ANTHONY BRIAN ECKBERT_VON_WITZLEBEN FUZZ GROUP LANDO_NORRIS LINDA LUCAS MECHANIC NARRATOR RECEPTIONIST TIM TONY UNKNOWN_SPEAKER NARRATOR This time on Car SOS, a red hot relic from the hot hatch era. TIM 113 horsepower under the bonnet, Fuzzbot. NARRATOR That's gone ice cold. TIM We've got trouble underneath here. TIM Tim buys some delicious looking spares. TIM Volkswagen original parts. Are you joking me? NARRATOR Whilst Fuzz orders off menu. FUZZ Well, that looks delicious with chips. NARRATOR And the stage is set to make another deserving owner's automotive dream come true. ANTHONY Is that my car? TIM Hello, mate. ANTHONY Whoa! TIM How you doing? FUZZ So here we are in lovely Tamworth, Staffordshire. TIM I like it round here, pal. FUZZ Anyway. Come on. We are here for one reason and one reason only. And that is to pick up a Volkswagen Polo G40. FUZZ Now, hold on just a doggone minute there. TIM Go on. FUZZ A Polo G40. What is a G40 Polo? TIM Well, it's no big surprise to me that you didn't know what the G40 was, Fuzz. And it's mega rare. You do not see them. The G40 was a supercharged Polo. FUZZ A supercharged Polo? TIM Yeah. FUZZ From the factory? TIM Yes. FUZZ A model that they actually made? TIM Yes. The two things that shouldn't go together that make perfection. NARRATOR Yes. The standard Mk2 Polo was a small, dreary and not very attractive family hatchback. A car that's about as exciting as watching the world paint drying championships. However, in 1987, VW decided to release a limited edition, marrying its 1.3l engine with a supercharger, a concept that's a bit like strapping a jet engine to your Nan's mobility scooter. It's no surprise this apparently bonkers idea raised a few petrolheads' eyebrows, because the G40 packed double the horsepower of its Plain Jane Polo sibling, making it three seconds faster to 60 miles an hour with a top speed exceeding 120. And whilst most hot hatches of the era struggled with the dreaded turbo lag, the G-Lader supercharger delivered its power as smoothly as a hot knife through butter. So there's no better way to mark the Polo's 50th birthday than by restoring one of these rare classics. FUZZ So today we're meeting Tony and Linda. TIM Yeah. Now they are the parents of Anthony. Right? FUZZ Right. So Anthony owns the car? TIM Yeah, Anthony's got the car. FUZZ Right. Okay, but that's great. I'm really looking forward to seeing this car. LINDA Hello. TIM Hello? Are you expecting us? LINDA Oh, yes. TIM Oh, good. Linda. Lovely to meet you, Tim. You all right? Nice to meet you. TIM All right, guys. FUZZ How are you doing, Tony? TIM I'm fine, thank you. TIM First and foremost, this is Anthony's house, right? LINDA It is. FUZZ It is. Okay. LINDA He's at the hospital at the moment. TIM Well, where is this super little car, then? TONY It's in the garage. TIM Okay. Can we have a look? TONY Yes. TIM Oh, Tony, you're obscuring the good bit. We can't see the bit that it's on, look, you're hiding it. Go on. Move out of the way! Shift yourself. There. FUZZ Do you mind if I go in and have a look? There it is. LINDA Not at all. TONY There it is. FUZZ I know, I know it is, G40. TIM It's all about the supercharger. The thing that should never. That is like putting us together, innit? FUZZ It's like I'm the supercharger. TIM Right. FUZZ You're the Polo. TIM Shut your face. Get around it. Shall we go and have a chat about Anthony? LINDA Yes. TIM Come on then. We'll leave you to it. Fuzzbot. TIM Okay, cool. TIM Wander over this way. FUZZ It does look so weird. This tiny little engine with a supercharger. And look, that glove that's there to protect the inlet, to stop things going down, if I just twitch the supercharger pulley either way, I mean, look, there's the pull, there's the push. It's moving an awfully large amount of air. So that is ramming loads of air, which means this engine is going to have been working at its absolute engineering limit, and that means it's going to wear out much more quickly than it ordinarily would if it were normally aspirated. TIM How would you describe Anthony to somebody, well, who hasn't met him? LINDA He's a quiet guy. TIM Okay. LINDA He doesn't like a fuss. He just enjoys his work. TIM What does Anthony do? TONY He's an electrician. Industrial electrician. TIM Right. Now, where did the car come from? How come it's in his life? TONY He did some work for a friend of his and as part payment was the car. The Polo. TIM Fair play. TONY But, he didn't realise at the time how rare it was. TIM Ah, right? So he drove it home and enjoyed driving it for a few years? TONY No, no. He took it and took it for an MOT and it failed. LINDA And then put it back in the garage, intended to work on it. Just never got round to it with work, money, the cost of it. His wife has asked him to get rid of it countless times and he just refused. No, it's, I'm keeping it. I will at some point try and fix it. [LAUGHS] TIM Is he a petrolhead? TIM Yes. TIM That's gutting. So he's never actually really driven the car? TONY No. TIM And how long ago was that? How many years ago? TONY 17 years ago. TIM What? TONY 17. FUZZ So he's owned the car. TONY It's been stuck in the garage for seventeen years. FUZZ Now. Okay, slightly worn hinges. We've got a decent interior and the mileage says nearly 116,000 miles. Now, that might not seem like an awful lot for a modern day car, but for a car of this era, which is about 1991, that is a huge mileage. This car is probably at the end of its natural life. We've got to get it back from the brink. TIM Considering how many years have gone by since 2007, why hasn't he recently got on with it? What's happened in Anthony's life? LINDA February '22, 2022, he broke one ankle, fractured the other, almost broke that. So he was in a wheelchair. TIM What happened? How did he do that? LINDA He was working. He was on a flat roof, and the door into the warehouse blew shut. And the windows. And it blew closed, and one of them had to find a way off the roof, and he volunteered, and he just tried to suspend himself off with his fingers and he landed awkward. He got the injuries from that. We didn't realise at the time, but retrospectively, we now know that the reason his ankles broke so easily was because he had a more serious illness, which was not known at that time. TONY And in December last year, they found out he'd got cancer. Yeah. TIM What have you been told by the doctors? LINDA He's got stage four, which is... TIM As far as it gets. LINDA Yeah. As far as it gets. But we can hope. They say he's doing well. He's responding well to the chemotherapy, and we can just hope for the best. TIM The car's in his garage. It's going. Where does he think it's going? TONY He thinks it's going to a friend. I know, a friend of a friend has got a garage, a workshop just to get it up and running. TONY Right. Here's my promise to you. We will get the car done and on the road and he will be driving it. TONY Absolutely brilliant. TIM Oh, the G40 is outdoors. LINDA Whey. TIM Oh, yeah. TIM Well, come on, let's wear ourselves out and get it in the back of here and get on with it. TIM Come on then. FUZZ Great meeting you both. TONY Nice to meet you. FUZZ Yeah. Okay. That's cool. LINDA Thank you so much. TONY Yeah. Thank you very much. TIM Fuzz, we found a G40. I think considering how uncool the Polo was, and it was seen as that car that, couldn't you afford a Golf? FUZZ Yeah. TIM But Volkswagen are like, yeah, it was still a good car, but people, the world didn't really see it that way. So they supercharged one and all of a sudden that took a Polo and made it cool. FUZZ I'm excited by this car, and I'm not normally excited by any cars from the 1990s. NARRATOR Yes. Let's just see if he feels the same once he's got it up on the ramp and revealed its secrets. Because with fewer than 50 G40s left on the road, finding anything that needs replacing isn't going to be easy. TIM I just can't get my head over the fact that I'm looking at a Volkswagen Polo with a supercharger in it. Uh, dude. Cracks. Welding. Look at that. FUZZ Oh, yeah, down there, actually. It's quite common with cars that have got a lot of load put through what is a box section made of fairly thin steel, and the only way to avoid that is not just to weld it up, but to strengthen it as well. TIM Right. Well, that's your problem, Fuzz. FUZZ Right. Come on then. FUZZ Oh hold on. Oh, yeah. Found something already. Somebody has messed with this car. They've lowered the suspension. And as such, these springs are loose in their mountings. That should not be the case. The drive shaft has knocked into the body because of those lowering springs. TIM Well, Fuzz, what we're looking at under here is going to get a whole lot worse. FUZZ Yeah. END OF PART 1 PART 2 NARRATOR Tim and Fuzz have got their hands full with this ultra rare supercharged G40, the teenage troublemaker edition of the Polo family runaround that's already causing its new foster parents all manner of headaches. FUZZ So, look, the suspension's got problems. The engine's probably got problems. We need to get the supercharger looked at just to make sure that it's okay. NARRATOR Yes, it's a small car with a big list of problems, all of which the boys are going to have to solve to stand a chance of ending its 17 year stint of being garage bound. First off, there are the front gearbox mounts. We know they're riddled with cracks, but the big question is, are they hiding any additional damage underneath them? NARRATOR Next, because the entire car is currently sitting lower to the ground than a snake's belly, they'll need to completely rebuild the suspension set up on all four wheels. NARRATOR Then there's the big one, the supercharger, the absolute beating heart of this car. But after working its socks off for over 100,000 miles, can fuzz bring it back to life with some minor surgery? Or will it require a full transplant? On top of that, it will need a full respray and set of original G40 specific wheels. TIM I still can't get my head around the fact they took a Polo, Fuzz, which was the car that people didn't want. You wanted the Golf. This was the poor man's Golf, right? Which was not doing so well for Volkswagen. FUZZ Yeah. TIM And let's supercharge it. FUZZ Trying to make something of it, trying to give it a reason to exist. TIM But was it the swan song? Was that it? Was it like, this car is dying? Let's see if it can change public perception of the Polo. FUZZ But Polo has carried on being manufactured for many, many years. TIM But could that possibly have been because of this? NARRATOR While Tim ponders on whether the G40 was the saviour of the Polo, the team are straight to work on stripping Anthony's car down to its shell. So the Fuzzbot can get a better look at those cracked gearbox mounts and the chassis around them. FUZZ What has happened, enthusiastic driving has moved the engine and gearbox backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards. A bit like getting a little piece of metal, a little metal bar and bending it backwards and forwards and backwards and forwards. Eventually it just breaks in half. NARRATOR Ironically, Anthony's inability to drive his car for the past 17 years has saved his engine and gearbox from disaster. FUZZ What we need to do is take the whole of this assembly apart and re-engineer it to make it much, much stronger. NARRATOR But to do that, Fuzz first needs to remove the existing mounts from the chassis so that the cracked sections can be repaired and reinforced. FUZZ Once I manage to break away all the remaining spot welds, then hopefully this whole L section will come out and then we can see what's underneath, because what we may find are more cracks. And if there are more cracks, we've got to go even further with this car. It's not looking pretty though at the moment. FUZZ I don't know about the car, but I'm finding this quite stressful myself. NARRATOR The G40 is built on the same chassis and engine mounts as the standard Mk2 Polo, but because it produces over double the amount of power, metal fatigue in this area of the engine bay is a common problem. FUZZ Here we are. There's our first piece off, but as you can see, it's very thin steel and it's reinforced by this little pressing here. But unfortunately there's no strength at this point here, nor on this flat section here. And that's where the flexing has been going on. NARRATOR And as the other sections come away, things are a whole lot worse underneath. FUZZ So we can see here where the crack has occurred. And what has probably happened is this area here has completely detached from the front member of the car. So the engine and gearbox have actually at one point... and then it's been welded up back in this position rather than actually being jacked up and put back into place. But what's happened is water has got into this box section here, down in through there. And it has sat at the bottom here and it's corroded through the steel. We've got a lot of holes that shouldn't be there. A lot of cracks that shouldn't be there, and a whole heap of movement that has gone on. It all needs to be repaired for this car to regain its structural integrity. Without it, it's scrap. NARRATOR So what was originally just repairing some small pieces of cracked gearbox mount has morphed into a much bigger job. So while Fuzz and the team press on END OF PART 2 PART 3 NARRATOR Tim's on a very special pilgrimage to the home of VW. Covering an area greater than 910 football pitches, the Wolfsburg plant is the largest car factory on the planet. TIM Guess what this is. What is this car? It is a prototype Golf. NARRATOR It employs over 70,000 people who turn out almost half a million cars a year. TIM A Mk3 Golf GTI. Would you believe they actually made the Polo [inaudible]? And on the end there, a four wheel drive Golf. The Golf Country. This place is amazing. TIM Oh my word. This is Autostadt, basically car city. And if there's any place on the planet's going to know why they put a supercharger on the Polo, surely it's going to be somebody that works here. Bye. Help. This place is amazing. Wow. NARRATOR Yes, it's right here that someone took this seemingly bonkers decision to take one of their dullest models and supercharge it. TIM Who made the decision to put a supercharger on that? Supercharge. the thing of supercars? Nope. Let's put it on a Polo. I mean, it is the ugliest car that they've ever made. NARRATOR To find out exactly why this ugly duckling got a supercharged makeover, Tim's meeting the man with all the answers, VW historian, Eckbert von Witzleben. TIM My goodness, look at this thing. From what I've just seen to that, why did they do it? Why put a supercharge in supercars in a little Polo? ECKBERT VON WITZLEBEN I think they wanted to push up the vehicle. So in the mean of the public, the car is a small one, not powerful. And they want to pimp up the car. TIM Pimp up the car. ECKBERT VON WITZLEBEN Yes. TIM So was it to change public opinion? ECKBERT VON WITZLEBEN Public opinion is this is a car for drove to the supermarket. TIM Right. ECKBERT VON WITZLEBEN It's not a sporty car. And I think with the G40 they want to change the image of the vehicle. TIM And did it work? ECKBERT VON WITZLEBEN Yes. With the G40 the opinion changed of the public and they take more units and they produce it in the series since 1991. TIM This is the car for me that changed my opinion of the Polo. ECKBERT VON WITZLEBEN Yes, so. TIM So it worked. ECKBERT VON WITZLEBEN Yes, it was, for the G40 was a game changer for the Polo. NARRATOR The G40. Innovative use of a supercharger demonstrated the enormous potential of this technology on smaller engines, and paved the way for the more powerful G60 used on other sporty models like the Corrado and Golf Mk2 Rallye. The success of the G40 fundamentally shifted the Polo's popularity, making it into one of Volkswagen's most beloved models. But before Tim gets back to the UK, he's got another problem to solve. TIM Typical Fuzz. Whilst you're there, can you pick some parts up, please? Hello? Hi. Is this parts department? RECEPTIONIST Can I help you? TIM My colleague has texted me a part number. RECEPTIONIST Yeah. TIM For some parts for a VW Polo Mk2 facelift. RECEPTIONIST Give me a moment. TIM I don't know what it is. Do you have any? RECEPTIONIST Yeah. Can you wait? TIM Can you have a look at. RECEPTIONIST I have three in stock. TIM Okay, great. TIM Volkswagen original part. Are you joking me? NARRATOR Sometimes Fuzz's jokes really are the wurst. Thankfully, he's a bit better on the tools because after some serious graft, the remaining pieces of engine mount are removed. FUZZ Now we have to address the problems of the individual components. So this is the top bit here. And it's got a load of cracks and it's slightly out of shape as well. Now we could just fabricate a new one and be done with it. But it is repairable, and there are a couple of neat little tricks that we'll use to stop these cracks spreading and tracking along. So what we're going to do is drill a neat little hole at the end of each fracture. Now that acts like a firebreak for the crack. And then once we've made that little firebreak, we're going to weld everything up. So looking here, I can see the end of one just here, we've got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight holes to drill. FUZZ So now it's time for a little bit of grinding out to make these cracks or these fractures into little V shapes. Well, it reminds me. I better book an appointment with the dentist. FUZZ So now what we need to do is weld in these valleys here, and those valleys will hopefully help the weld penetrate all the way through to the other side. Right. Mask on. Clamped up. Let's go. FUZZ So what I now need to do, just clean that up a little bit, make it look a bit more presentable. Then we can continue with the rest of the assembly, because we do have a few more parts to make. It's strange, isn't it? Those little cracks have caused all of that problem. If we hadn't have gone right in there and done all of these repairs, that engine and gearbox could have been on the floor. NARRATOR Tim and Fuzz are Celebrating the 50th birthday of the VW Polo by renovating this G40. It's owned by 43 year old electrician Anthony, who's always dreamed of restoring it to its former glory. However, a catastrophic accident at work and subsequent cancer diagnosis have prevented him from making that dream a reality. TIM What have you been told by the doctors? LINDA He's got stage four, which is. TIM As far as it gets. LINDA Yeah, as far as it gets. NARRATOR Determined to make Anthony's dream come true, the team has been working tirelessly to turn his car around. FUZZ Right. So that is our engine and gearbox mounting, completely reconstructed. And hopefully it's going to be beefy enough to do the job. But as you can see, there's a long way to go. NARRATOR You can say that again. The body needs to be repainted and an entirely new suspension set up must be fitted. So while the team press on, armed with their newfound knowledge of the G40 importance in the Polo story, Tim and Fuzz are getting behind the wheel of one to put the theory into practice. FUZZ I was in Polos in the late 80s early 90s, but I can't understand how this one feels so different. It's like I'm sitting in the same place, but the feel is altogether much more modern because it s shifting along at a proper old pace. TIM Yeah, it is. What this car has done for me instantly within 20 seconds of being in it, it's made me realise that all non-supercharged versions, excluding the GTIs, feel underpowered. FUZZ I think it's a proper sleeper. The whole thing looks understated, but it goes like the clappers. TIM The delivery of the power is so linear. Dare I compare it to an electric vehicle? So an electric vehicle delivers that power in an absolutely straight line. FUZZ Straight up. Yeah. TIM And this thing does exactly the same. So this is like jumping into the future. It really is like-- FUZZ Jumping into the future past. TIM Well yes it is. TIM I love this car. It's just I'm just, I'm angry at myself for overlooking it and having that stigma. Oh, it's a Polo. The Golf's the one you want. No, no, no, no, it's not. The next time I see one of these on the road, I'll go. You're a petrolhead. You're a driver. You know your cars. The thing that I love about a supercharged engine, Fuzz, versus a turbo. People would say, well, the turbo is powered from the exhaust, so it's not wasting power, whereas the supercharger steals it from the drive of the engine and it's parasitic. So it steals power to give you a bit of power back. FUZZ Yeah. The great thing about the supercharger is it actually gives you the power. As soon as you put your foot down, you've got it there. It's delivering. Whereas a turbocharger, it needs the exhaust gases to spin it up. Which means that, yeah, you get that characteristic turbo lag. This releases so much more power from what is otherwise a little bit of a plodding four cylinder, you know, petrol engine. It does a phenomenal job. TIM I love it, I absolutely love it. This has been my first go in a Polo G40 and actually, dare I say it, it's been more fun. And you know, top of the pile of my cars is a Mk2 Golf GTI. FUZZ Yeah. TIM I would say this is, it's a better car to drive. NARRATOR Well, on that bombshell, there's even more reason to return Anthony's to the road, which means sorting his tired old supercharger. A job that's not straightforward, because if expert Brian can't recondition it, the boys are in serious trouble. FUZZ Now we've got our G-Lader supercharger here. NARRATOR Because with less than 50 G40s on the road, finding a replacement will be near impossible. FUZZ Can we get into this and start pulling it apart? BRIAN Not a problem. Yeah. FUZZ Okay. Where do we start? BRIAN Start by, well, we pre-loosen these, so we need to take the pulleys off. FUZZ So pulley off. BRIAN Take this end off. FUZZ Okay. I've got to tell you that this car was bought in around 2007, nearly 20 years ago. And it has not been driven since. So is there anything that we need to watch out for in here? BRIAN Normally the oil seals would be rock hard. FUZZ Oh, okay. BRIAN Because of the age. FUZZ Yeah. NARRATOR Luckily, the seals can be replaced. But if any of the internal metal scroll is damaged, then it could be the end of the road for this supercharger. FUZZ That feels like it's let go. BRIAN I'll hold this. Just pull it straight off. That's it. FUZZ Okay. Right. Okay. Now, this is very interesting. So what we have is like a scroll in there. Now that is the G of the G line. BRIAN Yeah, that's the G. FUZZ So air comes in or is drawn in. And then the pulley turns. And so that squeezes that kind of scroll around in an oscillating fashion. And that moves in here. So it kind of, as it does, it squeezes the air around. BRIAN And out. FUZZ And out through that pipe which comes out through there, which then goes out through there. That is phenomenal. NARRATOR And to demonstrate just how much of a difference that injection of compressed air has on the car's performance, Tim has arranged a little science lesson. TIM Right. Kaz is just filling a bag with oxygen. Right. Pair of matches. And we all know how quickly matches burn. They're burning at the same rate. This one's just burning in the air, chilling. The bottom match, well, if we give it a bit more oxygen, because Kaz has got a bag of oxygen. Look at the difference. The oxygen is,wow. Look at that. The speed at which, I mean, that's done. They're both out. Right. So oxygen increases the speed at which you can burn the fuel, meaning you can burn more fuel and get more power. And that is what a supercharger does. NARRATOR But more importantly, what's the outcome for Anthony's supercharger? Can it be saved or is it scrap? FUZZ So far, how's this supercharger looking? BRIAN Looks really good. FUZZ Yeah? BRIAN Yeah, that is a real clean unit. FUZZ Yeah. So you reckon this one's good to go again? BRIAN Definitely. NARRATOR Once again, spending the last 17 years sat in the garage may have saved Anthony's Polo from catastrophic failure. So to recondition it ready for the road starts with a trip through the parts washer. FUZZ I'm going in. NARRATOR Followed by a quick bake in the oven to expand the metal, which allows the new bearings to drop into place. FUZZ Right. Well, that looks delicious. With chips. BRIAN With chips. FUZZ There we go. FUZZ Now we've got the bearings in the casings. what's next? BRIAN Scroll. FUZZ Next bearing, here we go. Out comes the diffuser. The oven's off and we're going to be having our tea very soon. BRIAN Yeah. NARRATOR Yes. Fuzz and Brian are garnishing the original supercharger with a juicy set of new bearings. A succulent fresh drive pulley. FUZZ There we are, on with our pulley. NARRATOR And finally seasoning with some new oil seals. FUZZ There we go. Seals in. Right, finally. NARRATOR A recipe that ensures it's good for the next 100,000 miles. FUZZ That should just-- BRIAN Just give it, give it a turn. FUZZ Yeah, that'll squeeze together. And there is our supercharger. All but finished. That's great news. Our little Polo supercharger lives to see another day. It's a clever piece of kit. Much cleverer than it looks from the outside. END OF PART 3 PART 4 NARRATOR Something else that's looking clever from the outside is the Polo shell. It's had a coat of original brilliant Schwarz metallic paint. And with the supercharger back from its rebuild, it's time to see if those reinforced mounts are up to the job. MECHANIC All right, come down a little bit more then, Bretlin. Keep coming, keep coming, keep coming, keep coming, keep coming. Looking good. Yeah, we're looking perfectly right. FUZZ A bit more? MECHANIC Yeah. Coming. Coming, coming. Hold there. FUZZ Okay. Held. All right, just one bolt in. It's always very satisfying when the engine goes in. It's a big part of a car, and it's nice to see it sitting in its place. It kind of gives an air of progress. So long as they don't look that direction. NARRATOR Yes. There's still a long way to go. Body panels are missing, as are wheels and an interior. And with just 24 hours left, Fuzz still needs to tackle the suspension problem. FUZZ Here we have our offside front suspension strut. Now, one thing that I want to try and do with this car is to avoid a problem that it had when we inherited it, because it had been lowered so much that this track rod end was bashing into the wheel arch, puncturing it. And it makes life very interesting. If you're breaking. the car goes down at the front, the steering locks up into the wheel arch and you can't turn the steering wheel. You don't want that. What we have here is what I would basically describe as a MacPherson strut. Now, MacPherson struts first came into being in around about the late 50s, early 1960s, largely on Ford cars. And what they did was they revolutionised the build of front suspension in that rather than having cumbersome wishbones and springs all separately mounted, the Macpherson strut incorporated everything into one. So a coil spring and then inside here a shock absorber. And then in this case, we've got the front hub and in goes the drive shaft at the back end of that which is tightened up on the front here. So it's neat, it's very cost effective and it's lightweight as well. And that's what you want on a car. FUZZ With a little bit of a jiggle, that's us in place. I will loosely fit the pinch bolt through here as through like so. Then it's on with the track rod end, in like so. It may look like the car is complete, but it's only partially there. I would say 85% and we're running out of time. NARRATOR Yes, fuzz still needs to fit the remaining three suspension setups and install four new sets of brakes as well as a mountain of other jobs. FUZZ Put the bonnet on. Check the vehicle electrics. Check that the engine starts. Yeah, there's a long way to go. NARRATOR So it's time to call in the reinforcements to bring this Polo back to life. Tim's refitting the original interior. TIM I've hit that age where you use your arm to lift your leg up, 'cause it hasn't got the power in it. NARRATOR And adding a period correct set of G40 specific wheels. TIM It's nice to see the right wheels going on the right car. And for the real aficionados out there, you will recognise the fact that it is a 13 inch wheel and not a 14. NARRATOR Which leaves Fuzz and the rest of the team to wire in the electronics and lights. Fit the bumpers. And finally add the cherry on top. TIM So for those of you like me who are really geeky, you might recognise the back of the badge here, because you've got the recess there that goes into the fin on the grill and the two clips and the noise you'll recognise. Listen to this. Because we all changed the badges on our cars all the time. Make them look like something they weren't. TIM This is it, Fuzz. FUZZ Yep. The supercharger moment. TIM It's supercharger time. The first time we get to hear this car, Anthony's car running with a supercharger on it. Go on, start it. FUZZ Yeah, yeah, okay. Right. I'm gonna go. TIM Go on. Go on, give it some. I love that, I mean, that is just so sweet. Listen. Yeah, I love that. For a little 1.3l engine, that is just angry, isn't it? Tomorrow. FUZZ Yeah, come on. What's happening? TIM Anthony's big day. FUZZ Yeah. What is it? TIM I've pulled something out of the bag. FUZZ Go on. TIM It's big. We're talking A-list celebrity big. FUZZ Really? FUZZ Yep. I'll give you [MUTED]. F1. FUZZ That's one letter and one number. TIM Anyway, forget that for a moment. FUZZ Yeah. TIM You like curries, don't you? FUZZ Yeah, I love them. TIM Get the car sorted. FUZZ Yeah. TIM I'll text you the address. FUZZ Fantastic. TIM Right. FUZZ Excellent. TIM Poppadoms. FUZZ Yeah. TIM Dips. FUZZ Yep. ANTHONY Right. Bonnet on. END OF PART 4 PART 5 NARRATOR After an astonishing 700 hours of hard work, the boys are finally back in Tamworth, ready to surprise Anthony with his newly restored Polo G40. TIM Oh. That is a picture, Fuzzbot. It's stunning. FUZZ I know, it could not look better than it does right now in this sunshine on a clear, beautiful day. It just absolutely pops. [LAUGHS]. FUZZ It does. FUZZ Ah, now you mentioned an F1 driver and something about Curries. Where are they? TIM Right. The whole method of giving Antony's car back is too complicated to explain out here. Follow me, It'll all make sense. Come on. I won't let you down. NARRATOR You've said that before. FUZZ Oh, I get it now. The electrical retailer, not the food. TIM Exactly, the place we all love to come as a kid and just peruse, look over all the screens. Guess what's happening today? Anthony's mum and dad have just said. Son, will you come down to choose a TV? Yeah, can do, I'll come down and help out. But when he gets down here, his eyes are going to be drawn to these screens that say the name of his favourite F1 racing driver on 'em. [WHISTLES] FUZZ No, you haven't got Lando Norris? TIM Yes. FUZZ No you haven't. TIM Yes. The Lando Norris who's going to start speaking to him and say Anthony, go outside. We've got a treat for you. NARRATOR Yes. Anthony's come shopping with his mum and dad who've said they're after a new telly and need his advice to help them choose the right one. So with Tim tucked out of sight in the storeroom. TIM Right, Anthony is here, he is in the shop. He's working his way towards the TV. NARRATOR And Fuzz around the back of the shop, hidden away with the car. FUZZ It's just a waiting game now. So any minute. Anthony and his mum and dad should hopefully come out of that door, closely pursued by Tim. NARRATOR The fun can begin. LUCAS Do you guys have a particular size you're sort of looking for? NARRATOR Also in on today's surprise is sales assistant, Lucas. LUCAS These ones down here, for example, this is a QLED. So you've got QLEDs. NARRATOR Who's got the job of playing Lando's message at exactly the right moment to make sure that Anthony sees it. LUCAS Yeah. So I'll just play this. TIM Experience all the thrills and spills of this year's Formula One season in 75in of QLED ultra high definition, transforming light into lifelike-- LUCAS The sound is coming from this one here, so you probably want to focus on that one. TIM In the truly immersive sound as we catch up with Lando Norris. LUCAS I said, this is my favourite bit. It's my favourite bit. TIM Abu Dhabi. LANDO NORRIS Abu Dhabi was incredible. Um, during the season, like we did to end with a pole race win. The Constructors Championship was unbelievable. So something I'll remember for a long time. ANTHONY Yeah, for his age. How old is he? LANDO NORRIS Is that, Anthony? LINDA [LAUGHS] LANDO NORRIS Anthony Parker, right? From Tamworth. ANTHONY What the hell? LINDA What the heck? LANDO NORRIS It's you right? Uh, weird timing. Actually, I've got a little surprise for you. So I got a friend waiting, and they've got a little surprise. ANTHONY What's this all about? LANDO NORRIS Go check it out. TONY Oh. ANTHONY What's going on here, then? LUCAS So if you guys just want to follow me. ANTHONY Yeah. Okay. [INAUDIBLE] yeah. What the? Is that my car? TIM Hello, mate. ANTHONY Whoa! TIM How are you doing? Nice to meet you. ANTHONY I recognise that face. TIM Do you recognise that car? ANTHONY Yeah. I've just clocked the reg. Oh, bloody hell. TIM Whose is it? Whose is that? ANTHONY It's mine. TIM Anthony, your mum and dad wrote to us and said that you're having a very tough time at the moment. And there was one thing that was really important to you, and that is getting your car on the road and getting back in it. ANTHONY Yeah, yeah. TIM And there are also a few people here that you might recognise. Can you bring out Anthony s family please? ANTHONY I'm absolutely shocked. GROUP [CHEERS] ANTHONY Ah [LAUGHS] UNKNOWN SPEAKER Yes, Tony. TIM You don't know what's going on, do you? ANTHONY No. TIM Too much isn't it? ANTHONY It is. I'm shocked. I'm absolutely gobsmacked. Yeah. TIM Come over. Come on, mum and dad. Your mum and dad wrote to us. Can you explain to your boy why you wrote to us? LINDA We just love you so much. And we're so proud of the way you handled all these horrible, horrible treatments that you've had to go through, chemo and various. Oh, it is endless, hospital trips. ANTHONY Oh, aww, TIM Give him a hug. Come on, come on, dad. Come on, Tony. ANTHONY Yeah, yeah. TIM So how does it feel? ANTHONY I don't know what to say. TIM It's still not sunk in yet. That's what he's thinking. Could we have a round of applause for a man who clearly had no idea. Anthony and his G40. NARRATOR When Anthony last saw his beloved G40, it was a non-running wreck that had spent the last 17 years rotting away in his garage. But now this Polo is back to mint condition. Under the bonnet, the worn front gearbox mounts are now stronger than ever. The all important supercharger has been reconditioned and stands ready to bring the power. On the inside, the original 90s interior looks as good as the day it left the factory. Finally, it's had an original coat of brilliant Schwarz metallic paint. There's a new suspension setup on all four corners, complete with BBS wheels, and the all important red badges have been restored to their pride of place. TIM What is it about a Polo G40? Why this car? ANTHONY Because it's supercharged. [LAUGHS] TIM Simple as that. ANTHONY Simple as that. TIM Yeah. How many miles have you done in this car? ANTHONY About two in total. TIM [LAUGHS] Two? ANTHONY Two miles I've only ever driven this. TIM So, owning a very rare Polo saving G40 and only driving it two miles. ANTHONY [LAUGHS] Yeah. TIM That must have killed you. That must have been a pain. ANTHONY Within 20 years, yeah, so. TIM Were you gutted? ANTHONY I just wanted to get it back to original and back on the road. TIM So to be sitting in it now, what does that mean to you? ANTHONY That's what I mean. It's amazing. Absolutely amazing. TIM Did you ever think it would get done? ANTHONY No, I didn't, to be honest. I thought it would just end up being sold off, dragged out of the garage with a winch and [LAUGHS]. TIM Really? ANTHONY And sold off for parts, yeah. TIM And how did that feel? The idea of that? ANTHONY Oh, yeah. I didn't want that to happen at all. TIM Anthony you re an amazing person. What have you learned on your journey from the day you were diagnosed? ANTHONY What have I learned? Just carry on. TIM Really? ANTHONY Yeah. Carry on. They tell you, oh, no, you can't do that. Or just sit there and the more you just sit there and do nothing, the worse you'll get. TIM Anthony, do you know what I love about you? You don't want any sympathy, do you? ANTHONY No, no. TIM You don't want any sympathy. ANTHONY I'm one of them people that, I don't want fuss or anything like that. It's everyone else that have been worrying about me, the wife and my parents. And I'm just trying to keep saying, look, don't fuss, don't fuss. It will be all right in the end. TIM Anthony, it gives me great pleasure to present you with your keys and your key ring and tell you. ANTHONY I've been car S.O.S.'d TIM Yes you have. There you go, mate. You totally deserve it. ANTHONY Thank you very much. TIM Well done. Enjoy your car. ANTHONY Yeah. ANTHONY Yay. TONY Well, was this a big surprise? ANTHONY You're not joking. I can't believe it's all back together. TONY And it's on the road. ANTHONY And it looks showroom condition. TONY Yeah, it's great, isn't it? What's it like to be behind your wheel after all these years of being in the garage? ANTHONY Unbelievable. [LAUGHS] I've only really drove it two mile in all them years. TONY Yeah. Yeah. ANTHONY It's come back. Just wonderful to drive. Yeah. ###
