Its a little bit of everything. Everybody has a little bit of truth in this story. But theres also a little bit of lie. So, you have to find your way through the truth and the lie. CORINNA He said he wanted to marry me as soon as he could, but that he was working on it. ANA PARDO DE VERA He was crazy about her. He wanted to marry her. Corinna almost became the Queen of Spain. A State operation was activated to stop the relationship. ANCHORWOMAN SPAIN Spain's secret service raided her office in Monaco and even stole several of her documents. CORINNA How did I get out of this was quite an operation. PILOT Wed like to cancel our previous clearance to Madrid and get a new clearance to London City. CORINNA So, I left everyone behind, at the last hour. And nobody could do anything about it. CORINNA Here's box number one. It's one of eight black boxes. Anything that pertained to King Juan Carlos, I was asked to put in black boxes. CORINNA Okay. So this whole box looks like pretty much a lot of personal letters. You have to know that the king used to write to me almost on a daily basis. And so there are hundreds of letters, personal letters, notes, messages that came with flowers. CORINNA He sent them from everywhere, also to my children. For example, there is one here its quite cute, actually, it says Alexander. This is pocket money from King. With all my love. My son Alexander, he thought his name was King because the king wrote a lot of postcards and notes to him and always signed just King because it was their own little joke. CORINNA Yeah, there's Alexander on Air Force One. The king used to take him to fly with him on Air Force One. CORINNA Oh, wow. And Alexander was two and a half when they met. They had this wonderful relationship. Here he is dressing him. CORINNA Here we have a letter from the royal household. They would write to me quite frequently. There are a number of documents in those boxes that pertain to highly confidential political matters or foreign policy matters in Spain. Anything that was very, you know, current, from Middle East politics to Russia to terrorism. CORINNA If we took the content of these eight boxes, I could probably document pretty much every day or every week from the beginning of this relationship to the end. JOSE MARIA OLMO King Juan Carlos, although officially still married to Queen Sofa, did not have a relationship with Sofa since JOSE MARIA OLMO King Felipe VI was five years old. JAIME PENAFIEL Don Juan Carlos wasn't loyal or faithful. He didn't behave in a fitting manner. Corinna and Juan Carlos destroyed the Spanish royal family. CORINNA The king acted very much like a father to Alexander. It's very important that when you're with someone and it's a serious relationship, that your children form part of that. CORINNA I think ones childhood is so important in terms of forming a person for the rest of their lives. CORINNA My earliest memories of my childhood were about travelling because we lived between Frankfurt and Rio de Janeiro. Back in the days, you would fly in very early in the morning and see the Corcovado and the Christ sort of being so magnificent, and you would see him in the clouds. CORINNA I was convinced that God lived in Rio de Janeiro. CORINNA My childhood is something I remember actually very distinctly. I really have the fondest memory of my childhood. CORINNA My mother is German. She was an absolutely stunningly beautiful lady and still is at 83 today. And she really taught me one part of my life that's very important. The German discipline, a sense of order of organization. But at the same time, she had this incredible sense of aesthetics. And I watch her preparing the house for the many guests we received multiple times a week. CORINNA We had people from all religions at home. People with different political opinions. People from different countries. Heads of state. CORINNA My father was a sort of larger-than- life character, and I found him to be so empowering to a little girl. He treated me not just like his little princess and always told me how pretty I was. So he always made me feel confident in my own skin. But at the same time he said to me, Don't be afraid of anything and never be afraid of anyone. CORINNA The outlook on life was so open and these forming years of my life made me who I am. CORINNA Heres some really wonderful pictures in Barcelona. I think it was May 2006. And you can just see what a wonderful warm relationship they have and how they are in a world of their own. It was a little bit awkward because Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia were there and the scene of hugging just went on and on and on and on. And they started looking at this and looking maybe a little bit disconcerted. CORINNA Whilst I was initially reticent and a little bit cautious over time, that disappeared. Because it was so clear that we had a very serious relationship and I was very much in love with him, too. So this was a mutually, very deep and meaningful relationship. CORINNA The king had spoken to me about his desire to make me and my children part of his will. Especially Alexander, but also me. Juan Carlos gifted to me a large sum of money. I thought it was extremely generous. CORINNA But he was very concerned that his family wouldn't respect his wishes. He said, they'll just rip my last will apart. He understood that with his very dysfunctional family, I would never be taken care of, if he left it up to them. JAIME PENAFIEL Juan Carlos asked Corinna's father for her hand JAIME PENAFIEL in the old style of a Spanish gent. He asked him for her daughter's hand in marriage. CORINNA The king travelled to Berlin to see my father alone, to assure him that he was very serious about me. CORINNA In January of 2008, he proposed with a beautiful engagement ring. CORINNA I had no idea he'd gone to talk to his children. And I can quite imagine how alarm lights in the palace and the government and everywhere else started ringing. ANA ROMERO At that moment, the people in charge regarded her as the biggest focus of instability. They were terrified about the power that she had over him. JAIME PENAFIEL Juan Carlos wanted a divorce so he could marry Corinna. He even gathered his children together for a dinner to announce that he planned to get married. His son said, "You'll have to abdicate!" CORINNA I said yes, but I didn't really expect a king of a Catholic country to divorce. But by that time, my father had somehow developed a suspicion. CORINNA He said he was very sorry, but he felt it was his duty to tell me before he passed away that he thought I would be betrayed in ways that I could never imagine. CORINNA I was very shocked to find at some point in September that he had had a relationship ongoing for three years with another woman. CORINNA And we had a massive argument. I was just pretty outraged. And then very shortly after we actually had this conversation, he told me he'd been diagnosed with a lung tumour. CORINNA And I didn't want to abandon him in a moment of real need. He said, I need someone I trust and care about to stand by me. And of course, I was there. But in a different capacity. CORINNA So for me to kind of end the relationship or turn it into a friendship wasn't easy. I was aware that that would be walking a tightrope. JOSE MARIA OLMO Corinna shared her life with the king for many years. Then they broke up. King Juan Carlos did not take it well. He didn't want the relationship to end. The problem is that Corinna knew everything. Not just about the king. She knew about the monarchy and the financial elite. JOSE MARIA OLMO Everything blew up in around 2012. Corinna posed a danger to the Spanish State. JOSE MARIA OLMO That was one of the main reasons why, in 2012, the CNI set up an operation to take away all the sensitive or compromising info she had in Monaco. CORINNA I was informed by my team in Monaco that security guards had arrived and literally occupied our apartment and the office. CORINNA So I arrived at home in Monaco. CORINNA I had no idea who these people were. What was their mission? They were there to kill me? JOSE MANUEL VILLAREJO What I know from friends I still have at the CNI ... In the case of Monaco, they pretended to carry out a security check to prevent journalists from gaining access. JOSE MANUEL VILLAREJO It was even said they were former members of the French Foreign Legion. The worst of the worst. CORINNA I was receiving almost daily phone calls and emails from General Sanz Roldn, the head of the Secret Service under the email address Paul Bon. CORINNA I knew these messages were coming from him and from the king who were telling me these measures were taken for the security, for protection. CORINNA It was explained to me that I had to put together personal documents, letters, photographs. CORINNA Of course I obliged. I was even provided with huge black boxes. CORINNA And this whole situation was explained to me by the king and by General Sanz Roldn as an operation to protect me from the paparazzi in Monaco. But there are no paparazzi allowed into buildings in Monaco. My building had high-level security and it was next to the police station. CORINNA I was also told by the king that this mission happened with the permission of Prince Albert, but I never believed that to be true. CORINNA I met Prince Albert when I was about 17 years old. My parents would take us on holidays to the south of France and often to Monte Carlo. Every year there's this very big event called the Red Cross Ball. CORINNA And we were a whole group of young people attending the Red Cross Ball together with Prince Albert and Princess Stephanie at the time. CORINNA That was when I was very young in my pink dress my father bought for me in Paris for the big occasion. And it was a beautiful evening. CORINNA And it was the beginning of a friendship that over the years just became closer. So this is really a friendship that lasted for nearly 40 years. CORINNA So in order to clarify, I decided to send Prince Albert a letter, given how far back we go and how many moments we spent together. So I thought I'd just explain what was happening and ask him if I was still safe in Monaco. CORINNA And I received no response. And no response is a response. It means you are not safe and you are not welcome. CORINNA And that is when I became incredibly scared. CORINNA The moment you're dealing with the head of a foreign intelligence service who is a general with a very misogynist attitude and sort of very, very tough, that already is scary in itself. JAVIER AYUSO Felix Sanz Roldn was the head of the CNI, the National Intelligence Center, the center of Spain's secret service. He was his right-hand man for many years. ANA ROMERO The head of the Secret Service was the king's buddy, and he protected him completely. These two men came out of age under Franco. And that stays with you. ANA ROMERO Because Juan Carlos I historically had also a very interesting relationship with Franco's Secret Service who was spying on him. Franco had spies everywhere. They told him everything. Who did what, when did Juan Carlos leave the palace So very early on, he learned, if I have the Secret Service with me, I have the power. They will take care of me. JAVIER BLEDA They had the ability to help the king in the most extreme circumstances. JAVIER BLEDA This was supposedly the case of Sandra Mozarowsky. Rumors were flying about. One day ... the girl got pregnant JAVIER BLEDA Supposedly, by Juan Carlos I. We shouldn't forget that she was a minor. The easiest solution was for her to have an abortion. Initially, she agreed. Until she began feeling the baby inside. She was five months pregnant when she died. JAVIER BLEDA It was thought she may have fallen off her balcony while watering. But there was also talk about her being thrown off. JAVIER BLEDA The strange thing is that her autopsy vanished. There was something about her death that didn't add up. CORINNA So this whole situation was extremely scary for me. To my great surprise, I found a book on my coffee table about the death of Princess Diana and the involvement of the Secret Service in her death. CORINNA And I got a phone call in Spanish, saying there are many tunnels between Monaco and Nice. CORINNA This was beginning to become more and more scary. So you are wondering. Can the king just order the head of the Secret Service to spy on his ex- girlfriend? CORINNA And whenever I asked, the General Sanz Roldn what was really going on, he would say he couldn't disclose the exact nature of the mission because it was sort of secret. CORINNA Whenever I called the king to question what was going on, he would feign surprise at some of the complaints I was making about what was going on in my apartment. He assured me this was all for my safety. This was all for my benefit. CORINNA And I thought maybe the general had overstepped his instructions. But the general was always very clear to say that these were the instructions that he received. So, yes, who to believe? JOSE MARIA OLMO For many years, the Intelligence Service acted as a personal guard for King Juan Carlos. JOSE MARIA OLMO Firstly, they regarded King Juan Carlos as a cornerstone of our constitutional system and that if anything happened to him, JOSE MARIA OLMO Spain could be destabilized. Nobody wanted to relive the fears of the past because we still had a young democracy. The fears of the past helped to turn the king into a myth. MARIO CONDE As a king, he provided stability during difficult times. MARIO CONDE The society looked at Juan Carlos not as the head of this or that political party, but as a figure that that society needed to feel at peace. JOSE MARIA OLMO The problem was that over time the need to protect Juan Carlos from all kinds of threats ended up in a kind of personal security body in other areas as well that had nothing to do with public engagements, but with his private life. JOSE MARIA OLMO Corinna was not his first mistress. He had many. And in the past, all the cases had been solved with money. Money or threats. ANA ROMERO Brbara Rey was a sort of "It" girl. ANA ROMERO She was one of Tv's most striking celebrities. And men at that time were completely unaccustomed to seeing a scantily clad woman on TV. They went out of their minds. And of course, that included King Juan Carlos. TV HOST Do you like the word "lover"? BARBARA REY I love it. TV HOSTWere you always with someone out of love? BARBARA REY Yes. ANA ROMERO The king broke up with her and she realized she was left with nothing. And she tried to maximize what she had. JAVIER BLEDA She bought recording devices with cameras and mics. She set it up in her house JAVIER BLEDA and went there with the king. That's where the famous video was recorded. ANGEL MORENO The tapes really do exist. There are tapes of the amorous encounters between Brbara Rey and the king. ANGEL MORENO Everything that can be seen on them are images that a head of state would not ... TV HOST And the tape that compromises important people? BARBARA REY Do you think there's only one compromising tape? ANGEL MORENO I don't know with whom, but she was negotiating a payment to keep her quiet. In Spain there were rumors that it was Mario Conde, a famous banker then. MARIO CONDE My lawyer called and said I needed to talk with Brbara Rey. Me talk with Brbara Rey? I had no idea she'd had a relationship with the king. She told me some things I didn't like at all. And the king realized he was in trouble. No idea how they settled it. I never asked, we never talked about it. We never talked about it. NEWS SPAIN On 25th May, Brbara Rey reported to the police that her home had been burgled. The thieves forced open the safe and took videotapes. Apparently, all this material compromised a VIP with whom she had a personal relationship. And whose name she did not wish to reveal. BARBARA REY I've received death threats. They might kill me, but of course I plan to go all the way and people will find out who killed me. You have no idea, and this is for all Spaniards, in whose hands we are. JOSE MARIA OLMO The secret service cni tried to handle this issue like it had before. However, Corinna was not willing to accept a threat, she was someone who could defend herself. JOSE MARIA OLMO She was unwilling to accept orders from a foreign intelligence service. JOSE MANUEL VILLAREJO Why did Sanz Roldn get nervous? He began sending her messages saying that for her own sake JOSE MANUEL VILLAREJO she should collaborate, etc. He simply thought that he was dealing with one of the usual lovers that Juan Carlos had: actresses, models, girls ... No. This is a top-class businesswoman, educated, German, and of a very high intellect. In the world of intelligence there is nothing worse than underestimating the enemy. CORINNA How did I get out of this? It was quite an operation. We were driving to Nice airport. CORINNA My mind was racing because I thought at some point, maybe on the way, these boxes would just disappear and, you know. I might end up somewhere on the roadside. JOSE MANUEL VILLAREJO I remember a lunch with CNI people. We burst out laughing, it was hilarious how they'd been fooled. She told them that since they had so much luggage, instead of taking a regular flight they could use her own private jet. CORINNA It is normal procedure at Nice private aviation terminal, that your luggage gets loaded first. Only once that is completed do the passengers go through security. JOSE MANUEL VILLAREJO They had to show their passports, so in the meantime she took off without them. CORINNA I decided I was just going to take this flight alone. PILOT We have a change! We'd like to cancel our previous clearance to Madrid. Lima. Mike. Delta. And get a new clearance to: Eco. Golf. Lima. Charlie. London City. CORINNA So I left everyone behind at the last hour. And nobody could do anything about it. CORINNA And my lawyers had our own security guards on arrival. It was late in the evening. We drove to the hotel and the security guards slept in a room next to me, with connecting doors, with these boxes until we took them to the secure venue the next day. CORINNA I did believe in what I was told, that I had to hide any information or photographs, personal documents pertaining to my relationship with Juan Carlos had to be kept in a safe place. CORINNA They were dropped at the Silver Vaults. I would describe it as a Churchillian bunker. CORINNA I think it withstood wars. It's the most secure site I could ever think of. CORINNA And I was very serious about really making sure that these documents would never fall into the wrong hands. CORINNA In my hotel, where I normally stayed, I received a phone call from King Juan Carlos. I was told that General Sanz Roldn needed to see me. And that he was coming to London to talk to me. The general arrived in London. I was hoping this meeting would take place in a public space, like in a meeting room of the hotel. But he insisted that it had to take place in my bedroom. I thought it was highly inappropriate and also quite scary. To have someone who clearly unleashed significant hell on me and, you know, all my team for weeks prior would then come to your bedroom to talk to you. JOSE MARIA IRUJO She talks about threats. What we are certain about, what is confirmed, is that the former head of the CNI, General Felix Sanz Roldn, went to visit her at the Connaught Hotel in London. And there, according to General Roldn himself, he told her to be as discreet as possible, JOSE MARIA IRUJO that the future of 45 million Spaniards was her responsibility. Supposedly, that was the generals mission at this meeting. CORINNA It was just the two of us, and it was not a big suite. And in that meeting, he told me that he could not guarantee my physical safety or the physical safety of my children, unless I complied with his instructions. CORINNA And these instructions were quite strange. The first one made sense, not to talk to the media, not to defend myself against any of the false allegations that had been put out there. So basically, I was silenced. CORINNA The second instruction was to keep the king motivated to stay in his job. ANA ROMERO The last two years between Botswana and his abdication were a complete nightmare for him, for the household, for the government, for us, for everybody. ANA ROMERO It was a roller coaster. I remember we went to India trying to portray, you know, the ambassador, the energetic man selling the Spanish companies in India. And I could just see it was not going to work. MARIO CONDE The Crown ... is a heavy load to bear. MARIO CONDE During those years, I believe Don Juan Carlos was alone. MARIO CONDE And he sacrificed a lot of his feelings for the Crowns stability. JAVIER AYUSO During those years, King Juan Carlos was plagued by doubts. JAVIER AYUSO He mulled over what was the best for the monarchy and for Spain. JUAN CARLOS Today I would like to thank you all for your commitment and hard work. The reforms undertaken and the work carried out with our partners and allies. I am especially grateful ... ANA ROMERO He was making mistakes and he was stumbling. And I was like, This is not happening. This is not happening. It was happening. He could not read his speech. JUAN CARLOS ... who have sacrificed their own lives and ... suffered and in the place where they have been stationed. JAVIER AYUSO The day before was Juan Carlos' birthday, 5th January. He had slept very little. He arrived and he almost couldn't finish the speech. CORINNA I saw him the day before in perfect shape, making perfect sense on his birthday where he'd asked me to host a small birthday lunch for him in London. Not much alcohol was consumed. We knew he had to travel back and had this big day the next day. He took off on time at four in the afternoon. He called me on arrival to thank me for the lovely lunch and to tell me he was retiring to bed early because he had a big day ahead of him. It was incomprehensible to me to see the next day in what condition he was. He looked drugged. He looked like he had mixed, I don't know, sleeping pills and alcohol. I mean, he was literally slurring his speech. JUAN CARLOS This is the great value of the family. Yours and mine. Our society ... our society will always respond ... CORINNA It was not normal. That was certainly not the person I had spoken to the day before. JUAN CARLOS Long live Spain! ANA ROMERO A couple of days later, after that embarrassing, terrible moment, his daughter, infanta Cristina, was declared she was going to be investigated. ANA ROMERO That was another nail in the coffin. NEWS UK Prosecutors allege her husband, a former Olympic handball player, embezzled 6 million Euros of public funds through a charitable organization. But now his wife has been dragged into the scandal, named as an official suspect after a company she co-owned with her husband was alleged to have been used to launder money. JOSE CASTRO That was the first corruption case I handled within the Royal Household. JOSE CASTRO Because two of the people involved were a princess and her husband. They profited from their family relationship with the king. JOSE CASTRO If it had been possible to prosecute the king, I'd have investigated him. But that's unrealistic. JOSE CASTRO So, you investigate what you can. And that was princess Cristina. PROTESTORS Cristina's missing! We're not all here! Cristina's missing! We're not all here! SPAIN NEWS The year 2013 did not start any better for the royals. The emails implicate Corinna in the Nos case. The aristocrat admits being in contact with Iaki Urdangarin. ANA ROMERO She was being dragged into the case. And in those emails, it looked like she was having shady dealings with Iaki Urdangarn. CORINNA I suddenly realized that I would be implicated in a criminal proceeding. I guess the clear objective was to exonerate King Juan Carlos and the Infanta Cristina and to convince Judge Castro that they had no involvement. CORINNA So I was now really fearful that the royal household were working on a plot to falsely incriminate me in order to save their daughter. I asked King Juan Carlos: but how could you do this to me? And he said, Because blood is thicker. CORINNA It was the big turning point in my friendship with Juan Carlos. It is when I no longer trust them at all. JUAN CARLOS Fortunately, we live with rule of law and any reprehensible act must be judged and punished in accordance with the law. Justice is the same for everyone. JOSE CASTRO The king saying that we are all equal when he is the prime example of not being equal. Well, the truth is ... that bothered me. ANCHORWOMAN SPAIN The latest information about Juan Carlos I's finances. ANCHORWOMAN SPAIN Another chapter in the supposed fortune of the former king. ANA PARDO DE VERA Forbes magazine puts it at around $2 billion. JAIME PENAFIEL He even has a bill counting machine. ANDREW ROSENTHAL He was worth 1.8 billion dollars. Which raises the musical question: where does that money come from? ANA ROMERO When I interviewed Corinna in February 2013, she forgot to tell me one small detail. She had 65 million euros in her bank account. ANA ROMERO This is a story in which all the actors have an agenda. One agenda is worse than the next!
