Annie proceeds to clean and stops to look at the indoor pool where there are 2 used wine glasses sitting on the other side. With a shrug, Annie moves on. Moments later Annie is cleaning dishes at the sink. Some time later Annie removes her latex gloves and wipes her brow looking exhausted. She then walks over to the table with the water and fills the glass. She takes a long drink, parched. Setting it down. She then picks up the note and studies it. Something about the hand writing... A few moments later after a short break we find Annie cleaning the pool doors. She begins filling the dishwasher with the other dirty dishes. Suddenly she begins to waver. She tries to continue working, but her vision becomes blurry. She sees a man walking over by the pool. She tries steadying herself and goes over to the dishwasher. She discovers a bloody knife in the dishwasher then passes out. 01:04:08 Some time has passed and we find an unconscious Annie passed out beside the pool. Her hands are covered in blood. ANNIE begins to slowly regain consciousness. She appears disorientated, head pounding. Her phone can be seen underwater. She opens here eyes, getting her bearings. To her shock, she’s lying on a ceramic floor, right next to the interior pool. THE BLOODY WATER and DEAD WOMAN FLOATING NEXT TO HER. She gasps. Panicked, she stands up and stares at the dead woman floating in the pool, paralyzed over what to do. She sees her PHONE at the bottom of the pool. She lies down, plunges her right arm into the pool, stretches, retrieves the phone. Annie then dashes out and into the kitchen. 01:05:00 Annie bursts inside. Rushing to the sink, Annie frantically scrubs her hands. She dries her phone...She looks around realizing there’s no hope for her cellphone. She spots a landline phone on the counter nearby and runs towards it. Her eyes drift to a framed photo... noticing a FAMILY PHOTO -- a man and woman in their 40s smiling together. Her eyes widen with recognition... Annie stumbles up to the family photo, stares at the woman’s face with recognition and horror...her breathing begins to quicken as she tries to think through her panic. Leaving the photo, Annie puts the phone back in its cradle. She then starts wiping down every surface she may have left her fingerprints on. Moving fast, she stows her supplies back in the caddy, She hurries to grab her jacket from the back of a chair, puts it over her uniform and rushes towards the back of the house. 01:06:02 We hear POLICE SIRENS approach in the distance... Annie rounds the corner and then stops and glances back over the water. We see the body of Lydia in the pool. Summoning what’s left of her courage, Annie runs out. 01:06:09 Annie stumbles to a stop dropping some of her cleaning supplies as she spots a garbage can. She opens the lid, places her caddy inside under some litter, closes it up again. She then quickly crouches behind it as A POLICE CAR roars past, lights flashing, siren keening. Annie Hides in the shadows. She waits until the coast clear and then darts across the street. 01:06:45 Annie sprints down the street. She stops in front of a house and spots a truck. She makes her way to the back of Billy’s house where his pickup truck is parked. She tries the driver’s door, finds it unlocked. A sigh of relief. Getting behind the wheel, Annie takes a deep breath , opens the glovebox, checks the doors, center console. 01:07:24 With a sigh, she pulls the sunshade down -- a set of KEYS fall out. ANNIE My lucky day... As she inserts the keys into the ignition – 01:07:32 We see a man walking towards the truck. BILLY Hey there -- Annie gasps, startled. She turns and sees a man standing by the truck, tall and intimidating, BILLY . He’s holding a CROWBAR with a half-serious, half-amused look on his face. 01:07:35 Billy stands outside the window looking in at a frightened Annie. BILLY Can I help you? 01:07:37 Annie struggles to find words. ANNIE It’s not what it looks like... 01:07:40 Billy doesn’t look convinced. ANNIE ...I promise. BILLY It uh...looks like you’re trying to steal my truck. 01:07:43 Annie gives in. ANNIE Okay, it is what it looks like – but it’s not what you think. I promise. BILLY Uh-huh...yeah... 01:07:48 Billy nods for Annie to step out. BILLY Why don’t you come on out of there and you can tell the cops all about it, okay? At the mention of cops, Annie’s eyes go wide with panic. ANNIE Please... 01:07:51 Annie stares at Billy pleadingly. ANNIE I’m just trying to get home. BILLY Get home? 01:07:56 Billy sarcastically responds. BILLY ...Well you could uh call a cab? Hop a bus? 01:08:00 Annie slumps. BILLY Grand theft auto? Probably not your best bet. 01:08:02 Billy reaches into his pocket for his phone. ANNIE No, Wait! Please! I-- 01:08:04 Annie desperately tries to find the right words. ANNIE Look...Something happened. I was on a job – and an accident happened. I couldn’t get paid until...I can’t get home... 01:08:16 Billy begins to waver. ANNIE I’m just trying to make it home to my little boy. Please? Billy lowers the crowbar, guarded yet empathetic. BILLY Well what’s so urgent you need my truck? 01:08:23 Annie continues to explain after she catches her breath. ANNIE I left him with the babysitter while I was at work. I’m five hours late and I can’t contact her. I’m really worried... Please... 01:08:35 Billy searches her face, evaluating her story. BILLY You’re not drunk or something, are ya? ANNIE No. 01:08:39 Billy stands outside the truck. ANNIE I don’t drink. 01:08:41 Billy glances back at his house, coming to a decision. BILLY So you just need to get home? 01:08:43 Annie nods. Billy glances back at his house, coming to a decision. BILLY Where do you live? ANNIE Westboro. 01:08:49 Nodding at this information, Billy sighs. 01:08:53 Billy gestures. BILLY Give me the keys. Annie hesitates. BILLY Give me the keys. Annie hands him the keys, uncertain. 01:08:57 Billy studies the keys as he considers. He decides and opens the door. BILLY Push over. I’m driving. Billy opens the door. ANNIE Are you serious? BILLY Yes, I’m serious. But hurry up before I change my mind. Go. Annie moves over. 01:09:05 Billy climbs into the car beside Annie. BILLY Let’s get ya home. I’m Billy. He starts the truck. 01:09:16 Billy’s pickup truck travels through the night. ANNIE I hate to ask this, but...is it okay if I borrow your phone? 01:09:21 Billy looks at her strangely, then hands her his phone. BILLY Ya, go ahead. As Annie takes the phone, she notices a tattoo on his wrist. ANNIE Thank you so much. I really don’t know how to thank you for this. Annie dials a number, holds the phone to her ear. BILLY It’s all good. Just paying it forward. Maybe one of these nights it’s gonna be me out trying to steal your truck out of your driveway, and you’ll... Billy notices Annie shaking her head as she doesn’t get an answer. BILLY ...You’ll do the same for me. She leans forward, cupping her hand listen closely, as the call goes to voice mail... ANNIE Hi Katy -- it’s me, Annie. I know that it’s almost nine o’clock. I’m so sorry, because I said I’d be home hours ago. Just something came up and I...I couldn’t get to a phone, just...Please tell Tate I’m gonna be home soon, and I’ll pay you extra for your time, I...I’m so sorry for all this I really hope that everything’s okay. Okay, bye. Ending the call, Annie stares down at the phone. BILLY No news? ANNIE The babysitter’s not answering. We see lights flashing as A POLICE CAR approaches in the other lane, Annie slouches in her seat. 01:10:08 The police car passes. BILLY Lotta cops out tonight... 01:10:14 Annie doesn’t know how to respond knowing how suspicious she must seem. ANNIE Yeah... BILLY Full moon, I guess. Tate, that’s your son’s name? ANNIE Yeah. He’s eight. BILLY Eight’s a good age. You can ride a bike, you can climb a tree, but you still don’t mind a good tickle, right? Billy glances over at Annie. ANNIE Do you have kids? BILLY Nah... I had a little brother once, though. Annie lets the subject drop. Billy looks at her, then returns to the road ahead. Annie spots an EMPLOYEE CARD for a construction yard. She sees the name under the employee photo, ANTHONY, with the face of an older balding man who looks nothing like Billy. ANNIE I-I thought you said your name was Billy? Billy flips the cards over... but not before Annie sees three more cards with other names. BILLY Yeah...My friends call me Billy. And the occasional thief I catch out in my driveway at night. Annie says nothing, eyeing the time on the dash clock. She sighs deeply. 01:11:18 Billy’s truck pulls up outside of Annie’s house. ON ANNIE AND BILLY IN THE TRUCK Truck comes to a stop. Annie notices something unusual: all the lights are off. ANNIE Something’s not right. She leaps out the door, eager to get to her kid. Billy opens his door and climbs out. ANNIE What are you doing? BILLY I wanna make sure everything’s okay. ANNIE Oh, no, you don’t need to do that. It’s okay. BILLY Look, I’m here now. Let’s just make sure it’s alright. Annie heads for the door, Billy following. 01:11:48 ANNIE Katy? Tate? Annie runs around turning on all the lights. ANNIE Tate? 01:11:58 01:12:10 Billy stands watching her from the doorway. ANNIE They should be here... They’re not here... As he looks at her with sympathy, suddenly Billy’s PHONE CHIMES. He puts it to his ear... BILLY Yeah, this is Billy. Yeah, she is. He listens a second, then holds the phone out to Annie. BILLY It’s for you. Taking the phone hesitantly, Annie puts it to her ear. ANNIE Hello? 01:12:28 KATY Hi Mrs. Wilkerson. It’s Katy! I-- 01:12:28 Annie sighs with relief. KATY --just got your message... ANNIE Katy! Yes, hi. Thank goodness you’re alright. Where are you? Where’s Tate? 01:12:36 Katie looks confused. KATY Tate? What do you mean? Is he not at your mother-in-law’s? 01:12:41 Now Annie is the one who is confused. ANNIE My mother--why would he be with my mother-in-law? KATY Well...When you weren’t picking up your phone-- 01:12:45 Katy has a worried expression on her face. She’s not sure if she did something wrong. KATY --for like 3 hours...I called the emergency contact number you gave me. 01:12:48 Annie puts her hand on her head realizing. ANNIE Oh right! The emergency contact... Oh, I completely forgot that I did that. Of course, you would have called Elizabeth -- Katy, I’m so sorry for the confusion. I-I-I...I got so distracted with work. KATY Is everything okay, Mrs. Wilkerson? 01:13:00 KATY I didn’t do anything wrong did I? ANNIE Oh no, no! 01:13:03 Annie paces as she speaks with Katy. ANNIE You didn’t do anything wrong--And Everything’s fine. It’s just been a really long night. Billy watches with a concerned look on his face. KATY Okay-- 01:13:07 Katy looks concerned. KATY Um...I should probably get back to studying then. Just let me know-- 01:13:11 Billy leans on the doorway watching Annie. KATY --when me you’ll need again! ANNIE Of course! Thank you, Katy. Annie ends the call, relieved. Taking a second to collect herself. KATY He’s at my ex-mother-in law’s. I’m just gonna call... BILLY Yeah, go ahead. Annie dials Elizabeth’s number. She gets an answering machine yet again. ANNIE Hi Elizabeth -- it’s Annie! I’m so sorry that I’m calling so late. I uh...I lost my phone and...if you can, just give me a call back on this number when you can. Thanks, bye. Ending the call, she hands Billy back his phone... ANNIE Um...Thanks you. Billy waves her off. BILLY You keep it. I think you need it more than I do. Uh...which is why I should probably go now. So... He looks to the door, acting a little disappointed to leave. ANNIE Hey...Uh...Can I off you something for the road? A cup of coffee or...let me pay for your gas at least? BILLY Stop. Nah, It’s all good. If I go now, I can catch the end of the game. No harm. Just take care of yourself. ANNIE Hey, uh...I don’t know why you’re being so nice to me...I mean especially since...how we met. Thank you. BILLY Well, um...I don’t know. Sometimes we do crazy things because we don’t have a choice, right? Annie nods. ANNIE Yeah... Annie just stares, worried his kindness is all an act, in no mental state to trust anyone right now. BILLY And if I’m being totally honest with you...you didn’t strike me as the carjacking type. He smiles and Annie laughs. He then turns to leave. BILLY I’m gonna go. It was uh...It was really nice to meet you. I hope everything’s okay. And if you ever need me, you know how to find me, right? Annie nods. ANNIE Thank you. Bye, Billy. Offering her one last smile, Billy gives a small wave and walks out the door. 01:14:55 Billy glances back through the window as he walks towards his truck. 01:15:00 A big house on a nice street, a powder room shy of a mansion. Annie is dropped off by a car service. Annie looks around, a bit nervous. Taking a deep breath, she marches up the driveway. We hear her knock on the door. ELIZABETH Annie! 01:15:17 Elizabeth answers the door with a surprised look on her face. ELIZABETH Where have you been! I’ve been so worried! When I got that frantic call from the babysitter I just assumed the worst! Are you okay? A shot of Tate sleeping. Annie tries to present a strong front, keeping it together. ANNIE Yeah. Where’s Tate? ELIZABETH I put him to bed an hour ago. Annie walks towards the bedroom. She seems to have tunnel vision. ELIZABETH Annie-Annie! Are you sure you’re telling me the truth? Annie turns around. Stays calm. ANNIE What do you mean? ELIZABETH Well...This coming Monday...the 22nd...is the anniversary of Gerald’s passing. ANNIE Right, Right... The reminder causes Annie a spike of pain, remembering. ELIZABETH I know it hasn’t been an easy three years for you. For any of us. ANNIE Yeah, you’re right. It hasn’t. Thank you...I don’t know where I’d be without you. ELIZABETH I stood by you, Annie, because Tate needed a mother, and you needed a friend. Elizabeth reaches for Elizabeth’s hand, comfortingly. Annie smiles, gratefully. ANNIE Thank you for watching him. Annie nods her head towards his room. ANNIE I’m gonna get him. Sleeping in his bed is Annie’s son, TATE . Annie goes and sits on the edge of Tate’s bed. A sigh of relief as she places a hand on his shoulder as if to check he’s real. Elizabeth stands in the doorway, both watching Tate. Annie spots a video game controller resting on the bed beside Tate. She looks over at Elizabeth with an exasperated glare. ANNIE You gotta stop spoiling him like this. ELIZABETH I’m sorry. I... I can’t say no to him. Annie leans in closer to Tate. ANNIE Hey...Hey sleepy-head...Wake up. Tate wakes up and rolls over to see his mom. TATE Mommy. ANNIE It’s me. Tate hugs Annie. 01:17:01 Annie and Tate exit Elizabeth’s house. Annie turns to Elizabeth, whose eyes are on her grandson, looking sad to see him go. ANNIE Sorry...for the misunderstanding. ELIZABETH It was my pleasure. You know Tate’s welcome here anytime. That both of you are. ANNIE Thank you. ELIZABETH. Yeah. Text me when you’re home safe, hm? ANNIE I will. Let’s go. Come on. With a nod goodbye, Annie heads down the driveway... Elizabeth watching from the door. She blows a kiss. 01:17:20 01:17:38 Annie lays Tate in bed, tucks him in, kisses his forehead. As she goes to turn off the light... She sees her sleeve poke from her jacket -- blood on it. She tucks it back in. 01:18:05 INT ANNIE’S HOME – BATHROOM – NIGHT Annie’s blood stained shirt is sitting in the bathroom sink under running water. With her hair wet, fresh out of the shower, wearing pajamas, Annie stands in front of the mirror as she scrubs at the blood. She can’t get the stain out. She stops, opens a door under the sink, roots for more cleaning supplies. Finds a better brush. Same result. Goes frantic. Finally succeeding she throws the wet garment over her shower doors to dry. She quickly cleans up any left-over residue. 01:18:47 In the living room Annie walks into frame. Annie walks around her living room. She glances out the window. POV: A car parked outside. Annie sees a framed photo. She stares at it. Fighting tears. She takes a seat and we see what picture she’s looking at. A picture of her and her husband in happier times. We pull focus and see her reflection in the framed photo. On her eyes. We get it. The woman’s BEEN THROUGH A LOT. We return to the window where we can see that the car is still sitting there. 01:19:33 Through the window we see Annie looking at the picture. The black Cadillac parked across the street suddently turns the headlights on. It drives off... Back through the window we see Annie return the photo. 01:19:50 BLACK ACT TWO 01:19:51 There’s thick haze outside of a window. Coming from the forest, Annie walks up to the windows. She looks around, worried she might get caught by an officer on duty at the crime scene. She’s looking for something - something she left behind that could incriminate her? She cranes her neck up, looking around the pool. Suddenly and from out of nowhere the dead woman shows up right in front of Annie - nose to nose - nothing but a window separating them. The woman is standing, dripping wet, with clothes sticking to her body like the skin of a fish. With a blood stain, and crazy eyes. END ANNIE’S DREAM 01:20:09 She looks over to see Tate is awake, staring at her, in bed. TATE Are you okay? Annie stares at him a second, still coming back to reality, her anxiety nightmare dissipating. ANNIE Yeah... Sorry sweetie. Mommy just had a bad dream. Annie takes a deep breath and gathers herself. ANNIE Um...I’m gonna go and make some breakfast. TATE Okay. ANNIE Just keep playing. Tate nods eagerly at the suggestion, as Annie climbs to her feet and bustles out of the room. Tate plays with his dinosaur. TATE Rawr...rawr... 01:20:46 Annie makes pancakes at the stove. Tate wanders into the room in his pajamas. His eyes light up at the sight of a tower of PANCAKES on the table, a bottle of syrup beside them. TATE Wow, that’s a lot of pancakes! Annie brings the last batch to the table, pulls out a chair for Tate, sits across from him. ANNIE Chocolate chip and blueberry. TATE My favorite. ANNIE I know. Annie grabs some coffee. ANNIE So, how are you doing today, Sweetie? TATE Good. Annie watches Tate as he enjoys the pancakes. ANNIE I’m sorry that I confused you yesterday. You must have wondered where I was. Still eating with gusto, Tate shrugs. TATE Grandma said that you were busy working. ANNIE Well, that’s true. She turns and opens her laptop to look at her work schedule. Her face cringes at something. ANNIE What? POV: Focused on one column, the header ‘HIRED BY’... seeing options ‘SCHEDULED JOB’, ‘NEW ASSIGNMENT’... At the final entry, she reads the words ‘REQUEST BY OWNER’. ANNIE I was requested... by name? Annie sits back, staring at the laptop... TATE Aren’t you having any pancakes, Mom? ANNIE I’m okay sweetie...I’m not hungry right now. You eat up. Suddenly, there’s a KNOCK at the door, startling her. Annie rushes over to answer the door. Annie opens the door... revealing her babysitter, Katy. ANNIE Katy! Thank you for coming. KATY Of course, Mrs. Wilkerson. I’ve just been feeling so awful about what happened last night... ANNIE It wasn’t your fault. It was a misunderstanding. Okay? You’re okay to watch him for a few hours? What I have to do shouldn’t take too long. I did get a new phone, okay? So please text me if anything happens... Or if you need to go anywhere. Okay? I’m gonna text you the number. KATY Of course, Mrs. Wilkerson. I’m not gonna let you down. ANNIE Great. Annie throws her jacket on. KATY Tate and I are going to have a great day. ANNIE And please help yourself to the pancakes, okay? Annie looks at Katy... then at her son. Wants to protect him at all cost. She forces a reassuring smile. ANNIE Okay. Buddy? Be good, okay? Annie kisses him on the forehead. TATE Alright. Bye mom! ANNIE Bye. Okay. KATY Bye. See ya. ANNIE Bye, have a good day, you guys. KATY See ya. Annie leaves. She turns back and takes one last look at Tate. 01:23:06 As Annie makes her way to a car... 01:23:12 Through a rear-view mirror, we see that someone is watching Annie get into the car. The SHADOWY FIGURE at the wheel, watching. It starts up in her wake, pulling out to follow her. Annie stands at the door of a cold, modernist home, rings the doorbell. Seconds later, the door opens to reveal a dashing, greying attorney, HANK DARROW , surprised to see her. HANK Annie! It’s been too long! To what do I owe the pleasure? He glances behind her, seeing only his SUV in the driveway. HANK Are you here on your own? ANNIE I didn’t know who else to turn to. Annie glances over her shoulder, searching the street. ANNIE I’m in trouble. I need your help again. Hank raises an eyebrow, opens the door wider. HANK Please... come in. Hank peers down the street in the direction Annie was staring... seeing nothing. Then closes the door. 01:23:27 We watch as Annie travels down the road being followed. 01:23:32 The car continues to follow Annie. 01:23:37 The cars continue to drive along the water. 01:23:42 Annie is dropped off outside of a house. She glances around then runs up to the house and knocks. 01:24:04 Hank walks over to the door and finds Annie. He’s shocked to see her. HANK Annie? P-Please, come in. Annie walks inside. ANNIE I’m so sorry to barge in on you like this. I just didn’t know where else to turn. HANK No. Not at all. ANNIE I’m in trouble. Hank considers this and sits down. He gestures for her to sit. Hank Okay. Uh...Have a seat. Tell me--tell me exactly what’s going on. ANNIE Okay...So you know that I am working for this cleaning service. Last night I blacked out...or I was drugged somehow. I woke up with blood all over my hands. She takes a deep breath... ANNIE The head juror from my trial...Lydia Mosley... she’s dead. HANK W-What? ANNIE I didn’t know it was her house, okay? She wasn’t there when I arrived. There was a note on the door telling me to come in. There was a bloody knife in the dishwasher. I found it. As Hank reacts to this with shock, eyes wide... HANK Okay, um...Annie, we uh...we need to contact the police. Immediately. Annie stands. ANNIE They’re gonna think that I did it. Okay? They’re gonna think that I killed her, Hank. For revenge. HANK Annie...By leaving that house your options have narrowed with every step. You’ve incriminated yourself. ANNIE I didn’t have a choice. They’re not gonna believe me! HANK Listen to me. Okay? You need to trust in the system! Let me help you! ANNIE The system that locked me away? Hank hesitates before answering, knowing she’s right. ANNIE Look, I can’t do that. I can’t let them take him away from me again. I need to know who is trying to set me up. Hank shakes his head, seeing she’s made up her mind. HANK What can I do to help? ANNIE I just need to figure out what they know in the investigation with Lydia. Can you...call your friends? Please? Hank thinks about it, and checks his watch. ANNIE Please? HANK Let me make a few calls. ANNIE Thank you. Hank leaves the room. Annie is left alone. 01:26:22 Outside Hank Darrow’s house. 01:26:26 Annie paces, lost in thought. She turns as Hank walks in looking grim. HANK Her death is being investigated as a murder. There was an anonymous phone call made to the police. Um...Forensics are still at the house, so... Hank sits, concerned. HANK It’s only a matter of time, Annie. A few days at most. Even if they don’t find a fingerprint or a DNA sample, they’re gonna check her phone records -- see who she hired. They’ll know you were there. Annie sits. ANNIE Okay...then I need figure out who’s trying to set me up... before the police do. She stands and considers, then looks back at Hank. ANNIE I mean whoever did this, they could have killed me. They could have made me disappear. They wanted to see me behind bars. HANK Or, whoever did this wanted Lydia Mosley dead, and you were simply caught in the crossfire. Annie stares at him, thinking it over, unconvinced. ANNIE I don’t believe that. I need to figure this out. Thank you. I’ll be in touch. Taking a deep breath, Annie rushes out the door... Hank staring after her with worry. HANK Annie... 01:27:49 Annie walks out in a daze, her world caving in around her... heading down the street. Suddenly she stops, spotting a car parked behind her, something about it seeming out of place -- The same black Cadillac, a SHADOWY DRIVER at the wheel. She turns around and starts toward it, picking up speed... but the car backs up and pulls a u-turn as she approaches. It tears down the street before she can get a better look at the driver. ANNIE Hey! Hey! Hey! Stop! Stop! Why are you following me? Stop! Hey! As the black Cadillac vanishes around the corner... ANNIE SNAPS A PHOTO OF THE LICENSE PLATE WITH HER PHONE. She stands there breathing hard, frightened and angry. 01:28:19 BLACK ACT THREE 01:28:20 Annie walks up Billy’s driveway. 01:28:24 Through the window we can see Annie approaching. 01:28:30 Annie knocks at the door, glancing over her shoulder...checking for the black Cadillac. All clear. A second passes, then the door opens to reveal Billy. 01:28:36 INTERCUT Billy is surprised to see Annie standing at his door. BILLY Hey! Annie! I didn’t expect to see you-- ANNIE --So soon? BILLY Uh...More like... again. He doesn’t look displeased though, staring at her, smiling. ANNIE I wanted to bring you something -- just to say thank you for what you did. Annie shows Billy what she’s got behind her back -- a retractable car-club ‘steering wheel lock’. ANNIE It’s for your steering wheel. For intruders. BILLY Yeah... ANNIE It’s a gift. Billy smiles, accepts the gift, testing its weight. BILLY Yeah, well now that you mention it, I have been rethinking my spare key policy. He smiles at her... and Annie smiles back, feeling better. A flirty moment between the two. Billy can’t stop smiling. BILLY Do you Want to come in? Annie nods. ANNIE Yeah. Annie enters and Billy closes the door behind her. BILLY Sorry about the mess... 01:29:10 Annie walks inside, taking in Billy’s space as he shoves two American passports and two Canadian passports into a drawer. He also puts away some illicit-looking paraphernalia. Billy picks up some clothes. Annie stares around, spots a photo of BILLY’S MOM with her two YOUNG SONS ...one of which has blue eyes and is undoubtedly young Billy. There’s an urn right next to the framed photo. ANNIE Oh...It’s okay. Um... Billy hides what looks like drug paraphernalia. ANNIE So um...What do you do...uh...for a living, Billy? You said construction, right? BILLY Yeah, you know...um...odd jobs, this and that. Um...why don’t you tell me why you’re really here, huh? Annie knows she can’t fool him. ANNIE Look, I really did want to thank you. It’s been a long time since someone’s been nice to me. But you’re right. I am here because I need your help. BILLY Okay... ANNIE I think that somebody’s following me. BILLY Can’t call the cops? She shakes her head no. BILLY What happened yesterday? Annie stares at him, wondering how much she can reveal... and instead elects to only reveal part of it. BILLY Right... ANNIE I was in prison... for almost three years. I just got out not long ago. My parole had two conditions, okay? Get a job, and stay out of trouble. And yesterday I messed up both of them. BILLY So... you came here? Pulling out her borrowed phone, Annie shows him the photo of the LICENSE PLATE of the black Cadillac she took. She zooms in on the license plate... the numbers aren’t perfectly clear, but good enough to correctly identify them. ANNIE I managed to get a picture of the license plate of the car who I think has been following me, and I thought that...maybe you might know a guy that could help me run it. BILLY So you’re saying I kinda look like a guy who knows a guy? Annie hesitates, not wanting to offend him. ANNIE Your tattoo...I saw something similar when I was on the inside. Billy keeps her on the hook a little longer, then grins. Taking the print-out, Billy reaches underneath the couch, grasps around, pulls out a LAPTOP covered in stickers, clears a row of beer cans off the coffee table, sets it down. BILLY Alright...Well...You’re not wrong. In my line of work, you need to look up a few IDs, so to speak. Know who you're really dealing with. Now I downloaded this software from a very charming fellow on a message board that shall remain...nameless. ANNIE What about me? Did you look me up? BILLY Maybe... ANNIE And what did you find? Billy hesitates, looking at her with sympathy... BILLY I found a sad story about a car crash from a few years back... and the rest is none of my business. As Annie stares, Billy hunches over his laptop. ANNIE So you don’t care? BILLY No, I care. Believe me I care. My um...my mom... She... let’s just say that I know something about being a single mom with a record raising a son...OR two. Annie is taken aback. BILLY I just really appreciate what you’re going through... and I want to help you. I really do. Okay? Annie finally lets her guard down. Hitting a few keys, Billy waits a moment. BILLY Let me see that picture again? Annie shows him the photo. BILLY Huh...Gun metal grey Audi... Let me try something. He hits a few more keys. 01:32:48 EXT BILLY’S HOUSE – DAY Shot from the road of Billy’s house. BILLY Yeah...Here we go. 01:32:51 He turns the laptop so Annie can view the screen... ON THE SCREEN... Annie sees an ADDRESS... 642 County Road 23... and a man’s name and MUGSHOT... ‘MAYNARD BARNES. ANNIE Maynard Barnes... AKA Jack Manson, AKA Peter Budd. Her eyes go wide as Billy hits another key and Maynard’s LENGTHY CRIMINAL RECORD starts scrolling down the page... Annie sees the terms... ‘assault with a deadly weapon’, ‘assault’, ‘assault’, ‘aggravated assault’, ‘criminal mischief’, ‘illegal confinement’, ‘break and enter’... ANNIE He’s a career criminal...I mean-- Why would someone like him wanna follow me? BILLY You tell me. ANNIE No I kept my nose clean in prison. And I’ve kept to myself ever since. BILLY This guy...he drives around in a car that sticks out like a sore thumb with his own license plate, okay? So maybe he just thought you were an easy mark and that he wouldn’t have to worry ya, still, I don’t think he’s the sharpest tool in the shed, you know? Somebody has to be paying him. He’s probably not the one pulling the strings. Annie stares at Maynard Barnes’ MUGSHOT, his dark menacing scowl and conniving expression. ANNIE I’m gonna find out who. BILLY Let’s go. Although she appreciates the offer, Annie shakes her head. ANNIE No, you don’t have to come. Honestly, you’ve done enough, Billy-- BILLY --No. I’m not arguing this. I’m not arguing this. Okay? That being said though...this guy, Maynard--he lives pretty far out there. So, I’d appreciate if you could fill up my tank with gas...and then I’ll take you out there. Billy flashes a charming smile. BILLY I’m kidding. They lock eyes and share a moment. 01:33:58 Billy’s truck travels down a forested road. 01:34:07 A house sits in the middle of nowhere. Annie can be seen crouching to see past some trees looking unsure. Billy Joins her. BILLY Hey. ANNIE Hey, BILLY Anything? ANNIE Are you sure this is the place? BILLY Yeah. This is it. I’m sure. Hey. Alright. Come on, let’s go. Billy and Annie head back to the truck. BILLY Okay...how do you wanna play this? ANNIE I don’t know. BILLY Well...This is what we do. We sit. And we wait. And we watch. Gotta get the lay of the land. I mean...He could be alone, he could have an entire SWAT team in there for all we know. 01:34:52 Annie sighs, nods in agreement. They sit in silence, Annie fidgety, staring out the windshield. BILLY Hey, can I uh...can I ask you about your accident? What happened? Annie stares out the window, thinking back... ANNIE We were...driving home after a party. Gerald, he’d...he’d had a bit too much to drink, and he was being playful...and he was trying to kiss me... I took my eyes off the road for just a second. When I looked back there were headlights coming right at us... QUICK FLASH 01:35:51 Headlights coming right at us. Tires squeaking. Burning rubber. END QUICK FLASH 01:35:53 Annie winces, summoning the strength to continue, staring out Billy’s windshield as if looking through her own... ANNIE The next thing I remember...was a police officer shining a light in my eyes, and asking me questions... while I watched my husband being wheeled away... Staring out the windshield, Annie takes a breath, closes her eyes. She looks at the dash, remembers... ANNIE They sentenced me to three and a half years for driving under the influence. Although I didn’t have any drinks that night. I don’t remember the last time I had a drink...but...I think I blamed myself, and everything happened really fast. Tate went to stay with his grandma, and I got out after two and a half. Two and a half years of my life was stolen from me. Two and a half years without my son. Billy looks at Annie, heartbroken for her. BILLY Annie...I’m so sorry. Annie looks over at Billy Gratefully. ANNIE I need to clear my name. I don’t have any more time to waste. 01:37:36 Billy watches Annie with a confused look. ANNIE I need to go in. She opens her door. As he watches Annie head for the house... Billy climbs out after her. 01:37:47 Annie and Billy huddle out of sight near a window. Cautiously, Annie reaches for the window... ANNIE Hey... Annie finds the window unlocked and Billy gives a satisfied laugh. Annie opens the window and climbs in. ANNIE Come on. Billy shakes his head. BILLY Open the door. Billy heads around to the door. Annie meets Billy at the back door. A smug Billy walks past. BILLY Thanks. Annie closes the door and locks it again. SERIES OF QUICK SHOTS LIVING ROOM Annie goes through a set of drawers... finds nothing. MAYNARD’S KITCHEN Billy looks through the kitchen, searching cupboards. Nothing. On the counter by the sink, he sees receipts for a series of money transfers... BILLY Hey...Someone’s paying this guy a boat load of money. Like...forty grand this month. LIVING ROOM Searching other drawers, Annie pulls out a folder, peers inside. She’s looking inside the folder - we can’t see what she sees for now. Annie sees a PHOTO of herself, another photo showing her MUGSHOT... along with personal information. MAYNARD’S UPSTAIRS ROOM Billy walks into a room upstairs. It’s messy. There are porcelain dolls and a FRAMED PHOTO of Maynard and his mother. The man certainly doesn’t look threatening on this photo. He’s nothing but a guy with a big heart and poor decision- making skills. 01:39:15 A car pulls up to the house. 01:39:19 Billy finds ROLLS OF CASH AND ASSORTED JEWELRY. He fits everything he can into his pockets. He then finds rolled up cash in an old record player. Helps himself to those as well. 01:39:30 Maynard and Marcus exit the car. 01:39:34 Billy hears the car doors shut. Annie hears them. She runs toward the staircase. ANNIE Billy! Annie gestures for him to hurry up. Billy hurries down. MAYNARD’S KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM Maynard and Marcus enter the house. 01:39:50 Billy and Annie are hiding by the front door, waiting for the right moment to run. They bail. 01:39:54 They begin walking around. Suspicious. 01:40:03 Maynard comes over to the front door, glances around. Outside in the driveway. Nothing. Billy and Annie are hiding out of view. They make a run for it. 01:40:19 Marcus checks the hiding places where the money and jewels were stashed. He finds them missing. He slams the lid down and storms out. 01:40:24 01:40:36 Maynard grabs his hat off of a rack and storms out with Marcus. Marcus slams the door behind him. 01:40:44 Marcus and Maynard get back in the car. 01:40:48 Annie looks at Billy, trying to figure out her next move. Suddenly. ANNIE They’re leaving again... They see Maynard and Marcus drive by in their Cadillac. They turn to each other, both thinking the same thing. BILLY We’ve come this far... Let’s go see where they’re going. Lingering far behind, they follow the black Cadillac. 01:41:04 BLACK ACT FOUR 01:41:05 01:41:15 Maynard pulls to a stop by a lone MAILBOX. ... Billy’s truck sits parked out of sight down below. Marcus climbs out, opens the mailbox, pulls out a THICK YELLOW PLASTIC ENVELOPE. He opens it, checks the cash inside, does a gangster flip of the cash to make sure all the money is there. 01:41:45 They lock eyes as they see Maynard open the yellow envelope. 01:41:47 Marcus gets back into the car. BILLY So... 01:41:49 Billy looks over at Annie for the next steps. BILLY Do we just keep following them? Annie considers. 01:41:52 01:41:58 Annie glances over at Billy. She waits for them to drive off and then jumps out of the Truck. 01:42:03 Annie climbs the hill toward the mailbox, checks inside... Billy runs up behind her, eyes on the house by the edge of the cove. Pulling out some MAIL... ANNIE It’s mostly just junk mail... Suddenly, Annie’s eyes go wide. She turns to Billy. ANNIE Oh my God... There’s also an official letter addressed to the owner of the house: HYDRO BILL? Addressed to SAMUEL PRIMM - 32 Tucamore Heights. BILLY What is it? ANNIE The man who lives here... His name is Samuel Primm. BILLY Who’s Samuel Primm? ANNIE The night of my accident...the guy driving the other car. That was his name. They both turn towards the house by the edge of the cove. BILLY Annie...that is one hell of a coincidence. ANNIE Is he behind all this? Why? BILLY Maybe you can ask him yourself... Annie follows Billy’s gaze to the side of the house... She sees SAMUEL PRIMM . They hide out of sight, watching as... using a cane for balance, he limps towards his garage. ANNIE He looks older than I remember. They watch as Samuel enters his garage. BILLY Well, what do you want to do? ANNIE I don’t know... BILLY I’ll go in first. ANNIE No! What are we gonna do? Tie him up? Force a confession from him? Ignoring the judgment in her eyes, Billy stares ahead. BILLY Yeah. Maybe. If that’s what it takes. That’s what I’m gonna-- ANNIE No! We can’t do that! BILLY Annie, listen to me--if this guy is involved with someone like Maynard Barnes, we can not be messing around with him. Okay? Maynard and Marcus have circled back behind them... It enters frame left. Maynard and Marcus sit inside, watching Annie and Billy. ANNIE Maybe there’s another way... BILLY Yeah? Like what? ANNIE I’m going go and talk to him. I mean, I don’t have time to be careful anymore. Billy says nothing as he watches Annie leave. He shakes his head no and eventually joins her. We see Maynard and Marcus watching from a safe distance. 01:43:41 Maynard and Marcus watch. MAYNARD Think they bought it? Maynard looks at Marcus and removes his hat. 01:43:51 Annie heads towards Samuel’s house... passing SAMUEL’S CAR. Billy watches Annie. Annie enters the barn and looks around. Samuel catches her off guard. SAMUEL Yes? Can I help you? ANNIE Samuel Primm? SAMUEL Yeah... Do I know you? ANNIE Annie Wilkerson. His eyes widen, recognizing her... He stares at her like an apparition, a ghost from the past. SAMUEL You’re here... ANNIE Were you expecting me? Samuel looks at her, considering. SAMUEL Please... come inside. Annie hesitates, but then begins to follow. 01:44:26 Annie sits at the dining room while Samuel limps across the floor to take a seat across from her, having trouble sitting. ANNIE I heard...that you were badly injured. In the crash. Samuel shifts in his chair, trying to get more comfortable. SAMUEL Spine, mostly. ANNIE All that time in court sitting across from each other... I don’t think we ever spoke. SAMUEL Legally...I suppose we weren’t allowed to. ANNIE I remember that you couldn’t look at me. Samuel slowly looks up...clearly hard for him to do. ANNIE I think about that night...all the time. SAMUEL As do I. He looks away, Annie watching him, trying to determine if there’s any animosity in his eyes. ANNIE I came to ask you... I came to ask you...why you're trying to destroy my life. And to beg you to stop. Is it about revenge? SAMUEL Revenge? I-I don’t know what you’re talking about... ANNIE I saw it with my own eyes! You’re paying them! The men that are following me and trying to set me up! Why? SAMUEL What men? Annie searches his face, looking for the truth... SAMUEL Annie -- what happened to you was an injustice. If you came here coming to-to find the conspiracy. You came here for nothing. I harbor nothing but remorse. Annie freezes, eyes wide, surprised to hear this. ANNIE What? Samuel stares at Annie with tears filling his eyes... SAMUEL The a-- the accident was all my fault. I was texting and-and driving, and...I veered out of my lane... ANNIE Why would the police officer lie? SAMUEL He was protecting me. He was a friend of mine...we grew up together. He changed the results of your blood tests. Annie stares, trying to absorb this revelation. ANNIE The investigating officer, where is he now? SAMUEL He-he died almost two years ago. He had cancer. ANNIE Okay...so those men...they weren’t here for you? SAMUEL I-I live here on my own with...with my cows. I don’t see anyone, I don’t speak to anyone. ANNIE Okay...So then what were they doing here? I mean who could they be working for? I... SAMUEL Please...excuse me...I have to take one of my pills...this has been...a lot. Annie? Annie looks up at Samuel. He has tears in his eyes. SAMUEL I’m sorry...I’m sorry. Annie doesn’t know what to say. Samuel limps into the hallway... 01:48:36 Billy’s truck pulls into a rest stop. He looks over at a contemplative Annie. They sit there for a moment in silence, until... BILLY What did that guy say to you? ANNIE He said that...I was wrongfully imprisoned...and that they took my son...for nothing. They lock eyes. Billy feels bad. After a moment, he speaks. BILLY Um...I’m gonna get you something to drink... Do you need anything else? She shakes her head no. BILLY Okay... Billy pockets his phone, but as he comes out of the vehicle, the phones slips out of his jacket’s pocket and ends up on the driver seat. 01:49:35 Annie sits in the passenger seat and waits for Billy. Billy enters the gas station store. Annie glances at the phone. Hesitates. Finally picks it up. Starts scrolling. We don’t see the screen, just her reaction. Her thumb sliding up and down. Checking his messages and latest web searches. Suddenly, she frowns. PHONE INSERT There’s a web search about ELIZABETH HALE. The fastest readers will catch glimpses of the following text - prime focus is underlined: Philadelphia-born Elizabeth Hale donated to an astounding range of institutions, some of which today bear the family name: the Hale Gallery, in Washington; the Hale Museum, at Harvard; the Hale Center for Arts Education, at the Guggenheim; and Hale institutes and facilities at Columbia, Oxford, and several other universities. Elizabeth Hale has endowed several professorships and underwritten numerous medical research. 01:49:58 Billy comes back with pain killers and two bottles of water. BILLY Here’s some water and here’s...these...those... Annie confronts him just as he sits back down in the driver’s seat and sees Annie holding his phone. ANNIE What is this? Taken by surprise, Billy stares at the web page. BILLY Yeah...you know, I told you...I-I check up on people I’m working with. ANNIE Oh, so that’s what we’re doing now? We’re working together? You’re been looking into my mother-in-law! Her business dealings, her financial holdings... Is that why you’re actually helping me out? Just to get access to her wealth? Or is something worse? Are you part of what’s happening here? BILLY Annie, come on...we met by accident! ANNIE Tell me the truth. BILLY You found me, remember? ANNIE Am I just some mark to you? Billy tries to find the right words. BILLY Look, maybe I considered that there’d be some reward somewhere down the road. Maybe. Okay? But, you know, what’s the big deal? The truth is...now that I’ve gotten to know you...and spent time with you. I-I’ve realized that I really like being with you. Annie studies Billy. ANNIE I don’t believe you. He scoffs. BILLY Okay, well...What about you? I saw the news: Lydia Mosley? Local woman found dead, murderer on the loose? Is that just a coincidence? What were you running from? Hm? The night I met you? Annie stares at him. ANNIE I did nothing wrong. Nothing. She gets out of the truck. BILLY Annie--Annie! Wait! Annie walks away. Billy sighs. 01:51:56 BLACK ACT FIVE 01:51:57 Annie rushes inside, seeing there’s no one home... ANNIE Katy? Tate? Quick shots of Annie checking rooms. ANNIE Tate? She races out of the room and frantically. Annie has her phone out, about to make a call...when suddenly she hears someone at the door. Panicking, she grabs a candlestick off the shelf to use as a weapon, leans against the wall right next to the mudroom -- In walks KATY and TATE... holding a baseball glove. Annie slowly puts the candlestick back where she found it. KATY Mrs. Wilkerson! You’re back! Everything okay? ANNIE Yeah. KATY Tate wanted to play catch so we just went to the park. Tate nods, smiles. TATE We ran two whole blocks on the way back! Still collecting herself, Annie plays along. Lowering down, she hugs him tightly. ANNIE Wow...Oh my God. I’m just so glad you guys are okay. TATE Mom...you’re squeezing me! Annie finally releases Tate. ANNIE Sorry, buddy. Okay, you’re gonna go and pack some stuff because we’re gonna go to grandma’s, okay? Go! Go! With a nod, Tate races off into the bathroom. Annie turns to Katy ANNIE Thank you again for staying so long. KATY No worries. We had an awesome day. ANNIE Oh I’m glad. Okay...You’re okay to get home? KATY Yeah! Sure! ANNIE Great. KATY I’ll see you next week? ANNIE Yes. KATY Okay. ANNIE Thank you so much. As Annie nods, Katy calls into the bathroom... KATY Bye Tate! ANNIE Okay...Bye Katy. Katy waves as she heads out the door. KATY See ya. Annie sighs and stares out at the street with paranoia... Annie grabs a suitcase, starts packing clothes and supplies for Tate. 01:53:25 We see a tea tray set for two. The camera pans up and see Annie pacing by the fireplace, lost in thought. She doesn’t look up as Elizabeth joins her. ELIZABETH Now...are you going to finally tell me what’s going on with you? Or do I have to hire myself a private detective? Annie offers her a thousand-mile stare. ANNIE I think I’m in trouble, Liz. Someone’s trying to set me up -- put me back in prison. ELIZABETH Set you up? Why? How? ANNIE Well, at first I thought it had something to do with the accident. But I think it’s actually linked to something much bigger. Okay, I met with Samuel Primm. He told me what happened the night of the accident. The truth. Elizabeth has a confused expression. ELIZABETH What truth? ANNIE The night of the accident...the night Gerald died... he admitted that it was his fault... That he was texting and driving. ELIZABETH You’re saying that the officer on duty that night lied under oath? ANNIE Yes, to protect the other driver. To protect Samuel Primm. They were childhood friends. Elizabeth stares at her wide-eyed... ELIZABETH Well, we have to call the police! ANNIE No! ELIZABETH To make you’re exonerated! ANNIE No-no--Trust me. Just-we can’t do that right now. ELIZABETH Well...you could phone Hank? I mean...Surely he’s in a position to help? At least give you some advice! ANNIE I’m just not sure who I can trust right now. ELIZABETH You can trust me, Annie. I’d never do anything to hurt Tate. Annie sighs. ANNIE I know... I know that. The last couple days have just been a nightmare. ELIZABETH You poor thing. Let me get you a nice cup of tea. I’ll be right back. She leaves. Annie paces in the living room. Nervous. Tired. She walks up to the living room table, notices a novel. She then sees a check just peeking out from underneath the novel. Right away, something catches Annie’s attention. Elizabeth’s handwriting. BEGIN QUICK FLASHBACK 01:55:31 On the table, Annie notices a PITCHER OF WATER filled with ice, a glass beside it and another NOTE with the same cursive handwriting... Help yourself! END FLASHBACK 01:55:33 Annie paces around the living room, then hears Elizabeth come back into the living room. She stares accusingly at her ex-mother-in-law as the woman places the tray down on the table. Elizabeth then notices Annie’s accusing stare. ELIZABETH What’s wrong? Annie shakes her head no. Still staring accusingly. ANNIE It was you. Elizabeth notices the check in Annie’s hand. Slowly, Elizabeth’s sweet, grandmotherly expression of caring and concern morphs into something much shrewder, conniving. ELIZABETH Yes...Yes...I did it for Tate. He had a choice. Stay with the woman who took him in, and who had the means to give him everything his heart could desire... Or go with the woman who abandoned him, who’s dark past will forever shadow his bright future...A felon for a mother, a father he’ll never know. She leans forward. ELIZABETH You were supposed to be arrested that night at Lydia’s. But no...no...you had to wake up. You had to run. I should have used a stronger dose. Elizabeth begins circling Annie. ANNIE Why? ELIZABETH Why? Because...Tate needs to be with the person who can care for him best. And because I need a purpose again. Annie stares at her ex-mother-in-law in horror, speechless. ELIZABETH Tate and I were happy for two and a half years. He was my perfect little companion... And then you get out... and they rip him from my life like...he was a loaner! Like I hadn’t given him my whole heart! Elizabeth goes to the fireplace... a FRAMED PHOTO above it of her son Gerald. ELIZABETH You have no idea what it’s like to lose a son, do you? Annie says nothing, filled with rage. ELIZABETH No, you can’t- you can’t! Because Tate is still alive. Annie walks towards Elizabeth filled with rage. ANNIE You are not going to take him from me. Let him go. ELIZABETH What? Like you did that night? Let everything go? You’re entire family? ANNIE You know the accident wasn’t my fault...I was innocent... ELIZABETH Innocent. The only person in this house that deserves that term...Is playing down the hall without a care in the world...and I will do everything in my power to protect that innocence. Elizabeth grabs the fire poker as she back up. ELIZABETH You don’t have to do a thing, Annie. I’m gonna take care of everything. You just go to sleep... Annie watches Elizabeth but is too slow to react as Elizabeth knocks her out with the fire poker. Close on Annie falling onto the couch, unconscious. 01:58:40 BLACK ACT SIX 01:58:41 Slowly, Annie opens her eyes... finding her hands zip-tied behind her back. Marcus and Maynard are standing outside, by their car as Elizabeth joins them. She steps up to the back door, peers in. ANNIE Where’s my son? Where is Tate? ELIZABETH Tate’s safe and sound in his bed. Let’s just leave him in peace. ANNIE What are you doing? ELIZABETH Two and a half years I took care of that boy. And what do I get in return? Saturday mornings in the park! Annie stares, shocked by the true depths of her hatred. ELIZABETH Listen, I tried to remove you as gently, and considerately as possible...with the least amount of harm to all involved. But...you’ve forced my hand. ANNIE So they’ve been working for you this entire time... ELIZABETH Yeah...they were recommended by our friend, Hank Darrow. He represented Maynard here on a racketeering case. As discrete as he is ruthless. I am sorry, Annie. I tried so hard to make this painless. Annie works on breaking her binds. Taking a deep breath, Elizabeth turns to Maynard. ELIZABETH She can’t be found. I don’t want her to suffer. Just...smother her. That seems to me the most merciful... Elizabeth moves to the door as Maynard and Marcus climb into the car. Elizabeth opens the garage door for them, remorseful but relentless. The black Cadillac slowly rolls out of the garage. 02:00:26 Marcus and Maynard get out of the car and start pacing. MAYNARD You see the size of that house? 02:00:48 Intercuts between the car and the road. Annie listens to Maynard and Marcus discuss their plans. MARCUS Yeah. MAYNARD Had to be a hundred-grand worth of art just sitting in the living room. MARCUS Yeah, the old lady’s got bank. MAYNARD I knew she had money...just didn’t know that much...sorta makes you think though, don’t it? MARCUS About what? MAYNARD The cost of good labor these days. The price of doing business. MARCUS What are you saying? IN THE BACK SEAT...Annie’s almost done sawing through her bonds, preparing to make her stand. MAYNARD I’m saying – once we ditch this chick we go back to that house and get the kid. Find out how deep the old lady’s pockets really are. Then we get outta town before the whole thing blows up. On Annie in the backseat, we see Annie break her bonds. MARCUS Like a ransom? MAYNARD Well...Call it a performance bonus. MARCUS What-what if she doesn’t play along? MAYNARD Well...then I’ll play her a copy of our diciest conversations -- remind her who she’s been spilling her secrets to this whole time...and who’s been taking notes. Marcus nods and opens the trunk. Seen from inside the car, Annie prepares herself. WHAMM! ANNIE KICKS Maynard in the face, sending the big man sprawling to the dirt. Marcus looks down at Maynard hitting the ground. Lunging out the door, ANNIE kicks Maynard in the face once more, and springs off into the trees. Marcus stands frozen, watching her go. He’s finally spurred into action. Marcus runs into the trees. MAYNARD Get her! 02:01:48 Quick shots of feet and faces. Annie running. Marcus running. Maynard runs lagging behind. 02:01:58 Emerging from the trees, Annie stops short... She reaches the edge of a cold river. Gasping for breath, she looks over her shoulder... hearing her pursuers, closing in. With nowhere to run, she decides to cross the river. She quickly gets in knee deep. Seen from far away, she CROSSES THE RIVER. Seconds later... Maynard and Marcus emerge from the trees, stopping short at the edge of the river. They spot Annie who manages to make it across. They lock eyes. MARCUS What the hell? MAYNARD Well, go get her. MARCUS Don’t look at me like that, I’m not getting in there. MAYNARD Well, one of us has to... Marcus shakes his head no. MARCUS Not me...we’re not getting paid enough for that. Maynard nods in agreement. MAYNARD You’re right. We’ll just tell the old lady that the woman’s dead. Let’s go get our money. Marcus looks across the river. Annie is gone... he then turns and heads after his partner. 02:02:40 Shot outside of Billy’s house. 02:02:43 Billy stands in front of his laptop staring off into space... With a sigh, he slams down his beer. He stares at Maynard’s CASH and JEWELRY on the table in front of him. He then swings his gaze to the open web page on his laptop on the coffee table, a photo ANNIE smiling happily, holding Tate. Billy can’t stop staring at her - he’s falling for her and he knows it. He shakes his head no... Grabbing a bottle from a cupboard, he tosses two aspirins down his throat, swallows them with the last of his beer, and slams it down. He grabs his jacket, closes his laptop, grabs his keys, and charges out. CUT TO: 02:03:31 Back at Elizabeth’s. ELIZABETH Tate? 02:03:36 Elizabeth walks into Tate’s bedroom, seeing Tate’s small shape under the covers... ELIZABETH Are you really asleep? Or are you playing games with your grandma? Smiling, she throws off the covers... GASPS, seeing it’s just a pillow -- Tate’s not there. Elizabeth storms out of the bedroom. HALLWAY Elizabeth hurries back into the kitchen but before she reaches the end of the hallway, Maynard pops right in front of her. MAYNARD Looking for somebody? Elizabeth stops in her tracks -- shocked to see Maynard. ELIZABETH Oh my God! You scared me half to death! What are you doing back here? MAYNARD Here’s what’s gonna happen next. 02:04:05 A shot of Marcus sitting in the car with an unconscious Tate in the backseat. MAYNARD Marcus and I are gonna take the kid. We’re gonna text you an address in a bit. 02:04:10 Elizabeth looks as if she’s been punched in the gut. MAYNARD While you’re waiting, I want you to fill a bag with two-hundred grand in cash. Make me wait, miss a buck or two, involve the cops, and you’ll never see him again, and all your little secrets will spill... Maynard holds up his PHONE, plays a recording... ELIZABETH She can’t be found. I don’t want her to suffer. Smother her, maybe. It’s always seemed the most merciful to me. 02:04:37 BLACK ACT SEVEN 02:04:38 Annie limps down the shoulder of a long empty road, her pants sucking to her body like the skin of a fish, but determined to keep going at any cost... She hears a CAR ENGINE coming toward her... sees HEADLIGHTS approaching, casting her shadow down the road. She lifts both her arms up and gets right in the middle of the road, leaving the upcoming DRIVER no other choice than stopping. ANNIE Stop! Stop! Please! Stop! 02:04:53 Elizabeth hangs her framed artwork back on the wall. She transfers wads of cash into a small purse that’s open on the bed. 200 thousand dollars worth of money. 02:05:08 We see Billy’s truck pulling up to the house. 02:05:13 Elizabeth continues putting the money into a purse. After, she walks over to a wardrobe and with practiced hands, she draws liquid from a small bottle of solution into a syringe. 02:05:28 Billy gets out of his Truck holding a bouquet of flowers. He makes his way towards the front door. 02:05:36 Elizabeth continues drawing liquid into the syringe. 02:05:40 Billy is getting closer to the front door. 02:05:44 As Elizabeth puts the cap back on the syringe she’s startled by a knock at the door. 02:05:46 BILLY Hey. ELIZABETH Can I help you? BILLY I’m Billy. I’m Annie’s friend. You’re Elizabeth, right? We haven’t officially met yet. She looks at the flowers, arches an eyebrow. ELIZABETH Annie’s friend? BILLY Yeah-yeah. I’ve been trying to get a hold of her, she’s not answering her phone, and she mentioned she might be stopping by here. Um...so I... Came to apologize. Suspicious at first, Elizabeth relaxes, realizing Billy doesn’t know about her yet. She forces on a benign, grandmotherly smile. ELIZABETH Oh, isn’t that sweet! I’m sure she’ll be touched. But I’m afraid she-she’s not here right now. BILLY Oh...She didn’t uh...she didn’t stop by with her son? She’s not in here? ELIZABETH I-I’m fairly certain I would have noticed! Um...There’s nothing wrong, is there? I mean, she’s not in any trouble? She’s just been acting very strange these past days... Billy hesitates, not wanting to reveal too much, a little put off by Elizabeth’s overt friendliness, but trying to make a good impression. BILLY Um...Yeah, you know, I think she’d just wanna explain that herself. ELIZABETH Well, can I relay a message to her? I’m actually on my way out to see her. BILLY Oh, you are? Where is she? Elizabeth searches her pockets for her phone. ELIZABETH Uh...well, I-I have the address, but um... She looks at her phone. Elizabeth hesitates, pretending to be conflicted. ELIZABETH I’m not sure that I should be telling you this, but she’s afraid that Tate isn’t safe here. She thinks someone’s following her. And she’s absolutely adamant. She’s worked herself up, so I-I don’t want to fan the flames. BILLY Um...I’ve got my truck...so, if you’re going to see her I could just give you a lift. ELIZABETH Well, I know she’d want me to be very discrete about this, so... BILLY Elizabeth, you gotta help me out here...I um...I really let Annie down today, and I’m just...trying to make it right. You know? ELIZABETH Well, I’ve always trusted her judgement in matters like this so, um... Yes...Let’s go and see that daughter-in-law of mine. Billy sighs with relief. ELIZABETH Just give me a second. BILLY Yeah, yeah. Billy waits while Elizabeth closes the door. 02:07:43 Annie stands in the dark. Hank Darrow walks in wearing pajamas - he’s seemingly heard something coming from the main floor - he scans the room... and notices something on the floor. Wet clothes. Annie turns the light on, startling Hank. Annie wears an oversized sweater as she looks at Hank with an accusatory stare. ANNIE I was just about to come and get you. HANK Annie, what are you doing here? Annie clasps Hanks car keys in her hands. HANK Wait...what happened to you? Are you wearing my clothes? ANNIE Did you know Elizabeth wanted Tate? HANK I have no idea what you’re talking about! Has something happened to Tate? ANNIE You tell me...I mean, I tried to beat her thugs back to her place but they had already taken him. Why didn’t you tell me you were working for her? Hank wavers, a flash of guilt he quickly shakes off. HANK She commissioned my services over a year ago. My hands were tied. It’s just business, Annie. ANNIE Did you know that Samuel Primm and the officer that arrested me were childhood friends? She can tell by his shocked face this is news to Hank. ANNIE So this entire time you were just pretending to help me. HANK You should know, Annie... The police found a match to the fingerprints they found at Lydia Mosley’ house. You are already in the system... ANNIE So they know I was there... HANK So you need to think this through very carefully. Think about what’s best for Tate. I can take you to the station myself, make sure things go smoothly when you turn yourself in. ANNIE I have no intention of turning myself in. HANK Annie -- this has gone too far, Yeah? For too long. I could spend the next three months under house arrest for what I’ve already done to help you. Now I’m calling the police... ANNIE Tell me where they went. HANK I have no clue, I swear. Annie moves back toward Hank. ANNIE What about a cabin? You know the man likes to hunt. He shrugs arrogantly. How should I know? the shrug says. Annie slams the marble trophy base on the desk again. ANNIE Tell me. Right now. HANK Okay. H-He has mortgage on a second property on County Road six. There’s some hunting cabins in that area. Annie considers this. HANK I had no idea this was gonna happen. I swear. Elizabeth was just worried about you – she was worried about your capacity to look after Tate. That’s all. Annie locks eyes with him. HANK So what happens now? You gonna keep digging this trench you’re in? Annie glares at Hank. ANNIE Oh...If I were you, I would lock the door behind me and I would take a good long hard look in the mirror...because that trench you just mentioned... you’re in it just as much as I am. With that, Annie disappears out the front door, leaving Hank with a concerned expression on his face. 02:10:21 Each step faster than the last, Annie enters Hank’s SUV. She closes the driver side door behind her. Takes a deep breath. She starts the engine and drives away. 02:10:37 BLACK ACT EIGHT 02:10:38 Billy’s truck travels along the dark road. 02:10:43 Billy drives. Elizabeth glances at him. Planning her next move. Her purse on her lap. She removes two bottles of water from it. Glances at him again. ELIZABETH Um...I bought a couple water bottles for the road. She puts Billy’s bottle in the cupholder next to Billy. Drinks from hers. Billy grins. Sweet old woman, he seems to think. BILLY Oh...thanks...um...I-I’m good. Elizabeth forces a smile. Not the answer she was hoping for. They remain silent. Billy drives. She glances at his bottle. Then she glances at him. Camera creeps in on the bottle. The one Elizabeth wanted him to drink. 02:11:07 Maynard and Marcus sit at a folding table playing cards. Maynard phone vibrates. He reads a T MAYNARD She’s got the cash. Money’s on the way. Is he still sleeping? Marcus glances over his shoulder... at TATE, asleep on a blue couch not far from them. MARCUS Yeah...Think we gave him too much of that stuff? MAYNARD As long as he’s still breathing. How do we know she’s gonna keep her word? What if she decides to call the cops or something? MAYNARD She won’t call the cops. We’ve got way too much dirt on her. We’re holding all the cards. MARCUS So what are we gonna do with him, then? After? MAYNARD I don’t know... Maybe I’ll adopt. Marcus stares at him wondering if he’s serious. Maynard smiles letting him know he’s not. Marcus laughs. Yep, that would be a ridiculous idea. 02:12:17 BILLY I don’t understand...What’s Annie doing out here? ELIZABETH That’s a question you’ll have to ask her yourself. Billy exits the truck. 02:12:35 Elizabeth grabs the crowbar that was sticking out from under the driver’s seat. She puts a fake smile on as Billy comes around to open the door for her. 02:12:41 Billy opens the door for Elizabeth. BILLY Hey, can I help you? ELIZABETH No, I’m good. Thank you. BILLY You sure? ELIZABETH Yeah, yeah. BILLY Alright, just be careful there. ELIZABETH Yeah. BILLY Okay... Billy turns towards the cabin’s front entrance. He knows something isn’t right. He starts walking towards the front door, but doesn’t see Elizabeth sneaking up behind him, and then -- WHAMM! Elizabeth clubs the back of his head with the crowbar, sending him to the ground, unconscious. ELIZABETH Sorry, Billy – Annie isn’t here. But... You should have drank the water, this would have been a lot less painful. She then leaves him unconscious on the ground by the front balcony. She then marches towards the hunting cabin. Carrying a duffel bag, Elizabeth hesitates at the door, takes a deep breath... then KNOCKS. Seconds later, Maynard opens it. He looks her up and down, checks over her shoulder, making sure she’s alone. MAYNARD You got it? Elizabeth nods. ELIZABETH Yeah. MAYNARD Come on in. He opens the door for Elizabeth to enter... 02:13:34 Elizabeth walks in clutching the bag to her chest. She spots Tate sleeping on the blue couch nearby. ELIZABETH Tate! Elizabeth steps towards him -- but Maynard blocks her way. MAYNARD Let’s see what you brought us first. He holds out his hand. Reluctantly, Elizabeth hands over the bag. MAYNARD How’d you get the money so fast, anyway? ELIZABETH I have a safe. Emergency funds. Just please, let me take back Tate? Bringing the bag over to Marcus. MAYNARD Count it. 02:13:54 Annie parks the SUV she took from Hank’s house on a parallel road. She gets out of her car and sneaks through the narrow forest. 02:14:45 Annie spots Billy’s pickup, wonders what he’s doing here. Looks around. Can’t see Billy on the ground by the front balcony from where she stands. Peeking through one of the cabin’s side door from under the balcony, she sees TATE asleep on the blue couch, in a sleeping bag. And Elizabeth with Maynard and Marcus... COUNTING THE MONEY. She looks around, tries to come up with a plan. She runs behind the cabin. 02:15:22 Marcus continues counting the money. Elizabeth stands off to the side, watching. Close up on her hand behind her back holding a syringe. Ready to make a move. 02:15:33 Annie sneaks over to the car and sets the car alarm off. 02:15:39 They hear the CAR ALARM outside. Maynard and Marcus glance at each other then both stare accusingly at Elizabeth. MAYNARD What’s going on? 02:15:42 Annie gets low and hides. Marcus barges out the door and looks around. He runs around. Annie waits until he’s out of sight, and then makes her move. Annie runs over to the cabin and opens the door. 02:16:10 Annie comes in through the side door. Maynard turns and sees her. Annie stands on guard with her garden tool. MAYNARD Well look who decided to join us. Did you enjoy your cold swim? While he’s distracted, Elizabeth gathers her money. Annie waits for her moment. ANNIE SWINGS THE GARDEN HOE -- keeping Maynard at bay as he circles her, staying just out of reach, smiling. Annie swings again -- but this time Maynard grabs the handle, pulls her closer, smiling. Elizabeth seizes the occasion. She grabs the bag, then her grandson and makes a run for the side door. 02:16:38 Elizabeth carries a sleeping Tate past a still unconscious Billy over to the truck. She places her bag on the ground as she opens the door for Tate. ELIZABETH In the seat... 02:16:52 Elizabeth places Tate in the back of the truck. ELIZABETH ...Perfect 02:16:54 Elizabeth closes the door. She doesn’t see Marcus standing right behind her. MARCUS Looking for this? Annie gasps. Marcus begins to strangle her. 02:16:59 Annie grips the garden hoe with both hands, Maynard smiles thinking that he has Annie right where he wants her. Annie knees him in the crotch. He doubles over. She turns to run but he grabs her legs and she falls to the ground. 02:17:07 Elizabeth is being strangled by Marcus, but she manages to put her hand on the syringe inside her pocket. She then jabs the needle into his neck. Marcus drops on his knees... on top of the duffel bag. Elizabeth tries to get the bag from under him, but the man is too heavy. 02:17:27 Annie and Maynard struggle on the floor. Annie lands a punch that disorients Maynard. She takes the opportunity to pick the garden hoe up and smash it over his head. It breaks. 02:17:33 Elizabeth glances up at the noise. She grunts and decides to leave the duffel bag behind. All that matters is her grandson. 02:17:39 Annie looks around the cabin for her son. ANNIE Tate? Catching her breath, she shoves Maynard’s body over and grabs his cell phone. Pockets it. She runs for the door. 02:17:56 Annie runs outside. 02:17:57 Elizabeth sees Annie. She hits the gas. 02:17:59 Staring after Elizabeth’s fleeing TAILLIGHTS... Annie takes off in a sprint. ANNIE Hey! No! 02:18:00 Elizabeth speeds out of the lot... Backwards Annie chasing her. ANNIE No! 02:18:03 Annie watches the headlights as Elizabeth backs up and out of the driveway. ANNIE NO! Annie turns to run back down the driveway. BILLY Annie? Annie turns in disbelief... seeing Billy on the ground. She runs up to him. ANNIE Billy? I don’t know what you’re doing here, but I’m glad to see you. He has a hard time getting back up. Annie helps him. 02:18:19 Billy’s pickup truck powers down Rotary road. Elizabeth driving. One hand on the wheel, Elizabeth takes a long sip from the WATER BOTTLE beside her. 02:18:24 Billy spots the duffel bag under Marcus. He pushes him over, grabs the bag and runs into the narrow forest with Annie. 02:18:33 BLACK ACT NINE 02:18:34 Annie drives pedal to metal, Billy staring out the window at the passing road. ANNIE I trusted her... I was so stupid. BILLY No, Annie... Annie, I screwed up. I shouldn’t have let you go off on your own. I just... 02:18:51 Annie glances over at Billy, confused. BILLY ...had no idea what you’d be walking into. ANNIE But how did you find me? BILLY I was coming to apologize...and then I ran into your mother-in-law. She told me that I could find you out here. Annie...We’re gonna get your boy back. Taking a deep breath, Annie watches the road, hopeful. 02:19:13 Elizabeth drives Billy’s truck down the road. ELIZABETH Not too far to go. 02:19:20 Elizabeth talks to a groggy Tate. ELIZABETH Just a few more hours, and then we’ll stop for the night, okay? 02:19:25 ON ELIZABETH With a smile on her face. She glances back at a sleeping Tate. ELIZABETH We have so much to look forward to, Sweetheart. This is our adventure-- just you and me. Oh, we’re going to have so much... fun... 02:19:43 Close-up on the waters Elizabeth brought earlier... Staring out at the pavement ahead, Elizabeth begins to feel drowsy, eyelids getting heavy. She yawns. Slowly, she starts drifting to the right... her eyes closing... until... 02:19:46 Elizabeth startles awake. She realizes she nodded off. Billy’s truck comes to a halt . 02:20:14 Intercutting shots. Pulse racing from the near-accident, her eyes fall on the WATER BOTTLE on the passenger seat. She picks it up, stares at it a moment, realizing the truth with horror... She stares at it a moment, realizing the truth with horror... ELIZABETH No...No-no-no-no-no! I can’t believe I did that! How could I be so stupid! Tate rubs his sleepy eyes. Slowly, Tate opens his eyes, coming awake, groggy... TATE Grandma? Where are we...? Elizabeth stares at him like a precious thing, tears falling. ELIZABETH Don’t you worry, Honey -- Mommy’s just taking you on a little trip. Tate stares at his grandmother, confused. TATE You’re not my mother... You’re grandma! Elizabeth stares at him a moment, a little angry, a little heart-broken...then collects herself. ELIZABETH Uh...look, honey, we’re gonna have to get out walk for a while. A still groggy Tate looks at his grandmother, confused. TATE Why? ELIZABETH Well...Because... Elizabeth struggles with consciousness. ELIZABETH This isn’t safe, and um...I don’t want anything bad to happen to you so... Tate still finds it hard to open his eyes. ELIZABETH ...we can’t stay here. TATE Why can’t we stay in the truck? ELIZABETH Because...I love you-you so much. I love you so so much. Whatever happens, I want you always to remember that. Alright? Grandma...loves you...so much. Elizabeth gets out of the truck. ELIZABETH Here, dear...here. She helps Tate out of the truck and start walking away. 02:21:32 Elizabeth begins to waver, about to collapse. Tate’s eye grow wide as he sees his grandmother get on all fours, on the ground. Appearing out of the darkness... Hank’s SUV rolls to a stop behind Billy’s idling pickup. Annie jumps out and runs over to the truck. 02:21:46 Annie opens the back door and sees that it’s empty. ANNIE He’s not here. 02:21:49 Annie looks around... so does Billy. He spots them. Walking down Rotary road. BILLY Over there. Over there! Annie takes off towards Tate. As Tate watches his grandmother struggle to stay conscious, he backs up in shock. TATE Grandma? As he starts backing up into the road, a pickup truck makes its way down the road. Fast. ANNIE Tate!! TATE!! ON TATE Annie grabs Tate and pulls him out of the road as the truck swerves. Billy sighs with relief as he watches. Annie lifts him into her arms. The truck drives by. Despite her obvious drowsiness, Elizabeth manages to yell at her ex-daughter-in-law. ELIZABETH Was it so wrong... to want to give him everything? Elizabeth starts to fade, her brief final burst of adrenaline subsiding... ELIZABETH To want him happy... to have it... all? Elizabeth drops to her knees... and then on all fours. Her vision blurred. Completely ignoring her, Annie, Billy and Tate walk back toward the pickup and Hank’s SUV. Annie places Tate in the back seat of Hank’s SUV, straps him in securely... ANNIE We’re gonna be right back, okay? Just stay here. She closes the door. BILLY So? What now? Call the cops? Try to clear your name? She holds up Maynard’s phone, plays the recording... VOICE OF ELIZABETH She can’t be found. I don’t want her to suffer. Smother her, maybe. It’s always seemed the most merciful to me. Pocketing the phone. ANNIE I think I’m gonna lay low...for a little while...let the truth work itself out. BILLY Lay low, huh? Sound like a vacation. ANNIE Yeah... BILLY Vacation sounds...like a really good idea to me. I could use one of those right about now. Annie smiles at him, liking the idea. ANNIE Yeah? BILLY Yeah. I don’t suppose you, uh...could use a little company? ANNIE Hold that thought...There’s just thing I gotta do first. 02:23:33 Annie grabs a pen and paper from the truck’s glove compartment, writes something down with the sharpie, finds a roll of duct-tape... and leaves. 02:23:53 Annie runs towards Elizabeth. Annie zip ties both Elizabeth’s ankles and wrists. The woman is fighting as hard as she can to stay awake. ANNIE You know...You said you wanted to give him everything... Then you tried to take away his own mother... Annie duct tapes something to her chest - we can’t see what it is right now. ANNIE You never thought I was good enough. Not for Gerald. Not for Tate...But I am, and I am never going to let anything happen to him. And then she leaves. We stay on Elizabeth... and creep away from her to reveal the NOTE taped to her chest. We focus on the following underlined words: ‘Dear Highway Patrol, my name is Elizabeth Hale. I am a murderer who drugs my victims . My co-conspirators are Hank Darrow, Maynard Barnes and Marcus Fain. With a churning of gravel, Billy’s truck speeds away... followed by Hank’s SUV. Both vehicles drive away. 02:24:54 On a gorgeous day in an idyllic picnic spot on Middle Cove beach, Tate sits playing near the water, creating a magnificent Inukshuk rock stacking. Sitting on foldable chairs with a warm blanket by their beach fire, Annie and Billy are drinking coffee from their thermos. Annie is reading an article on her phone. ANNIE Noted philanthropist Elizabeth Hale was found guilty. Along with her co-conspirators, Hank Darrow, Maynard Barnes and Marcus Fain of first-degree murder and the attempted abduction of her eight-year-old grandson. BILLY The truth worked itself out. ANNIE Yeah...Well, I mean, once the police actually started looking into everything there was more than enough evidence. I’m just glad it’s over. BILLY I could get used to this... He sends Annie a smile, one she returns. She leans in. ANNIE Come here... They kiss. A vehicle shows up behind them. Parks right next to Billy’s pickup truck. The driver is a WOMAN. She’s alone. ANNIE Oh, you think she’s gonna steal your truck? BILLY I dunno... but she’s kinda cute though. If she manages to get in I’ll offer to give her a lift. Annie knows he’s teasing. Teases back. ANNIE Oh yeah? Are you gonna go wave her crowbar at her? Give her some of your famous advice? Hey, call a cab. Hop a bus. Grand theft auto? Probably not your best bet. BILLY That was a good line, It worked on you... She smiles. Yes it did. ANNIE We’ll see... She gazes out over at Tate. But as Tate’s Inukshuk crumples down like a Jenga tower, seeing the obvious disappointment in the boy’s eyes, both Billy and Annie run to his rescue. And we DRONE UP to reveal Middle Cove in all its splendor as Billy and Annie help Tate build his Inukshuk back up. They couldn’t be happier right now. 02:26:30 BLACK 02:26:31 CREDITS
