AMANDA It is exciting! Fantastic! Here it is for the first time, there we go NIGEL Thai AirAsia X bought in a A today NIGEL Its great Got the airport fire-ees get the water across to give the lovely water cannon salute Thats a special thing We normally only ever see it for retiring pilots or when new airlines come to the airport So not everyone gets it Its a good event for the whole airport everyone loves to see that sort of stuff AMANDA Perfect! DYLAN there it goes, have a look at that! MICHELE Perfect! Thats a beautiful thing to see Makes me feel really good NIGEL Look its great to have another airline Its just great to have that extra buzz going on the airfield now More airlines, more people, it's more work for us here at the airport too Which is fantastic! GRAHAM The Screeners here at the Screening Point, they are actually trying to find items that arent allowed into the sterile area, whether that be a weapon or prohibited item SADIA Thank you GRAHAM Anything that could potentially cause harm on board an aircraft KHUBAIB I just need you to open the bag for me And the shoes, come around here GRAHAM The bags are screened by a CT machine, and the individual as they go through, they are either screened by a walk through metal detector or a body scanner It is this team's job to detect anything that could cause harm SADIA Stand here for me please MALE Scan please GRAHAM We are doing some system testing at our security screening point It is an activity that we undertake very frequently to make sure that the competency of our screeners is out of It is probably one of the most important tests we do at the airport GRAHAM We hide a test piece on a person as they go through the walk through metal detector, or the body scanner, it will alarm, and then that screener is set to identify the test piece before they can clear the person to go through the sterile area It is incredibly high stakes GRAHAM We then focus our system testing activity at that individual to make sure that their competency remains high TEST CONTROLLER We are doing body scan testing for the screeners ability to detect any concealed items that may be coming through the body scanner walk through TEST CONTROLLER There she is, that is my test officer in the body scanner at the moment Rock and Roll We are using a metallic test piece located on her hip, concealed on the inside of the pants TEST CONTROLLER That image has now alarmed on her left hip She is now being asked if she consents to a frisk in public So it looks like that screener is investigating a bit more thoroughly around the pants line She is now getting the handheld wand to confirm whether there is anything metallic concealed She may be asking her to go to a private room to be searched more extensively Once a passenger is asked to go into a private room there needs to be a second screener to assist My test officer is being taken to the private room TEST CONTROLLER Im from security, this is an audit and this is my testing officer SECURITY OFFICER oh right TEST CONTROLLER So what have we found? SECURITY OFFICER They lady says they found something around here, and I asked her can you take it off? She said cannot here because we have to inspect visually TEST CONTROLLER Fantastic, so that is a pass from me, very well done, really good procedure, by coming in here, getting somebody to accompany you GRAHAM It is vitally important to ensure that the team when they are working, they are picking up everything that goes through That their skills are first rate Making sure that that workforce is competent to do what they are set out to do LINDY If you wanna go down and wait at that body scanner down there for me LINDY I will get ANNIE in the zone of control ANNIE walk through sir ANNIE IV This is a new thing for me Im so excited ANNIE You may take a step, how are you sir? ANNIE IV When I was a young girl, that I always wanted to be, to come into the aviations ANNIE Just follow the image right in front of you ANNIE IV It was my dream I couldnt get through, into thatThis was a good opportunity for me to be into aviations LINDY like the picture here ANNIE It set the alarm on to your left LINDY what do you think it might be, have a look, do you have something in your pocket sir? TRAINEE Do you want me to take it out? ANNIE Yes Sir, Can you please take it out LINDY I try to instill in my students that your job is very important Youre the last line of defence, really Whats at stake is the safety of our passengers LINDY This is ANNIE, this is Diane DIANE Do you have anything in your pockets? DIANE You just alarmed here, take your shoes off for me LINDY So you need to be loud [ANNIE Yeah] and concise at giving instructions ANNIE Ok LINDY ANNIE does not lack confidence in the classroom but she is a little bit nervous at the moment, because once you get on to the floor it is a totally different scenario DIANE Male pat down please LINDY Cause his jeans were a little bit bunched, it picks up all the material ANNIE Ok, ya ANNIE Just walk through thank you, walk, thank you, just take a step ANNIE could you just walk out again and take out shoes and put it in the tray for me, please, and walk in again Thank you sir Same thing, hands up Just take a step You are all good now DIANE With that one you didnt have to take his shoes off cause he alarmed in the pockets You dont need to take his shoes off You didnt need to remove his shoes ANNIE Ok, ok DIANE but that is ok all good ANNIE Thank you DIANE Did you want to do this gentleman? ANNIE Okay ANNIE IV It is challenging to be alone on the floor, me with the passengers ANNIE Some little things that I have to improve myself in LINDY And you are aware of what standard that I require from you tomorrow Bit nervous? ANNIE Bit nervous LINDY hopefully by tomorrow afternoon you will be signed off as Aviation Security Officer ANNIE I will present well, and then I will get the job TEST OFFICER The test piece I will be using is a simulated explosive device GRAHAM I think aviation is practically attractive to terrorists, simply because it is a high profile target That is why there is so much scrutiny over the security TEST OFFICER Yeah, just go to lane eight TEST CONTROLLER So she is looking at it now TEST CONTROLLER Once she has made the decision to stop it and she thinks it is something she is going to press a silent alarm and switch off the screens TEST CONTROLLER She is a bit unsure TEST CONTROLLER yep so she made the decision and she turned off the screens She is going to show it to her supervisor just for confirmation, now they have made the choice this is my time to go in and debrief on what has happened TEST OFFICER hey, good job Talk me through what you saw here, what you did, you had a pretty good look? DONNA I saw the organic, then I saw the machine here with wires and battery TEST OFFICER If there is a bit of clutter there in the future, you also have that and you can dial it back And in the event that it may be a bit harder to see you can zoom in as well TEST OFFICER Really well done by the security there, they used all the tools at their tools at their disposal to pick up what was a pretty tricky device to find TEST OFFICER You did the right thing, you nailed it really good Great TEST CONTROLLER Threats are being stopped everyday, and also to those that are potentially thinking about trying anything at the airport The staff here and the team here are exceptionally trained and they are going to stop any sort of likely threat that is going to come to the airport ANTHONY This facility was built in and its purpose-built to breed raise and train detector dogs Whether that be for the Australia Border Force or other partner agencies including Australian Federal Police, Department of Agriculture, State Police, State Corrections as well as some select international agencies we work very closely with ANTHONY A typical year we breed Labrador Retrievers Those hundred and sixty dogs are then developed throughout the first twelve months of their life ANTHONY At nine weeks of age, the dogs are fostered into community homes of volunteers Through that phase foster carers and our development teams work together to bring out the best capabilities in our dogs ANTHONY We train the dogs to detect a range of prohibited and restricted items Narcotics, currency, tobacco, firearms and explosives Our dogs are really successful at what they do and weve developed a recognition wall for some of the great detections that theyve achieved, our handlers have achieved in the operational environment over the years which is testament to all the hard work put into them from the teams The dogs that we graduate are the best of the best DJARAN Ive known Warner about months now He is still a puppy, hes very energetic, however, he has calmed down a bit and hes very good at his job DJARAN; Warner is a narcotic dog at the moment but there is a possibility where he could get another capability such as firearms or cash The First day on the job when we get back to Sydney theres always the chance that Warner might not get me the level of search that I've previously seen Sydneys quite busy so he gets very distracted Coming from a training environment where hes getting a lot of rewards the fact hes not getting as many might throw him off a bit Well just have to wait and see what the first day on the job brings DJARAN Good manners mate, hey! DJARAN Oh, Hello! DJARAN Hes got plenty of personality this dog Hes only a puppy Hes very loving, hes very gentle DJARAN As you can see, hes very energetic Hes the perfect dog for this type of job You need a dog with high intent, very energetic and youre definitely gonna get a long service out of this dog Im very lucky to have him as a handler DJARAN As you can see hes very excited to be back in Sydney, his home, so well get stuck into it straight away DJARAN IV Even though weve completed the course, theres still things Ive got to teach him Well pretty much just be consolidating the skills that hes learnt while we were in MELbourne so thatll be our goal over today and the next twelve weeks Every deployment is different and I have expectations for him DJARAN Big stretch, let's go DJARAN Find it! Hey easy mate, here! Warner DJARAN IV Hes very hyped up It is quite busy, especially this time of the morning theres multiple flights down at one time DJARAN Warner Find it DJARAN IV Theres multiple people around the carousel- DJARAN Find it DJARAN IV quite close to the carousel DJARAN Hey here DJARAN IV So those things can affect a dogs focus throughout the search Fingers crossed we can come across some stuff DJARAN Find it! easy mate! Warner, find it! DJARAN Here, Warner DJARAN IV We came here to search bags and he loves searching passengers and when passengers are so close to the bags he prefers to go over and search them which is great at a certain point, however, operation-wise, I need him to clear the bags Thats where I have to step in and drive him through the search DJARAN Warner! Here! Find it! Im calling it! DJARAN Its because hes constantly going over the pax OFFICER Do they need to be further back? DJARAN Nah dont worry about it Im just going to call it there DJARAN IV Weve set up a training run in a bag DJARAN yeah over th down there? DJARAN IV Were gonna redeploy back down near the carousel and give him a reward hopefully that switches him on to start searching bags more DJARAN Come along OFFICER Ill chuck it on Might not be the first bag but there-ish DJARAN Well see how we go anyway Im gonna start down the other end Work me way down the pax Hey DJARAN Find it!, Find it! That a fella! Good searching DJARAN YES! Good Boy! Good Boy! DJARAN The reward that Warner gets is a rolled up towel essentially We call it a dummy so what the dummy is, he gets that when he responds to the thing that we want him to respond to and once he sits to whatever we want him to, we give him the dummy and its the ultimate reward for them so hopefully that switches on in his brain that if he searches carousel more he might find a reward so fingers crossed that works DJARAN Good Fella! DJARAN Find it! Good searching mate! DJARAN Good searching mate! DJARAN Come on! Here! Warner! DJARAN Once Warner assesses a bag, he will show me one of three things We call it a change in behaviour So it could be, he might flick back to the bag and further investigate He might do a body prompt which is he might stiffen up a little bit and head back to the interested parcel CLAE Perfect! pull some of those off for you! DJARAN That a fella! CLAE Hes just given an indication to a bag, weve just pulled that bag off and we just put it to the side DJARAN Good boy mate! CLAE Thatll do DJARAN Find it! DJARAN IV We laid down all the referrals that Warner gave me throughout the deployment on the carousel DJARAN Come round Find it DJARAN IV We placed em in a line to further eliminate the bags and he showed interest to a specific bag and we just placed it bag on the carousel for now Well follow it around well wait til the owner picks it up and well have a chat to em see if there's anything of ABF interest within the bag CLAE Just hold on mate, were doing something with the dog Just set back for us please DJARAN Find it Clever boy! Come on Good searching mate KADE So just clothes in here? MALE PASSENGER yeah just clothes CLAE Medical marijuana back in Canada? FEMALE PASSENGER yeah I grow, at a facility, so could just be its on the clothes CLAE Okay KADE She said that she works at a cannabis store, in Canada, at a dispensary DJARAN Okay yeah so we need to just get an ion scan Yep no worries DJARAN IV So through questioning and examination its revealed that the female passengers actually working at in a chemist growing medical marijuana over in Canada So this is just an ion scan, this is a trace detection so what this does is it indicates to us whether narcotics have been concealed inside the bag or if the passenger has come across narcotics along his travels So we just stick it in and itll come up and let us know Its in now DJARAN IV Didnt come up with anything on the iron scan so all clear here so well probably just do further examination of their baggage and then further questioning and send them on their way DJARAN Just to give you a heads up, we did the scan and it came back negative CLAE Okay no worries Awesome DJARAN Thank you CLAE Sweet CLAE IV We did trace detection, ion scan, nothing was found Pat scout KADE, he examined the bag so we questioned the passengers and they seemed legitimate so were happy to release them CLAE Sweet, thanks guys Appreciate it DJARAN Thanks guys PASSENGERS Thank you both CLAE Enjoy Australia! DJARAN Thanks mate CLAE Thanks man Good work Thank you CLAE So Warners first day back, he actually performed quite well His search level was really good and yeah I got a referral bag out of it, so it's good MICHAEL I am standing in a good area, this is a good area cause I can get your ten K area through here MICHAEL At the moment it is pretty quiet, maybe word is out We will move to a different area MICHAEL It is an area renowned for people to be speeding MICHAEL you give them about twenty metres, if they are still doing over the speed limit that is when you have a word to them MICHAEL Hey Bud, I just got you doing you were doing eighteen and you have gone down to seventeen You know it is a ten K zone? DRIVER Yah MICHAEL He has lost three points for exceeding less than ten K in a ten K zone It takes three years to get those points back and you are going to lose your license so he wont be able to drive for two weeks MEL We are going for a drive today, I am actually going to get my ADA, Authority to Drive Airside permit, so Im pretty excited about that I have been looking forward to this one for a while The only problem is I have got to do a practical exam, so lets see how we go MEL It is really important to have this, there might be the need for us to drive between terminals airside to get there a lot quicker I really wanted to nail this and get this out of the way GEORGE Let me give you a tip, see that thing that looks like a Highway, this is not the Hume Highway, it is the runway [MEL okay fair enough] and that thing there that is just about to go on to it MEL Yah? ANTONI what you can do MEL, you can just park the vehicle in where it was please MEL Yep ANTONI ok you can leave the vehicle running MEL that was good, no issues with your driving behaviour You did not perform anything unsafe in that assessment For that you have met the criteria and you are deemed competent Well done MEL Fantastic! Thanks very much, great news, ANTONI ANTONI you are welcome mate MEL woohoo! I can travel between both terminals, well all three terminals now airside if Im responding to something that is a matter of urgency That just means that now I can be there when I need to be, as quick as I can LINDY Today hopefully is your last day of your on the job training, however, it doesnt mean you have been deemed as competent just yet, you still have hours to go, where I need to see you demonstrate your skills and knowledge ANNIE Today is a big day for me Im ready, Im ready to be on the floor LINDY So i will be coming around during the day asking you questions LINDY The dealbreaker for me will be their skills, are their skills up to the required level LINDY so he is being assessed today, I know it is stressful Wait till your buddy is with you LINDY so if that is not up to standard and they need more practice I wont be signing them off ANNIE Ill ask and request for you not to touch your bag while I open the bag for the search please Thank you ANNIE this is more than , really you shouldn't be taking this with you on board There is nothing else here Ill give a check on to this and rescan it again sir Thank you, just hold on for a second SECURITY OFFICER This one, even it feels empty but its grams so unfortunately youre gonna lose this one today This toothpaste is grams so youre gonna lose this one unfortunately today, as well Thats ml so this cant go as well PASSENGER F*** sake man, that stuffs expensive man SECURITY OFFICER I understand, I understand PASSENGER I cant bear the money- LINDY There was a few things that I wasnt happy with SECURITY OFFICER Carry on bag, its not allowed So grams or ml thats the maximum allowed- PASSENGER Thats tiny LINDY A few of the processes werent exactly what I was looking for, but I am going to give her some feedback LINDY I need to see you individually, dont just plonk it all in there, individually when you see it check it, over ml, dispose of it ANNIE when I see you standing there, and everything just went blank and I was really sweating LINDY There is a lot of pressure because I am there watching her, it threw her off a little bit We will have another go and see how she goes I am hoping that I will be able to sign her off LINDY do you want a tissue? ANNIE i got a tissue already thats I was- SECURITY OFFICER So if you could find any liquids or anything like that in the front ANNIE Ok, thank you Whose bag is this? ANNIE Scissors and liquid in your bag ANNIE Let me open this for you sir PASSENGER Ok, sorry, I forgot that was there ANNIE Sorry Sir, you cant be taking this with you, because it is a pointed one, sharp end, so I will be throwing this away PASSENGER Okay]Thank you This is it is supposed to be mls only that you can carry sorry So I am going to throw this away Just rescan it again PASSENGER Oh okay ANNIE Thank you Sir LINDY She is taking the knowledge onboard and she is putting it into practice LINDY I think we will do a little bit of body scan and see how you are travelling with that Ready to go? Up! Good boy! DJARAN Alright, here we go! DJARAN IV This is our first day back on the job after completing training so all thumbs up at this point I think he searched quite well which is pleasing to see DJARAN Lets go DJARAN IV So operationally, we deploy here a lot We get a lot of operational tasks from the ABF team here at the International Freight Facilities DJARAN Good boy DJARAN IV So Im just about to deploy Warner Fingers crossed we can come across some stuff DJARAN Here ah, find it! DJARAN High That a fella DJARAN Find it Good searching DJARAN There we go Find it DJARAN He showed interest to that parcel twice and in this sort of environment if he does show that sort of behaviour then hes on something CLAE Hes all over it so- CLAE IV As the dogs deployed, if he indicates to a parcel, which could mean multiple a lot of things, so the parcel will get referred to our ABF offices and they have the authority to examine those further for us on our behalf and theyll assess it and see if its actually got any narcotics in that parcel DJARAN Hey, good boy! DJARAN Up! DJARAN Find it DJARAN Yes! Good boy! You knew it was there didnt ya? You knew it was there Good boy! DJARAN IV In terms of concealment, it was actually quite difficult for Warner, so I was actually quite pleased with how he performed on that so its a good indicator of where hes at in his training, well just build on that and continue to try and get better and better CLAE Warners referral actually was a detection It's just been confirmed it's actually a kilo of cannabis by the other ABF officers and so were just about to chuck it through the x-ray now just to confirm that This is the parcel here and you can see there is an anomaly in the centre of the package and thats been confirmed as one kilogram of cannabis Now its being referred on and itll get destroyed or referred onto the AFP for further investigation DJARAN Oh good boy! CLAE Its very good for Warner being one of our newer dogs It's good to see him get on the ball with some detections and there will be plenty more to come no doubt LINDY You may feel like you are competent but if I dont feel like you will be ok out there on your own and you could get into trouble I wouldnt put it out there And I know it can be nerve-wrecking out there with me hanging around and assessing you but I have got you four down here because today I have deemed the four of you competent And I am going to sign you off as aAviation SECURITY OFFICER LINDY Well done guys LINDY Yeah? Well done guyswell done guys its been a long journey of , well weeks for you LINDY Are you its great, congratulations! ANNIE Yeah, thank you Im happy Its emotional but Im happy Thank you Peers Congratulations ANNIE And now I am today, in Australia, Sydney Airport as an Aviation SECURITY OFFICER LINDY Oh good! You alright? ANNIE Yes thank you LINDY You right? You okay? ANNIE Ya ANNIE Ill be screening everyone that comes pass, Im so happy NARRATOR Every country has a gateway to the rest of the world in australia, its sydney airport managing flights a day The most popular tourist destination in the country, different airlines carry more than million passengers annually Orchestrating the movement of this city within a city is a monumental task from the bowels of baggage sorting to the airports seven nerve centre , people work around the clock to keep sydney airport running safely and on time Since its humble beginnings in , sydney airport boasts a rich historywith over one hundred years of growth and transformation and today, this bustling aviation hub is poised to be even busier With new direct flights between sydney and bangkok, sydney international could potentially welcome more than ninety thousand additional travellers annually more people passing through the airport means there is a bigger demand on airport security to keep the airport safe today the airport is putting the screening staff under the microscope, sending in two covert officers that will both test and rate their performance The officers involved in the undercover operation need to keep their identities shielded due to the classified nature of the testing if the screener fails the test, they will undergo further training The female test officer, dressed in dark t-shirt and white sneakers, poses as a passenger the test controller watches on from nearby the test officer is concealing a metal object in her clothing that closely resembles a potentially dangerous and prohibited knife body scanners reveal anything on the body that is non-organic, such as plastic or metallic objects the test controller must quickly intervene to alert the screening officers that this is a test and not a threatening real life situation a group of new security recruits are currently undergoing intensive training to join the security team all the students have already completed a comprehensive classroom component before they can be signed off, they need to do on-the-job training and pass a final assessment Before any trainee can screen a passenger They need to observe an experienced officer It is now annies turn to work with a real passenger The man is cleared, but annie has made an error Another covert security sting is about to take place having already successfully tested a prohibited knife, it is now time to test a more dangerous item, and activate the most serious security event that can occur at the airport Sydney airport was last targeted by terrorists in , when two mens plan to get a bomb aboard an etihad flight, carrying passengers, was foiled at check in the life or death stakes of keeping the airport safe makes stopping the decoy bomb crucial. The test officer, dressed in a white polo shirt, will act as a passenger with the dummy bomb at security and ready to go through screening, the operation begins if she does not signal screen black, the decoy bomb will make it through security [;] the control officer heads into inform the screener that it is a simulated device Sydney airport continuously trains its security personnel and invests in new technology however, there is one weapon in its arsenal that cannot be replicated by man or machine The detector dog is an invaluable asset to airport security These extra special security ks begin their career, here, at the australian border force detector dog center, kilometers from sydney airport in melbourne, victoria in the breeding program began with less than labrador retriever pups today numbers have more than tripled the national detector dog programme started in with just dogs today there are around operational dogs in locations across australia Today is the graduation ceremony for four outstanding detector dog teams acquiring a fully operational detection dog is a costly process, requiring a significant investment of $, and a challenging nine-month training period for both the dog and its handlers to achieve seamless teamwork and mastery of essential skills At dawn break, the first flights depart and arrive, signaling the start of daily operations at sydney airport as airport personnel and security teams gear up for the morning's influx of travelers, it's the first day on the job for this new recruit [;] fresh from graduating from the detector dog training program in victoria, they are ready to put their new skills to the test for warners first day as a narcotics detector dog he will be stationed at sydney airport international terminal In the space of a year, these specialised dogs have contributed to the discovery of almost tonnes of narcotics in australia And today the rookie warner is searching for substances on the baggage reclaim carousel But warners first-day excitement maybe playing against him With warner's first deployment falling short of expectations, djaran and his colleagues decide to try a different approach First djaran allows warner to search passengers But warners behaviour must now be focussed on the carousel in order to get his reward Now with the training exercise over, warner is back on the real job dogs have an incredibly powerful sense of smell They have a much larger number of scent receptors in their noses compared to humans While humans have around million scent receptors, some dog breeds can have over million scent receptors this allows them to detect even the faintest smells Not just one bag but three! The team will perform an isolation test to verify by lining them up with three other dummy bags now they have to wait for the owner to claim the suspicious bag this will reveal whether warner made his first drug bust the owners of the luggage claimed it and have been taken aside for additional screening As the suspicious luggage is being further searched, the female passenger shares her theory on why detector dog warner had referred their bag michael isnt your typical highway patrol officer As an airport traffic cop, he enforces some of the slowest speed limits on any road in the city within a city, the airside tarmac rivals even the busiest highways strict speeding limits are necessary, and failure to adhere to them will mean points on any airside driving permit As the authorised drivers share the airfield with active aircraft safety is paramount as one employee loses his permit another newer employee is trying to secure his as a new terminal supervisor, mel is required to complete this training for his role driving between terminal and is sixty minutes faster than walking landside driving instructor antoni will be taking mel on a thirty minute airside driving test to determine whether or not he is competent one mistake can lead to an instant fail mel will need to show he is competent to navigate around active aircraft, being hyper alert to any parked aircraft that may be pushing back and aircraft crossing live taxiways any mistake here could damage aircraft and put passengers at risk with an aircraft at a bay, and another waiting beside the taxiway there is a risk that one may be about to move any wrong move here could be extremely dangerous The seven trainee aviation security officers will be assessed on all areas of security screening they will be required to operate in trainee annie must search all parts of the bag, and remove any liquids over one hundred mls annie has missed some items a qualified security officer has been signaled to step in having made some errors on her first attempt at a bag search, trainee annie, is under the watchful eye of her trainer lindy for her next attempt sydney airports robust security screening process doesnt just end inside the terminal outside freight and cargo screening is just as important sydney airport is a major hub for freight transport to and from australia, handling around % of the national cargo traffic after a successful morning at the airport, rookie detector dog warner and handler djaran are deployed to search for narcotics at an international freight facility in sydney in a quiet warehouse, fewer distractions can benefit warner's drug detection, unlike in a busy airport however the challenge lies in distinguishing closely-knit odors due to the vast cargo quantity to overcome this challenge, djaran guides him through the space and helps him focus on the specific odours that he has been trained to detect while they wait to find out if warners referral is a positive or false response warner has one final mission - another training exercise to locate a controlled substance, this time hidden within the freight djaran hopes that warner will successfully locate it, consolidating his odor-searching skills and earning him his favorite reward before warner finishes his first day on the job the result of his previous referral is in after eight hours on the floor trainer lindy is ready to reveal the results of the assessment Among these exceptional teams are warner and australian border force officer djaran, who are now ready to begin their operational career. 1
