ALISON ANDY BEV BYRON CAR_DEALER DANIEL FUZZ_TOWNSHEND JACKIE MICHAEL MIKE_BREWER NARRATOR NICKY_GRIST PAUL_LUDLOW PRODUCTION_CREW_MEMBER SPEAKER_19 TIM_SHAW NARRATOR Today on Car SOS. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Hold onto your heads NARRATOR Tim and Fuzz tackle an ultra-rare rally car for the road. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right at the front is this whopping great turbocharger. NARRATOR That's on the cusp of a visit to the scrapheap in the sky. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Moss is a great friend of rust. Rust and moss are like that. NARRATOR So can the boys turn this Japanese classic from a wet sushi roll. TIM SHAW The engine's knackered, the steering's, the breaks are knackered. NARRATOR Into a bowl of flaming hot wasabi? FUZZ TOWNSHEND That a lovely looking bottom isn't it? TIM SHAW Thanks Fuzz. NARRATOR And make its owner's dream come true. TIM SHAW Any idea what's going on here, Tony? MICHAEL Well, I do now, yes. NARRATOR Today, the boys are venturing north, to the birthplace of a certain someone. TIM SHAW Sheffield is known for two things. Stainless steel and the legend that is, yours truly. TIM SHAW Right. Now Fuzz, don't take this the wrong way but to fit in around here, there's a special lingo. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Are you sure? TIM SHAW Just repeat after me. Nah then, duck. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Nah then, duck. TIM SHAW I'm Fuzz. FUZZ TOWNSHEND I'm Fuzz. TIM SHAW It's right nesh up here. FUZZ TOWNSHEND It's right nesh. TIM SHAW Perfect. But the main reason we are here is because today we are picking up the legendary Toyota Celica GT4 Carlos signed edition. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Oh yes. That's very, very special. TIM SHAW Very special. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yep. NARRATOR This all wheel drive turbocharged 205 bhp Japanese rocket is the road-going homologation version of the Celica that propelled Spanish supremo Carlos Sainz Sr. to championship glory in 1992. Packed with specialist rally engineering tweaks that you won't find on a run of the mill GT4, Toyota only produced 5,000 of this very special edition, which makes it a rarity, reserved for only the most dedicated of petrol heads. TIM SHAW Right, this car is owned by a guy called Michael who absolutely loves this car, okay. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right, okay. TIM SHAW We're gonna meet Alison and Jackie, right, Michael's sister and wife. We'll find out more about Michael's story, but this car is one that I haven't seen for a long, long time. FUZZ TOWNSHEND You're excited, aren't you, churchy face. TIM SHAW I'm very excited. Yeah, I am because this is a real treat, this is finding a real gem in the world of cars. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Just remember, though, it's over 30 years old and it might be looking just a little bit tired. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right, hold on, what's nesh mean again? TIM SHAW Nesh means it's cold. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Nesh. It's right nesh. TIM SHAW Yeah, exactly. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right okay, right, okay. Look, there it is. There it is. Come on. TIM SHAW I mean that, that is the one. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Look, I've gotta do this now, otherwise I'm gonna forget. TIM SHAW Have you got it in your head? FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah, I got it in my head. TIM SHAW Oh, here we go. Jackie, Alison, hello. How you doing, alright? Lovely to meet you. Listen, before you go any further, come out, come out. Fuzz has got something he'd like to say to you, just to make himself fit in. Go on Fuzz, go on. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah, nah den duck. ALISON Hello. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Nah den duck. Alright, I'm Fuzz. It's right nesh ALISON Yeah, it's very nesh . FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah. TIM SHAW Sheffield lad, non-Sheffield lad, trying to fit in Sheffield lad. Where is Michael? ALISON He's out for the day with his son. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Okay. TIM SHAW So we're in the clear. So let's get this man on it. Let's go and have a chat about Michael shall we? FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right, come on. Let's have a look, see what we've got here. FUZZ TOWNSHEND The paintwork, a little bit jaded here. And non-standard wheels. Okay, couple of little dents here on the side of the door. But then, this little bit of trim, pushing out, I can see some moss at the top. Now moss is a great friend of rust. Rust and moss are like that. They absolutely love each other. There are the tell-tale signs of lots and lots of water collecting at the bottom here. The bumper at the rear looks like it's perhaps had some sort of respray at some time, but definitely it's just cracking away. FUZZ TOWNSHEND There's one thing that I know about this car, and that that it's a runner. But at nearly 100,000 miles, it's starting to be at that sort of mid-life point when a person goes to a doctor, and the doctor goes, "Yeah, yeah, we'll just have a look. Ooh, bit wrong there. That's bit high, that's a bit low." All of those kind of things, that's where this car is at. TIM SHAW Has Michael always been a car guy? JACKIE Yeah, yeah, I think he has. TIM SHAW Do you know what you've got out there? ALISON I know it's a special car and I know it's his pride and joy TIM SHAW Is it? How does he treat it? ALISON He actually treats it like it's made out of gold to me. And he does, he loves to polish it when he can. TIM SHAW When he got it, what do you remember of when he got it? ALISON I think he spent about a good two or three weeks constantly, each day going out to that car. TIM SHAW Coming in like an excited boy? ALISON Oh absolutely. It was like, he kept saying, "I can't believe I've got a Carlos Sainz." He just wants to make that car a hundred percent. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Now, here we have an engine bay jam packed with goodies. At least it was jam packed with goodies in the early 1990s. Right at the front is this whopping great turbocharger. That is part of this car's magic. So that is a great thing, but turbochargers wear. Everything is starting to feel its age. I'm gonna try starting it. Let's see what happens. FUZZ TOWNSHEND It's alive! That's great. And that's a rare thing for Car SOS. But how well does it drive? How does it behave once it gets warm? And looking at it, it looks pretty tired in there. I think we're still going to have to do a lot of work to it, but at least it's nice that we won't have to push it into the workshop. TIM SHAW What's happened in Michael's life to mean that a very rare car sitting out there is left in that condition? ALISON In his early 50s, they identified that he got two leakin' valves. TIM SHAW Two leaking valves in the heart. ALISON Yeah. They replaced the mitral valve with a metal valve and that was in place about five years, until last year, he got an infection. ALISON And it was just ruining his body for about a few months. And then it started then attacking his metal valve TIM SHAW I can't even begin to imagine what you guys must be going through. ALISON It's been, honestly, it's been awful and then he said, "Before I die, can I marry you." Then he says, "Can we have something special for us honeymoon, 'cause you deserve it Alison." So he booked a cruise, that's when I found out that they wouldn't insure Michael. I'd already paid for the cruise in full. TIM SHAW I know where this is going. ALISON I lost a lot of money. TIM SHAW What is the future for Michael at the moment, in terms of treatment? ALISON Next week, he goes for the keyhole and they will try and plug the leaks in his heart. If it's not successful, then they will have to then consider the full open heart surgery. TIM SHAW Alison, it's imperative we get this car done as soon as possible isn't it? ALISON It is. Every day, to me, is a day close to Michael not being here. TIM SHAW Right, Fuzzbot. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah. TIM SHAW Michael is very unwell. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Understood. TIM SHAW We've gotta turn this car around to the best of our abilities, and quickly. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Oh sorry. TIM SHAW Horn works! NARRATOR With the clock already ticking, there's not a moment to waste. TIM SHAW That'll do. Oh you're stuck, can you not get out? FUZZ TOWNSHEND No. NARRATOR The boys need to quickly smuggle the Celica into the covered trailer. TIM SHAW What about climbing out the boot? FUZZ TOWNSHEND No, hold on a minute I'm there. NARRATOR And out of sight of any nosy neighbours, so it can be sent on ahead to the workshop. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Oh! TIM SHAW Oh . TIM SHAW Right come on. Let's get out of here, we've got work to be doing. NARRATOR Leaving them to contemplate the challenges of renovating a super-rare three decade old road-going rally car. What makes this car so special is that it is a homologation car. Meaning that in order to compete in world rally championship, Toyota had to mass produce these cars on the scale of 5000. Now that may seem like a lot, but no, it's not a lot at all. Meaning that, if there are any bits that don't' work or that are missing, we are in grave, deepest, darkest, dog twaddle. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah. Now I see what you're getting at. NARRATOR On the plus side, at least it runs. How bad can it be? TIM SHAW Fuzzbot? FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah? TIM SHAW This car presents us with what I might consider a very, very unique opportunity. FUZZ TOWNSHEND What do you mean? TIM SHAW This car is taxed, tested and MOT'd. I know it's got major problems, but hear me out first. If either of us have ever driven one of these cars, and legally we can drive it for the first time since the beginning of the old car sausage, get it out on the road. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Are you listening? No. No, no. No. TIM SHAW I've said my bit, I'm going. It's up to you. You wanna get in it and join me in it. Fine. I'm leaving. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right. You wait there. I'm gonna keep an eye on you. NARRATOR So in a Car SOS first, the boys have the opportunity to take Michael's pride and joy for a spin, to work out what's really wrong with this tired old Toyota. FUZZ TOWNSHEND There's testing and there's just driving. So what I want you to do is test it, okay TIM SHAW Right, okay. So first things first, I can tell you already, that there's a problem with the gearbox. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Are you sure? TIM SHAW Yeah. NARRATOR And what it's gonna take to give it a new lease of life. TIM SHAW There's play in the steering wheel, the temperature gauge is already hot. You know what this car is? FUZZ TOWNSHEND What? TIM SHAW It's just like you. FUZZ TOWNSHEND What do you mean? TIM SHAW Well, from the outside it looks alright, but on the inside it's knackered. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Oh great, yeah, yeah. That's really nice. NARRATOR It might just about run, but beneath it's passable exterior it turns out this Celica is in much worse shape than anyone could have imagined. TIM SHAW It's gonna stall. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right, okay. So we've got a problem that we have actually. TIM SHAW We've got major problems. The engine's knackered, the steering's knackered, the brakes are knackered, the gearbox, God only knows what's wrong in that gears one and two, and it's overheating. Gutted. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Come on, that's it. Come on, bring it round. NARRATOR After test driving Michael's limited edition 1992 Carlos Sainz Celica GT4. FUZZ TOWNSHEND That's it, in tighter than that, tighter. TIM SHAW It's overheating again. The gearbox is refusing to go into gear. NARRATOR The boys have discovered there's a lot more wrong with it than meets the eye. TIM SHAW I'm beginning to get that fear, that dread wash over me, Fuzz, as I look at this car. NARRATOR So it's time to get it up onto the ramp and really see what's going on. TIM SHAW '90s nightmares. TIM SHAW Oh my word, Fuzz. Look at the car up there and look at it down here. It's rotten. Look at the state of that lot. FUZZ TOWNSHEND We have got what appears to be leakage going under here. TIM SHAW I mean, look at it, it's still wet oil. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah. It's a little more than a wire brush job, isn't it. So this is all gonna come down. So though the car doesn't' look bad on the top, it's a 20-footer this car, stand 20 ft away from it, squint your eyes a bit and it looks okay. But from where we are now, this is terrible. TIM SHAW Look at the struts up there. Look at the suspension up there. It's absolutely shot. TIM SHAW Right. Let's say that we need to replace that suspension arm there. What do we do? FUZZ TOWNSHEND Order another one. TIM SHAW Okay. TIM SHAW So my go-to place for parts, bearing in mind this is the Carlos Sainz edition. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah, how different can it possibly be? TIM SHAW Right, there you go. Have a look through Europe, please. On sale, currently in Europe. Carlos Sainz Celica parts. How any have you got? FUZZ TOWNSHEND I can't find anything at the moment. FUZZ TOWNSHEND We've got trouble. We have trouble, because look. Look at the state of it. This car needs some serious componentry. If we can't get hold of any, then how are we going to do this car? NARRATOR It turns out getting Michael's rare Japanese classic back to him quickly is gonna be a battle. For starters, there's the task of working out which part is leaking oil faster than a North Sea well. Then, there's the gearbox, which has gone from rally-inspired, so so uninspired that it won't even go into gear. Finally Tim faces the prospect of tracking down four rarer than rare suspension legs. On top of that, the car will need a full undercarriage overhaul and body respray. FUZZ TOWNSHEND So I think our best plan of action is to drop the engine, the gearbox, the transfer box and the front suspension, separate it all out, get it all cleaned up, and then, start working on things individually on the bench. It's be much easier like that. NARRATOR It's crucial that the boys return Michael's car to him as soon as possible. So while Fuzz and the team are in a race against the clock to strip it down and find the source of the mysterious oil leak, NARRATOR Tim, is busy finding out what a Toyota based on a rally car should really feel like. TIM SHAW oh my, what? Dear God! This is a rocket. NICKY GRIST That's fourth gear, fifth gear. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Oh my word. NARRATOR By taking a drive in the passenger seat of the competition version of Michael's car. TIM SHAW Oh my word! I'm trying to think of other experiences in my life. This is just pure engineering isn't it? It's metal on metal. NARRATOR That's being put through its paces by one of he world's greatest co-drivers, and former World Rally Champion, Nicky Grist. TIM SHAW All of the stuff that's available to regular folk to go and buy from a dealership, is just a nod to this, isn't it? NICKY GRIST Exactly. TIM SHAW It really is. This is as different as a motorcycle is to a car. TIM SHAW God, if I was with anybody else in the car, I'd be terrified. But this is just amazing. What an experience. NARRATOR But Tim's not just here for fun. He needs to understand what being a rare homologation Celica means for how they approach restoring Michael's pride and joy. TIM SHAW My reason for coming here is to understand or get a sort of handle on what homologation is. NICKY GRIST Got a document here just for you, Tim. So all the wheel arches, exactly at the front end, the back end of the car, aesthetically that has to be like a road car. TIM SHAW Right. It's all down to this. And ultimately it should say on page one, actually as it does, there's the picture of Michael's car, and that's your starting point. NICKY GRIST That's it. Correct. Basically, once you've got the basic body shape, Toyota Team Europe, then within guidelines, were allowed to modify, to a point, the engine, the layout of the engine bay, all the suspension parts totally beefed up. TIM SHAW Right. NICKY GRIST The rear diff set-up is much bigger. TIM SHAW I mean, this thing here, I mean this is pretty specific, isn't it? NICKY GRIST It's very detailed, even down to the gear ratios we have to use. TIM SHAW So the world's best engineers have worked on this car and actually have also worked on Michael's car, 'cause that thing needed to be designed around this to some extent, didn't it? NICKY GRIST Yes, to a point. NICKY GRIST So let me get this straight. The only reason that Michael's car, his GT4 Carlos Sainz, exists, one of 5,000 is just so this can be made. NICKY GRIST Yes and perform in the World Rally Championship NICKY GRIST So the value in Michael's car is keeping it as standard as it came out of the Toyota factory. So you've got 124 in the UK, I think. TIM SHAW Is that it? NICKY GRIST That's about it. And so, if we look at it in the world, probably a thousand left. TIM SHAW Which is nothing. NICKY GRIST Nothing really on the scale of it. TIM SHAW So any bits that it left the factory with, that we still own, have to be refurbished and put back on. NICKY GRIST Yeah, absolutely. NARRATOR But, as refurbishing parts is a much slower process than buying new ones, it's gonna cost the boys time they don't have. And with Fuzz no closer to understanding what part of Michael's car is spewing oil, it's a setback they could do without. FUZZ TOWNSHEND So here we have our gearbox and our transfer box. Now, what is obviously evident here is that we have some oil egress. Oil's getting out from somewhere and it's plastered all over here. Now, what I think is the case, is that we don't have a gearbox oil leak here, 'cause this is where I'd expect to see a nasty gearbox oil leak, coming out from the seal that prevents oil coming out along this shaft. There's nothing there. We also don't have any leaks around these output seals here. But what we do have is evidence of oil dripping down here. What I think is that this is an engine oil leak. Now, there's a way that we can test this. I always like to carry a little bit of this stuff in my back pocket. A little bit of loo roll. Now this can help us diagnose where our leaks are coming from. We can just dab it down here and see what colour oil we've got. NARRATOR As most gearbox oil is dyed red by the manufacturer and engine oil is black, working out where the leak is coming from should be the straightforward part of the repair. FUZZ TOWNSHEND There we are. We've got a little bit of black sooty oil. So that means that, almost certainly, this is an engine oil leak and we don't have a gearbox or transfer box oil leak. So we need to turn our focus on that thing there. NARRATOR Which means, a lot of dirty, painstaking work to find out what's gone wrong. NARRATOR At the Car SOS nerve centre, Fuzz is getting oiled up. FUZZ TOWNSHEND It's wet down here, and all the way up here. NARRATOR But there's no saucy photo shoot planned today. He's busy tracking down the leak on Michael's Celica. FUZZ TOWNSHEND So now we come to top end oil leak, which appears to be coming from where the distributor goes into the cylinder head. Now hopefully, it's just a little O-ring under there, that has got a little bit hard, dried out, maybe flat, worn, something like that. NARRATOR There might only be a small leak, but it can cause big problems, attracting dirt into the engine. And if it were to get hot enough, potentially causing a fire. So Fuzz needs to get it stopped FUZZ TOWNSHEND So we've just got a couple of bolts in here. What I'm gonna do is tighten it just slightly. FUZZ TOWNSHEND There we are. Then loosen it off. It's a great method of undoing tight bolts. Just tighten them slightly and then release them. There's our O-ring, right there. And here is the point at which the leak is actually emanating. So all we need to do is replace that ring and then everything is okay again. NARRATOR So it looks like a quick and easy engine oil leak fix for Fuzz. But for Tim, it's gonna be anything but. TIM SHAW Byron, hello mate, how you doing? BYRON Alright Tim. Good. You? TIM SHAW I have got a tough one for you here. I've got a full set of coilovers from a Carlos Sainz GT4 Celica. It's unique to that car. It cannot be replaced with new. Is it possible? It looks like it's on the edge. BYRON So, yeah, I mean it does look pretty weathered. TIM SHAW Be honest with me. Put a number on it. Are we 50/50 it'll go again, or not? Or what? BYRON 60/40? TIM SHAW What, in favour of it happening? BYRON Not in your favour. NARRATOR With so few of these Celicas still on the road, finding four new suspension legs is gonna be almost impossible. So if they're too far gone to be refurbished, TIM SHAW That's not gonna twang off and hit me in the gonads, is it? BYRON Well, we'll find out . TIM SHAW . NARRATOR We might not only be saying sayonara to Tim's crown jewels, but, more importantly, this entire project. BYRON This is the most important part, Tim. TIM SHAW Okay. BYRON The moment of truth. TIM SHAW I don't wanna, like, put it on you too much, but we need this so much. Honestly. TIM SHAW What are we lookin' at here then? BYRON So this is, like, the internal of the shock. And it's still where we want it, so that's a good start. So if I remove this O-ring, we'll be able to see what we're working with. TIM SHAW Right. So I mean, this to me, with my limited knowledge of suspension, looks like it's in nice condition? BYRON Yeah, do you know what? That's actually quite good to be fair. Yeah, it's much better than I thought it would be. TIM SHAW This is great news, isn't it? I mean actually it's not so bad, right, we've dodged a bullet here. NARRATOR As the internals of the leg are in good shape, the suspension is going to live to drive another day. So it's onto the shot blaster for the outer casing, to remove 30 years of rust and road grime, before it's given a coat of protective zinc. TIM SHAW Right, it's time to get your party pants on, it's show time. BYRON You should see it changing colour into more silver. TIM SHAW Oh yeah. And at is a complete transformation. NARRATOR And finally, a coat of factory fresh black paint. TIM SHAW Oh my word, look at that. The fact that it's gonna go again and the fact that it is original Carlos Sainz only GT4 Celica gear, that you cannot get anywhere, mate, let's get this, what ever we need to do to it done, and get it over there and get it rebuilt. NARRATOR So that's one vital part done, but there's still a mountain to climb. The Celica's body shell still needs to go off to have the rust, and old tired paint, removed. And to further pile on the pressure, ALISON Hello Tim, I appreciate it. Yeah thank you. TIM SHAW Alright, nice to see you, come here. You alright? NARRATOR Alison has stopped by to update Tim and Fuzz on the outcome of Michael's surgery. ALISON We don't know whether it's actually 100% worked, but we think, fingers crossed, it has worked. We've got a long way to go. NARRATOR Having already missed out on his honeymoon through ill-health, the boys are hoping he's gonna be well enough for the big reveal. TIM SHAW That is Michael's car. Come here, come on in here. TIM SHAW What are you thinking? ALISON I think where has the engine gone, where is the seats, where has everything gone? It doesn't look like Michael's car anymore. FUZZ TOWNSHEND I know that it doesn't look as good as it did when we picked it up, because obviously it was a running, driving car. But it was right on the brink of needing everything done to it. So that's why it looks like it does. TIM SHAW I know it's a shock to see it like this, but this is part of the process. Do you wanna leave? Should we go? Do you wanna have a tea or a coffee? ALISON Yes, please. Yeah, lovely. Thank you FUZZ TOWNSHEND Just goes to show that a car can give somebody a really very strong reaction. She's really truly worried about it, because who wouldn't be worried. NARRATOR With Michael not out of the woods yet, the boys need to pile on the pressure to get his car finished as quickly as possible. FUZZ TOWNSHEND So it's off to the body shop for the shell which leaves Fuzz to get to the bottom of what's causing the gearbox stubbornness. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Now what we need to look at initially here, is our gear linkage, because Tim said it felt a bit sloppy. NARRATOR The gear linkage is a precision machine bit of kit that transfers the movement of the gear stick into the gearbox. So if components within it are worn, even by a fraction, it's gonna make selecting the right gear tougher than threading a needle with your toes. FUZZ TOWNSHEND And what I have found, initially, is a tiny little bit of play in the linkage here. Now 'I've got probably one eighth of an inch, or a few millimetres of play between the quadrant and the actual shaft. Now it may not seem like a lot, but if you think that there are lots of different linkages in this shaft, suddenly you'I've got a whole heap of sloppiness set in. So first things first, we'll have to get the quadrant off. SPEAKER 19 Michael's gearbox has covered the equivalent distance of almost 4.5 return trips from London to Sydney. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right so, there we go. NARRATOR So it's no surprise parts are starting to wear. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Now, here we are. Little steel block, worn out, maybe by or 2 millimetres at the most. But that is what has set the slop in place. NARRATOR Although small, the steel block plays a big role in helping to guide the shift selector smoothly into position when the driver wants to change gear. FUZZ TOWNSHEND So I think what we'll do, is we'll just turn this block here, 'cause all of this wear on these faces here, has occurred over the past 90 to 100,000 miles. By turning it, we get, hopefully, the same amount of wear out of it again. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Quickly tighten this up. And rather than that whole arc of play that we had before, now we've got that tiny little movement, even with the lever extended that much. Beautiful. Gonna feel like a new car. NARRATOR And there's more good news. The rust and rot have been removed from the body shell. And their place is a fresh coat of original teal metallic paint. Time for Fuzz to begin bringing everything back together, starting with Tim's ultra-rare suspension struts. NARRATOR And with Michael's car due to handed back to him in just a couple of days, it's not a moment too soon. FUZZ TOWNSHEND There we go. There's the strut in. All nicely refurbished. And, of course, we've got all the rest of the components, such as the front wishbone, to go in. And this car is really coming back together now. NARRATOR It's just one final mechanical hurdle to overcome, that involves refurbishing yet another ultra-rare part. TIM SHAW I'm presenting you with something very special here. A turbo from a Carlos Sainz edition GT4. NARRATOR The turbo is a major part of what makes Michael's car such a road-going rocket. It works by drawing exhaust gases in, compressing them, before forcing them into the engine, giving that rally-inspired performance. But after working its socks off for over 90,000 miles, it's gonna be tired. ANDY Feel this wet, nasty, carbonised black oil. Should be totally dry in here. The mount of wear doesn't justify the amount of oil leaking from this turborcharger. So that tells me you might have something else up with the engine. NARRATOR At this late stage, it's the last thing the boys near to hear. So whilst Andy presses on with refurbishing the turbo, Tim has some bad news to deliver. TIM SHAW I'm ringing Fuzz right now, because he needs to know what the issue and what we found. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right. What do you want? TIM SHAW Right, Fuzz, I've got some news for you, dude. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Good news, I hope. TIM SHAW It's the engine that's destroyed the turbo. FUZZ TOWNSHEND That means that we've gotta completely rebuild the engine. You know that that is gonna put us back in time and it's gonna cause a whole heap more work. NARRATOR So it turns out it's not just a leaky O-ring after all. We're looking at a major engine overhaul at the 11th hour. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Without further ado, what I need to do is start pulling things apart. NARRATOR Time is running out to get Michael's pressure Celica GT4 back to him. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right, we're all in position here. 4 NARRATOR Fuzz has resolved the engine issue by replacing the broken piston rings in the engine. However before the block can be sent off for a lick of paint, he needs to perform a last-minute emergency cam belt replacement. FUZZ TOWNSHEND We're at the point of no return. So I can take the belt off completely. FUZZ TOWNSHEND To ensure this '90s power plant is fit to handle another 90,000 miles on the road. Rubber cam belts only have a lifespan of around four years or 40-100,000 miles. And on a high performance engine like this the worst possible outcome is for it to break. TIM SHAW It can cause catastrophic damage within the engine, with the valves clattering into the pistons and so on and so forth. We don't want that. Now I'm just putting a bit of tension on there, as I get the wheel around. And then I've just gotta get the belt around the crankshaft. NARRATOR And with the new belts in place, the engine just needs a clean-up and fresh lick of paint. And while that's being taken care of, it's noses to the grindstone for the team. The wiring harness is threaded back into place, whilst Fuzz blasts away years of old oil leak deposits from the gearbox. Twenty-four hours later, the engine is back and all that's missing is the final piece of the puzzle. TIM SHAW Alright, Mr Fuzzbot, the turbo is back. FUZZ TOWNSHEND The tell-tale turbo that meant that the engine had to be completely rebuilt, which it has been. TIM SHAW Wow, look at it. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Well, I'm glad that you told me about that, because otherwise I might have tried to swerve it. But take a look at the car. What do you reckon? TIM SHAW It's coming together now isn't it? FUZZ TOWNSHEND But now the fun starts, because we've gotta get the turbo all in place, then somehow we've gotta get this engine up into there and everything connected up again. NARRATOR So it's a final push to the finish to get Michael's car complete, starting with mounting the turbo back on the engine. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Phew. So that's the turbo back and now I'm bolting it onto the engine. I'm really, really happy that is engine is now pretty much complete and we can start getting it back into the car, because time is moving on. NARRATOR And it's all hands on deck to help raise it into position and connect it back up. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right, you hold that up. Let's start popping it up. Okay, you in? TIM SHAW Yes. TIM SHAW We're underneath a different car here, mate. This looks like we've, it looks new. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Well, it is like a new car. In fact, I've got an idea. Come on, why don't do we lie down and have a look at the underside of the car. Just take a minute to appreciate it. Come on, here we go. There we go. TIM SHAW We're never gonna get up from here though, dude. FUZZ TOWNSHEND No, that's alright, I don't need to. TIM SHAW Look at that. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Well, do you know what? That is a lovely looking bottom, isn't it? TIM SHAW Thanks Fuzz. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Right look, it's all very well lying down here and looking at this, and it's fantastic looking at it, but how are we gonna give it back to Michael, what's the plan? TIM SHAW Michael, Sheffield. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah. TIM SHAW Michael FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah. TIM SHAW Michael and Sheffield. You absolutely beauty. FUZZ TOWNSHEND What? TIM SHAW I've got a plan. You absolute genius. Right. I'm on it. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Okay. Do you mind if I just have another minute? Ah, there we are. Looks great. NARRATOR Come on Fuzz, there's no time to lie down on the job. This beauty needs to be reunited with its rightful owner. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Look at that! It looks absolutely fantastic. But what I wanna know is what are we doing in a car dealership? It's not a brilliant idea. It's not the top one is it? TIM SHAW No, it's not the top one, unless you pulled something out of the bag which is most people's mind utterly impossible. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Tell me. TIM SHAW Who is the number one person on the planet, if they were here with us now, nobody would suspect they were gonna get Car SOS'd. Who would that be? FUZZ TOWNSHEND He'll never do it. He wouldn't do it. TIM SHAW What, contractually not allowed to? FUZZ TOWNSHEND No, he wouldn't do it. TIM SHAW It's a competition. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Yeah, he would not do it. End of. TIM SHAW Simple. Where's my cup of tea? Where is my cup? MIKE BREWER Mr Shaw, here's your tea, sir. I hope I've got it to the right temperature. TIM SHAW Thank you very much. Thank you. MIKE BREWER Hey up, Fuzz. How you doin' son? You alright? Good to see you? TIM SHAW Mike Brewer! It is the legend. MIKE BREWER Welcome to my emporium, my dealership. And Fuzz, what a car, man. You've turned out a gem there. FUZZ TOWNSHEND Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. TIM SHAW What, what, what, what, what? You don't believe me? FUZZ TOWNSHEND Hold on. MIKE BREWER Oh, no, it really is me this time. TIM SHAW Listen, listen, this is a blinder, the plan is simple, right. So Michael is coming down here today with his son Daniel. So we've lined up a Qashqai, right, that he's gonna come down and bring his dad to have a look round. He knows his cars, my dad. Mike's there, cameras are there. Mike's doing some adverts for this place. We're hidden with this car. The shutter goes up, the rest is history. MIKE BREWER It is genius. NARRATOR As a familiar face in his Sheffield showroom, Michael won't suspect anything fishy if he spots Mike. So with the hidden cameras rolling and friends and family hidden out of sight, it's time to put the plan into action. MIKE BREWER Yeah, here they come, here they come CAR DEALER Hello. How are we doing? DANIEL Oh hi, yeah, yeah CAR DEALER Hi. Can I take your name? BEV Hiya, it's Bev. CAR DEALER Fantastic. Nice to meet you and? MICHAEL Hello, I'm Mike. CAR DEALER Great stuff. Fantastic. FUZZ TOWNSHEND They're here, Michael's here. MIKE BREWER We do pride ourselves on the quality of our cars. CAR DEALER Right then, guys, so we'll go and look at the car. Excuse obviously, they are filming today with the man off the telly. MIKE BREWER We do have a fully fitted workshop and great facilities. MICHAEL I was only watching Wheeler Dealers last night. CAR DEALER Bit of a starry-eyed moment then, is it? FUZZ TOWNSHEND So he's spotted Mike. It's great. He will not suss a thing. NARRATOR Whilst Michael, unknowingly waits to inspect what he thinks could be Dan's new family runaround, Mike sets the trap to lure him into the perfect position for the big reveal. CAR DEALER Fantastic, guys, do you wanna come on through then? MIKE BREWER Mate, would you mind just to quickly grab a word with you? Maybe one of the reasons why you chose to come here and buy a car? It would really help my business if you don't mind? TIM SHAW Now, Mike needs to get Michael to be on this side of this shutter to make this happen. MIKE BREWER Could we get you like together? PRODUCTION CREW MEMBER Action. MIKE BREWER You bought your dad along. Do you like cars yourself? MICHAEL Yeah. MIKE BREWER What cars do you like? MICHAEL Well, I've got a Toyota Celica. MIKE BREWER I love an old Celica. What condition's it in? MICHAEL It needs some work doing to it. TIM SHAW They are just there. Literally that far away. They're right there. MIKE BREWER It's very kind of you to come down with your son. MICHAEL So we've got to make sure we get the right car for the little one. MIKE BREWER Yeah, you wanna make sure you get the right car. But, no doubt, in the future, no doubt, that car will gravitate to being a Toyota GT4. In fact, I think your car might be ready for you. MICHAEL Oh yeah . You're joking. TIM SHAW How you doing? You alright? MICHAEL God, I can't believe it, yeah. TIM SHAW Do you recognise this? MICHAEL I do. Yeah. TIM SHAW What is it? Whose car is it? MICHAEL It's my car, GT4, yeah. TIM SHAW Any idea what's going on here today? MICHAEL Well, I do now, yes. TIM SHAW Can we bring out Michael's family please. Come on out. Bring everyone out. Everybody out. Let's have a round of applause. MIKE BREWER Wahey! TIM SHAW Come on in, guys. Come on in. MICHAEL I'm shocked. TIM SHAW That is your car and I know it's taken a while to settle in here. Alison and Jackie wrote to us. Alison, can you explain to your lovely Michael why you wrote to us? ALISON I know that you're obviously, you've been in the hospital and you didn't know whether you were gonna make it and everything. And I thought it'd just be nice to make something for you. MICHAEL Oh thank you. MICHAEL You are my whole world. You mean everything to me. Everything you do it's absolutely brilliant and I can't believe this is what you've done. TIM SHAW Give 'em a round of applause. NARRATOR When the boys got their paws on Michael's Celica, it was in worse shape than a Portaloo at a pie-eating contest. But after some serious mechanical mastery, it looks as good as the day it rolled off the factory floor. Under the bonnet, the 2L engine and turbocharger have been refurbished. And alongside the restored suspension stand ready to tackle the next 30 years on the road. Inside, the seats have been match dyed back to their original '90s grey. And the whole thing has been topped off with a fresh set of competition-inspired rally wheels. ALISON Seeing his face now with a big smile on there and he just cannot stop smiling. It's memorable, treasured moments that he's got, that will always be with him forever. NARRATOR But before Michael and Alison drive off into the sunset, the boys have one final surprise up their sleeves. TIM SHAW I just wanna show you something. MICHAEL Yeah. MICHAEL Oh wow. ALISON Oh my god. PAUL LUDLOW Hello Michael and Alison. I'm Paul Ludlow, President of P&O Cruises. I heard what happened and we would be delighted to offer you a holiday whenever you're able to travel. I hope you have a wonderful time. We look forward to welcome you on-board. ALISON How lovely. MICHAEL Oh my word. NARRATOR So they'll finally be able to on the honeymoon they paid for, but never got to enjoy. TIM SHAW So not only has he got his car back, he's also driving down to Southampton to go on their honeymoon! TIM SHAW It's a tough question to answer, but every day that you came out of the house and looked at this car, did you think you'd get it done? MICHAEL No. I used to dream about it begin done, but every now and again I'd come out the house and when I was feeling good, on a good day, I'd wash it and I'd see all the damage and rust, and it used to depress me even more. I never thought, in a million years it could ever look like this ever again. And this has been a bad year for me heathwise and everything, and this is just like icing on the cake now. TIM SHAW Alison wanted to see a smile on your face. MICHAEL Yeah, well, she's seen one today. Yeah . TIM SHAW That's the smile. MICHAEL I'm smiling now . TIM SHAW There is only one thing left for me to do and to say. So Michael it is with great pleasure that I say it's been an honour to meet you, an honour to work on your car. And you have been Car SOS'd. MICHAEL Oh lovely. Thank you Tim, that's brilliant. TIM SHAW Honestly, you so deserve it MICHAEL Thank you, yeah. MICHAEL Drives lovely, don't it? Sounds nice. The exhaust. It's just made my day. It's made my year now. I can forget about all the operations and my heart. It's all. ALISON See that's really important. Taken all those negatives. MICHAEL It's put a big smile back on my face. MICHAEL Today has turned my life into a massive positive now. ###
