CNC_OPERATOR DOOLEY FUZZ JOHN NARRATOR PAUL RECEPTIONIST RIC SARAH TAVARISH TIM NARRATOR This time on car SOS, every petrolheads dream... TIM I defy you to not fall in love with this thing. NARRATOR ...has become a nightmare. FUZZ The British weather has done this car no favours, and so now this is a massive job. NARRATOR Tim asks the big questions... TIM Where's the knob? NARRATOR ...while Fuzz has all the answers. FUZZ The good news is this is out, the bad news is even more rot behind here. NARRATOR So with a little help from a celebrity friend... TIM Yeah, it's Magnum PI! NARRATOR ...can the boys make its owners' automotive dream come true? TIM Any idea what's going on, John? JOHN I think I've just twigged. FUZZ Right, here we are today in glorious Glossop. What's up with you? TIM I've dreamt of this day, Fuzz. I put it down in my mind as a day that would never happen, so much so that I cannot even say the words of the car we're picking up. FUZZ Okay, I'll say it for you, today we are picking up a Ferrari 308 GTS! TIM We're doing a Ferrari. FUZZ Yes, exactly. TIM We're doing a Ferrari. What, Fuzz? FUZZ I know, I know. TIM And the 308 was the car that was made famous by Magnum PI in the 80s and I watched all the episodes and just dreamt of that car. NARRATOR Yes, for many petrolheads, the sight of that prancing horse on the bonnet sends a shiver down the spine. Designed and built by Italian automotive gods, the closest most of us got to getting behind the wheel of one of these 80s pin ups was watching it being driven around by another 80s pin up and his hairy top lip. First released in 1977, the 308 GTS is instantly recognisable by its sleek lines and removable targa top, which can be stowed behind the seats if you want to feel the wind in your moustache. And with a three liter V8 producing over 220 horsepower, sat in between the front and rear axle for improved balance and handling, when you did put your loafer to the floor it delivered all the way to 150 miles an hour. But all that power comes at a price, in 1984, a brand new 308 would have set you back the same as the average house. However, by the late 90s, an oversupply in the used market meant regular automotive aficionados had the once in a lifetime opportunity to pick one up for around the same price as a new Golf. However, having the cash to buy a vintage Ferrari and then having the funds and time to maintain one are two very different things, which is why many were left to slowly rot away. Today, less than ten remain on British roads and a mint condition example will now set you back somewhere in the region of 50 to 85,000. TIM Bit of a different one today, we've got the keys to the garage where the car is. Now the car is owned by John, so we'll have a little look at that, then I'm going to go off and meet Sarah, his daughter. Now she's at home because she's got a little one, can't go out of the house. FUZZ Got you. NARRATOR Right, that's the plan sorted... TIM Come on. NARRATOR ...time for the big moment. TIM Wait, you just wait, just stop for a moment. Just stop for a minute, just think about this. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a colossal day for us here on Car SOS, this is the day we've been waiting for all our lives, we give you the Ferrari 308 GTS. Right, well, I'll go and see Sarah. You enjoy. FUZZ No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, you wait, no, you wait a minute. I can't tell which is the car and which isn't. We need to find every piece of this car that we can get out of this garage because they're rare, difficult to come by and if we do need them, they're going to be very, very costly. TIM I want to talk to you about your dad. What does he do? SARAH So he's now a retired police sergeant. TIM Okay. How did a Ferrari, a 308 GTS, end up in your dad's life? SARAH So he turned 50. TIM Right. Oh, no, it's the midlife crisis. That's what's happening here. Wow. Okay, so this is a dream, this was a dream car for him. SARAH I think he was really lucky because at the time, the prices of Ferraris were quite low. TIM He paid pennies for it. SARAH Yeah, but not exactly because he still had to remortgage the house. TIM What? Really? SARAH Yeah. TIM That must have been a big deal. How often did he use it? Was it like, every Sunday? SARAH No, daily commute to and from work. TIM What? A Ferrari? SARAH Yes. FUZZ It's a 308 GT sitting here right in front of us. But it's rotten. The wheel arches are gone, everything's crunchy, the bonnet, the nose cone. I can see rot all along the side of the car as well. The British weather has done this car no favours and so now this is a massive job. Right, let's take a look at this interior. The seats, well, I've seen worse, I think we'll be able to salvage those. And what's in the engine bay there? I better go and have a look there. Right. This is great news, look at this. From what I can see, It's a bit dark in here, the engine is complete. Right, let's get it out of here. TIM Why is the car in the garage in that state? Because it's hidden like it doesn't exist. SARAH All three of us have decided to buy houses. TIM Yeah and guess what? You've got a useful dad sitting there who can do it, right? SARAH We have a handyman dad. He always puts his children first, even with his own personal interests and hobbies, he'll always put them aside. TIM Outside of being like that as a father, what's he like and how is he respected in the community? SARAH He has a certificate on the wall in the dining room and it's an award that he got for when he went into a burning house, on duty, before waiting for the fire brigade to come. TIM Okay, that demonstrates exactly the kind of guy he is. He's the same person, whether he's a father, whether he's in the community as a police officer, he puts himself second. SARAH He's 62 now. You expect when someone retires they do what they want to do, holidays, you know, interest, hobbies. But this man just keeps going, keeps working, keeps working hard, doing things for me and my two older brothers, for his wife, for the community. By the time he thinks he's got the time to do it, I think he'll be too late and I don't think in its current condition he could afford it, could afford to do it properly. TIM Because it's a Ferrari. SARAH Because it's a Ferrari. NARRATOR Yes, John may have worked his whole life to buy his dream supercar, but as a retyred dad of three and not a millionaire, having the funds and time to maintain a 40 year old slice of automotive pedigree is a whole different battle. FUZZ Well, we're definitely going to need a few favours from a few very good friends here. I know somebody close to here who does a lot and high performance cars. TIM What? Ricity Ric Ric? FUZZ That's right, Ric Wood. Come on, let's just drop in. Shall we drop in for a cuppa? NARRATOR And you'd better go armed with some decent biscuits, because saving this Ferrari has already got the better of John, so will Ric have what it takes to save this prancing horse from a trip to the glue factory? FUZZ Come on then, am I the only one pushing? TIM You're the only one talking. Right. Right, it's in. FUZZ There we go, there's a Ferrari in the house. Wow. TIM It is gorgeous. It's sexy, isn't it, Ric? RIC And for once it's not in boxes, you're giving it to me in one piece. FUZZ I don't get Ferraris. I don't understand why anybody would want a Ferrari. They're driven by attention seekers. It's just like a big Chrysler, "Look at me!" RIC Have you ever driven one? FUZZ No. TIM So let me get this straight, Fuzzbot, your opinion is formed on the fact you've never driven them, you've never worked on them, you've never heard them, you've had nothing to do with them and that's where your opinion comes from? FUZZ Look, when you put it like that. TIM But anyway, moving on. The 308 then, what are you thinking, Ric? RIC What I'm thinking is obviously the body's in a really sad state. FUZZ I think we could probably agree on one thing, these are not built for this climate. RIC They were built with no rust protection in mind. TIM Ric, what are you thinking when you look at that gorgeous engine? RIC I'm thinking it's not been loved for many, many years, we're going to have to give it some love. It's four valves per cylinder. Early fuel injection, they don't like being stood. FUZZ No, no, absolutely. I'd like to get into that engine and find out what's going on with it. But also, I would love to have a look underneath and see how far the corrosion goes. TIM Okay, let's get it in the air. Where's the knob? FUZZ You mean there? TIM I'll do it, you do it, whatever. Go on, get it up. FUZZ Here we go. TIM Look at that. Wow, rust. RIC Oil leaks. FUZZ Yeah, engine oil leaks from all directions, really. TIM But I think we should appreciate the amount of work that's got to be done here, because whatever we look at, whatever we touch, it's rotten as a pear. FUZZ Yeah, it's monumentally rotten. Come and have a look out here. Look. Have you seen the state of this? Look, everywhere. RIC And many of them. TIM Right, so what are my jobs? Where do I start? RIC Biggie, brakes, callipers. Quite specialised. TIM This is going to be a tough one. FUZZ It's bad, isn't it? It's really bad. NARRATOR The boys have taken on the ultimate 1980s pin up, a Ferrari 308 GTS... FUZZ Right, look, there's a great sleeping beast in the back here, Ric. RIC Hopefully, we're going to hear it purr. NARRATOR ...but it's going to take more than a tickle under the chin to get this big cat revved up. Before the team get to work stripping the car down, Ric needs to be certain the engine still turns over. After lying dormant for the past eight years, he has no idea what condition it's in and if it doesn't fire into life, then it might spell the end for John's pride and joy. FUZZ We've tried to get the fuel pump working and it's not going to work, is it? Because it's been sitting around for years and it's about as rotten as the rest of the outside of the car. NARRATOR So without a fuel pump to deliver petrol to the cylinders, Ric's going to step in and take its place. RIC We're going to spray this into the engine. It's not going to do any damage because we're only at tick over, all we want to do is really, like, ascertain whether the engine's not catastrophically damaged. NARRATOR Yes, this gigantic V8 in the back is the beating heart of this Ferrari. But without it, it's nothing more than a drum kit without a drummer. FUZZ Right, turning. Yes, straight away. Wow. NARRATOR It might turn over, but this precision instrument sounds far from perfectly tuned, so a full engine rebuild is most certainly on the cards. But will that be enough to turn it back into the Italian thoroughbred it once was? On top of that, there's the rotten bodywork. Spare panels are now impossible to find, so everything that can't be saved is going to need to be custom made by hand. Once they've pulled that feat of engineering off, to ensure John can stop his 150 mile an hour red rocket, it's going to need a full brake rebuild, which means an expert restoration on those callipers. New pistons, discs and pads and to go with that lot, some very specialised rubber on all four corners. Finally, it's going to need a full respray in iconic Rosso Corsa red paint. So it's straight onto the spanners as the team begin the painstaking task of restoring this Italian masterpiece. First, they need to assess each panel individually before starting the painstaking process of removing the rust and rot, revealing the true extent of the damage beneath. The engine is undergoing a complete rebuild because, just like if Usain Bolt had spent a decade on the sofa eating pizza, this piece of performance engineering needs some thorough mechanical attention before it attempts a sprint. So while that keeps everyone in the workshop tied up, Tim's gone full Evel Knievel. But he's not jumping any buses today, he's visiting the experts at Brake Engineering to see if they can help restore the 308's finely engineered callipers and pistons. TIM Paul. PAUL Tim, how are you? TIM Hello mate. Right, Ferrari 308 GTS. PAUL Nice. TIM What can you tell straight away from looking at these two? PAUL Well, they've obviously been on the car a long time, you can see by the condition of them. I would imagine the pistons are worn, the seals are worn. NARRATOR To determine if any of the callipers precision components can be saved... PAUL Let's get stripping, Matt. NARRATOR ...they first need to be fully stripped down. TIM Right, calliper stripped, here we go. What have we got? PAUL Okay, so luckily all the components have come off okay. TIM You can see a lot of rust on the inside of there. PAUL Yeah but that'll be all be shot blasted. Any rubber components that we discard, we throw away wherever, but as you can see, they're perished, they're worn. So that would have allowed the water ingress to get in. Same with the seals, you can actually feel some dirt on the seals going through, so that would have damaged the pistons as it's moving up and down. TIM Right, okay. So those Pistons are shot? PAUL Them Pistons. We 100% use brand new pistons in all our callipers. TIM So the whole point of a calliper is to use fluid to move those two pistons inwards, to squeeze the discs that are rotating and stop your car from moving... PAUL Exactly. TIM ...and if those things are nadgered, if they've got issues or grit in there, then the pressure you'll get, well, they'll be leaking fluid and therefore lower pressure. PAUL Exactly. TIM So the pistons are mega important then? PAUL Yeah, yeah. NARRATOR Even more so when you're trying to stop a V8 precision engineered supercar, which is why it's critical Paul and Tim make the four new pistons from only the finest materials. TIM Right. PAUL Can you grab some of that bar, please? TIM What's that for? PAUL That's what we're going to make the new pistons out of. TIM What? PAUL Yep. TIM That's going to be what we make the pistons out of? PAUL Yeah. Trust me. TIM That old rotten old rusty bar, really? PAUL Yep. NARRATOR Oh, well, at least that rusty bar will be in keeping with the rest of the car. FUZZ This Ferrari is a lucky, rotten old Ferrari. We reckon that if this car had been where it had been sitting for all those years for just one more year it might have been unsavable. But it's left just enough integrity for us to know where everything should be, because what we found is loads and loads of extra rot around the front. Work has been continuing apace, we've got new uprights, new tubular members in here and then down at the bottom, new bracing members across the bottom there. Along the front here, we have whole new sections of metal that have been let in, but we still have tons of galloping rot on this side here, on this sill, so that all has to come off, that needs to be repaired. There's nothing for it, off with the normal bins, on with the safety versions. Let's get cutting. NARRATOR This area of the 308 is comprised of three steel panels. The first is an exterior layer painted in the iconic Ferrari Red, behind this is the intermediate panel that provides structural integrity and support. Finally, in this lower section of the body, there's an additional level of reinforcement to help keep the chassis rigid in the bends. FUZZ Right, well, the good news is this is out. NARRATOR Yes, from one bit of rusty metal to four others,. how exactly is Tim going to turn that bit of steel bar into pistons fit for a Ferrari? TIM Hope that was right. So the steel is loaded in the machine. PAUL You've loaded the steel in, now we've got the drawing of the actual piston that we need to replace on your callipers. So what we'll do now, we'll send the program to the machine and you can see the piston actively being made. TIM Simple as that. So that rusty piece of nadger over there is going to get turned into a beautiful, shiny piston for a Ferrari 308? PAUL Yes it is. TIM Right, go. NARRATOR Working precisely to the drawing, the computer guided CNC machine is able to use its different tool heads to cut, mill and rout the steel bar into four new pistons in a matter of minutes. TIM How precise are they, in terms of to a millimetre or to a micron? CNC OPERATOR Microns. TIM Microns? CNC OPERATOR Yeah, ten microns. TIM Ten microns? CNC OPERATOR Yeah. TIM So a human hair is what, 50 microns isn't it? CNC OPERATOR Yeah. TIM Here it comes. No way. Can I grab that? That is hot. PAUL It'll be hot, yeah. TIM That is absolutely gorgeous. NARRATOR Next, the pistons rejoin their cleaned and refurbished calliper cousins. And that's one job taken care of. TIM It's lovely watching this being put together because it's so precise. You can tell he's done this a million times. PAUL Exactly. Yeah. TIM I cannot believe what I'm seeing here. Look at that. Wonderful. NARRATOR But it isn't the only part for John's car that had to be rebuilt from scratch. Fuzz has handcrafted a new intermediate sill. The next challenge is to give it strength, bizarrely, by filling it full of holes. FUZZ Now, if you look on the original piece of intermediate sill, these holes are pushed through and raised at this point. Now that adds adds strength, it means that I can't easily bend it at that point, it's making it into a peak, like a truncated cone, which all goes to make the rigidity of the car much greater without adding any weight. So I'm going to do that on the new piece here. NARRATOR To add the raised edges to the new sill, Fuzz places a conical ring underneath the panel. Then, with some help from the press. FUZZ Okay, we've got pressure. Pressure is rising. I think we are about there. Right, let's see what happens when I remove it, hopefully it's relatively central. Yeah, not too bad, really. NARRATOR Just five more to go. FUZZ Right. Well, there's our lovely now strengthened panel, ready to go in the car. Go and weld that in. NARRATOR It's ingenious engineering techniques like these strengthening holes that make the 308 a supercar. By not only reducing weight, they also stiffen the chassis, improving the handling in the corners. FUZZ Right, so we've probably got about 80% of the bodywork done now, so that's brilliant, the strength is coming back into the structure. But then we've got to get all the prettiness back into the car as well. So there's a lot of work still to be done. I never thought it would be this bad, but it is. NARRATOR And the bodywork isn't the only part of this car that's causing major headaches. After successfully firing the engine into life, the team has hit a roadblock in the shape of the engine block. FUZZ We've been having a terrible problem with this Ferrari engine. I mean, a real, utter nightmare. The cylinder heads were stuck on fast, they wouldn't pull off? RIC They wouldn't pull off, we tried everything. We managed to get the heads off eventually. So we ended up having to wedge them up and slowly get them up like that. NARRATOR After fractionally wedging the cylinder heads up off the block, Ric had to resort to cutting through the 20 steel studs that hold them in position, which has caused a major problem. FUZZ We've got a position now where I can see that we've still got the remnants of cylinder head studs in the block. RIC So what we've done, we chopped these off level, so the thick bit is in the block, we've cut it there, then we mill it down. FUZZ So it's exactly centrally down? RIC Absolutely. FUZZ That's the thin, tiny remains of one of these actual studs. That is utterly, utterly bonkers, utterly incredible. And you can see the top bit of the thread there that's just remaining. NARRATOR To remove the remaining stud, Ric's using a computer controlled drill that's able to mill with a level of precision finer than a human hair, and when combined with the tungsten carbide bit, which is a material that's almost as hard as diamond, it's able to chop through the steel studs like a hot knife through butter. RIC So we're just in the process of doing this. So yeah, we've got 18 to do. FUZZ Right. Well, we better get on, haven't we? RIC Yeah. NARRATOR In a Car SOS first, Tim and Fuzz are tackling every petrolheads dream, a Ferrari. This iconic 308 GTS is owned by Derbyshire's very own Magnum PI, former police officer John, who remortgaged his house to buy it almost 15 years ago. But after giving up his retirement to help his three children renovate their homes, rather than maintaining his 40 year old supercar, this prancing pony has barely managed a trot. SARAH He always puts his children first, even with his own personal interests and hobbies, he'll always put him aside. NARRATOR Since the boys got it into the workshop, restoring this Italian masterpiece has been about as challenging as eating spaghetti with no hands. The chassis was in far worse condition than expected, 90% of the lower body has had to be replaced with fresh metal. But now it's finally ready for a respray in iconic Rosso Corsa paint, and if that wasn't difficult enough, work on the engine has been anything but straightforward. Not only did they have to cut through 20 studs to be able to get the cylinder heads off, they then had to mill out what remained using a precision computer guided drill, which has meant a task that should have taken hours, has ended up taking days. So while the team finally get started on the delicate task of rebuilding the three litre engine, Tim's putting Fuzz behind the wheel of a 308 to convince him he's got Ferraris all wrong. TIM Look at that face. FUZZ What? TIM First time in a Ferrari. You're not feeling it, are you? FUZZ No, I'm definitely not feeling it. Come on. TIM I've got something for you to get you in the zone. Yeah! [LAUGHS]. Mate, you suit that. FUZZ What have you done? TIM It's Magnum PI. NARRATOR It looks more like Super Mario to me. TIM Alright, feedback. Come on, what's it like? FUZZ The pinnacle is wrongly positioned, very poorly positioned. As it is, ergonomically, this car is not really set up for me. But let me give you a little bit of feedback from the driving experience. The steering is heavy, it's not even particularly quick by modern standards. TIM Okay, here we go. You get your foot down now, we're getting a few revs. Whoa! [LAUGHS]. Come on, son, you've got to be loving this. Ferrari! What you're doing is you're beginning to push the mechanics of this, and if you overlook all the stigma stuff and just work on the driver experience and the engineering, it'll win you over. I defy it, I defy you to not fall in love with this thing. FUZZ Well, I am, I'm starting to appreciate it because it's very sure footed, giving me a little bit more confidence. But I'm not all the way there yet. TIM There's a reason why these things are just globally loved and it's not just the way they look, these are designed by world leading mechanical engineers and automotive gods. You are getting into this now. You are enjoying this now. For anyone who's never driven a Ferrari, what could you compare it to? FUZZ It has an almost go kart like experience of its holding capability and its quickness around the corners. See, it's not kicking up a fuss and it's got no fancy gizmos on it at all. This car is 40 years plus old. There's a lot of things about it that make me feel a little bit uncomfortable, but my driving experience of it, it's a ten out of ten. TIM Well I very never. Ten out of ten from Mr. Fuzzbot. FUZZ I cannot believe I'm saying it. TIM Ferrari virgin to Ferrari convert. FUZZ It's a great car. NARRATOR And fingers crossed he'll soon be able to say the same about John's GTS, because the bottom end of the engine has been rebuilt, the pistons refurbished and a set of new rings fitted. But there's still a very long way to go. To make matters worse, another eight problems lurking on the horizon in the shape of the Ferrari's fuel injectors. FUZZ Each injector should deliver a nice, even patterned spray, like a conical spray, and also in equal amounts. NARRATOR But after sitting unused for the past eight years, there's a good chance any old petrol left inside them will have created a build up of residue blocking the tiny holes in the nozzles. FUZZ So on with the button. As you can see, two of them have delivered pretty much nothing, one has delivered a nice little dribble. NARRATOR Yes, that doesn't scream supercar performance, does it? FUZZ What we need to do is just run these through a cleaning cycle. Hopefully once the cleaning fluid has cleaned out all of that build up, all of that varnishy old petrol build up, hopefully we'll get a full, evenly matched set. But that is going to take hours. Let's drain it off and let the machine do its job. NARRATOR So while the machine works its magic, Tim's off to see a man who never gets tired of talking about tyres... TIM Dooley, Dooley. DOOLEY Now, then, captain. TIM Hello mate, how are you doing, you alright? DOOLEY I'm alright, yeah. NARRATOR ...in the hope that he'll be able to provide the right rubber for John's rare Ferrari. TIM What are we lining up here? These aren't all for the 308, are they? DOOLEY Indeed. So the first 308s were basically a continuation of the Dino. That's what the Dino fitted, the GT4 fitted that and the 308 GTB and GTS. The first ones. TIM Okay. DOOLEY And that's a 70 profile tyre on a small 14 inch wheel. TIM So a 14, a small wheel with a deep tyre, 70 profile tyre. So from the side it looks nice and deep. I mean, it doesn't really feel like a Ferrari, when you look at that it looks a little bit agricultural. You wouldn't expect to see one of those on a Ferrari 308. So what's this second one here? What's that one? DOOLEY That's the Michelin TRX. It was a huge leap forward in tyre technology in 1974, 75. It was the development of the ability to do the ultra low profile tyres. TIM Right. NARRATOR With just a 55mm profile, the TRXs not only gave the GTS a more sporty look, their innovative tread pattern also improved the car's handling. But for all their brilliance, they had one major flaw. DOOLEY Here's the difficulty, the Michelin TRX tyre, brilliant, it is a brilliant tyre and the whole system was brilliant, but you needed a specific, different rim. So all the other tyre manufacturers were making low profile tyres would just make them in interim sizes so you could put them on any car. Whereas to run the TRX, you had to have that specific rim and unfortunately, that was the nail in the coffin for the TRX. TIM So which one are we going for our car? DOOLEY You're going down this route, P7's, epic tyre. TIM So a Pirelli P7 on our car? Right. NARRATOR And the best thing is they'll slip nicely onto John's existing rims. DOOLEY Oodles of grip, they were fitted to all the most powerful cars of the day. De Tomaso Pantera, Lamborghini Countach. TIM What a car. DOOLEY 930 Porsche. All that crazy, powerful stuff. TIM All my poster cars. DOOLEY Exactly. NARRATOR And talking of pinups, how is Britain's sexiest mechanic 1994 getting on? FUZZ So here we are with the car, now looking beautiful, painted and absolutely pristine. NARRATOR And if that wasn't hot enough to maintain the temperature of those 220 horses, the original radiator is being put back in along with the existing suspension arms and cleaned up jigsaw puzzle cabin carpet. TIM Right, so this is the paint code sticker on the Ferrari, I'm just about to stick it on. And it says there look, Rosso Corso Ferrari 300. And that, believe it or not, the Prancing horse, dates back to, now bear in mind the first Ferrari didn't hit the streets till 1947, that goes back to, you'll love this, to 1918. And on the site there was this guy called Francesco Borota, who was an Italian fighter ace from World War One, 1918, used to paint that on the side of his planes, which is fascinating, isn't it? FUZZ Well, yeah, it'd be fascinating if it were true. TIM Well, hang on then, let's just get, right, I'm just going to ring a Ferrari owner. NARRATOR Yes, before this descends into a full blown argument, let's get help from an expert and not just any old expert, YouTube megastar Tavarish. TIM Tavarish. TAVARISH Hey, Tim. TIM I need a favour. Can you tell us if you know this, the origin of the Ferrari logo? TAVARISH Oh, that's super easy. There was this Italian pilot in World War one, he didn't make it, but his family, his mum in particular, carried on the legacy of putting the prancing Horse on things and then she met up with Enzo Ferrari and he told him that he should put the prancing horse on his race cars, and then the rest is sort of history. FUZZ Right. NARRATOR Hang on. He's knowledgeable about cars and wears a hat, was Fuzz on tour in America in the mid 80s, by any chance? TAVARISH Alright, good luck with your Magnum PI car, bye. FUZZ Cheers. See you later, man. NARRATOR Now we've got a handle on the past, it's time to look to the future, because with time running out, descending from Ric Wood's heaven is an angelic sight, John's rebuilt three litre, 220 horsepower Ferrari V8. It's had the ultimate makeover. The timing belts have been replaced, heads skimmed, there's new main bearings, as well as cleaned up fuel injectors and a brand new fuel pump. But will it run without Ric acting as a carburettor? FUZZ Hey-hey, that's great, isn't it? That sounds lovely. It really purrs, doesn't it? RIC Sweet as a nut. FUZZ Fantastic. It does sound absolutely superb. Hold on. TIM Sorry, guys. I don't quite know how to break this to you. I need to read a text from you, from Sarah. FUZZ Right. TIM "Tim, I'm sorry to drop this on you, but my dad is going down to his garage the day after tomorrow to get some stuff and I cannot get him out of it." The plan was, this car goes back in four days, we're going to have to scrap that reveal, it's going to have to go back tomorrow. I don't know quite how to make this happen because this is just fresh off the press. RIC I've got an idea. I'm staging an opening in about a month's time, but I could bring it forward. TIM Of what? Opening of what? RIC My new building. TIM Where is it? RIC Three miles away. FUZZ Well, that at least means that we can work on this until the very last minute and get it over there. TIM Hang on, hang on. So can we put some stuff out online saying you've got this opening coming up so she can show him and he might, he's a car guy, right? I'm sorry to tell you this, guys, but we now have 24 hours to finish this car. NARRATOR Let's hope nobody had dinner plans, because not only do they need to get the car finished, they've also got to arrange an open day at Ric's new workshop, all within the next 24 hours. Ouch. NARRATOR After working through the night and putting in over 1,000 hours in total, John's Ferrari is finally ready to hand back to him. FUZZ Doesn't it look utterly amazing? I mean, what a transformation from the utter wreck that came out of the garage. I love these-- TIM Ferrari fan. FUZZ I'm, well, yeah, I am a bit of a Ferrari fan now. TIM Here's the thing, when John comes through the door with Sarah through here, everybody needs to, it needs to feel like you're at an open event. You're just coming down here, it's clearly work in progress, it's a bit of an exclusive thing. Be looking around the cars, please. We're going to put this on the ramp over there, which will go up and hide it. At a certain point, hopefully John will be mingling with you guys, wander over there, the car comes down and that is it. NARRATOR So with Fuzz and the Ferrari in position on the ramp, the other guests briefed and sent to enjoy the fake open day and the crew pretending to capture the event for Ric's social media, it's time for Sarah to bring in her dad, who's been told he's getting a day off the DIY... RECEPTIONIST Good morning. SARAH Morning. RECEPTIONIST Welcome to Ric Wood Motorsport open day. NARRATOR ...to go and look at some very special cars with his family. RIC Alright? Nice to meet you. It's Ric. Right, welcome. JOHN Thank you. RIC Let me show you around. I take it you're obviously car enthusiasts? JOHN Yes. NARRATOR Now it's up to Ric to manoeuvre John into position without arousing suspicion. RIC Yeah basically, Ford built three of these, so they were trying to beat the BMW CSLs in 1974. NARRATOR With John completely unaware of what's happening right behind him, it's time to bring his pride and joy down from the heavens... FUZZ Here we go. NARRATOR ...and send in Tim in the perfect disguise. JOHN The 80s that. ? RIC It's a five litre, so it's based on a Chevrolet, so it's not a flat plane cranks or anything. JOHN Yes. TIM Ric, are you, sorry. Are you expecting a set of BBS's? RIC Yeah. 12 o'clock. TIM Yeah, they're here now. Where do I feel like I know you from? Were you a police officer? JOHN Yeah. TIM Yeah? You don't recognise me? JOHN No. NARRATOR Oh, turns out he didn't need the box after all. Perhaps he's more of a Fuzz fan. TIM This is a stab in the dark, John. JOHN Yes. TIM The guy with a Ferrari? JOHN Well, yeah, an old, knackered one. RIC What colour is it? JOHN Red. RIC It's the only colour, isn't it? TIM Is it? Sorry, mate. Is it anything like that one? JOHN [LAUGHS]. Yeah it is. That's lovely. Yeah. So you've got one of them? RIC I haven't. TIM He hasn't. I haven't. Any idea what's going on, John? JOHN I think I've just twigged. [LAUGHS]. TIM What's going on? JOHN I reckon, right. [LAUGHS]. TIM There we are. JOHN Heard about you. TIM And I'm the other guy. John, hello, mate, Tim, nice to meet you, from Car SOS. This is Fuzz from car SOS. FUZZ There you go, John. JOHN Oh my God. TIM That there. JOHN I'm shaking. TIM That is your Ferrari. JOHN Yeah Wow. TIM Sarah, come on in, come on in. Explain to your dad why you wrote to us. SARAH Because you put everything on hold, your dreams, your interests. You put me, Tom and James first. So, yeah, this is like, for you. TIM There are also a few other people you might recognise. Guys, come on out. Come on, everybody, come on over. Come on. Recognise these guys, the tall one, that's your son, whose house you're also working on. JOHN Yeah. TIM Come on out, guys, come on. JOHN And the boys. [LAUGHS]. TIM So John, that is your Ferrari. Can we have a round of applause, to John! NARRATOR The last time John saw his estranged Italian supercar, it was languishing in his garage covered in rust, on the verge of being unsalvageable. But thanks to Ric and the boys, this proud prancing stallion is ready to be released back into the wild. Under the bonnet, the engine has been completely rebuilt by hand, there's a new fuel pump and spotlessly clean set of injectors. The callipers have been refurbished, pistons rebuilt and there's new performance discs, pads and fresh rubber on all four corners. Inside, it's as clean and tidy as Magnum PI's moustache. The rotten bodywork has been grinded, welded and sanded to perfection and the icing on top, a coat of Ferrari Rosso Corsa paint. TIM How does it feel? FUZZ Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. You know the smell of her. I don't know if you know. She's called Isabella. TIM I didn't know that. One question, why a Ferrari? Why this, why a 308? JOHN Well, I know everybody probably is going to think it's due to Magnum and no, it's just the design. This particular car design, for me, is beautiful. The actual driving position is horrendous, but to drive it is just perfection. TIM Do you know why you've been Car SOS'd? Do you get it or not? JOHN No, I don't think I deserve it really. You know, I've got good health and, you know, I enjoy helping me children and anybody else. TIM You see John, this is, you've just summed up precisely why we've done this car for you, because there are many dads out there, such as yourself, who dedicate their lives to helping other people and don't even really notice they're doing it. And their projects get put aside, like this was left to rot in a garage, because your kids and other people in your community needed help, so you chose to prioritise them over your project. How much of your headspace at the moment, as you sit here, is thinking about the jobs you've got to do for other people? Give me a number on that. JOHN Oh, 90%. TIM 90%? JOHN Yeah. TIM Right. Well, this is the law. You've worked within the law before as a police officer. The law is, this car is you switching off and enjoying 100% being you and not thinking about jobs you've got to do for other people that are stacking up. Can you make that happen for me? JOHN I can. TIM So this is for you, representing the love for all the dads out there. Get out there and enjoy it, right? JOHN I will. TIM Go on then. JOHN [LAUGHS]. Surreal. TIM Yeah? NARRATOR Now there's just one thing left to do. But with Sarah heavily pregnant and not up for squeezing herself into a supercar, it's Ric who gets the pleasure of John's maiden voyage in his restored 308. JOHN I compare the difference in the engine. RIC I suspect it was never quite in this condition when you had it. JOHN No. RIC Is it what you remembered? Is it as good as you remembered or? JOHN Oh, it's better. And Ric, you've done a fantastic job. You and the guys, amazing, absolutely amazing. ###
