ANNOUNCER CHIEF_MATLIN EMS_is_on_its HSI_is_gonna_get MAN OFCBONO OFCCONTINO OFCPUPO OFCRIMOLA OFCSILVA OFCVANACORE OFC_BONO OFFICER OFFICER_MILLER OFFICER_SABLAN PASSENGER POLICE_OFFICER SUPERVISORY_OFCRAIO SUPERVISOR_YOLANDAI SUPHUMES SUSPECT TRAVELER WOMAN OFCSILVA Right now we are waiting for a flight from Cali, Colombia. OFCRIMOLA This particular flight has a passenger of interest because he's frequently traveling to Colombia. We have a unit that analyzes flights before they arrive. They sent us a picture from his passport application and that's what we're gonna use to try to pinpoint this individual coming off the flight. CHIEF MATLIN Passports out folks and line up by an officer. OFCRIMOLA Okay. speaking foreign language When did you buy your ticket? PASSENGER speaking foreign language In January, I believe. OFCRIMOLA speaking foreign language Okay. Is this the only luggage you have? PASSENGER speaking foreign language Yes, the only one. OFCRIMOLA Colombia's always been at the top when it comes down to cocaine distribution. So, whenever we see passengers traveling back and forth to Colombia we like to talk to them a little bit more to verify why they're going abroad so much. CHIEF MATLIN Passports out, please. Line up in front of any officer. OFCRIMOLA How you doing? Where are you going, ma'am? PASSENGER San Francisco. OFCRIMOLA That's this guy right here. CHIEF MATLIN Which one is it? OFCRIMOLA The guy tattooed over there. CHIEF MATLIN That guy. CHIEF MATLIN Everybody, passports out. OFCRIMOLA Passport please. OFFICER Step over to the side please. CHIEF MATLIN God, he doesn't look like him at all. CHIEF MATLIN Gold teeth and dyed his hair and he doesn't look like the surfer boy anymore. So, the officer's have located the person that we were curious about. OFCRIMOLA He won't know we're specifically looking into his trip because we're gonna be stopping multiple passengers coming on the flight. OFFICER speaking foreign language Please, stand over here. CHIEF MATLIN From here we're gonna take them to passport control then downstairs to baggage, pick up any checked-in luggage he may have. OFFICER This way please. CHIEF MATLIN And then begin the search. ANNOUNCER All areas in inaudible building are inaudible OFCBONO Everybody seems to like this one. Right now, we're waiting for a plane to arrive from the Dominican Republic. OFCBONO We have a person of interest on that flight. We will be ID'ing her as she steps out of the jetway. Well, here we go. Have your passports out, please. OFCVANACORE Thank you. OFCBONO Right there. OFFICER Here? OFFICER Okay. Are you traveling alone? WOMAN Yeah. OFFICER All right. OFFICER Do you have any bags? WOMAN No, I just. WOMAN Ouch. OFFICER Oh! WOMAN The carry on, it's under there. WOMAN So no. OFFICER Okay. When she came off the plane, the passenger kind of bumped her right leg. She starts acting like something was hurting her. But the brace, I noticed, was in her left leg. That was kind of off. Thank you so much. WOMAN Thank you. OFFICER Uh-hmm. OFCBONO You want me to go or do you want to go? OFFICER You go. OFCBONO We'll follow her through immigration and we will see what her story is. We're going to look into her reason for travel, why she was there, where she's going when she's here, who she's meeting, just to see if there's a connection. ANNOUNCER All VR representatives inaudible to Passport Control inaudible. OFCVANACORE She is definitely peeking around. POLICE OFFICER Is she? OFCVANACORE Yeah, she's looking. OFFICER She don't have any bags. OFCBONO See, I like that right there. There's no bags. That just raises so many red flags to me. I'm gonna fall back. I'll wait over there, all right? This way it doesn't feel like we're ganging up on her. CHIEF MATLIN The team trains constantly on techniques and behavior and there's certain signs and signals that people give off that they're definitely looking for. OFCRIMOLA People tend to have certain movements that they do when they're nervous, when they're trying to hide something. He has his head on a swivel. Very, very attentive to what's going on. CHIEF MATLIN Yeah, he's fidgety. Look at him. OFFICER Gentlemen, let's go please. OFCRIMOLA He's walking a little bit weird. Not a relaxed behavior. Not a relaxed way of walking. OFFICER How long were you in Colombia this time? SUSPECT This time? OFFICER Yeah. SUSPECT Three weeks. SUSPECT To see my wife. OFFICER How long have you been involved with your wife? SUSPECT Um, a year and a half. OFCRIMOLA His story's not making much sense. He's saying he went down to Colombia to visit his wife for three weeks but we don't believe he's married. OFFICER What do you do to make money? SUSPECT I used to be in the music industry, but… SUSPECT Now I do real estate. OFFICER Now you do real estate? SUSPECT Yeah. OFCRIMOLA People lie for all sorts of reasons. Maybe they don't want us to find out the true reason for the trip but it's our job to verify the reason why they're lying or what they're trying to hide. SUPHUMES There are multiple ways that smugglers get drugs into the United States. SUPHUMES They have it concealed in a luggage, on their body, or inside their body. When we're talking about inside their body that mean they usually wrap it in some type of condom, they usually conceal it in their rectal cavity. He keeps crossing his leg. He had his hand behind his back, leaning on the table. So, I've been doing this for 21 years and the body does not lie. ANNOUNCER inaudible number three. OFCVANACORE Good morning, ma'am. Passport. WOMAN Oh, hey. OFCVANACORE How are you today? WOMAN Fine. I gotta go to the bathroom. WOMAN I'm just looking for the bathroom. OFCVANACORE Okay, no problem. Where are you coming from today? WOMAN Santo Domingo. OFCVANACORE Okay. Just follow me this way. You have all your bags with you? WOMAN Yeah, I just got a carry on. WOMAN Just got a carry on. OFCVANACORE Okay. She has a carry on. OFFICER All right. You want me to check while you question? OFCVANACORE Uh, yeah, that's fine. This is your bag, correct? WOMAN Yes. OFCBONO Like your glasses. WOMAN Thank you. OFCBONO Are they prescription? WOMAN They're about to be. OFCBONO Are they? WOMAN I got 'em off the stand. OFCBONO They're so big, it looks like you're gonna need windshield wipers on 'em if you ever go out in the rain, right? WOMAN They're high fashion, though. OFCBONO They are, right? OFFICER Okay, ma'am. Everything's yours? WOMAN Yup. OFFICER You packed it yourself? WOMAN Yup. OFFICER Okay. OFCVANACORE Any food, alcohol, tobacco? WOMAN I might have some M&M's in there. WOMAN I might or I might have left them. WOMAN I think I left them. OFFICER Okay. WOMAN Oh! WOMAN There they are! OFCVANACORE What was the purpose of your trip? WOMAN I went to my doctor. WOMAN To get my injection in my knee. OFCVANACORE What are the injections for? WOMAN I have… WOMAN Arthritis in my knee… WOMAN And it's a hell of a lot cheaper over there than over here. OFCBONO What kinda shot did you get? Did they tell you? WOMAN It's called the, um… WOMAN Oh my God. WOMAN It just slipped my mind. I know the name of it. WOMAN But it just slipped my mind. OFCBONO And I heard you mention to the officer that it's cheaper down there? So then, what insurance did you use to go down to the Dominican Republic to get your knee looked at? WOMAN I didn't use insurance. WOMAN I go to the Dominican Republic because it's cheaper. OFCBONO All right, all right. Let's stop right there for a minute. You paid out of pocket for your? WOMAN Yeah. OFCBONO Now why would you do that? WOMAN Because it's cheaper. OFCBONO How could it possibly be cheaper? Did you even bother to check to see if a cortisone shot is covered by your insurance here? WOMAN I have. OFCBONO I can guarantee that a cortisone shot is going to be covered by insurance, a hundred percent. We're skeptical, okay? In general, a cortisone shot is very cheap. There is no reason to go down to the Dominican Republic for one. How much did you pay for your airfare to travel down to the Dominican Republic? WOMAN I didn't pay for my airfare. OFCBONO Who paid for your airfare? WOMAN My sugar daddy that's over there. OFCVANACORE How long have you been with him? WOMAN Um. WOMAN Six months, since I've been going. OFCVANACORE So you met him in Dominican Republic, or you met him here? WOMAN In Dominican Republic. OFCVANACORE Has he ever been to the United States? WOMAN No. OFCVANACORE So, he paid for your ticket? WOMAN Yes. OFCBONO It just doesn't, it just makes no sense, so. WOMAN I feel like he's not believing anything that I'm saying. OFCVANACORE We're just trying to get your story straight, you understand? Okay. We're just gonna put your stuff back in your bag, okay? And then we're gonna ask you a few more questions in the back. OFCBONO We're not here to delve into somebody's personal life, but we feel right now that the sugar daddy had her go down there for another reason. OFCVANACORE Are you able to stand up? WOMAN For a hot second, yeah. OFCBONO The passenger, her story was that she claimed to have gone down to the Dominican Republic for treatment on her knee. It certainly seems that her story is fabricated. OFCVANACORE You wanna P.D. her first? OFCBONO She will be brought into a private room for a pat down. OFCVANACORE So what we're gonna-- WOMAN I have to pee so bad. WOMAN Yeah, it's okay. You're not. OFCVANACORE Okay. Just take the wheelchair. Yeah, that's fine. You can push it all the way. WOMAN I can't go to the bathroom? WOMAN Why is it a problem with me going to the bathroom? OFFICER There's no problem. OFCBONO She's requesting to use the ladies room. A passenger can attempt to smuggle narcotics into the United States on the body or in the body. OFFICER We gotta take her to the bathroom, but we have to, um. OFCVANACORE I'll go inside with her, that's fine. But, please. Thank you. OFCBONO So, we prep the ladies room to prevent anything that might be inside, if she did insert anything to be flushed down the toilet. WOMAN Can I ask you a question? OFCVANACORE Uh-hmm. WOMAN Uh-hmm. WOMAN Is this routine? What is going on? OFCVANACORE Yeah, we'll take you into the room and we'll talk. Just give him a second. OFFICER Don't flush the toilet. Just pee right there. WOMAN I'm so nervous now, what? OFFICER Don't be nervous. OFCVANACORE Don't be nervous. OFFICER Don't be nervous. OFCVANACORE Take your time. OFFICER SABLAN Come on over, ma'am. Are you traveling by yourself today? TRAVELER Yes. OFFICER SABLAN Where are you coming from today? TRAVELER I came to check out how much it would be. TRAVELER To get my tooth fixed, 'cause I broke my back tooth. OFFICER SABLAN And how long were you down at the dentist for? TRAVELER I ended up, 'cause I lost my ID, I was stuck down there last night. OFFICER SABLAN Okay. TRAVELER I stayed in a hotel, but that was it. OFFICER SABLAN I got you. How much money are you traveling with today? TRAVELER I have maybe $43. OFFICER SABLAN All right, what do you do for a living? TRAVELER Right now, I'm unemployed. OFFICER SABLAN Her hands were crossed. OFFICER SABLAN She seemed a little timid, a little scared. Not like the typical traveler that comes through. All right. Follow me to the back. She went down to see the dentist, she stated she was unemployed, she has $40 on her but she stayed overnight in a hotel. And not only that, she provided no I.D., so her story's pretty fishy and we referred her to secondary. Her name's in the system, no I.D. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA No I.D.? OFFICER SABLAN Yeah. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Okay. If you can just take a seat for me. I'm just gonna check your bag. Are you bringing any drugs, narcotics, weapons? Are you bringing anything for anyone? Have you crossed here before? TRAVELER Once. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA How long ago was that? TRAVELER A few years ago. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA A few years ago? TRAVELER Yeah, I try not to come down here. TRAVELER Unless I have an actual need to. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Uh-huh. How much… TRAVELER I came 'cause I broke the crown off my back tooth. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Tooth fixed? Uh-huh. TRAVELER It hurts so bad. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Oh, really? So then you didn't get any work done? TRAVELER No, I just came to see how much it was going to be. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA How'd you know which dentist to go to? TRAVELER I didn't. I just looked it up. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA You just looked it up? Okay. TRAVELER There was one right outside the port. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA And what hotel did you stay at? TRAVELER At the Hotel Olivia. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Olivia? And how much was it there a night? TRAVELER It was, like, $38, $49, $39. Something like that. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Okay. And you said you don't work right now? When was the last time you worked? TRAVELER It was 2017. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA 2017? So it's been awhile. TRAVELER Yeah. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA She has a lot of makeup stuff. Kind of doesn't make sense if you're coming for dental work. Did you meet with anyone in Mexico? Did you do anything else besides go to the dentist to get an estimate on your back tooth? TRAVELER No. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Because you wouldn't bring all this stuff, just to go to the dentist. OFFICER Hi, excuse me. Let me see your passport, please. OFFICER speaking foreign language Do you speak English? PASSENGER speaking foreign language No, Spanish. OFFICER Okay. OFFICER Right this way. OFFICER Place your luggage on the table. OFFICER Grab a seat on the bench. CHIEF MATLIN From the initial time that we encountered this particular individual, he exhibited some inconsistencies in his story. Physical pat down is negative. He doesn't have anything on his body. So, we're gonna talk about the real reasons for his trip. Try to get some more information out of him to either make sense of the story or to push for a medical examination at the hospital for a possible internal. OFFICER How long were you in Colombia this time? CHIEF MATLIN This is kind of the real true art form of what we do. The officers are very good at this. And some of these will go on for quite a long time to the point that they'll never tell you. OFFICER Who do you work for? OFFICER What do you do to make money? SUPHUMES The officer's pretty much telling him that they suspect that he had narcotics and he denied it and denied it. OFFICER He's playing dumb. CHIEF MATLIN We have enough at this point now to make us believe he may be an internal smuggler of narcotics and now we're gonna take the subject to the hospital. The medical staff will perform an x-ray to determine whether the individual has something inside of their body or in one of their cavities. OFFICER He's like "If you guys are going to take me, take me." OFFICER "You guys know the deal, so." CHIEF MATLIN Then let's take him. SUSPECT Hold on a minute. SUSPECT Can I pee? OFFICER All right, let's go. OFFICER All right, go back to the room. CHIEF MATLIN You know, some people, I guess they're hoping we'll let our guard down long enough for them to just pass it out and kick it under the table kind of thing. Obviously, this is not our first day here. The officers are very good at what we do and they kept a close eye on him as we always do. CHIEF MATLIN Let's do this. OFFICER Watch your head. CHIEF MATLIN This is the ultimate version of hide and go seek, you know, with high stakes. So, if he gets caught everybody knows that narcotics are illegal in this country. They know the stance that the United States takes on smugglers. It's a serious consequence to bring cocaine, heroin, whatever this may be into the United States. OFCBONO She didn't? SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO No, it's dry. OFCBONO Unless they flushed it. I didn't hear it. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO No, the bag's in here. OFCBONO It's still the way it is? SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Yeah, it's dry. OFCBONO All right. OFFICER Initially when she said she had to pee, she was acting like she couldn't hold it. So, she sits down on the toilet and we waited, we waited, we waited, and she did not pee. So, that's when the little spidey senses started kicking in. Are you okay? WOMAN I'm just, I'm, like, scared to pee right now. Like. OFFICER It's all right. OFFICER Then why did you ask to pee? WOMAN Because this has never happened to me before. WOMAN This is making me so nervous right now. OFCVANACORE Okay. No need to be nervous. We're just gonna pat you down. OFFICER Okay? You don't have to be nervous. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO I hear sobbing. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO She doesn't understand why she's. OFCBONO She's crying? OFFICER She passed out. OFCBONO Oh, no! SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Call 911. MAN inaudible OFCBONO She passed out. Call 911, get EMS here, please. Get them into the pat down room. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Keep your eyes open. OFFICER Well, we get to the pat down, we're, like, "Okay, just lift your hands up and we will pat you down like that." One of the officers got to touch here in her right breast. That's when she just fell. OFCBONO EMS is on its way. OFFICER She slowly fell, so she first sat down, and then fell back, so it was very Hollywood-ish. You gotta keep talking. We have to know that you're okay. OFCBONO First, we wanted to make sure that nothing was really wrong with her and she was not in really a lot of pain. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO You know what day of the week it is? WOMAN Friday. OFCBONO She knew she had been caught in a lie, and she realized that, "This is not gonna work." SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO What medications do you take? What are these medications for? WOMAN High blood pressure and diabetes. WOMAN I'm feeling light-headed. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Okay. Well, we'll have the EMT. They're gonna come here and take a look at you, but just so you know, going to the hospital, you're not gonna circumvent this inspection. The inspection will continue in the hospital. We'll escort you to the hospital, and we'll finish the inspection, and then you'll be released. WOMAN Okay. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO So, you sure you wanna go to the hospital, right? WOMAN Yeah. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO I don't know why she thinks that going to the hospital could save her. MAN Yeah. OFCBONO No matter what happens here, she's not going to avoid this Customs inspection being taken to completion. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO All right, why don't you sit up? The officer will help you sit up. OFFICER Go ahead. One, two. WOMAN Oh! OFFICER Why don't you lean up against the wall? Yeah, into her arms, so. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Just tell us what you're hiding, I'll help you out. You need to cooperate. That's what I told you from the beginning. Cooperate. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Let's stop with the fainting. We know it's there. WOMAN It's not. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA So, you said you came down here last night? TRAVELER Yeah. TRAVELER I was supposed to just be here for a couple hours… TRAVELER But then I lost my I.D. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Uh-huh. TRAVELER So I ended up getting a hotel for the night. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA I'll be right with you, sir. TRAVELER My mask? OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Yeah, you can have your mask. TRAVELER I've had COVID, like, about 10 times already. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Ten times? TRAVELER Yeah. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA You're unstoppable now, huh? TRAVELER Yeah. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Yeah? OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA All right. Just give us one minute real quick. And what time do you think you went to the dentist? TRAVELER Um, maybe, about two hours ago. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Maybe two hours? There has to be another reason why she went down here. Something isn't adding up here. Supervisor Yolandai? I gotta talk to you in the back. I just wanted to request a pat down on a female. She just told me she was going to the dentist today but then she told me she stayed over the night last night but she didn't get no work done. SUPERVISOR YOLANDAI Okay. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA So, can we get two females? OFFICER MILLER Can you come over here with us? I was called in to do a pat down on a female traveler. OFFICER MILLER There has been an increase in body carriers, specifically females recruited by the cartel. Maybe they're in an unfortunate financial situation or whatever the case may be. They are vulnerable to become drug mules. OFFICER MILLER Follow me. OFCPUPO How are you? Let me see your passport. Good morning! OFCRIMOLA You know, some days you come across weird stories. Oh, so you're coming here for the first time to live? MAN That's right. OFCRIMOLA But every time I feel like I've seen it all, I come across something completely different. OFCPUPO speaking Spanish Okay, let's go check your bags. OFCRIMOLA So you were in Bogotá? MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA How long were you down there for? MAN Two weeks. Yes. OFCRIMOLA You speak Spanish? MAN Yes. Yes. OFCRIMOLA speaking Spanish Better at Spanish? MAN No, sorry, I don't speak Spanish. MAN Only a few words, but. MAN Yeah, not that good. OFCRIMOLA Okay. And where did you stay while you were down there? MAN A hotel. MAN In a hotel. OFCRIMOLA Okay. What hotel? MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA What hotel? MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA What do you do for work? MAN Well, I'm a freelance journalist. OFCRIMOLA Journalist? You're a little bit nervous, that's why I stopped you. Why are you so nervous? MAN Yeah. I slept very little last night… MAN So I'm not, I'm not feeling very sharp now. OFCRIMOLA Okay. Okay, okay, okay. The passenger stood out. He's sweating. Could be nervous for multiple reasons, possibly the language barrier, or maybe what he went to go do down in Colombia. Why Colombia? MAN Mainly friends and such. OFCRIMOLA Friends? MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA How did you meet your friends in Colombia? MAN I have met some interesting people on the internet. OFCRIMOLA Through the internet? MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA So, what? Girls? MAN Well, a lady. OFCRIMOLA Is she your girlfriend? What is she? MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA And how did you meet her? On what website? MAN Facebook. OFCRIMOLA Facebook? MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA So, let me ask you a question. So you met her on, like, a sex chat? MAN What? OFCRIMOLA Your girlfriend? MAN No. OFCRIMOLA You sure? MAN Yes, I am. OFCRIMOLA I'm giving you the opportunity to be honest with me. All right. What is that? MAN Some sort of. OFCRIMOLA It's all right. Calm down. Just relax. MAN Yes, I try. MAN It's plastic, basically. OFCRIMOLA Yeah, but for what? MAN A sheet, a sheet. OFCRIMOLA A sheet? What does that do? Why, why would you put that on the bed? MAN No, not to. MAN Mess the bed. MAN To keep the bed clean. OFCPUPO This is yours, too? MAN Yes. OFCPUPO speaking Spanish Look. OFCPUPO speaking Spanish Here. OFCRIMOLA Oh, wow! So, what is this for? This guy had a lot of sex toys, masks, some weird black bag. OFCRIMOLA And says it's to be clean. Yeah, you go prepared, huh? So you went over there for sex? MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA Only sex. MAN Yes. OFCRIMOLA I mean, I don't wear this, you know what I'm saying? MAN Yes, yes, yes. OFCRIMOLA So why'd you take the laptop to Colombia? MAN For writing… MAN And to have a connection with home, as well. OFCPUPO We do encounter a lot of cases of individuals who traveled specifically to Colombia for sex tourism. Even though it is legal and regulated, that does not deter our CBP officers from inspecting individuals and making sure that there's no type of sex trafficking, no type of child pornography involved in the acts that they're going to do to Colombia. OFCRIMOLA You're making me a little bit nervous, man. When I have passengers that get me nervous, I have to verify what they were doing abroad. MAN Oh, please be careful. OFCRIMOLA What? What is this? What do you have in here? MAN Hard disks. OFCRIMOLA Why are you traveling with hard drives? MAN I… MAN Save my pictures in two places. MAN And so I have two hard drives. OFCRIMOLA You got a lot of pictures? You took a lot of pictures? MAN There are some pictures, yes. OFCRIMOLA All right. I'm gonna check the pictures in a little bit, okay? We have the authority to check every travel passenger's electronics. Sometimes you get messages, pictures, so you kinda have more of an idea of what kinda passenger we have. Listen, man, you need to calm down, okay? I have to check everything, because you admitted to me that you went over there for sex tourism. So, now, am I gonna find anything that is questionable? Of young people? MAN Oh. OFCRIMOLA Is there? MAN There are no sexual material about kids. OFCRIMOLA No kids? MAN No. No. OFCRIMOLA Sometimes it takes more digging through stuff to kinda get a whole grasp of, and understanding of this trip. I'm gonna take his laptop, take all his electronic devices and find out the truth. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO You sure there's nothing inside your body? 'Cause at this point, your health is my number one concern. If it's in there, you can die from it if it opens up. It happens all the time. I had someone die on me last week. So, tell me now, is there anything inside your vagina? WOMAN Yeah. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Listen to me. WOMAN Listen, he made me do it! SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Listen to me. Listen. All right, so what did he make you do? WOMAN He made me bring this stuff. WOMAN He said he was gonna kill me if I didn't do it. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Okay. So, I'm gonna have you stand up. I'm gonna take those handcuffs off, and if you can remove it, remove it. If not, we will take you to a medical facility. Let's get this outta your body 'cause it's dangerous. They're trying to see if she can remove it herself, just 'cause her blood pressure's high. She's diabetic. OFCBONO The two female officers stood her back up, and, sure enough, on her body was three or four balloons of cocaine. She had them in her bra and she also admitted to having at least two in her vagina. Oh, you can smell it. That stuff is strong. Ooh! Boom! Cocaine hydrochloride, yeah. Very nice job. OFCVANACORE She still has one inside. She can't take it out. OFCBONO Okay. She was only able to extract one of the balloons. She admits to having at least one more in there. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO You're gonna go to the hospital and they're gonna do an X-ray. OFCBONO The other balloon or balloons that remain inside her will be extracted when we get to the hospital. OFCRIMOLA All right, so I'm gonna take these hard drives too, all right? You have the same pictures here? MAN No, there are more. OFCRIMOLA So, what kind of material am I gonna find? Is there gonna be anything bad? MAN No. OFCRIMOLA No? Okay. Unlock the computer. OFCPUPO For us, there's a fine line between sex tourism and child pornography. OFCRIMOLA This computer is so jam-packed with stuff that it's going slow. OFCPUPO Oftentimes, these people go to other countries to pursue sex tourism, but pursue it with somebody who's of a younger age. OFCRIMOLA I need a good amount of time to check through all this. OFCRIMOLA I need a good amount of time. 'Cause he's got so much and it's in a different language. Actually, I might ask him to see if he can change it to English. Can you change the language to English? It would make it so much easier for me if you just do that. I guarantee you he has a file somewhere though. This guy's a smart dude. Oh, wow! What is that? How many women did you have relations with on this trip? MAN One. OFCRIMOLA One? I see a lot of pictures of a lot of different women. These are more graphic pictures. We're gonna take it to enforcement. We're gonna go to another room, all right? Just follow her. bleep OFCRIMOLA He's got so much that it's like. OFCRIMOLA We'll just go one by one. OFCPUPO Uh-hmm. And then like these chicks like they kiss. Go back. OFCRIMOLA This one? OFCPUPO Hmm, yeah. He has pictures here where he, like, has her, like, hold up her ID. OFCRIMOLA Yeah, how old she is. OFCPUPO No, she's not young. OFCPUPO But no kids or nothing. OFCRIMOLA No, no. Nothing. OFCRIMOLA I mean, I have yet to find anything that's, like, technically illegal. He had a lot of pictures of women, I would say, in their 20's, 30's, so, putting everything together, looking at the pictures on his phone, we came to the conclusion that it wasn't child pornography what he was into. I found nothing. You were good to go. Uh-huh? OFCPUPO We're not the moral police. OFCPUPO We don't care about people's personal lives, as long as they don't intervene with our job. And our job is to stop any type of narcotic, any type of terrorism, any type of child pornography, anything illegal that may come into the United States. OFCRIMOLA Thank you for being patient. OFCBONO This lady needs medical attention. She was smuggling cocaine. She has admitted to having a balloon of cocaine inside of her, which, if burst, could be life-threatening. All right, so you do know that one of you, who is obviously a female, is gonna have to go in the room. OFCVANACORE Uh-hmm. OFCBONO Because once the narcotics comes out, cannot be handled by anyone other than us. OFCVANACORE Yes. OFCBONO All right. Go on. I'll be right there. As of right now, at this very moment, she is going in for a CAT scan. OFCBONO It has to be determined where it is and then the doctors have to figure out how to get it out. In the grand scheme of things, we certainly don't want anybody to get hurt. She is on a clock if something is packed poorly, so, it's, it's imperative that it comes out. OFFICER MILLER I felt an anomaly… OFFICER MILLER In her vaginal area. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Loaded? OFFICER MILLER Pretty sure. OFFICER MILLER She claimed it was a tampon. OFFICER MILLER But she's very upset. OFFICER MILLER I asked her if she was willing if I got her a pad to remove the tampon and then she just got very scared, very distraught. And from there, she admitted that it was not a tampon. OFFICER And did she pull it out or what happened? OFFICER She did. OFFICER MILLER She removed it herself and admitted that it was narcotics. This is a common trend we have been seeing with female travelers. OFFICER The gentleman in the black shirt is her guide. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA The guy is with her? Okay, 10-4. With the red shoes? OFFICER Yes. So I asked her if she thought. OFFICER That he was bringing anything across and she said, "No." OFFICER But he knows about it. He's the guide. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Okay. Within minutes after she came in, another individual male came in. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA She has some kind of connections with that individual. OFFICER So we're gonna take her, so she doesn't have to come back in here. OFFICER We'll hold on to that guy. OFFICER Yeah. OFFICER MILLER inaudible you're okay. Take a deep breath. Just hang on. TRAVELER What's gonna happen? OFFICER MILLER We're going to have an agent come and talk to you. OFFICER MILLER And they will discuss the process with you, okay? TRAVELER Am I, like, going to prison? OFFICER MILLER I can't explain that to you. OFFICER MILLER Just sit down and hang out for a little bit, okay? SUPHUMES He just pooped it out. CHIEF MATLIN You guys tested it? All right. Perfect. Positive for cocaine. Okay, let us know when you're clear to come back with the doctors to get the medical release and then we'll get HSI on the way. All right. Thank you. So, they just informed me that the doctor took an x-ray. CHIEF MATLIN Was about to interpret the x-ray with the radiologist and then the subject passed the object that we, the, the doctor felt it in there. SUPHUMES Well, it appears that it's wrapped up in a condom. Okay, zero it out. SUPHUMES Pure cocaine coming from Colombia. Cut it three times, it's about $28,000. SUPHUMES That's a lot of money for that little small amount of cocaine. And you're making a trip every month, so that adds up. The street value on that is a lot. CHIEF MATLIN Once he comes back, we'll place the subject under arrest and then turn him over to HSI. They'll conduct an interview and they'll decide which charges and sections of law they're going to apply to this particular case and then they'll book him into the federal detention facility. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA Let's see if I can get one out. There we go. I'm taking a sample pill that I'm gonna crush up. Put some solution in there. That solution is gonna dissolve it and help us get our results with this little test strip. So, what we're looking here on this is to see if this watermark creates a red line which is positive for fentanyl. There you go. Positive for fentanyl. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA So this is the final weight, 37.7 grams (1 ounce). Now we're gonna take the fentanyl pills to the storage vault that we have. OFFICER I'm gonna have you step out here. OFFICER We are gonna take your fingerprints, okay? OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA HSI is gonna get contacted, an HSI agent's gonna come and interview the individual smuggling these narcotics. OFFICER Let's start with your left four fingers. TRAVELER Am I under arrest? That's what I want to know. TRAVELER If I'm under arrest then you can go ahead and touch me. TRAVELER But if I'm not. OFFICER You're detained. TRAVELER But why am I being detained? That's what I want to know. OFFICER Because an agent needs to talk to you. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA He's gonna be interviewed as well. He's gonna be detained. OFFICER CEVALLOS-CADENA We're gonna question him because she has some kind of connections with that individual. Those gentlemen, they prey on females, single mothers that are really hurting for money, not really working at this time, and persuades them, try to make a few bucks. But unfortunately, she got busted today, and fortunately we got some drugs off the streets. OFFICER All right, we're good. OFFICER I'm going to have you go back into the cell. SUPERVISORY OFCRAIO Just bring her into the P.D. room area and we'll get a wheelchair. OFCBONO The passenger is okay. OFCBONO There was no side effects or no lasting damage. She was released into our custody to be brought back here to Terminal Four and be turned over to HSI. OFCCONTINO Paperwork's good and I brought an extra copy. OFFICER Beautiful. How you doin', all right? Long day? OFC BONO She has admitted she had done this a few times prior. She has to go through our judicial system now, and I'm sure she's going to learn a valuable lesson and move on from this and learn from it. SUPHUMES Okay. So you'll be here in probably, like, three to five minutes? CHIEF MATLIN The doctor medically cleared the suspect. CHIEF MATLIN Once he comes back we'll fill out our paperwork as far as turning over chain of custody forms and evidence. With his circumstances he can certainly be in jail for quite a few years. SUPHUMES Even though he was caught smuggling cocaine, this guy seem like he has some type of opioid addiction. He stated to the officers that he takes oxycodone on a daily basis. Can you sit up? You have to sit up. OFFICER He can't move on his own. He can't move on his own. SUPHUMES What he's going through now is the oxycodone withdrawal. OFFICER How you feeling right now? SUPHUMES When we encountered him, he was walking and he was coherent and he was speaking normally. Now, he's like, the worst condition that you could see a person. I, you know, have empathy for any person going through that. But, as an officer, it's our job to make sure we enforce the laws. SUPHUMES You know, anyone that comes into the United States who's attempting to break the law by smuggling is gonna get arrested. CHIEF MATLIN For us, this is what it's all about. To catch people who are smuggling narcotics into the U.S. is exactly why we sign up to do this job on this team. SUPHUMES Today is a good day for us to get this off the street, save a lot of lives.
