. MARIO QUEZADA This is pretty much it it's in the bag, you know, I mean It's halfway in the bag. All right, it's off the shelf. Look it's we just need to wrap it. CLARE And then side it. CLARE Yeah. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah. All right. Let's get to it. CLARE Okay. MARIO QUEZADA Having this lumber sealed is gonna create another weather barrier and it's really gonna put us at peace to know that our house foundation is safe. It's finished. MARIO QUEZADA All right, there you go. Run this guy for me. All right. It's pretty windy. CLARE Windy. MARIO QUEZADA This is loud. This is really loud. All right, do you want to hand me this stapler? CLARE We're all about aesthetics and being proud of our home. Not only is it going to be wind and water resistant, it's going to just pull the whole cabin together. All good? MARIO QUEZADA Yup. CLARE Just the other day. It was really nice when we were doing this project and let me know what the weather is too. It's unfortunate. It's a little bit windy. It's making this a little harder. MARIO QUEZADA There's no more window. Is there another one there? CLARE I'm pretty sure there's another one on the corner. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah. So, now I'm gonna bop over to the left. CLARE Okay. MARIO QUEZADA Thank you. CLARE Wow, this is gonna look so nice. MARIO QUEZADA Right? So, then. CLARE Oh, careful. MARIO QUEZADA This one's a little, little warped. CLARE Whoa. MARIO QUEZADA Help. [COMMERCIAL BREAK] MARIO QUEZADA I'm okay. I feel like that guy that the, the French guy. CLARE The French guy? MARIO QUEZADA The Robert or Allen something, right, that free solos all those buildings. CLARE Want me to move the ladder a little bit? MARIO QUEZADA It's all right. CLARE Nice. MARIO QUEZADA There we go. And I'll get up and put that last piece of trim on there and we'll be done. CLARE I'm turning my back. BRITTANY ROWLAND Wow. Some clear magic, all right. Oh, it's already a little warmer in here. KALEB ROWLAND Yeah. BRITTANY ROWLAND No, not really. I just put my hands in my pockets. KALEB ROWLAND Springtime is here, summer is coming. BRITTANY ROWLAND It'll be fun to see how long it takes some of these big chunks to loosen up. KALEB ROWLAND Before I know it, it's gonna be wintertime again. There's going to be hunting to do, there's going to be harvest to be done. BRITTANY ROWLAND Oh, man. KALEB ROWLAND But for now, we're just going to enjoy this time. And we'll get to watch the fruit of our labor grow. CHEVIE ROACH We're going to skin this beaver. KALEB ROWLAND All summer long. EMRY ROACH It's furry. CHEVIE ROACH With a beaver. I like to start at their mouth because you could get underneath their skin right here without worrying about hitting their guts. EMRY ROACH Daddy, um, it's teeth, it's teeth on the bottom, it grew. CHEVIE ROACH Yeah, yeah, their teeth are always growing. EMRY ROACH Do they still grow even if they're dead? CHEVIE ROACH The teeth? Oh, yeah, no, for sure. They'll just keep on growing and growing and growing. That's why you got to skin him right away. If you leave it too long, he will just come back and his teeth will be this long. SYDNEY ROACH No, you're kidding. CHEVIE ROACH Maybe I am. Okay, so what I like to do is cut their feet off. Just find that soft spot and cut it right there and break it a little bit. EMRY ROACH Oh, cool. This looks so much like Chevelle's hand. CHEVIE ROACH It's kind of creepy. But anyways, tail. Okay. We'll keep that. See how cool that feels. Here's the back foot. That's what makes them swim so fast. Look at that. SYDNEY ROACH Oh, my gosh. EMRY ROACH Their nails are even longer. CHEVIE ROACH Yup. SYDNEY ROACH Kind of look like the real housewives. CHEVIE ROACH Chevelle's hand and the real housewives, you guys are a trip. SAMANTHA BROWN I think I'm about fished out, darling. NATHAN BROWN Yeah? SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah. It doesn't seem like it's going to happen today. But I've had a great time. NATHAN BROWN Yeah, it'd be better with fish, but it's still good. SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah. NATHAN BROWN It's still fun. SAMANTHA BROWN I'm ready. NATHAN BROWN Wrap it up and get packed up here. MARIO QUEZADA She fits! She's a beaut. Okay. Let's get these ladders out of the way. CHEVIE ROACH Beaver generally are really fat. They got a lot of fat on them. And so sometimes with a fat animal, it's nice to be able to hang them. They'll drip that fat. And it makes them taste better. EMRY ROACH It's starting to smell nice. KALEB ROWLAND Guess what, Brittany. Last screw. BRITTANY ROWLAND Are you done? KALEB ROWLAND Yeah. BRITTANY ROWLAND Oh, man. KALEB ROWLAND We got it done, babe. BRITTANY ROWLAND I think we need to step down here and, and take the full picture. KALEB ROWLAND And take it in. MARIO QUEZADA Look at how uniform the house looks now. You know, we can always get in there with nice little paintbrushes. CLARE Now that is a house. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah. Wow. CLARE It looks really good, yeah. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, it looks really (bleep) good. BRITTANY ROWLAND This is gorgeous. Now all we need is the sun to do its job. KALEB ROWLAND This summer you'll look in the front here and all you'll be able to see is green. CHEVIE ROACH It's important to be out here and to be able to pass this stuff down to you guys and show you how to do it. Whether you live like this and do this as you get older or you go on to do other things, it's important that you know how to live off the land and all seasons. We are the caretakers of our land here. SAMANTHA BROWN You ready? NATHAN BROWN Yeah. SAMANTHA BROWN Cool. CHEVIE ROACH And a natural resource will produce time and time again. NATHAN BROWN Lead the way. SAMANTHA BROWN Wish me luck on that one. CHEVIE ROACH As long as you take care of it. BRITTANY ROWLAND All right, let's go see what the hooligans are doing. KALEB ROWLAND Sounds good. CHEVIE ROACH Whether it's the clothes you're wearing or the food you're eating, it comes from somewhere. Something sacrifices for you to have it. We're able to see it. And we have to process it and our hands are bloody, but we know where it came from. That's how you eat a beaver tail. Good job Emry. SYDNEY ROACH Yum yum. CHEVIE ROACH Good job Sydney. There you go. [SNAP-IN] MARIO QUEZADA But the one I'm most concerned about is this one right here. CLARE You wanna double it up? MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, we're gonna do one beam here. CLARE Yup. MARIO QUEZADA So, we'll go and find one spruce tree and mill it and put one right here. CLARE Length-wise. MARIO QUEZADA Put one right here length-wise. All right. CLARE Good, yeah. MARIO QUEZADA Awesome, let's get out of here. There's quite a few challenges to building out here. They're off the road system. And the fact that you're not two minutes away from the nearest hardware store, even creating your own lumber out here takes a lot of hard work. That's nice. That one's nice. So, we need a couple of spruce trees. There's one right there, and then there's one right over there. And I think if we get the bottom portion of it, you know, I think we'll be able to mill it up into a nice little beam. CLARE Okay. Harvesting these spruce trees. They are a renewable resource around here and is gonna be a great base for the stabilization. MARIO QUEZADA So, this'll be the first one. CLARE Okay. MARIO QUEZADA Let's cut it down here. Falling. CLARE Hey. We'll measure out our. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, we'll measure it and then we can cut ourselves a nice beam. Right here is fine. Yup. I'll cut right here, okay? Awesome. Yeah, well there's one. CLARE This looks like a good size. MARIO QUEZADA Yeah. That's a great size beam. Let's go ahead and get it loaded. CLARE Okay. MARIO QUEZADA All right, just one more beam okay? Good job. CLARE Next.
