How are you doing today? TRAVELER I'm good, how are you? OFFICER Good. Where are you off to? TRAVELER I'm going home. OFFICER Have a good day. TRAVELER Have a good day, sir. OFFICER Bye-bye. OFFICER Hey, how are you? Anything to declare today? Alcohol, tobacco, firearms? How much currency are you traveling with today? No currency? Okay. What were you doing in Canada? TRAVELER Not much. OFFICER Okay, how long were you there for? TRAVELER Just for the night. OFFICER Just for the night? TRAVELER Yeah. OFFICER Escort lane four. Escort lane four. All right, you wanna walk him over for me? OFFICER COLLINS This person was stopped due to a primary officer didn't think his story made a lot of sense. Sent him in just for an enforcement check to kind of see, "Hey, what's going on?" with it. OFFICER Have we checked the headliner? I'm gonna pop the trunk. OFFICER Oh, wow. OFFICER COLLINS Found a bag full of money. OFFICER COLLINS I opened the bag, full of money. OFFICER COLLINS Claimed he forgot he had, which I find hard to believe. OFFICER Follow me, please. OFFICER We're gonna do a pat down, okay? OFFICER Spread your feet. OFFICER COLLINS We did a pat down. Found more money. Said he got it gambling. OFFICER INGRAM All right. I'll start with the biggest bills and I'll separate them into stacks of ten. OFFICER COLLINS She's gonna count, and then we'll verify the amount. I've never had a money seizure. It's odd that people, you know, "Oh, I forgot I had that amount of money on me." OFFICER INGRAM I know when I have more than a hundred dollars. So, I don't know how you don't realize how much money you're traveling with when you're traveling with thousands of dollars, but. OFFICER COLLINS Yeah. OFFICER INGRAM Maybe that's a different bar that I'm not a part of, so. OFFICER COLLINS I think people don't declare their money because they think we're gonna take it from them. And we're not, we just want to know how much money's coming in and out of the country. All right, so we ended up with. OFFICER COLLINS Thirty-three thousand, six hundred and seventeen U.S. dollars. Pretty good day. His money's being seized because he failed to declare it. We'll pass the case off to HSI. They chose to come down and take the case. That money goes to our seized property specialist, and then it will stay in the vault till they decide what to do with it. All right. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY This is actually the Rio Grande. This is where the New Mexico/Texas border meet. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY And the river goes north into New Mexico. So that's why this is a busy area to smuggle people. I mean, real easy, you can pull off right here, somebody can jump in, and, and you're on the road, blending in with traffic. A lot of these smuggled humans, they just wanna come in, oh, for a better quality of life, make some money to send back home. When smugglers realize that they have this need, they'll exploit that. So the people that pick them up here are a part of it. They're, they're getting paid, they're making money. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY That's one of the many hazards that people that are being smuggled face and, you know, when they're coming across, is the train. They'll try to jump on a train, which is dangerous. You got everything from temperatures, vehicle accidents that they can get hurt on or even killed. They come across, you know, sometimes for a better life and end up in a, the family ends up in a worse situation than, than when they started their journey. AGENT The return comes back to a black Kia Soul. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Ten-four. So, this morning, we're working on an operation with Texas Department of Public Safety. They saw a black Kia going to an area in New Mexico where they pick up a lot of smuggled humans from stash houses. So, they're following it now and we're gonna head out there to see if we can assist in any way. If there are smuggled humans, they'll usually run with that case and then develop any, anything from there. We're not out here just trying to find the smuggled humans. We're out here trying to disrupt the organizations that are committing the criminal offense of smuggling. AGENT She's still heading northbound. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Ten-four. We're gonna see it come up pretty soon. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY There it is. AGENT Fresh green. Continuing north. AGENT We're moving. AGENT That's a go. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Ten-four. They'll pull him over and, uh, see if there are smuggled humans inside there. AGENT The stop's been initiated. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Ten-four. How's it going? AGENT So this young lady's claiming to be going to a house over there. AGENT Where they pick up. AGENT Supposedly, she was gonna go clean the house. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Okay. AGENT With no cleaning supplies. SUSPECT [speaking Spanish] But since I don't know. SUSPECT This area, I came early. SUSPECT Well, now you guys stopped me. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Okay. So, they suspected that she might be loaded with smuggled humans. Uh, when they stopped her, she, she wasn't loaded up. She's a U.S. citizen, so sometimes that's the person they'll use as a pickup driver. 'Cause if they do get caught and arrested, they won't get deported, uh, and they still have their citizenship. So that's kind of where we're at. Um, we cut her loose. Continue on with this investigation. Find somebody that picked up or is picking up smuggled humans. OFFICER PEREZ We're the Contraband Enforcement Team out of Miami. OFFICER PEREZ This team, we check hundreds of packages throughout the week. You, we see everything possible coming through Miami. Looks good. OFFICER This is from Ecuador going to Miami. It's pretty much somebody sending banana cream Jell-O. I mean, you can buy this stuff right here. OFFICER PEREZ It almost looks like ketamine from that. Look at the powder consistency. OFFICER You want me to call and get the. OFFICER PEREZ Yeah, get the Gemini. In Miami, we have a saying, "We don't get easy loads." The people smuggling this stuff through, they're gonna make us really work for it. So, it's on us to have that extra motivation, to be very thorough with our inspections. Sugar. Sugar and fake sugar. It's good to go. OFFICER PEREZ We're gonna just do a sweep at a warehouse. OFFICER SAVAGE This our mobile X-ray van. We use this to X-ray cargo most of the time, and passenger bags. So, we're trying to set up right now so we can X-ray this cargo on the right coming from Georgetown, Guyana. OFFICER PEREZ We've been noticing trends with this country for narcotics. OFFICER SAVAGE Come help me with this, man. We always have to look at cargo with voids in them. OFFICER PEREZ All right, cool. OFFICER SAVAGE So, just help me lift this fine. OFFICER PEREZ You get that end. OFFICER SAVAGE Lift with your knees. Do you see anything unusual? OFFICER ESTRADA It's either really dense, or they put shielding on it. OFFICER ESTRADA Smugglers, they will use a shielding material. OFFICER ESTRADA To block the image. OFFICER ESTRADA So that would be an indicator for us to. OFFICER ESTRADA Inspect the cargo. OFFICER PEREZ All right. Let's see what we can do. OFFICER SAVAGE Let's see. Let's see how heavy it is. It looks like a pump? OFFICER Yeah. OFFICER SAVAGE What it looks like to you? Like a pump, right? OFFICER Looks like some kind of motor. OFFICER SAVAGE Ah. Let's see. We'll have a better look. OFFICER PEREZ There's been a big trend in narcotics being smuggled through machine parts. So, it's worth the look. OFFICER There you go. There you go. That's good. OFFICER PEREZ All right, it twists right off. What's in there? OFFICER I don't know. OFFICER PEREZ That don't make sense. [COMMERCIAL BREAK] OFFICER I don't know if it's hydraulic fluid or some kind of fluid. OFFICER SAVAGE But why would they mix electronics with fluid? OFFICER SAVAGE This gives me a funny feeling 'cause there's electronics in there, so. There's also some wires and they're covering the wires with some liquid. I don't usually see that. That don't make sense. OFFICER PEREZ Let me field test it. OFFICER Yup. OFFICER PEREZ And see if it's not narcotics. I know some people think, "Oh, it's not powder." You know? But, we've seen cocaine in liquid form. Liquid form makes it a lot easier to hide, because some people don't really suspect to see liquid cocaine. Yeah, it's not popping. OFFICER SAVAGE Let's try a different test. Bring a Gemini here. OFFICER PEREZ This is a Gemini. It pretty much analyzes any chemical and it can give you the chemical makeup of anything you, uh, you test it with. So maybe it'll pick up on narcotics. OFFICER SAVAGE Diesel. OFFICER PEREZ Diesel, power steering fluid, vacuum pump oil, and kerosine. All right. Yeah, so it's legit. I mean, you'll see it on, sometimes, on things that, like, have certain pressure gauges and stuff like that. OFFICER SAVAGE Better safe than sorry, right? OFFICER PEREZ If we would've just field-tested it, we knew, "Okay, that it's not coke." But Miami gets so many designer drugs coming through that, with the Gemini, it's, it's gonna pinpoint exactly what it is. The Gemini let us know that it's nothing illicit. Now everyone can rest easy knowing that we didn't let anything get past us. OFFICER SAVAGE Good as new, right? OFFICER PEREZ Yeah. OFFICER SAVAGE We try to dig through it a little bit more. And maybe we get lucky and we find something. The effort is what finds seizure. I always go by that motto. OFFICER WESLEY Have a good day, Miss. TRAVELER Thank you. OFFICER WESLEY Hello, familiar face. It is you. How are you? TRAVELER I'm okay. How are you? OFFICER WESLEY Wonderful. You're just on your way to work? TRAVELER I am. OFFICER WESLEY Have a good day. TRAVELER Have fun. OFFICER WESLEY You too. Take care. Currently, we're in Detroit, Michigan at the tunnel. OFFICER WESLEY That tunnel is surrounded by the Detroit river that runs between Canada and the city of Detroit. How we doing? TRAVELER Good. How are you? OFFICER WESLEY Not too bad, thank you. You get a lot of the frequent crossers, you know, everybody that's traveling for work every day. But then you get, you're thrown in your random travelers here and there that are coming from Toronto, Niagara Falls OFFICER SAKR How're you doing, sir? Anything that we need to declare today into the United States? TRAVELER No. OFFICER SAKR In Detroit, along with the tunnel, we also have the Ambassador Bridge. And the Detroit Metro Airport. OFFICER SAKR Between the land border and the airport, most of the things that we confiscate and seize are guns, ammunitions, and, uh, currency. OFFICER Move the vehicle to the secondary area. OFFICER Check for currency. OFFICER You Canadian? TRAVELER Yes, sir. Uh, where's the document? Oh. OFFICER Good. You have the documents. TRAVELER Hang on. Okay. We got it. I have that. Uh, hang on. Where's the other page? OFFICER [inaudible] have money? TRAVELER No, no. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Do you have the money? All the money we've got? TRAVELER Yeah, the money I gave, hang on. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Hold your money. TRAVELER Hang on, okay. I need my coat. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI This car was referred to stop and report money over ten thousand. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Everybody crossing into the United States, or out of the United States, they need to report everything excess of ten thousand U.S. dollars for tracking purposes. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI What do you have in your left pocket? TRAVELER Oh, a card. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Here, here. TRAVELER Oh, that's my sock. I have two stashes. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Can I see it? TRAVELER Yeah. That's my cash sock. This is how we, how we carry cash in Canada. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Let's go. We'll go inside. TRAVELER Okay. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI They declared a lot of money. We're gonna count the money. We'll check, you know, for possible extra money. We'll go inside and complete the inspection. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY This is like close to, uh, Mount Cristo Rey, which, like, half of it's on the Mexican side, half of it's on the U.S. side. The whole mountain isn't fenced up, so it's a popular place to smuggle people in. You can hike up over the mountain and back down. Pretty concealed, uh, with the draws and all the brush. There's a lot of places where they can get picked up. So, no fence, easy access, and within seconds you're blending in. AGENT He's pulling off to the side of the road. AGENT Stopped prior to the intersection. AGENT I got him. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Texas DPS pulled over a vehicle. And, uh, it might be loaded with smuggled humans. So, we're gonna assist DPS with the investigation. There's the vehicle. AGENT You came in pretty quick. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY What they got? AGENT They were just standing by until you got here. AGENT We'll check it out. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Okay. AGENT Unlock the door. [COMMERCIAL BREAK] AGENT [speaking Spanish] Let's go. Come outside. AGENT Got one on the floor. AGENT He's the driver? AGENT Yeah. AGENT All right. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Texas DPS pulled over a vehicle. Uh, it's gonna be good for, uh, three undocumented non-citizens. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY If somebody wants to make their way over here, we can kind of help them out on this. AGENT Been a long day? AGENT Where'd you travel from? SUSPECT Juarez. AGENT MONICA The driver stated he picked up these men. AGENT MONICA Speaking to the three men, uh, they told us that they had just crossed. They've been traveling for about two days through Juarez just to get here. It's a tough venture for them as well, in the desert, in the dry heat, without water. In El Paso, Texas right now, it's, you know, usually in the high nineties, hundreds. They're dehydrated. So, it is a lot of a, of a danger to them. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY Border Patrol's gonna help, uh, transport the smuggled humans. AGENT One at a time. AGENT One at a time. SUPERVISORY SPECIAL AGENT TONY What'll happen with the driver is, uh, they'll take him back to the DPS office. An HSI agent and a DPS agent will sit down and conduct an interview, and see what kind of information they get from him. See if we can identify a stash house, identify smugglers in Mexico, or any coordinators in the United States between here and the final destination of the smuggled humans. AGENT MONICA The driver is, like we always say, is just some small piece of a huge puzzle. We'll try to get more intelligence, you know, ultimately be able to break up the organization that's creating all of this. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI I have two Canadians. They declare sixteen thousand Canadian and four thousand U.S. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Can you guys come up here? TRAVELER Okay. TRAVELER Where we going? OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Right here. You can stay. TRAVELER I gotta empty out my pockets? OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Yup. TRAVELER This is my change. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Why do you have all this money? TRAVELER Uh, because we might be buying, buying a car. I own a hundred cars. OFFICER Yeah, who brings in cash? TRAVELER Everybody. I sell in cash. If people want to buy a car from me, they bring cash. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Is that what you do professionally? TRAVELER Well, I actually run a construction company, too. But I've been collecting cars since I was a kid. There should be about four thousand, give or take, in American money, I think. Uh, there should be, I think, eleven-five in that pile, but I'm guessing. Canadian money is not worth the paper it's printed on. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI This Canadian is like plastic, man. It's hard to count, man. TRAVELER I know. That's why we put it in the sock. 'Cause it just, it flies everywhere. Like it's-it's not like your guys' money where it has some grip. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Okay, you're real close. TRAVELER Perfect. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI It's close. Around sixteen thousand Canadian and what is like, uh. TRAVELER And four thousand American? OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Yeah, close to four thousand American. Yeah. TRAVELER Yeah, yeah. Cash is king. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI When he arrived at the primary inspection, he told how much money he has, and that was the right thing to do. The story adds up. He's going to Vegas to buy a car. It all sums up that it's legit travel. TRAVELER Okay, thank you very much. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Yeah. TRAVELER Pleasure. You guys have a great day. You do a good job. Thanks again. OFFICER ARNAUDOVSKI Bye-bye. TRAVELER Have a good one. SUPERVISORY OFFICER GUST So every day you get your travelers that come into the country that declare money honestly, and some people that don't. This guy was honest in his, his money declaration, it's pretty spot on. The, the comic relief makes the day go a little bit faster. OFFICER It's that crate over there. OFFICER We got it. OFFICER The K-Nine's gonna run it. OFFICER PEREZ One of our members of our targeting team targeted this piece of cargo because of the route that it's taking. OFFICER That's a good alert. OFFICER Good boy. Good boy. OFFICER PEREZ We got an alert on the box. It's a positive hit. OFFICER PEREZ That gives us even more incentive to check the inside of the cargo. OFFICER Take it out and keep going. OFFICER The heck is that? OFFICER Hey. OFFICER Doesn't look right. OFFICER PEREZ This stands out. That this was haphazardly slapped together, the welding on it is very sloppy. So we're gonna take a look at it with an X-ray. OFFICER PEREZ Too dense? OFFICER Yeah. OFFICER PEREZ We sent it through the X-ray. Unfortunately, it's too dense. So that's where we'll have to do a more intrusive inspection. And, uh, the only way we can do that is to actually drill the item. And right there, a white powder. [COMMERCIAL BREAK] OFFICER PEREZ Looks like powder, a white powder. That is not supposed to be there. OFFICER Let me get a test kit right now. OFFICER PEREZ We're going to do a field test, uh, to see, uh, if it's narcotics and what kind of narcotics it could possibly be. That should do it, right? All right. So you're seeing that deep blue color? Uh, that's letting us know that it's hitting on methamphetamine. Now, we're going to take it to a secure location for further extraction of the narcotics. OFFICER Well, there go the bricks. OFFICER PEREZ There could be more, uh, to, uh, the rest of the items inside the box, so our guys are cutting into other pieces of the, uh, machinery that was shipped in the same box. And, uh, hopefully, we find something there as well. OFFICER HALLADAY Where are you coming from today? TRAVELER Japan. OFFICER HALLADAY Japan? TRAVELER Yup. OFFICER HALLADAY All right. Purpose of the trip? TRAVELER To see family. OFFICER HALLADAY All right. How much money, cash, currency? TRAVELER A little bit. TRAVELER Not much. OFFICER HALLADAY How much is, how much is a little bit? You're allowed to bring as much into the country as you want. TRAVELER Three, three, three, three hundred dollars. OFFICER HALLADAY Okay. Have a good day. OFFICER HALLADAY Detroit does not only have international borders, such as the bridge and the tunnel. We also have an international airport. We do get a lot of currency seizures coming inbound. And the ATCET team does currency leaving outbound. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI ATCET stands for the Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Team. And we're heading to an outbound flight. It's going to, in Seoul, Korea. It's one that we hit, pretty much, daily for unreported currency. Where are you going? TRAVELER Philippines. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI How much cash are you taking with you? TRAVELER Nine thousand. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI Traveling by yourself? TRAVELER No, my mom. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI Your mom? What's your job? TRAVELER Uh, I don't have one. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI Okay. How much cash are the two of you traveling with? TRAVELER I'm not sure how much she has, but I have, uh, I have $9,500. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI Ninety-five hundred? How much do you have? TRAVELER Less than him. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI Less than him? TRAVELER Yeah. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI What's less than him? Here, go talk to him. Talk to him. It looked like she was waiting for his cue what to say. OFFICER DAVIS You guys can step over here. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI She waited for him to kind of give him, give her the go ahead to answer. OFFICER DAVIS If you are causing or cause the transportation of more than $10,000, it is no problem at all. It's fine. You just have to fill out a form. TRAVELER I have $9,500. OFFICER DAVIS Okay. Just write the total amount of currency you're causing the transportation of, sign, and you'll be on your way. Right where it says, "Total," here. Here. Yes, ma'am. So what I need you to do is present all of the currency that you're causing the transportation of. TRAVELER Right here. OFFICER DAVIS So this is, some people forget sometimes. Do you have any more money anywhere else? I'm gonna go through. TRAVELER No, nothing. OFFICER DAVIS I'm gonna go through all of the bags. So just watch me. I'm gonna verify your money. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN We received information on a residence here in Las Cruces that is supposedly harboring undocumented non-citizens and has been doing so for quite some time now. We're looking for smugglers who are responsible for the flow of undocumented non-citizens into the United States. But we're also looking for the undocumented non-citizens themselves. Because, unfortunately, smuggling organizations, they don't view them as human beings. They view them as a commodity and, um, that's where we try to come in and just getting them into a more safe environment than some of these organizations are keeping them in. The residence is located in a trailer park that's pretty notorious for smuggling activities. Uh, so we're gonna approach the residence and figure out what exactly is going on. I'm just here off of the, uh, side street. AGENT Ten-four. AGENT Okay. AGENT I think everybody's here. AGENT We're gonna roll in. AGENT Here we go. AGENT Come down this way. AGENT You got him? AGENT Yeah. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN How many? AGENT Looks like four. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN At least four. So the agents knocked on the door. There were three individuals located in the entryway. Um, provided agents with consent to come into the residence. And then during the search of the residence, there was one more individual found hiding in the bathroom. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN They admitted that they're here in the country illegally. They're not in possession of any immigration documents that would allow them to remain in the United States legally. Any of them can tell us who owns this place? SUSPECT Uh, one's in the car. AGENT In here. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Somebody's in there? AGENT [speaking Spanish] Raise your hands. AGENT [speaking Spanish] Resident, citizen? SUSPECT No. AGENT He's the. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Caretaker? AGENT Caretaker. AGENT [speaking Spanish] You don't have any documents? SUSPECT No. AGENT [speaking Spanish] Everything you have in the bag. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN We located another one, the fifth one, that was hiding underneath a blanket in the back of this car here. Can you find out who owns this place? AGENT [speaking Spanish] Whose trailer is it? SUSPECT [speaking Spanish] That I don't know. I was just sleeping there. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN He's, uh, most likely the caretaker of this location. They usually try to sleep in different locations than the people that they're smuggling. So he's gonna be taken back to the station, he's going to be interviewed, and we'll try to figure out exactly what his role is in this. And figure out if we can link him to a smuggling scheme, link him to a smuggling organization. AGENT You gonna go inside? SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Yeah. AGENT All right. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN We started going through the house, noticing large amounts of blankets. There's mattresses. Um, this light here doesn't work. Doesn't appear to be electricity in this residence. Back here, they've got some cell phones on the table, wrapped in, uh, aluminum foil. We see these a lot in stash houses. That aluminum foil can prevent, um, any data from going in and out from the phone. These smuggling organizations don't want any information getting out that could lead law enforcement to where the, uh, stash house is. The conditions here is pretty common of what we see. It's poor conditions. It smells pretty bad. Um, it's pretty inhumane, the conditions that they're being expected to survive in. They're gonna be transported back to the Border Patrol station where they're gonna be processed for whatever the appropriate measure is, depending on their citizenship, depending on their criminal history. And then we'll move onto the next house. AGENT Let's do it. OFFICER PEREZ Got it. We're gonna stick a probe and see if we get anything from there. Ooh, all right. So you can see we're getting some powder in there that shouldn't be inside. OFFICER You wanna cut the end off of this? OFFICER There we go. Loaded. OFFICER PEREZ Once we opened it up, we saw that there was another, uh, aluminum package hidden within that cylinder. OFFICER Well, we got this one out. OFFICER PEREZ Now, we're gonna be able to test it. That's a, that's a good amount. So from how it's crystallizer, it's a crystallized substance. I'm thinking it's gotta be meth. Yup. So that's meth again. We're going to get the official weight for all the packages. OFFICER PEREZ 5.45 kilos (12 pounds) of methamphetamine. There's no gimme loads in Miami. They know they're dealing with experienced, motivated officers, so they're gonna make us really work for it. But we don't give up until we get a hundred percent. OFFICER DAVIS Um, and you have some envelopes in here? TRAVELER Uh-huh. And here. OFFICER DAVIS Money inside of here? All right. Give me one second, okay? Can you, can you come over here, real quick, and watch this? May I speak with you over here? TRAVELER Yeah, yeah, yeah. OFFICER DAVIS Okay. First of all, thank you again for your cooperation. TRAVELER Of course. OFFICER DAVIS So listen, this is what I do a lot. Where did the money that was presented today, where did all of that money come from? TRAVELER Uh, from me. OFFICER DAVIS So it's, all of the money came from you? TRAVELER Yes. OFFICER DAVIS Okay. And what about your mom? TRAVELER I don't know what she bring. TRAVELER I don't know. OFFICER DAVIS So the reason why I ask you this, you had that bookbag on. TRAVELER Uh-hmm. OFFICER DAVIS When you had the money in a bag in that purse. TRAVELER In her purse? OFFICER DAVIS You had the, you was carrying the money. TRAVELER No, I carried her purse. OFFICER DAVIS You carrying it. TRAVELER Yeah, her purse. OFFICER DAVIS So, but who, whose money was that? TRAVELER On her purse, it's hers. OFFICER DAVIS Okay. TRAVELER In my wallet, it's mine. OFFICER DAVIS Excuse me. Hello, ma'am. How are you doing? Did your son give you any of this money? TRAVELER I don't hold any money, because I'm old. TRAVELER So, my son is holding all of that money. OFFICER DAVIS So he's holding on. TRAVELER Yeah. OFFICER DAVIS So he's holding all the money? TRAVELER Yeah. OFFICER DAVIS I don't even know how much it is. But I'm gonna just verify that there's no more currency inside of here. More money. [COMMERCIAL BREAK] OFFICER DAVIS More money discovered. Additional currency. TRAVELER Oh, this one have, oh, yes. OFFICER DAVIS Hold up. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. TRAVELER Hold on, let me check. OFFICER DAVIS Ma'am. Ma'am. Ma'am. Relax, okay? OFFICER DAVIS They all have the same rubber bands. What that shows me is that this money comes from one source. Ninety-five and some change here. Okay. I'm gonna count this money, here, that was discovered. OFFICER DAVIS Eleven. OFFICER DAVIS Five in each one. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI The currency reporting requirements, inbound and outbound, you can take as much currency as you like. There's no limit. But if it's over $10,000, you have to report it, you fill out a form. No taxes, no penalties. And you just, you're on your way. OFFICER DAVIS Today, you guys did not present all your currency and you failed to properly report. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI When you take money out of the country, you know, we don't know what it's for. So it's important to, to track the currency for legitimate purposes. And more times than not, it does lead to a seizure, 'cause the violation is there. OFFICER DAVIS The next move is we're gonna get the money count. Sir, I need you to place all of your bags on this bag belt here. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI All right. What's your job? TRAVELER I play poker. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI You play poker? You're a professional poker player? TRAVELER Mini. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI Where do you play? TRAVELER L.A. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI L.A.? OFFICER DAVIS He reported 9,500 and she reported $2,300. OFFICER DAVIS The total was $22,865. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI The money is being seized today. If you do not contact them within thirty days, your money's considered forfeited. So you have to either call them, fax them, or email them. And then they're gonna tell you what you need to do to possibly get your money back. OFFICER DAVIS We do what we do because you don't know where that money is coming from. OFFICER DAVIS It could be illicit, it could be for terrorism, it could be for anything that is negative against, you know, the U.S. So that's why we here to try to enforce that law. SUPERVISORY OFFICER LASKOWSKI Yeah. The airline's right there. They'll walk you over there. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN It's common to hit multiple locations in the same day. It's been a very busy week. And as a result, we received a lot of information. So now, we're following up and we're going to do a knock and talk here, see if we can speak to the individuals inside and conduct a quick investigation as to whether or not the information we have is legitimate. AGENT We'll do the one that has the sign on the trailer. AGENT And then the second one is right here where the blue truck is. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN So they got information on both of these. You want to do them at the same time or? AGENT That's what I was gonna ask you. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Yeah? Okay. AGENT Here we go. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN I don't know if anybody's even answering. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN We'll run the plate. AGENT Hey! Come out! AGENT [speaking Spanish] Police! AGENT [speaking Spanish] Come outside! AGENT Hey, we got more coming. We got more coming. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN So you got here, you knocked on the door. AGENT Yeah, they came and opened the door. AGENT As soon as we opened, he was like. AGENT "You know, we've been here. We don't, we don't have any food. No one's taking care of us." AGENT This one's smaller for the amount of people. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Yeah. AGENT There's one bed. AGENT One. One bed. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Okay. You get a total number? AGENT Thirty-six. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Thirty-six. You know how long they've been here? AGENT This kid was saying that everybody's different times. AGENT Some of them weeks. Some of them days. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Okay. It's a very small living space for thirty-six people to be in. Most likely people sleeping on the floors and, um, just not adequate living conditions. Here comes the transports. AGENT This way. Over here. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN This amount of people, it's pretty common that it was probably multiple trips, multiple drivers, multiple vehicles dropping off at separate times, separate dates. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN The smugglers took away all of their phones, so they have no way of contacting anybody. AGENT Just follow them. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN In addition to the humanitarian issue and the safety and health of these individuals, we do want to focus on the criminal investigation to see if we can identify who's responsible for this. At this point in time, we don't believe that that individual is here. They're probably living at a separate location. We are gonna take them all back to the station, conduct interviews, see if we can tie these two smuggling events, and maybe some outstanding smugglers working for these smuggling organizations that now we can target. AGENT You guys are the last three? SUSPECT Yes. SPECIAL AGENT RYAN Today was definitely productive. We got here as a result of work that's already been done. And after today, we're gonna do even more work to try to lead us to the next stash house, or lead us to the next individual who's responsible for smuggling people in.
