We did some examinations on the packages, and during the X-rays, it determined some anomalies that were inside. So, it's sealed up. Let's see if I can open it up. Inside there's a cake and frosting, and it smells like carrot cake. Yup, appears to be cocaine. They have their emblem to identify which organization it belongs to, where it's going. So we'll do the next one. It has the same narcotics inside. The same emblem. So it looks like it comes from the same drug trafficking organization. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERTO This is unique. Since I have been here in Miami, I have not seen anything smuggled in cake. They're very inventive when it comes to it. Let me just weigh this. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERTO That's four keys. Each key approximately is running about 28,000 to 30,000. Today, an undercover officer will attempt to deliver these packages. Our ultimate goal is to figure out who's gonna receive it, and what their involvement is. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO Cut it open here. My team, we do enforcement that's specific to importing violative cultural property artifacts into the United States. Wow. That's a nice piece. All my friends tease me and say we're kinda like Indiana Jones. Protecting other countries' rich cultural histories. This is a Phoenician gold mask. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO I joined the army at a ripe age of 18, and I got to go, travel and see things around the world. And I was in Iraq shortly after Iraqi's national museum was looted. Knowing how that impacted the Iraqi people's sense of history, that was my first sense of how important cultural property enforcement is. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO It says we're .8 miles (1 kilometer) out. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO We're heading to New Jersey. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO One of my colleagues from HSI called me up to tell me that they're about to examine a storage unit that contained the cache of ancient mosaics. They invited me to come on down because it might be connected to someone that I previously detained a mosaic from. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT We're gonna open up the unit. Get a look at it. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT I'm a special agent with Homeland Security Investigations and I'm assigned to a cultural property unit, and we investigate stolen and looted antiquities, and we try to repatriate them to their country of origin. We received some information about these mosaics and the individual who owns the storage unit and it led to here. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO Oh, wow. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Beautiful. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO That's amazing. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT I'm guessing somewhere around 20? Or more, maybe. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO That's the most I've seen in one place. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Yeah. The owner of these antiquities is an elderly gentleman of Lebanese descent. He resided in the United States for a period of time, but he no longer resides in the United States. He's overseas. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO I have to tell you Rob, they look a little too pristine. What's in the boxes? That's not a good sign. It's pigments. Just the shades of the pigments that are in there are all the shades of the tiles. Ah, well, we have a bucket of tiles. That's usually the tell-tale sign of a forger. It's very rare that mosaics this big survive antiquity this intact. We've been duped before where we've had the mosaics that the tiles are real, but the composition is a modern replica. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT We have a subject matter expert that's going to assist us and determine the authenticity of the mosaics, whether they're actual antiquities or whether they're replicas. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Hopefully, the subject matter expert's here shortly. SECRETARY SALLY JEWELL The United States stands ready particularly in the area of law enforcement in the fight against wildlife trafficking. MAN Trafficking says we value trinkets more than we value these magnificent animals in the wild. SECRETARY SALLY JEWELL We will stop the poachers. We will stop the profits to address this transnational threat. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST POWELL We're on the way to a air cargo warehouse in Miami. We just got a call from the Senior Wildlife Inspector with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The shipment we're gonna go look at is coming from South America and is going to a country in Asia. This is a common tripping route for a lot of smuggled wildlife. And the importers had a previous violation, so we just wanna go check the shipment and see what it is. OFFICER FERNANDO This one here. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST POWELL Right here? OFFICER FERNANDO Yeah, right here. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ We got an alert of a possible shipment containing illegal seafood products. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST POWELL This is it. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ We have a total of 18 boxes, so we're gonna check to make sure that everything is in compliance, uh, and let's see what we get. Let's take a look. Sea cucumbers, fish bladders. In this case, the species on the shipment we don't regulate it. This box is good to go. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST POWELL You all wanna try and open another box? INSPECTOR GONZALEZ Yeah. Let's open another one. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST POWELL Oh, wow. Wow. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ We got shark fins. I've been checking this type of commodity for the past two or three years, and in order to trade shark fins between countries, you need a special permit. At a quick glance, we have three species, two of them most likely in violation. So let's see if they have any documentation whatsoever. Let's tape it up and then let's take it. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST POWELL All right. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ This is a good catch, guys. So, now we are going to transport the boxes to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement in Miami so that we can do a more detailed examination and also IDing the fins and making sure that everything is documented. It's a really big seizure. We've gone through two boxes so far out of eighteen. This is just the beginning. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL Hi, guys. Thank you for being here. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL These two boxes right here, they were intercepted by CBP, and that's what we're delivering today. The location, it's an apartment building on the second floor. Hopefully, someone's there to take the package from us. But if there's no one there, they can leave the box right outside the door, and it'll be clearly visible from the parking lot. We're gonna set up surveillance, monitoring the package. If it moves, we'll follow it wherever it goes, and we'll go from there. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL Inside the cake that's gonna be delivered, there's no actual drugs in there. We went out and we purchased sheet cake, and recreated a cake by hand. It was a little challenging 'cause I've never made a cake in my life, but I fought through it, and we'll see if it works. The goal is to interview the individual, and see what information we can get from them as far as the supplier. Usually, there's bigger fish, and what we get is towards the bottom of the totem pole, and we'll work our case up from there. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL So there's our target location. We're gonna set up right in front of the apartment to keep an eye on the packages once it's delivered. Best case scenario is they go into the box, and retrieve the bricks. Worst case scenario, the boxes are placed outside with a return to sender. Package just arrived at target location. OFFICER ROBERTO Oh, Nelly. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL The boxes are dropped off at the front door. It's like fishing, you throw the line out there, and then, all of a sudden, eeeh. OFFICER ROBERTO All right. Here we go. We got a guy coming out. Target is a little over six feet, he has a beard. Here we go. OFFICER ROBERTO All right. Here we go. We got a guy coming out. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL Male with a black T-shirt came out of our target location. OFFICER ROBERTO He's standing there. He's looking at the boxes. He has not taken them inside yet. OFFICER ROBERTO He's texting on his phone right now. POLICE OFFICER One package just went in. OFFICER ROBERTO One package is inside. POLICE OFFICER Second package is going inside. OFFICER ROBERTO He's picking up the second one. Second package is inside. Oh, he's out. He has both boxes with him. Looks like he's locking his door. He's walking down the stairs. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL He's gonna load the boxes up into his car, and we'll follow him up. OFFICER ROBERTO Has a phone with him. Doesn't seem to be paying much attention to anything. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL He's headed out, so we're gonna see where he leads us. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE This is the mosaic of Gaea, the personification of the earth. It's been heavily restored, you can see around the eyes, some of these tesserae are modern. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE But, this is genuine. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Okay. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE It's ancient. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Let's take a look at this one. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE So, Neptune and Amphitrite riding in a four-horse chariot. Although the horses are hippocamps, they're half horse half sea serpent. There's an identical one in the Louvre. It's been repaired, but it's genuine. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT So surprisingly, they appear to be antiquities, which is great. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE No matter how much you do to a modern mosaic, you can't disguise it so much that it looks completely like an ancient mosaic. AGENT ROBERT So, this is what they're using to restore these? PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE Yeah, for sure. Often they are the ancient stones. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Okay. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE At any excavation that has mosaics, you find these stones just pushed to the side and there are people who collect them and sell them. When the mosaics left the country of origin, I suspect a number of them were damaged and they put in new tesserae to make it look as if they were in pristine condition, which was intended to increase the asking price on the art market. Are you planning to unroll this one? SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Yes. This is the one that we're very interested in. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE Okay. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT And I'm hoping that when we unroll it, it's okay. Fingers crossed. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE Me too. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST POWELL We brought the shark fins back here to the warehouse and we're just helping Fish and Wildlife process and go through it. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ Let's do this. Let's start filling this way. The shark fin trade is a very lucrative market. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ Approximately, a hundred million sharks are taken yearly to make the famous shark fin soup. Shark fin soup in Asia can go from a hundred dollars to four hundred, six hundred dollars a bowl. We have a mix of species, some of them fall into the Endangered Species Act and they require permits to be exported. So far, we have silky sharks, great hammerhead. This is a tiger shark. This is a pectoral fin. This shipment came in with no permits and that's why it makes the entire shipment illegal. OFFICER BAZER So this box is done, so now we can do, um, box. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ Let's get a total number on that one, box number one. OFFICER BAZER Okay. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ In this shipment, we have an approximate total of 1,400 pounds (635 kilograms). INSPECTOR GONZALEZ It'll go for $500 a pound (453 grams). So, this shipment's worth, approximately, 700 thousand dollars. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST POWELL We're looking at thousands of shark fins. This is the largest seizure I've ever been a part of, of working for CBP now for 10 years. INSPECTOR GONZALEZ It's a sad day for conservation and for sharks in general. There's hundreds of animals that were illegally obtained on this shipment. However, it's a good day for us because it directly affect the revenue from illegal shark fin trade. OFFICER PIERRE Hello, sir. TRAVELER Hello there. OFFICER PIERRE Where are you going? TRAVELER To San Diego. OFFICER PIERRE Are you declaring anything or bringing anything back from Mexico? TRAVELER A kitten. OFFICER PIERRE A what? TRAVELER A kitten. OFFICER PIERRE Is there a cat in that? TRAVELER Yeah. OFFICER PIERRE Oh, hey! Whose cat is this? TRAVELER My own. My own. OFFICER PIERRE Okay. Okay. Have a good day, man. TRAVELER Yeah. OFFICER CHEVALIER You've gotta go to secondary, okay? OFFICER MARTINEZ Female, driving by herself. OFFICER MARTINEZ The gas tank tapped solid. So now we're bringing her in for further inspection. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO How old was the female? OFFICER MARTINEZ She's about 46 years old. The dog alerted to the gas tank. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO You're gonna look through the Z-portal? OFFICER MARTINEZ Yeah. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO Okay. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO We're waiting for the vehicle to go through the X-ray and quickly identify anything that is not supposed to be there. All right. Go ahead, bro. Yup, there are some anomalies. OFFICER MARTINEZ Looks like the rest of the vehicle is clear, so we're concentrating on the gas tank. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO On that corner, it's got a little lever. OFFICER MARTINEZ This is the ascending unit where you can get into the fuel tank. This is the plate that goes on top of it. So you can see that it was tossed to the side, so that's a good indicator that they might have gotten through here. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO It just came off with a couple taps. This normally takes a lot more. Pull that. Let's take it off and, oh, yeah, I see packages. OFFICER MARTINEZ They got a string. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO Makes it easier to pull the packages out. OFFICER MARTINEZ There we go. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO It's a crystalline substance. OFFICER MARTINEZ We normally see crystal meth coming in on the gas tanks 'cause they're easier to mold, you know, smaller packages. Gas tanks are a good concealment method for bringing drugs across. They'll pack up the drugs, then they'll fill up as much gas as they can. There's usually about five gallons left, so that's enough to get them across. And they'll mess with the fuel indicator so it'll look like it's full but it's actually not. Oh, there's a lot of strings here. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO That's a lot of strings. OFFICER MARTINEZ I've never seen a gas tank with strings attached to them. Never. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ANGULO Whenever they get to, they probably don't have a lot of time to pull the drugs out, so this facilitates their job. It's a lot of gasoline. Very strong. So the mask protects a lot more than coronavirus. It looks like we got everything. OFFICER MARTINEZ So 10, 20, 30, 40, 45. Now we're gonna test. OFFICER BOYLE The air came out. It was vacuum sealed. OFFICER MARTINEZ Positive for methamphetamine. Forty-two, forty-three. All right. OFFICER MARTINEZ Total weight is 21.5 kilograms (47.4 pounds), $156,000. That's quite a bit from a gas tank. It's a pretty good seizure. Now I'll call HSI and they'll come and interview the person and they will continue on with prosecution. For an amount like this, she's facing federal prosecution and more than likely she'll go to prison. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI We're headed to a warehouse. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI This one has a lot of European shipments, South American shipments, a lot of source countries for us for narcotics. So, we'll see what we could find over here. You know, take a look at this, Ecuador. POLICE OFFICER What is that? SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI I don't know, let's find out. It's like blankets. SUPERVISORY OFFICER RAMIREZ Ecuador is a big transit point now for dope coming out from South America. Heroin, cocaine. We usually get stuff in the embroidery of this inside the lining. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI A lot of times, what they try to do is nickel and dime. So, they put little baggies of coke inside little handicrafts. You always got to check. You gotta cut it open. This one is what it is. SUPERVISORY OFFICER RAMIREZ All right, I'd seen enough. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI Yeah. SUPERVISORY OFFICER RAMIREZ Coming from Mexico POLICE OFFICER It's all food and breads. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI Here you got peanuts. Tamales. Looks like a lot of shipments coming from Mexico. Mexico, big source country. Cocaine. Heroin. Fentanyl. Every, meth, you know, meth, everything. So, what they like to do is they like to conceal it inside the food a lot of times. They think it's gonna fool the X-rays or they think it's gonna fool us. You know, we're not gonna take a look at it. But we take a look at everything. You know, we have to. POLICE OFFICER Almost looks like giant cherries. POLICE OFFICER Those are Chilean apples. Those are bigger, so it's a different fruit. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI Nothing. Man, it's sticky. ASSISTANT PORT DIRECTOR GALANTINO It's funny that those are a different color. POLICE OFFICER We got powder. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI That's it. ASSISTANT PORT DIRECTOR GALANTINO There's another one. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI Now, we're separating the actual contraband itself from the fruit. ASSISTANT PORT DIRECTOR GALANTINO I wish they'd chosen something that was less syrupy. They think we're not gonna get our hands dirty. POLICE OFFICER What you got there? SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI I have seven. ASSISTANT PORT DIRECTOR GALANTINO This one has, yup, seven. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI What we'll do now, we're gonna use our Gemini machine to just confirm. There you go. It's cocaine hydrochloride. POLICE OFFICER Get a weight on this. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI All right. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI .391 kilograms (13 ounce). ASSISTANT PORT DIRECTOR GALANTINO I mean, they were not greedy. Not greedy at all. MAN Not at all. ASSISTANT PORT DIRECTOR GALANTINO We have to dig through all this food to get a small load. SUPERVISORY OFFICER RAMIREZ We've definitely been seeing more and more smaller amounts. I think they're testing out different concealments and see what they can get through. They don't wanna lose a big shipment. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI Now, we're gonna notify HSI, they're ultimately gonna take possession of the narcotics themselves. ASSISTANT PORT DIRECTOR GALANTINO And they may do a controlled delivery to find who this was going to. And then perhaps develop a case from this. At the end of the day, it's about disbanding these drug trafficking organizations. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI This shipment here, this is just one of those three or four hundred that come in multiple times a day. Let's see what else they got. OFFICER That’s him right there. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL He's east on 16, about to go north on 102 Ave. Yeah, he's taking it. OFFICER ROBERTO Purr, baby, purr. POLICE OFFICER He's gonna make a right turn on southwest 89th. OFFICER ROBERTO What lane? POLICE OFFICER In lane number five. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL Lane five. OFFICER ROBERTO I don't know where he went. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL We lost him? Oh. OFFICER ROBERTO He's in the post office. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL Oh. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL He went to the post office. POLICE OFFICER He went into the post office. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL Worst case scenario, he could be dropping off the boxes at the post office, and just simply say it was dropped off at his house, and it's not his. So I'm gonna go into the post office, and see if I can figure out what he's trying to do with those boxes. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL So, we are at the post office. I was inside with the subject. He's dropping it off, sending the package through priority mail. OFFICER ROBERTO All right. Target is out of the post office, empty handed, we are not gonna follow him. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL The subject is just one of the middle people that's part for this organization. POLICE OFFICER Standby, Danny's gonna go inside. POLICE OFFICER He's going for the box. POLICE OFFICER Yup. SPECIAL AGENT DANIEL We'll just hold off until we get as high as possible, and then, we'll try to encounter him again at a later date. Yes, sir, okay. So, we were able to recover the package, and saw it was headed to an address in Georgia. Now that we know the package is going to Georgia, we'll reach out to our counterparts in Atlanta. It's like an onion, bunch of layers, and you just start peeling it. Hopefully, we can reach to whoever is up on the top of this. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO One, two, three. All right, slow, slow, take your time. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO Yeah, right here, right here's good. All right. I'm gonna cut it this way, hold on. AGENT ROBERT Is this gonna be all right being unrolled? PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE I've never done anything like this before. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT That makes, that makes two of us. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE If the tesserae seem too fragile, yeah, the tesserae are awfully loose. I'd say it's potentially important enough that you might not wanna unroll it unless you have a conservator next to you. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Absolutely. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE Who can do emergency conservation as necessary. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Right. I, I think that's, uh, the way to go. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO Yes. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO I bet you it probably wasn't meant to be, um, rolled up this long. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT No, I'm sure it wasn't. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE This is the earliest of all the mosaics I've looked at today. It's about 200 C.E. There's no question that this is genuine. This is high quality work. Beautifully preserved, filled with inscriptions, and inscribed mosaics. Those are not a dime a dozen. This is the most valuable of everything we've seen today. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO The only places I've seen mosaics this big have been in museums. PROFESSOR BRIAN ROSE Uh-hmm. That's where they should be. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT We were able to determine that all these pieces are in fact antiquities. At this point, we're gonna go back and determine whether they were stolen or looted. It's possible we could seize these items and then attempt to return them to their countries. SUPERVISORY OFFICER ACEVEDO It was a good day, Rob. Now I'm curious what is the value of all this stuff. We got a lot of money sitting in that storage unit. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Yeah. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE The backstory is, these two packages were sent from the U.S. Virgin Islands, and they were intercepted in Miami. There was approximately 2 kilos (4 pounds) of cocaine and cakes on top with a bunch of frosting, it's pretty crazy. So, today, we're doing a controlled delivery. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE I feel confident that this is probably gonna be the final destination, but we're gonna deliver it, and see where we go from there. All right, break. Our best case for today would be, we make the delivery, the packages go inside the house, and we go ahead and search the residents, hopefully, find either proceeds or more narcotics inside the house. We wanna figure out how that drug trafficking operation runs. We got our target house, there are actually some windows open up top, and we have a vehicle at home. All right. A Mercedes is in the driveway now. Go time, so, hopefully, everything goes as planned. POLICE OFFICER All right, he's just pulling up now. POLICE OFFICER He's opening the door to walk to the front. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE Copy. So I can see our undercover actually walking up to the house with one of the packages right now. POLICE OFFICER All right, he's got package number one. POLICE OFFICER He's walking to the house with it. POLICE OFFICER He's delivering the package now. POLICE OFFICER He's made contact. POLICE OFFICER Gave the first package. POLICE OFFICER He said the names and. POLICE OFFICER The guy replied, "Yes". Second package in the door. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE Second package just went into. Both packages were delivered to a young, oop, he's coming out with the boxes. POLICE OFFICER All right, front door is open. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE We gotta move. POLICE OFFICER Both boxes are going to the Mercedes. POLICE OFFICER We're definitely getting movement on the packages. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE Came right out of the house, put them in the car, and is on the move. POLICE OFFICER All right, he's out the driveway, and. POLICE OFFICER He's moving pretty quick. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE We'll follow and see what we come up with. POLICE OFFICER Okay. POLICE OFFICER Yeah, he's rollin' fast. POLICE OFFICER Coming up on Queen's River Drive. POLICE OFFICER He's going about 55. POLICE OFFICER He's on the left. I'll turn with him. POLICE OFFICER He's moving quick. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE He ran the stop sign there, but we'll get behind him. POLICE OFFICER Now he's picking up. POLICE OFFICER He's going about. POLICE OFFICER 60 miles an hour. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE I don't know if he's detected anything, or if he's just driving crazy. Let's see where he goes, but he's driving like a maniac. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI My father was customs here, 32 years. SUPERVISORY OFFICER TWAROWSKI So from the get-go, it's all I wanted to do. You know, find drugs, find this, find that. I can't stop looking. OFFICER RYAN I'm looking for items that are dense. OFFICER RYAN Ninety percent of what we're gonna get is food. It's gifts from home. Sometimes it's a case of grandma's cooking tastes better than any other cooking but you still have to check it. I'm wondering what that is. Everything's too dense. I do not wanna clear the shipment without actually doing a visual inspection, and seeing what it is. POLICE OFFICER This one here? OFFICER RYAN Yeah. This is it. Crack it open. OFFICER DORTA We're just going through food, opening containers and hopefully we, we get lucky. Boss! I think I got something here. OFFICER DORTA I don't think it looks like a tamal. OFFICER RYAN It's definitely suspect. I'll grab everything, I'll give you guys some test kits in there and we'll take a good look. OFFICER DORTA They put contraband inside these large Tupperwares. If you take a look at it without opening it and inspecting it, it would just look like tamales. Maybe the person inspecting it will just let it go thinking it's food. SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS Okay. Go start off with those. We'll test them. OFFICER DORTA With the brown tape on them, you know you got something. I don't think these are the tamales I ordered. We get a test kit and we'll see what type of drug it is. So, when I pop it, it should turn to this almost like a beige color. As you can see. SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS We're looking at a good amount of heroin. I would say at least four pounds (1 kilogram). Maybe more upwards of five pounds (2 kilograms). SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS When we get back to the office, we have other equipment that we're gonna utilize to test it. Uh, we're also gonna go through each package individually because there are times when you get mixed loads. You'll get heroin and cocaine in the same packages but we won't know until we get back to the office and process it. POLICE OFFICER He's moving quick. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE I don't know if he's detected anything or if he's just driving crazy. POLICE OFFICER Right turn on BMH. POLICE OFFICER He's pulling into an apartment. POLICE OFFICER Is he trying a "heat check"? POLICE OFFICER He's circling right back around. POLICE OFFICER He's gonna be making a right again on BMH. POLICE OFFICER Is he doing a "heat check," or not? TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE Yeah. So, he did a maneuver, which we call a heat check. He pulled into this apartment complex, and abruptly started flying down the road, which is a maneuver trying to detect law enforcement. Y'all can roll up this way. POLICE OFFICER Stop him, or? TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE Yeah. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE Rather him get spooked than maybe kill someone on the road. I have a feeling he's gonna bail out and run. Feel comfortable to pull it now? POLICE OFFICER We're probably gonna get him stopped here in just a second. POLICE OFFICER He stopped. POLICE OFFICER He's out of the car. POLICE OFFICER He's taking the boxes out. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE The boxes are out of the car right now, and it looks like he's taking them towards another house. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE Turn on blue lights. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE See we didn't even plan for this. POLICE OFFICER We got him. POLICE OFFICER He had the box, and he was out of the car. POLICE OFFICER I think he was gonna drop it in this gazebo down there. POLICE OFFICER Saw me, got back in the car, hauled ass, and then umm. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE Okay. POLICE OFFICER Roy stopped him right here. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE He's in custody right now. Our guys all did a great job in stopping him from getting out on the main roads. We're just doing an inventory of the car. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE The cake is sitting here, so, obviously, he got into it, and saw what was in here. Hey, can I get somebody to run a handgun? He did have a loaded gun, it's a Glock 17 9mm. That was another threat to us, so it's good that we went ahead and took him down when we did. It's still a work in motion, now we're gonna go back and search the residence. OFFICER DORTA This is just our seizure room. Where any time we get any type of seizure, we bring it down here, do our processing. OFFICER DORTA I'm gonna test it again and we're gonna use our machine called the Gemini to verify that it is heroin. SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS The Gemini Thermo scientific unit is basically what the scientists call a spectrum analyzer. SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS It gives a read on of exactly what the chemical compound is and what percentage. OFFICER DORTA This package is testing positive for fentanyl. SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS Fentanyl? OFFICER DORTA Seven percent. SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS Seven percent fentanyl. There's been a change to what we found. There's an additional discovery of fentanyl in the product. Basically, the heroin has been mixed or cut and fentanyl is basically a drug that could be fifty, a hundred times, or more potent than heroin. So that is added to the mix to give it an extra kick. If it's the same kind of mix with the fentanyl in it, separate those and. OFFICER DORTA Oh. They're already separated. SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS All right. We thought we started with a couple hundred thousand dollars of heroin. SUPERVISORY OFFICER CAMPOS We're now looking at $800,000 with that fentanyl in it. Someone is definitely gonna be very upset that we've seized this. It's a combination of a lot of hard work and dedication on a part of these officers and agents because this doesn't just stop here. It's gonna continue on with HSI and they're gonna move forward with this, hopefully turn this into a very good investigation. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT That's a nice one. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT After reviewing all of the pieces, the subject matter expert confirmed that these mosaics are approximately twenty-five hundred years old and they were illegally exported from their countries of origin. Right now, we're in the process of seizing these antiquities and moving them to a secure storage unit under our control. The fun's just beginning because the heavy stuff is yet to come. OFFICER Yeah. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Some of them weigh around 600 pounds (272 kilograms). These pieces were purchased in the 70's and 80's when Syria controlled Lebanon and the region. The borders were open so these moved freely from country to country, and then were exported through Lebanon. Big one. OFFICER Imagine how they got that in there. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Yeah. You guys are good. We try to repatriate things pretty quickly. It'll be very rewarding to return these to their countries. Except, Syria has issues right now, so that will slow down the process. The most important piece in this unit, it's the most valuable piece. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Valued at around two and a half million dollars. They're fast. I didn't know they were gonna be so fast. This is the final piece. SPECIAL AGENT ROBERT Twenty-one mosaics seized, estimated at four and a half million U.S. dollars. We will bring them to a better place and return them to their countries of origin, and the individual could be indicted. TASK FORCE OFFICER DAVE We found some electronics, and some paperwork, and then, found a large quantity of US currency. I think there were four of them that were labeled 5K for five thousand dollars.
