ALL ANDRE_MILLAN BOY CESAR_MILLAN CONRAD_LUJAN DAKOTA ERIC_CALDERON GIRL JENNIFER_CALDERON KIDS LILY LILY_LUJAN LUJAN_FAMILY NARRATOR NARRTOR NARRATOR Coming up CESAR MILLAN Tsch, tsch, tsch, tsch NARRATOR Two of cesar millans most serious cases NARRATOR A rottweiler threatening children CONRAD LUJAN Now you have a 110-pound Rottweiler jumping on a child That was petrifying for us NARRATOR and a pitbull thats already bitten ERIC CALDERON One of our sons, he got bit pretty bad where he needed stitches CESAR MILLAN This is a very serious situation Anything that gets near him, he wants to attack NARRATOR Two dogs --- two desperate familes --- on this special episode of Cesar Millan Better Human Better Dog CESAR MILLAN So I'm on my way to the Lujan family They have five children, three dogs They have a red-zone situation They have a dog named Kuma, who is a Rottweiler, who is going after people, dogs, and children This is a very serious situation NARRTOR Red zone cases are Cesars most urgent cases with dogs that are dangerously aggressive towards humans or other animals CESAR MILLAN It's definitely a 911 CONRAD LUJAN You ready? Upside down You're going to catch Ready? Count of three One, two, three! LUJAN FAMILY Hi, we are the Lujan family CONRAD LUJAN My name is Conrad This is my wife, Lily We have five children, four boys, one girl, and we have three dogs Kuma, Coana, and Ahsoka Coana, she's about 14 years old Very motherly, she's the watchdog of the house Then we have Ahsoka, who is four months old She's just a playful puppy She just wants to chew on everything and everybody And then we have Kuma LILY LUJAN Kuma is two years old We got him when he was three and a half months CONRAD LUJAN It was love at first lick I would say Definitely He's very loving to the children, very loving to our family He's very playful We were the big family with the three dogs walking up and down the block That's how our neighbors looked at us But unfortunately, we're not able to do that any longer CONRAD LUJAN Kuma! LILY LUJAN No No CONRAD LUJAN Watch it Watch it! CONRAD LUJAN We had a break-in unfortunately in our home And after the break-in, everything changed for us After the police had left, I went into the backyard to check on the dogs Coana started to cower like she was going to be hit, and then we went to talk to Kuma He would back away, kind of unsure So we knew that something happened, but what happened, we really don't know LILY LUJAN Things took a turn for the worse after the burglary We started seeing changes in Kuma He just started barking at everyone He was less people friendly And then, when we try to play with him out in the front, he lunges at the gate CONRAD LUJAN He's becoming dog-aggressive, very difficult to walk him The minute he sees a dog, he tenses up He'll fixate on them, and he'll try to go after the dog He's very strong, and if he pulls and that leash happens to slip out of my hand, I have no doubt in my mind that there would definitely be a very bad dog fight He could definitely kill the other dog because of his size LILY LUJAN It's worrying because he used to listen, but now, he kind of blocks out what we're saying CONRAD LUJAN Since we have five children and their friends come over And recently, when the children were running around, Kuma tried to go after the children Now you have a 110-pound <49 kilograms> Rottweiler jumping on a child That was petrifying for us, and that's when we unfortunately had to muzzle him Now that his behavior has changed, our world has changed We're not able to go on the walks We can't even take him to a dog park anymore because of the aggression LILY LUJAN Yeah CONRAD LUJAN My children suffer from it because now their friends don't want to come over and spend time with them because everyone's afraid of the dog So again, now we have to lock the dog up and it just starts to change the whole dynamics of a family being together LILY LUJAN We're so fragmented right now with everything that's going on with Kuma That we really just want to feel whole again CONRAD LUJAN We've tried all the avenues that were available to us, and we really don't have any other roads to go LILY LUJAN Go ahead CONRAD LUJAN Sorry Sorry Yeah LILY LUJAN We don't want to give up, but this is creating so much stress and so much anxiety all the time, that if we can't correct it, Kuma will have to leave our family And I cannot imagine that happening CESAR MILLAN Hello, hello, hello! CONRAD LUJAN Oh, it's Cesar CESAR MILLAN How are you guys? How are you? KIDS Hello CONRAD LUJAN How are you doing, sir? CESAR MILLAN Really good Really good What do we have here? CONRAD LUJAN This is the Lujan family CESAR MILLAN The Lujan family Nice to meet you all Okay CONRAD LUJAN And then we have our little puppy, Ahsoka CESAR MILLAN Ahsoka? CONRAD LUJAN We have our old lady here This is Coana CESAR MILLAN Okay CONRAD LUJAN And then, we have the reason why we're all here CESAR MILLAN Uh-hmm The man himself Kuma CONRAD LUJAN He's aggressive towards other dogs CESAR MILLAN Okay CONRAD LUJAN And recently we've been seeing that he's being a little aggressive towards some friends who come over with their children CESAR MILLAN Uh-hmm CONRAD LUJAN And that's a big concern for us CESAR MILLAN Uh-hmm CONRAD LUJAN The children were running around, playing, and he lunged towards our friends' children CESAR MILLAN Okay Okay CONRAD LUJAN So it's kind of a ball of issues that we're hoping that you would be able to help us with CESAR MILLAN Watch his reaction CONRAD LUJAN Stay Whoa CESAR MILLAN This is bad LILY LUJAN We can't even walk him We'll go on pack walks with our friends, and we can't even take Kuma with us because he's being a little too aggressive with the other dogs CESAR MILLAN Right LILY LUJAN And I think that's, oh man, I got emotional I think that's the hardest part is because, since he's been a puppy, he's so, I mean, he's such a good dog and then we just can't take him outside the gate and it breaks our heart like all the time CESAR MILLAN Yeah When did you notice his behavior becoming more aggressive? CONRAD LUJAN Someone broke into our house, and these guys were in the very back, back CESAR MILLAN Yeah CONRAD LUJAN And that day, we went back there, and Coana, once I went to her I was like, "Hey," she went like this And then this guy did one of these CESAR MILLAN Right CONRAD LUJAN And that wasn't their character, so we didn't know if something was thrown at him, whether it hit, we don't know what happened But there was definitely a change in their personality CESAR MILLAN A shift CONRAD LUJAN Yes A shift, but we don't know if, would that cause some of with what's going on? CESAR MILLAN Yeah Especially if you don't help them to stabilize CESAR MILLAN I believe dogs live in the moment, not in the past, but sometimes when they suffer a really traumatic event, it's possible the dog can become fearful, aggressive, and easily triggered So as pet parents, it's our job to reestablish a sense of stability back into their environment If you don't, you can actually make things worse CESAR MILLAN But definitely you do have a case that if he gets out, he could hurt someone CONRAD LUJAN He has Yeah LILY LUJAN That's our worry CESAR MILLAN Let's just take him for a walk Conrad, show me how you lead him Let's go CONRAD LUJAN We're coming out All right? CESAR MILLAN Yeah CONRAD LUJAN Relax CESAR MILLAN Whoa Yeah, he's really easily triggered CESAR MILLAN When you have an easily triggered dog that's the size and strength of a Rottweiler, it can be too much for most people to handle Conrad is a big guy, but it's not his fault he's unable to control all Kuma's power and volatility CESAR MILLAN I just need a minute with him Let me take him down the block Here, let's get this harness off of you Tsch, tsch, tsch Hey Tsch Hey This aggressive Rottweiler, which by the way, what you have is a territorial Rottweiler LILY LUJAN Oh, okay CONRAD LUJAN Oh Oh, okay CESAR MILLAN Yeah So what he's doing is territorial CESAR MILLAN I can see now the real issue with Kuma After the break in, he's become very territorial, meaning he gets aggressive when he feels his territory is being invaded, like when I moved in close to remove his harness Anything that gets near him, he wants to attack It makes it dangerous because he's being territorial to anything, dogs, cats, anything LILY LUJAN Right CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN Because this is such a powerful pack, I need to bring them to the safety of my ranch to begin their rehabilitation CESAR MILLAN We have to keep working This is something that I would like for you to do as a couple only LILY & CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN You know, so bring the pack of dogs and leave the pack of kids behind LILY LUJAN I'm so excited CESAR MILLAN All right See you tomorrow LILY & CONRAD LUJAN See you tomorrow! CONRAD LUJAN Thank you, sir CESAR MILLAN Yeah LILY LUJAN Thank you CONRAD LUJAN No way There's a llama LILY LUJAN There's a llama! CONRAD LUJAN There's like herd of llamas Yesterday when Cesar said that Kuma's a red case, my heart dropped I guess LILY LUJAN Yeah CONRAD LUJAN I knew he's bad, but I didn't he was that bad LILY LUJAN Yeah Ah! Oh my God CESAR MILLAN Okay, guys So this is a great opportunity Every time you move a dog from one place to another place the new environment gives them an open mind, so it's easier to get through to them CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN Everything we're doing with Kuma is to work on his territorial issues CESAR MILLAN Go through that door over there Look Yeah Take the leashes off We want to get him comfortable in my dog park, so he feels like it's his territory CESAR MILLAN Beautiful Okay Come on in, guys CESAR MILLAN Then I want to introduce some of the most friendly, happy-go-lucky dogs in order to take baby steps teaching Kuma that not everything that approaches is a threat CESAR MILLAN Let me get that Tsch Hey! Hold on, Jaimito Wait, now they're both charging CONRAD LUJAN Coana, relax! CESAR MILLAN We have to correct her behavior first! Hey! Tsch CESAR MILLAN Hey! Tsch Hey! I got it I got it Tsch So she's been the boss for a while Coana LILY LUJAN Yeah CESAR MILLAN So what we're finding right now is that she taught them that CONRAD LUJAN Is the culprit LILY LUJAN Yeah CESAR MILLAN Yeah, yeah CONRAD LUJAN Yeah CESAR MILLAN Now I can see that the old girl Coana has taught her little brother Kuma how to charge, which could lead to aggression CESAR MILLAN This is something that I couldn't plan for it CONRAD LUJAN Right CESAR MILLAN Because she never did anything wrong yesterday CONRAD LUJAN Yeah LILY LUJAN Uh-hmm CESAR MILLAN Now you know who taught him LILY LUJAN How to behave CESAR MILLAN How to, how to, like, charge the fence, but you saw she went after me Good thing she had no teeth That's like an old girl CESAR MILLAN Coana's charging is not particularly dangerous What's dangerous is how Kuma has adopted that behavior Now I want to see how he behaves when we tether the older girl to the fence to remove her from the situation CESAR MILLAN Okay Now, we're going to let the other dogs in I want to see how Kuma reacts Hey He can charge Tsch There you go, beautiful Tsch Hey Hey LILY LUJAN Like hides behind her CONRAD LUJAN Yeah CESAR MILLAN That's right That's his boss CONRAD LUJAN So she's pack leader CESAR MILLAN Yeah Come this way I want to show you something Look how much power she has over you CONRAD LUJAN He's staying with her LILY LUJAN Staying with her CESAR MILLAN Instead of the human And they should choose the humans, but because she gives them directions, and she tells him what to do, and she has pretty much raised him LILY LUJAN Yeah CESAR MILLAN You know, from a dog point of view That's why his loyalty is to her CONRAD LUJAN Oh, that's amazing LILY LUJAN We did not know that Coana was the pack leader at all She's actually the one feeding the behavior to him So that was a humbling experience for us, because we thought we were the pack leaders CONRAD LUJAN My mind's still blown that he hasn't come over to us LILY LUJAN Yeah He's still standing next to her CONRAD LUJAN And I thought we were buddies CESAR MILLAN That's right Buddies versus leader, two different things CONRAD LUJAN Two different things CESAR MILLAN If you're only buddies with your dog, you're never going to be able to snap them out of a frightened mindset, like this break-in created They'll see everyone as a potential danger CONRAD LUJAN We have a bigger issue than we thought CESAR MILLAN Yep To fix this, Conrad and Lily need to head home and practice real leadership by walking the dogs often When encountering other people or other dogs, they should guide Kuma to sit calmly, and remain under the pet parents' leadership NARRATOR Conrad and Lily begin to work with their dogs to re-establish trust and security within the home CONRAD LUJAN Good boy, Kuma Sit We had some homework, Cesar wanted us to take Kuma on a pack walk with our family CONRAD LUJAN Look how good he's doing, son Right? CONRAD LUJAN Making sure that Kuma's following us instead of Coana He's not even paying attention to her Look, he's locked in on you LILY LUJAN Yeah I think he's definitely stopped deferring to Coana, and he sees us as the leaders now CONRAD LUJAN But Kuma's still being territorial He's still charging the fence We need some insight on how to fix that Good morning, sir CESAR MILLAN Unusual, unusual weather here today at the DPC CONRAD LUJAN It's nice and hot today CESAR MILLAN Yes I can control animals, but I can't control weather CONRAD LUJAN All right Should we bring them out? CESAR MILLAN Yeah Bring them out Bring them out CESAR MILLAN After watching the homework, you can see Kuma is now following Conrad and Lily instead of Coana But his territorial aggression is a learned behavior, and he's been doing it whether the old girl is present or not It's his most dangerous behavior, so to address it we need to isolate him CONRAD LUJAN Good Let's go There we go NARRATOR In his dog park, Cesar will introduce large breed dogs that Kuma may feel threatened by If the dog reacts aggressively, Conrad and Lily need to show leadership using their energy to block him, and snap him out of his territorial mindset CESAR MILLAN You can take the muzzle off CONRAD LUJAN Come here, buddy CESAR MILLAN The reason why I asked you to take the muzzle off is because he's in a good state of mind CESAR MILLAN All right, let's get a dog! CESAR MILLAN Let's go Correct him LILY LUJAN Tsch Tsch CESAR MILLAN No charging CONRAD LUJAN Let me go help LILY LUJAN Can you go corner him? And then get him away CONRAD LUJAN Tsch Tsch LILY LUJAN Now he's backing up CESAR MILLAN But then he goes to do it over here Okay That's better Come a little closer, Ariana The brain's still over there Tsch CONRAD LUJAN Tsch CESAR MILLAN & LILY LUJAN There we go CESAR MILLAN Nice By, beautiful teamwork, by the way Beautiful Beautiful CONRAD LUJAN Thanks CESAR MILLAN Now we're seeing some real progress Conrad and Lily physically blocked Kuma to snap him out of his territorial mindset, which brought him to calm surrender CESAR MILLAN All right Let's do it again CONRAD LUJAN I suppose we're gonna have to do it again perfect CESAR MILLAN Let's get another dog! Look at that That's beautiful Good boy That's right His chest is not tense LILY LUJAN Uh-hmm CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN You know? His head is not high You can see the smile on the face CESAR MILLAN Once the pet parents corrected him, they were able to get him to a calm surrender From that point forward, he didn't even need a correction when the other dogs walked by How cool is that? CESAR MILLAN This strategy is incredible Super proud of you guys Look at that When it comes to dogs, look, he's already saying, "Dog means happy-go-lucky" NARRATOR The Lujans are already seeing a change in Kuma Cesar sends them home for the night to practice blocking Kuma when hes triggered CONRAD LUJAN All right CESAR MILLAN So I can see you guys Bye, Rottweiler CONRAD LUJAN Ready, buddy? NARRATOR The next day, the Lujan family returns to the dog psychology center with Kuma CONRAD LUJAN All right, guys CESAR MILLAN Welcome the new ones! NARRATOR For the family to trust Kuma has changed, Cesar must put him through a final series of tests CESAR MILLAN Come on in You guys ready to cheer daddy? I created this little obstacle course for you, brother CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN We're gonna have some distractions CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN Let me explain to you what we're gonna do This is home CONRAD LUJAN My front yard Okay CESAR MILLAN I need you to stay focused no matter what CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN Calmness is key CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN You're going to have Kuma CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN Coming with you You're gonna have him on the leash CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN Put him here All of this is part of it CESAR MILLAN For the final challenge, Conrad needs to guide Kuma through an obstacle course overrun with distractions I want kids, dogs, chaos everywhere CESAR MILLAN So then Kuma's gonna come here, you can ask him to sit down CONRAD LUJAN Okay CESAR MILLAN Then with the leash, you're gonna go around CESAR MILLAN We need to surround Kuma with everything that could have once triggered him to ensure that he can be trusted, and that Conrad can provide the calm confident leadership this dog needs CESAR MILLAN I'm gonna go get the pack All right, Lujan family No touch, no talk, no eye contact Okay? On the new pack BOY All right Got it CESAR MILLAN I'm adding my pack to the environment to see how Kuma responds to humans and dogs in his space If Kuma's territorial behavior has not been refocused, it will be exposed in this final exercise CESAR MILLAN Tsch He's getting too excited Go surround him Block him Block him CONRAD LUJAN Tsch Kuma! CONRAD LUJAN Help Help Corner BOY [inaudible] All right Ready? I got you Hey CONRAD LUJAN Tsch Tsch CESAR MILLAN That's beautiful, but he needs to go all the way CONRAD LUJAN Wait for him to sit, right? CESAR MILLAN You can also push the little bit at the back CONRAD LUJAN Good job, boys CESAR MILLAN Good job That was a pack work CESAR MILLAN I can see the family has taken their homework seriously Now, they're working together to calm Kuma So I feel confident he's ready to be near my pack CESAR MILLAN This is like the equivalent of being at the dog park, but a cool dog park So that allows your dog to focus and disregard what is happening See, look how good my boy is doing Yes! He's ready for the test CESAR MILLAN All right, let's go CESAR MILLAN For Kuma to be trusted in the family home, he needs to demonstrate perfect obedience throughout this final challenge CESAR MILLAN These dogs, they all understand social distance CESAR MILLAN The obstacle course is set up as one hurdle, followed by a resting platform, and so on Conrad must keep Kuma perfectly focused, despite all of the activity and chaos Zero triggers, and we've got a rehabilitated Rottweiler CONRAD LUJAN Come on Up GIRL Hey! CONRAD LUJAN Up! CESAR MILLAN Don't lose your patience CONRAD LUJAN Here you go Come on, boy Sit CESAR MILLAN There you go Epa! CONRAD LUJAN There we go CESAR MILLAN Yes CONRAD LUJAN There you go Good boy Up Sit, sit Tsch Stay BOY Ahsoka! CESAR MILLAN Yes CONRAD LUJAN Good boy Go Go Come on There you go CESAR MILLAN Yeah So what's happening right now is the energy calmed down Now Conrad is in control CONRAD LUJAN Go Up CESAR MILLAN Your energy is your most powerful tool on this planet You understand, my friend? BOY Go, daddy! CONRAD LUJAN Let's go Good boy CESAR MILLAN He's doing good He's doing good CONRAD LUJAN Place Sit, sit Tsch CESAR MILLAN Ha ha! CONRAD LUJAN Tsch Ready? CESAR MILLAN Ready Ready Yay! LILY LUJAN Yeah! CONRAD LUJAN Hey! [inaudible] Kuma! [speaking foreign language] CESAR MILLAN That was gorgeous CONRAD LUJAN You see that? CESAR MILLAN Oh, that was serious, brother CESAR MILLAN When we first started, Kuma was looking at Coana as pack leader, taking his cues from her CESAR MILLAN And now he's completely focused on Conrad and Lily, who have re-established themselves as leaders of this pack CESAR MILLAN Now the surprise for the princess The whole pack is gonna come with us, and my boy is gonna pull the cart CONRAD LUJAN Oh CESAR MILLAN Yes So the cart is the extra challenge Rottweilers are cart dogs They can pull things They were bred for that This is how we reward Let's go! Let's go! CONRAD LUJAN Oh, let's go! Let's go! LILY LUJAN In the beginning, we didn't think it was possible to trust Kuma with the children, but because of this process, we've been able to regain trust in him CONRAD LUJAN And we're still working on that We'll continue to work on it, continue to build that trust LILY LUJAN We're learning and we're growing CONRAD LUJAN I think it was quite, quite successful LILY LUJAN Both of you CONRAD LUJAN I'll give it to Kuma Kuma did a good job LILY LUJAN Good job, Kuma CONRAD LUJAN Look at that Good boy CESAR MILLAN There's no quick fix for a case like this, but seeing the commitment Conrad and Lily have made to stabilize Kuma after that traumatic break-in That tells me this family will conquer any challenge if they do it together CONRAD LUJAN Good job, Kuma ALL Yay, Kuma! ALL Yeah, Kuma! CESAR MILLAN Woohoo! NARRATOR Cesars work with Kuma shows that red zone dogs arent a lost cause NARRATOR Now Cesar must help another family in the midst of an urgent crisis of their own ERIC CALDERON I'm Eric This is my wife, Jennifer JENNIFER CALDERON We're a family of first responders I'm an ER nurse JENNIFER CALDERON My husband is a fireman paramedic And my son is an EMT We have three dogs Bubba is our oldest dog He's eight years old He is a pitty mix Bubba is just an old guy who just wants to live his best life on the couch We also have Angus He's definitely the most spoiled He loves affection the most, so I feel like he does get away with more than he should ERIC CALDERON Yeah JENNIFER CALDERON And then we have Bella ERIC CALDERON Let's go! JENNIFER CALDERON She's also a pit bull Bella is our craziest girl She needs to be in control in every situation She's always on edge, always ready to go ERIC CALDERON Yeah JENNIFER CALDERON Any toy that they have, she wants We just have zero control over Bella It's just a recipe for disaster ERIC CALDERON One of the biggest moments we had when one of our sons was just laughing, it triggered her He got bit pretty bad, where he needed stitches JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah Bella! Bella! JENNIFER CALDERON Bella is dog aggressive So we're having to watch her with the other dogs in the neighborhood ERIC CALDERON You get to that point where they're seeing red Bella, come on! JENNIFER CALDERON And then, so she causes anxiety with the other dogs They get riled up Recently, she all of a sudden, she attacked Bubba He immediately started attacking Bella back and bit her through her shoulder She actually needed surgery and put drains in, and it was a pretty significant injury It didn't stop her though because when we got to the vet, she was trying to attack all the other dogs that were in there I am worried that we're not going to be able to stop it one day And now, I'm trying to wrangle 300 pounds (136 kilograms) worth of dogs You know, they're going to fight until one of them kills each other CESAR MILLAN It's pretty We're going to respond to the responders JENNIFER CALDERON Hey, hey, hey! Stop! Hi CESAR MILLAN How are you? JENNIFER CALDERON Fine Oh, hold on Stop ERIC CALDERON Get back CESAR MILLAN That's pretty bad JENNIFER CALDERON Thanks for coming CESAR MILLAN Absolutely Wow That's a bark right there JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah That's a, that's a strong bark CESAR MILLAN This family called me for Bella, but they've had some brutal dog fights within this pack I can't just take Jennifer and Eric's word that Bella is the problem I have to assess the entire pack CESAR MILLAN If you don't mind, we can go for a walk JENNIFER CALDERON Okay CESAR MILLAN And the best way to do that is to see how they walk as a pack Let's go and experience the energy! ERIC CALDERON Bubba, come here JENNIFER CALDERON Come on ERIC CALDERON Hold Angus JENNIFER CALDERON Hey! Bring it on CESAR MILLAN Oh, man I just want to follow you and just take me through your route ERIC CALDERON Okay JENNIFER CALDERON Do you want to go with us or you want to just give him? ERIC CALDERON Okay CESAR MILLAN Seeing them leave the house, that was pretty dangerous JENNIFER CALDERON Super fun walk CESAR MILLAN Because they're allowing the dog to be in front full throttle, full force, full anxiety, full aggression, full excitement, all of that The humans are actually serving like a deadweight, so they're not guiding CESAR MILLAN Shoulders up Shoulders up CESAR MILLAN They're walking, but they're not in control ERIC CALDERON Good boy CESAR MILLAN The dog should not be in front of you, especially walking in the neighborhood ERIC CALDERON Good boy JENNIFER CALDERON Bella CESAR MILLAN Bella's really pulling hard She's about to pull Jennifer out of her shoes So the first thing we need to do is to get that dog under control CESAR MILLAN Jennifer, bring it over here This is like a halter So at least we're going to eliminate the pulling And then once you eliminate the pulling, you can ask for the following JENNIFER CALDERON Okay CESAR MILLAN Normal That's good That's all good Come with me, Jennifer I'm going to use you so that she can follow you JENNIFER CALDERON Okay CESAR MILLAN And then I'm going to pass it to you once she starts There you go So that way we're at least bringing this speed down, and we can start guiding the car JENNIFER CALDERON Uh-hmm Got it CESAR MILLAN Cause right now you had a car that was all over the place, pulling looking for dogs JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah Makes sense CESAR MILLAN So the dog gets amped Oh Tsch Tsch Tsch It's all good This is the redirection This is when she's doing the redirection CESAR MILLAN When I said redirection, I simply mean redirected aggression When Bella is over-excited by any target, if she can't reach that particular target, she'll redirect that energy to someone or something near her CESAR MILLAN If she can't get to him, she has to redirect that energy CESAR MILLAN She gets really excited and fights the leash hard, right? Have you ever put a halter on her? JENNIFER CALDERON No CESAR MILLAN No, right? No Shes not used to it JENNIFER CALDERON Uh-uh CESAR MILLAN Thats a problem CESAR MILLAN Yeah By using the harness when Jennifer pulls, that makes the dog pull harder That puts Bella into scouting fighting mode Its not intentional, but the harness nurtures the fighting mentality, which is now carrying over into their home CESAR MILLAN Thats sending the wrong signals JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah I definitely think that Bella would attack another dog Any sort of excitement, whether its good or bad, she redirects CESAR MILLAN Once the leash goes on her nose, you see how the brain changes? JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah CESAR MILLAN Drastically JENNIFER CALDERON Uh-hmm CESAR MILLAN So thats why tools are so important to understand Whats the outcome Im going to gain by that tool? That is fighting right now, pulling This is calming and paying attention JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah CESAR MILLAN What I learned is this the family cant even walk their dogs because of how excited they all get in the neighborhood No walks means no exercise And no exercise for this pack means youve got pent-up, aggressive, dangerous energy These three are just raw power mixed with aggression, but its the pent-up energy that really makes them super dangerous right now So I need to get them off the street and into a place where they can begin to burn off that energy and see what kind of dogs they are underneath NARRATOR Later that day, the Calderon family makes their way to the dog psychology center JENNIFER CALDERON So thankful for this opportunity to help the dogs ERIC CALDERON Yeah JENNIFER CALDERON I just felt like, Oh man, this is like a ticking time bomb CESAR MILLAN Because these dogs are so powerful and potentially volatile, anything that could trigger these dogs are locked up safely This is a first here at the DPC, and were not taking any chances ERIC CALDERON Bubba Come here, Bubba CESAR MILLAN Get this guy over here Thats excitement we dont want This is a little too excited as well CESAR MILLAN Whos the biggest problem? We still dont know Weve seen some over-excitement especially with Bellas redirection The only way we can get a full picture is after we give these dogs the best workout of their lives NARRATOR Cesars first exercise will accomplish two things Drain the dogs dangerous energy, and serve as an example of how to workout the pack without redirection or biting CESAR MILLAN So what were going to do right now, were going to have some harnesses And here weve got these big tires What were saying is This is where you pull You dont pull the human JENNIFER CALDERON Oh Got it Uh-hmm CESAR MILLAN Okay Lets get Bubba first Hes smart, and hell show them how its done CESAR MILLAN These dogs never exercise, and they are known to attack each other, so I am going to start slow and introduce the motion to one dog at a time to prevent an attack CESAR MILLAN We have to really understand how to harness the power, how to manage the power ERIC CALDERON There we go Okay CESAR MILLAN Good boy Good boy Good boy Come on Good boy ERIC CALDERON Yeah JENNIFER CALDERON Doing good, yeah CESAR MILLAN There you go There you go There you go Look at homeboy Look at homeboy Yeah You can let him go Let him go ERIC CALDERON Okay Yeah, yea CESAR MILLAN Thats the encouragement right there You see it? No redirections, no lunges, no problems Good boy, Bubba Good boy Okay, now bring in Bella Lets lower that excitement ERIC CALDERON Nope Bella CESAR MILLAN Bella must prove here and now that shes capable of committing to this exercise without redirecting again ERIC CALDERON Come on, Bella JENNIFER CALDERON I know Im nervous right now, seems like super anxious CESAR MILLAN But if we cant get her to even start the exercise, shes going to remain a threat to this family DAKOTA Uh-oh CESAR MILLAN Come on, Bella! ERIC CALDERON Nope ERIC CALDERON Come on, Bella Come on JENNIFER CALDERON Oh, look at her go! Look at her ERIC CALDERON Come on, Bella Come on Good job CESAR MILLAN Bella is doing fine on her own, but thats not good enough What this family needs is for their dogs to be able to burn off energy by exercising like this together ERIC CALDERON Good girl Come on Come on Yeah CESAR MILLAN Shes getting it! Lets bring them together We need to keep a close eye on Bella to make sure that excitement doesnt go too high, and she doesnt go after her pack There you go Come on ERIC CALDERON Bella CESAR MILLAN This is all good ERIC CALDERON Yeah It is JENNIFER CALDERON Oh my gosh This was huge for us I mean, I cant believe theyre doing so well They arent fighting Theyre all three together ERIC CALDERON That hasnt happened in, its been years CESAR MILLAN Yes, sir! Yes, sir! Look at that Ha-ha! Oh, thats synchronicity Yes, sir JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah DAKOTA Come on CESAR MILLAN Ha-ha! Look at this! Look at this! Drain the energy soon as they wake up Thats your main job JENNIFER CALDERON Uh-hmm CESAR MILLAN So now, in this state, were gonna go for a walk Okay? JENNIFER CALDERON Okay CESAR MILLAN Follow me NARRATOR Cesar wants to test the dogs with an introduction to his own pack Using a barrier, they first meet the friendliest dog on the ranch CESAR MILLAN Thats Sophia We rescued her from Puerto Rico Angus first Hes just a big puppy See? Gentle Now lets get the old guy, Bubba See the tail? He didnt want to hurt her So thats the good news You know? Honestly, these two dogs are not fighters So now I want to see how Bella handles meeting Sophia JENNIFER CALDERON Is she growling? She is growling Its not good CESAR MILLAN She pulled you to it Sit her down Sit her down Shes about to jump on Sophia Okay Hold on If they get tense, its because youre still tense ERIC CALDERON Uh-hmm CESAR MILLAN The dog is telling you what the energy is Your mind might be thinking one thing, but your energy is completely different ERIC CALDERON Uh-hmm Okay CESAR MILLAN Tsch So, here Remember, she brought you to Sophia Now we got to bring her to the fence because she pulled you to it ERIC CALDERON Uh-hmm CESAR MILLAN So Im bringing her to it ERIC CALDERON On our terms CESAR MILLAN After everything we've done to burn the energy and bringing down the excitement, Bella's the only one to become overly excited So that's her problem She's over-excited, constantly Look at the tail The danger here is that the longer an over-excited dog remains in that elevated state, the more likely she might direct that energy onto someone close to her That could be another dog, or even a person CESAR MILLAN This is not a red-zone pack This is a pack with a red-zone dog With regular exercise and discipline, Bubba and Angus will find balance But it's Bella who wants to fight every dog she meets For now, I want to send this family home with clear directions drain their energy first Practice making Bella sit whenever she gets triggered We have a lot of work to do NARRATOR The Calderons head home equipped with new techniques to keep Bella under control NARRATOR but a few days later, Cesar receives an emergency call from Jennifer CESAR MILLAN Tell me Talk to me JENNIFER CALDERON I opened the front door JENNIFER CALDERON Across the street, then a lady and her dogs started walking And that caught Bellas eye JENNIFER CALDERON And she just bolted past me Bella! Bella! JENNIFER CALDERON And I was like [bleep] I ran after her JENNIFER CALDERON I'm yelling at her, "Bella! Bella!" JENNIFER CALDERON Bella ran out She runs up to the dogs fast CESAR MILLAN Right JENNIFER CALDERON Barking JENNIFER CALDERON But then the little one off-leash comes at her barking and kind of lunges at her JENNIFER CALDERON And then that's when she retaliated No, no, no! JENNIFER CALDERON I don't think anything happened JENNIFER CALDERON The dog didn't yelp or anything CESAR MILLAN Good JENNIFER CALDERON I felt bad I felt like it was my fault CESAR MILLAN Yep I understand Listen, I'm with you But the mistake is, unfortunately, it's where we grow The good thing is nobody's hurt JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah CESAR MILLAN It's just a little bit of moment of scare, but that's the thing JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah CESAR MILLAN When we have big dogs, whatever they do, it just magnifies, it intensifies JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah CESAR MILLAN We're gonna work on this JENNIFER CALDERON Uh-huh Thank you Bye NARRATOR Bella's dog aggression has escalated to a critical level Cesar needs to address this incident with Bella immediately before her next attack could result in a fatality Cesar arrives in Rancho Cucamonga to teach Jennifer how to control Bella's aggression when faced with outside distractions JENNIFER CALDERON Thank you so much for coming I think part of me being so emotional was because I came to a realization at that moment Like, "Oh, my gosh, is Bella too much for us? What if someone comes and takes my dogs?" Because if Bella were to get out and were to bite a dog, I just don't want anybody to get hurt or anything like that CESAR MILLAN You were not prepared for this, so I'm glad it happened because that means to me that this is where we have to work JENNIFER CALDERON Right CESAR MILLAN You're gonna love today So what we're gonna do is, we're gonna put a leash on Bella, the halter, set her up, snap her out of it, let her know what we want And that's gonna be their new memory JENNIFER CALDERON Okay Okay All right Ill go get her NARRATOR After Cesar's encouragement, Jennifer is prepared to discourage Bella's "fight mode" mindset CESAR MILLAN Relax Breathe Stop right there NARRATOR But to ensure Jennifer's success, Cesar must retrain the dog by presenting a new trigger CESAR MILLAN Be right back NARRATOR One with which she's never had a bad experience CESAR MILLAN Now you're gonna meet ducks We're gonna start with them on the bag Bella has only ever fought dogs, so it is actually safer for us to use these ducks because they're completely new to her, and she doesn't have a bad memory of them like she does with unfamiliar dogs Don't worry, I'll never let anything happen to my ducks Relax She needs to get used to the sound, the smell, the sight This is all good This is nothing wrong She's doing great Sit her down Uh-hmm JENNIFER CALDERON She's doing great CESAR MILLAN You're doing great JENNIFER CALDERON Oh, thanks CESAR MILLAN Yeah, yeah, yeah It's a reflection of you Now I'm going to let them walk back by there All right? JENNIFER CALDERON Okay CESAR MILLAN So far, she's not triggering with the fight, but we're just getting started here Bring her over Bring her over Tsch See that? That's a fight mode CESAR MILLAN Yes JENNIFER CALDERON There you go CESAR MILLAN You fixed that one Good? JENNIFER CALDERON Yes Great CESAR MILLAN Yeah She's getting excited, but this was easy to snap out of it and say, "Oh, that's what you want? Okay, that's what I do" Come this way We're gonna take the ducks for a walk NARRATOR Cesar will control Bella until he feels it's safe for Jennifer to take the leash CESAR MILLAN I also want you to see when the surrender kicks in There you go That's surrender That's beautiful right there Here is the leash to you CESAR MILLAN There's a very subtle moment when a dog finally surrenders When you see Bella stop looking around excitedly, when she finally just settles into the walk and relaxes I'm not saying she's fixed, but it's a huge deal that Bella let go of her over-excitement and finally surrendered CESAR MILLAN Shoulders up Yes Nice Shoulders up Yes Tsch Tsch Hey! Watch out We got a little one right here Tsch Tsch Hey CESAR MILLAN The off-leash dog almost flipped Bella back into fight mode But this is where we teach Jennifer how to stay calm and handle these scenarios CESAR MILLAN So if you see a little dog moving, sit down You stop JENNIFER CALDERON Okay CESAR MILLAN When we see an off-leash dog We stay calm We surrender We stop They sit, just like Bella and Jennifer here JENNIFER CALDERON She forgot about the ducks She doesn't care anymore CESAR MILLAN They're, they're in the back Look, look, they're running Look at them Those are the best ducks in the world, man How's it feel? JENNIFER CALDERON It feels amazing! CESAR MILLAN I know Jennifer has been worried about Bella attacking again and thinking maybe the city would take her away, but I'm sure they're both gonna get it right We still have important work left, but we made a lot of progress today Surprise, ducks can cure pit bulls NARRATOR After nearly a month of intense rehabilitation, Cesar returns to the Calderone family home to put this pack to one final challenge JENNIFER CALDERON Hi, Cesar CESAR MILLAN Hi, guys How are you? Good morning I have a surprise for your final challenge CESAR MILLAN The last time I came here to work with Bella, it was because she escaped out of the front door to attack another dog I need to know that we have worked through her dog aggression To put Bella and Jennifer to a final test, I'm going to have my son, Andre, walk a dog by their front door to see if Jennifer can keep Bella in a calm surrender state CESAR MILLAN All right, Andre Tsch! CESAR MILLAN I could see Bella switching into attack mode Her body was getting tense, her eyes were fixated on the husky I just need to do a proper correction to remind Jennifer how to keep Bella calm JENNIFER CALDERON Tsch CESAR MILLAN There you go This is more calm surrender JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah CESAR MILLAN Andre, do it again JENNIFER CALDERON Tsch CESAR MILLAN There you go That's the one So whatever you did, and whatever that intensity That's the intensity, so you don't have to do it like three times JENNIFER CALDERON This is huge for her 'cause she normally would have been CESAR MILLAN Uh-hmm Oh, yeah, yeah And this is her true nature, her happy-go-lucky self that we all love There you go This is more calm surrender Bella and Jennifer are doing great so far So now, I'm going to push their limits a little and see how they react when confronted with another dog Andre! ANDRE MILLAN Yes, sir CESAR MILLAN I have my son Andre move in slowly with the other dog to prevent Bella from feeling threatened I want to see how Bella chooses to react to a dog entering her space calmly JENNIFER CALDERON Tsch Tsch CESAR MILLAN So now we have two calm surrender Can you see it? JENNIFER CALDERON & ERIC CALDERON Uh-hmm CESAR MILLAN So that's why it's so important to assess and evaluate how they feel Not what they did What they're doing right now ERIC CALDERON Yeah JENNIFER CALDERON Right CESAR MILLAN Yawning is good A yawn equals relaxation, it means calm, surrender Bella has a troubled past, but you can see that that's not going to define her future JENNIFER CALDERON When I do walk her, I usually put the weighted vest and her goggles on just to help decrease CESAR MILLAN I want to see the whole thing JENNIFER CALDERON Okay CESAR MILLAN I'm so proud of all the work Jennifer has put in She's even using tools like a weighted vest to burn energy She looks, oh, my, they have pink? JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah CESAR MILLAN Oh, my lord I love it even more JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah When we put it on her, she's much calmer CESAR MILLAN And goggles that work like blinders on a horse Together, it's all about controlling Bella's excitement JENNIFER CALDERON We're ready NARRATOR Bellas shown great success at remaining calm when faced with old triggers Cesar takes her for a final walk around the neighborhood to celebrate her progress CESAR MILLAN Yeah When I first met Jennifer, she was getting dragged down the streets by a dog ready to fight anyone that stepped in their path These dogs never got exercise because it wasn't safe to walk them So now I want to see how Jennifer handles a walk with all the tools and knowledge she's gained throughout Bella's rehabilitation CESAR MILLAN Don't forget distance also Also look, come this way Distance is respect JENNIFER CALDERON We were so concerned that we would have to find Bella a new place to live And then, working with Cesar, learning all the tools, and see that she's happy-go-lucky, and she's not really responding as much to other dogs, it made me feel better I'm giving her a second chance It's all thanks to Cesar CESAR MILLAN Much better, right? JENNIFER CALDERON Yeah This feels great CESAR MILLAN Yeah This is it ERIC CALDERON Cesar, I just want to thank you and there's nothing I could say that would repay what you've done for our family CESAR MILLAN It was awesome to be a first-responder for once ERIC CALDERON Sounds pretty awesome JENNIFER CALDERON Well, you definitely were CESAR MILLAN Appreciate you very much You did amazing Bella, Jennifer, and Eric have come so far There's still a lot of work to do, but I know they will improve every day CESAR MILLAN New dog owners, remember this take your dog for a long walk every day Walk your pack with calm, confident, love and joy, and be a part of something bigger than yourself You can accomplish anything if you do it together
