ANNA CLARE DEVIN DOC DONALD JAKE MATTI MINISTER PHOTOGRAPHER PRETTY_WAITRESS TJ TOUR_MANAGER DOC Push it into bay three! Arlene, why don’t you go down to the cafe and get something to warm your bones, on me? Can’t have you waiting out in this cold. We’ll get your car up and running in no time. DOC Don’t worry, Mr. Henderson. Your car should be about done. I got my best mechanic on it. DOC Matti -- status update? MATTI Lookin’ good Pop. DOC Alright. Start’er up! DOC Listen to that beauty purr. I’d have her pull it round front, but she’s not old enough for a driver’s license. MATTI Catch! DOC Let us know if there’s anything else we can do for ya. DOC Now Matti, get goin’. Can’t be late for school. DOC That’s my girl. MATTI Raise the voltage two point five percent. MATTI The weight distribution is off balance. Update the log for-- MATTI Alright, I’m calling it. Time of death? 1:15. Looks like we worked overtime again. We should’ve seen if we could get this thing to make smoothies then at least we’d have lunch. DONALD Can I get everyone’s attention? I’ve got some exciting news. A position has opened up on the design team. DONALD Now, I know this is something you all want, but there was one person who instantly came to mind. DONALD I think you all can agree that when you consider work ethic, performance -- DONALD Not to mention the best short stop on the company softball team. MATTI No... not -- DONALD Brendan! DONALD Alright. Congrats, Brendan! We are going to miss you. So sad. So, so sad to see you go. MATTI Donald. DONALD Mattilynn. What’s up? MATTI Why did Brendan get the promotion instead of me? DONALD Well-- MATTI I have the highest QC numbers this department has ever seen, and he-- DONALD --is terrible. MATTI What? DONALD But promoting him is so much easier than firing him. Now he’s not my problem anymore. And he’ll stop bringing down the department. MATTI I only took this job because you told me in my interview that it was a stepping stone, that eventually I’d get the chance not just to product test but to design. DONALD I remember. MATTI I’ve saved this company millions of dollars from potential recalls and lawsuits. I could easily get a higher paying job somewhere else. DONALD Listen, when you get back from your vacation we’ll discuss it. MATTI When I get back it has to be more than just a discussion. If you don’t have an offer for me, I’ll have to look for a job at our competition. DONALD I hear you. MATTI Good. MATTI Hello? CLARE Hey! How’s my favorite sister? MATTI Very funny, I’m your only sister. How’s my favorite bride to be? CLARE Good! Things are just a little all over the place. Wedding planning is hard. But I’m so excited to see you. MATTI Me too. We fly out tomorrow night. CLARE I can finally meet the famous Devin. Put a face to a name. MATTI And it’s such a handsome face. CLARE It better be. My expectations are very high. Dad’s excited too since we’ve heard such great things about him. MATTI Trust me, he will exceed all expectations. CLARE Yes. See you guys tomorrow! Eee! Oh! And as maid of honor you have to help me write my vows. I’m struggling. MATTI Okay, I will. Love you. Bye. CLARE Love you. Bye. MATTI I’m glad we could do this. We’ve both been working too hard. DEVIN We’re having a setback with one of the investors, and now some of the others are threatening to pull out. MATTI That sounds tough. But you always know what to do. DEVIN Yeah, I’m not worried. I’ve worked my way out of much worse places. MATTI That’s why you’re the youngest Ceo to ever run the company. Written up in all the trades. DEVIN It’s nothing. MATTI My day at work was -- PRETTY WAITRESS Hi Mr. Smith. So good to see you again. DEVIN Thanks. PRETTY WAITRESS We saved you the best table in the restaurant for your special night. DEVIN I see that, it’s lovely. PRETTY WAITRESS And here’s some complimentary champagne. Do you know what you’d like to order? DEVIN Yes, we’d like to order two steaks, medium rare, and bring out the calamari, it’s the best in town. Sound good, Sweetheart? MATTI Are you excited to meet my family tomorrow? DEVIN Of course I’m excited to meet them. If they’re related to you, they have to be pretty special huh? It just won’t be tomorrow... MATTI What do you mean? We’ve had these plans for months. DEVIN I know, and I’m so sorry. I promise I’ll make it up to you, but I really need to be here right now. MATTI But it’s my sister’s wedding. They made special arrangements for us. DEVIN Give me your hand. DEVIN It’s just bad timing. It wouldn’t be good for the company if I was out of the city. I have to prioritize this so that we can have a great future together, right? MATTI Yeah. You’re right. I understand. MATTI Clare? MATTI Hello? MATTI Knock, knock. CLARE Matti! I didn’t even hear you come in, sorry! CLARE I’m so glad you’re here. I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever. MATTI I know, me too. I’ve just been totally swamped. CLARE Working your little heart out. MATTI What I do best. MATTI You have a seating chart for the wedding? CLARE Yeah. MATTI What happened to my hippy sister who’s all about spontaneity and throwing caution to the wind? CLARE Planning a wedding has changed me. MATTI Bridezilla status? CLARE Not yet, but I can feel the transformation slowly taking hold. MATTI How’s it all going? CLARE It’s fine, but I feel like Tj isn’t involved enough. Just kind of distant lately. MATTI I’m sure it’s nothing. Just the usual pre-wedding stress, right? CLARE I guess. Anyway, where’s Devin? MATTI Umm... CLARE What? Off Matti’s embarrassed look... CLARE I’m sorry he can’t come. You must be really disappointed. MATTI I’m sad you don’t get to meet him, but at this point in his career work has to come first. CLARE I understand. I just hope he makes you a priority sometimes too... MATTI Oh he does. Trust me he’s the kindest, sweetest, most romantic guy I’ve ever met. And on top of that he’s smart, established, handsome... He’s got everything I ever wanted. I look up to him. I really do. CLARE You deserve all of that. You’re a total catch. Any guy who doesn’t see that is crazy. MATTI Thanks, sweetie. Hey, where’s Dad? CLARE Probably at the shop. I’d give you a ride into town, but I’m not supposed to meet Tj for a couple of hours. MATTI I’ll just cab it. CLARE I’d say you could take mom’s old truck, but dad sold it. Can you believe it? We used to have so much fun driving that, remember? MATTI Thing wouldn’t start anyway. It’s been years since the engine’s even been turned on. Probably good he got rid of it. CLARE You were the only one who could ever get it to start. MATTI You loved that truck. CLARE We loved it. MATTI See you in a few? CLARE I’ll be here. MATTI Start ’er up! JAKE Owwww! MATTI Oh! I’m sorry, I thought -- MATTI Sorry, I hope you’re okay. I thought you were -- I’m just looking for my Dad. JAKE Yeah. You’re Matti Dupree... Doc’s daughter. MATTI Want some ice? Jake’s in pain but tries to act tough. JAKE Huh? No. Nah, I’m fine. You remember me? MATTI (struggling) Umm... JAKE Jake Henderson... Mr. Henderson’s son. From over in Leaverton. MATTI Oh yeah! Your dad came to the shop all the time. He was always having trouble with his car. JAKE So much so that I decided to learn how to fix them. MATTI How long have you been a grease monkey? JAKE Been a wrench head since high school. MATTI Oh yeah? How’d you get into it? JAKE I came and worked at the shop here a couple times when your dad needed a hand. I love how the inside of a car is like a giant puzzle and you find what’s not working and you fix it. I guess I just love fixing things in general. It’s the simplest most rewarding thing, don’t you think? MATTI Yeah... Did you say you worked at the shop? I don’t think... JAKE After college I moved around quite a bit. I wanted to learn the business from the ground up before taking over my own shop. MATTI You must be really good by now. JAKE Your dad says I’m almost better than you. MATTI I’m a product engineer now. It’s been years since I’ve done any repairs, so you’d better be better than me. JAKE I don’t know... you’re kind of a legend around here. Matti Dupree: fixing carbeurators before she could drive. I know I’m impressed. MATTI I better go find my dad. JAKE Yeah, we’ll have plenty of time to catch up with all the wedding festivities. MATTI Oh, you’re going to the wedding? JAKE Going? I’m the best man. Best man and maid of honor right here. JAKE See you tonight. MATTI Tonight? JAKE Yeah, dinner. Your dad invited me. MATTI Oh. Okay... well, see you then. TJ We’re going to have to move the council meeting to Thursday. --no, it is not because he wants to play golf instead. TJ Alright, I’ll put it in the books. You have a good day, sir. Bye. Sorry honey, the council meeting starts in less than an hour and if I don’t set out the materials for the new roadwork budget, the Mayor will never forgive me. CLARE An Executive Assistant’s work is never done. TJ Now, where were we? CLARE We were putting the Dryers at table four. TJ We can’t. They’re Democrats, and my aunt and uncle are staunch Republicans. TJ They’ll get into a political debate which will spill over to table two, where my boss is sitting. Then the next thing you know, someone will find out he’s the Mayor and try to talk their way out of a parking ticket. TJ What? It’s happened before. CLARE He’s the Mayor. People are always going to complain to him about something. TJ That’s true. Why do we even need a seating chart? You were the one who said we should just let everyone sit where they want. CLARE I was wrong. If you were a little more involved you’d see how hard it is. TJ I thought this was the bride’s day... I can definitely get more involved. I was just giving you space so you could do what you wanted. CLARE I don’t even know what I want. TJ Everything’s going to be fine. It’s a wedding! You know, a joyous union between two people who love each other? CLARE I hope you’re right. I’m just nervous. And I didn’t think so many people would RSVP yes and now that it’s getting so big, we might need to readjust the budget and it’s happening so soon and-- and-- TJ Breathe. We’ll take a closer look at the budget and it’ll all sort itself out. CLARE This is why I love you. You always know the right thing to say to make me feel better. CLARE How about this? We’ll put anyone who might start an argument at table six... which is directly in front of the band. It’ll be so loud they won’t even be able to hear each other talk. TJ Then put my entire family at table six. CLARE Yeah. That sounds right. DOC Matti! Welcome home, sweetie. MATTI Hey Dad. MATTI Ran into Jake. I was surprised you weren’t in your old grease-covered overalls next to him. DOC Jake’s lead mechanic now and I’m grooming him to take over the shop. I’m just overseeing things til he’s ready to run the whole shebang. MATTI Really? DOC Yeah... I’m ready to have some time off. MATTI I had no idea. Want to get a drink next door? It’s on Jake... DOC Isn’t he great? DOC It’s not the same around here without you. MATTI Dad, you and mom were the ones who pushed me to get an education. You can’t complain now that I’m out in the world. DOC You’re right. I just miss you. MATTI How’s Clare doing? I’m not used to seeing her so stressed out. She’s always been the carefree one. DOC I don’t know. I’m not much of a wedding planner, so she’s been shouldering all of it. MATTI Madoc Dupree... Not much of a wedding planner? Shocker. DOC I think she feels like she’s on her own with this. Your mother... she would have been great at it... MATTI Don’t worry, Dad. That’s why I’m here. I’m on it. JAKE Can we help? CLARE You’re sweet, but ol’ Doc and I got it covered. MATTI I can’t remember the last time I had home-made corn bread. It’s so good. DOC Yeah we haven’t had any since -- Tuesday? MATTI Sure, rub it in. CLARE Hey, if you lived closer, I’d make it for ya all the time. MATTI I know. DOC You could also learn how to cook. TJ Clare could show you... She makes a mean ratatouille. CLARE What? I’ve never made that... TJ I know. I just like the word. MATTI I spend all day experimenting in the lab. The last thing I want to do is come home and experiment in the kitchen. DOC Then you better marry someone who does. Cook, I mean. CLARE Dad. DOC Sorry. I didn’t mean to bring up -- MATTI It’s fine. My boyfriend was supposed to come this week to meet everyone and be my date to the wedding. JAKE Boyfriend? MATTI Yeah. He’s great. JAKE Why isn’t he here? MATTI He just has a lot on his plate right now. He’s the ceo of a tech company and... JAKE Shame that he’s missing the wedding. CLARE Oh, that’s okay. We still haven’t finalized the seating arrangements. No biggie. TJ Plus this just means more time for the two of you to get acquainted and do maid of honor, best man stuff together... right? CLARE That’s right. DOC You two will have lots of fun. Were we expecting someone? CLARE I’ll get it. CLARE It’s for you. From Devin. CLARE What’s it say?? MATTI Nothing. Just that he’s thinking of me. MATTI Hey, it’s me. Thank you so much for the flowers. They’re beautiful. I know you’re probably still at the office. It’s so weird being back home... Apparently I have to do all these wedding activities with the best man, and he’s just way too enthusiastic... I shouldn’t be unloading on you. You’ve got enough to think about. Anyway, call me back if you get a spare moment. Good luck at work, even though I know you don’t need it. Love you. CLARE My dad can’t afford all this. TJ How did it get so out of hand? CLARE Weddings are expensive, Tj. TJ But that’s why we set a budget. Why didn’t you tell me it was this bad? CLARE Maybe I was in denial, I don’t know. And you kept inviting people even after we sent the invitations out... didn’t you think that’d effect the budget? TJ Clare, they’re important contacts. People I met through the mayor... what am I supposed to do? CLARE I get it... but how are we going to pay for all this? CLARE I guess I can try to do a promotional thing at the art studio. But that’ll barely make a dent. TJ We’re just going to have to cut back. You’re so crafty and artistic, maybe we could work together and make some things instead of paying people to do it. CLARE Yeah I guess. There’s just a lot left... TJ It might not be the kind of wedding you see on Tv, but it’ll still be great. Let’s just keep brainstorming. We’ll figure it out, okay? CLARE Okay. MATTI Where are the guests going to enter? CLARE From the east side. That will give the best view of the sunset. MATTI Okay, got it. CLARE Here’s a light sketch of how I imagined it to look. MATTI A light sketch? That belongs in a museum. CLARE All my creative energy is going towards the wedding. MATTI How’s the studio? CLARE I haven’t been teaching many classes... I’ve just been overwhelmed with all of this. MATTI Clare, the studio is your life. You’ve got to take some time for yourself. Try to enjoy the process and not make it work. CLARE The dance floor will be here in the center, with tables on both sides. MATTI Okay. CLARE And the band will be on a stage, which we’ll have to set up over there. CLARE What’d ya think? MATTI Sounds great. Seems like you’ve got it all figured out. MATTI What? What’s wrong? CLARE Nothing. MATTI You can tell me. CLARE Okay. Promise not to tell Dad? MATTI Are these estimates for the wedding? CLARE Yeah, the ones I haven’t shown Dad. MATTI He can’t afford all this. CLARE I know. That’s why I haven’t shown him... but I’m losing time and I haven’t made reservations, because... MATTI You haven’t gotten flowers yet... or booked a caterer? MATTI What are you going to do? CLARE I don’t know. I guess I don’t need a big wedding. We can just go to the courthouse and have a small potluck in the backyard or -- MATTI No. I’ve seen how much work you’ve put into this. We just have to problem solve. TJ I needed this. JAKE Always good to have some peace and quiet. TJ Yeah, things have gotten a bit crazy with the wedding coming up. JAKE It’s happening so soon. Right around the corner. TJ Don’t remind me. JAKE Are you having second thoughts? TJ No, no. Nothing like that. It’s just a lot of stress. And Clare went over our budget and we have to make it work and time’s running out. Plus the mayor’s schedule is packed right now... Just have a lot on my plate. JAKE Let me help. It’s kind of my job as best man. TJ Is it? I just thought your only job was to tell an embarrassing toast at the reception. JAKE Well yeah, that too. Don’t you worry about that... have some great stories up my sleeve. TJ Believe me, that’s what I’m worried about. MATTI I can’t believe Clare actually believed you would sell this. DOC She’s so consumed with the wedding she wouldn’t notice if the house burnt down and she was in it. Now you sure you can fix this up yourself? Hasn’t it been awhile since you worked on a car? MATTI Well, I have to look at it, go through the fundamentals, figure out why the engine won’t start... you know the drill. DOC I sure do. MATTI I thought you were only doing administrative stuff now. DOC I am. Hang on, let’s get you some help. MATTI Dad, I don’t need his help. I can do it on my-- DOC Jake! Jake! JAKE What’s up... Doc? Sorry. Couldn’t help myself. DOC Matti could use a hand getting this old beauty back up and running again. I’ll leave you two to get to work. JAKE I’ll grab you a toolkit. MATTI Thanks. JAKE So... things are... uh... Are things going well with the wedding planning on your end? MATTI Yeah... there have been a few hiccups here and there but they seem to be managing... why? What about on your end? JAKE Yeah, yeah. Same. MATTI He told you, didn’t he? JAKE Money problems... Yeah. MATTI Yeah. JAKE We have to do something. MATTI We? JAKE Yeah, us. The maid of honor and best man. MATTI You take the job seriously. JAKE Clare and Tj are my best friends and they deserve an amazing celebration. MATTI I did have one idea: Dad’s done a lot to help people in this town over the years so... JAKE ...maybe it’s time to cash in some favors? MATTI Exactly. JAKE I want to help. You only know the people who helped your dad when you were a kid... I know the new people. I think you kinda need me. MATTI Fair enough. But I have to swear you to silence. MATTI This place is just how I remembered. JAKE I’ve never been in here. MATTI You’ve never gotten a girl flowers? JAKE Of course I have, but my mom has a garden out back so I usually stop by her place and she helps me pick the best ones. She likes doing it. JAKE What? MATTI Nothing. JAKE What kind do you like? MATTI For Clare’s wedding? JAKE No... which would you want at your wedding? To Devin... I assume... MATTI I guess I like sunflowers. There’s something always so cheerful about them. What about you? JAKE For my future wedding? MATTI Yeah. JAKE I’d have to say cacti. MATTI What? JAKE Succulents are the best. They live for a really long time and don’t require much work... like the kind of relationship I’d want with my future wife. A long lasting love that just feels right. MATTI No matter how much you love someone, relationships always take work. JAKE Yeah, but I think when you’re with your match, it doesn’t feel like work. What, don’t like my cactus analogy? MATTI I think I’ll take care of the floral arrangements, if you don’t mind. Otherwise we’ll end up with a pretty strange looking wedding. JAKE Yes, ma’am. ANNA Mattilyn! It’s so good to see you. Back in town for the wedding? MATTI Yes. ANNA So exciting isn’t it? Little Clare’s all grown up. And is this the boyfriend your dad’s told me so much about? MATTI Him? No. JAKE Me? No. ANNA Oh, you just looked -- I’m Anna. JAKE Jake. I’m Tj’s best man. ANNA Isn’t that great! So you two’ll be walking down the aisle together? MATTI We haven’t ironed out all the details yet. ANNA What can I do for you? MATTI I was hoping to ask for a favor since you’re an old friend of dad’s. ANNA Of course. Back when I just opened the shop he would fix my old delivery van every time it broke down. And now, thanks to good people like your dad, well, business is blooming. So how can I help? PHOTOGRAPHER Okay, why don’t you two change into your next outfit? JAKE Hey Dewey, how you doin’? PHOTOGRAPHER Hey... ? JAKE Jake from... PHOTOGRAPHER Oh, right from the auto shop. How are you? What’s up? JAKE ...remember that time you were in a pinch and Doc lent you those old cars for that fashion shoot? PHOTOGRAPHER Yeah. The editorial came out great. JAKE Glad to hear it. Well, something’s come up and we were hoping you could cut us a deal on... PHOTOGRAPHER You want me to cut a deal for Madoc Dupree? Are you kidding me? MATTI Just forget he asked... Come on, Jake. PHOTOGRAPHER I’m joking! How can I help? CLARE This is “Bride on a Budget.” There are a couple suggestions in here on ways to cut down. TJ Let me see... Bake your own wedding cake. Find a good tailor and copy a designer dress. Have a friend take the photos. Hmm, I think the best one is... TJ Baking our own cake. CLARE Have a friend take the photos. CLARE Who’s gonna bake the cake? I don’t know how to bake a cake! We have so many guests... that’s a lot of pressure, plus it’d have to be huge... TJ We could make cupcakes... or buy some from the store. That might be an easy option. CLARE I really wanted to have that classic photo of us cutting the cake. TJ That’s so traditional. CLARE Sometimes I like traditional. TJ Since when? I’m just worried the photos might not turn out that great if we have a friend taking them... CLARE I’m starting to feel like we’re not on the same page. TJ I just think we can have our cake and eat it too. Get it? CLARE Tj, this isn’t a time for lame jokes. TJ But you love my lame jokes. They always make you feel better. When did you become the serious one? CLARE I don’t know. JAKE So how’d I do? MATTI You did great. JAKE You needed me. Come on, admit it. MATTI I did. And I really do appreciate it. You didn’t have to do all that. JAKE It was nothing. So what else is left? MATTI Looks like we just need the band. And I have an idea where we might find one. CLARE I owe you big time. I can’t thank you enough. MATTI Don’t thank me... it’s all because dad’s the nicest person ever. I kind of forgot how well-respected he is here. CLARE Cheers to having the best Dad in the world. CLARE Just you? Where’s Jake? TJ Sorry to disappoint. CLARE Oh, stop. TJ I invited Jake, but I guess he had a date tonight or something. CLARE Poor guy. MATTI What? Why poor guy? CLARE He just can’t seem to meet the right girl. MATTI That’s kind of funny considering the relationship advice he gave me earlier. CLARE It’s not funny, Matti! He’s a great guy. He brings freshly picked roses from his mother’s garden to like every date. How sweet is that? TJ I don’t think the man wants you sharing his secrets! MATTI No, it’s okay. He told me. TJ Oh yeah? You guys hang out today or something? MATTI Yeah, we just wanted to help out. TJ I don’t believe this... MATTI No, no, it wasn’t a big deal-- TJ ...he’s here! Turn around. CLARE Uh-oh. He still has the flowers... TJ Maybe the girl didn’t show. CLARE He must be so sad. Matti go ask him to dance. MATTI What? No. I have a boyfriend. CLARE So what? Just one harmless, friendly dance to cheer up Tj’s best man... TJ He’s definitely having a bad night. CLARE Come on, we’re gonna dance then. This band is awesome. CLARE Hi Jake, bye Jake. I’m forcing Tj to dance with me. TJ Gotta listen to my future wife. JAKE Go for it. MATTI Rough night? JAKE What? Oh -- these? MATTI Yeah. JAKE Got stood up. MATTI I’m sorry. Who was she? JAKE Just a girl I met online. It’s not a big deal. Happens all the time with these dating sites. MATTI Are you okay? JAKE Oh yeah, it’s just hard to meet the right person. MATTI Want to dance? JAKE Seriously? Don’t you think Devin would mind? MATTI No. He never gets jealous. He’d be happy I was trying to cheer you up, now come on. MATTI This feels weird. JAKE Oh sorry, we don’t have to-- MATTI No, not this. I mean being in the bar. I keep feeling like I’m going to get dragged out any minute. JAKE Why? Did you do something I should know about? Are you on the lam? MATTI No. I’m talking about when I was a teenager. Some of us used to try to sneak in here. And here I am, grownup... and I don’t know... it just feels wrong somehow. JAKE Fixing cars, sneaking into bars... who are you Mattilynn Dupree? MATTI Oh yeah, I’m a big mystery. JAKE Wait... all of that just rhymed. Fixing cars, sneaking into bars, Mattilynn Dupree, big mystery. MATTI What are you doing? JAKE That clearly warrants a high five. MATTI Okay, I take it back. This is weird, after all. MATTI Not much of a mystery though... just a normal girl. Pretty boring actually. JAKE I don’t think that’s true at all. MATTI Want to go outside? I need some fresh air. JAKE Sure. TOUR MANAGER I don’t know what to do. They gotta be at another gig across town later tonight. JAKE Hey sir. What seems to be the problem? Got the best auto mechanic in town at your service. TOUR MANAGER I’m not sure... I don’t know anything about cars... can you take a look? JAKE Who me? Oh... I was talking about her. She’s the best auto mechanic in town. TOUR MANAGER Good one. JAKE No, really. MATTI I know. Looks can be deceiving, right? TOUR MANAGER Oh sorry... would you mind taking a look for us? MATTI I don’t know. Jake’s a great mechanic too. Jake... help the guy out huh? JAKE Come on... I know you’re dying to get under that hood and figure out what’s wrong. MATTI No I’m not. Besides, I’m out of practice. I wouldn’t know where to start. JAKE Have a little faith in yourself. You’re Matti Dupree! And you’re working on the truck... MATTI That’s different. I can take my time. Besides I don’t want to ruin my clothes. JAKE Really? I know that’s not the reason. Come on. MATTI I appreciate what you’re doing, but no. Devin and I are supposed to Skype before midnight. JAKE Totally understand. Let me see what I can do. TOUR MANAGER Thank you. You’re a life saver. CLARE Sorry for being weird earlier. TJ That’s okay. Sorry if I was being weird or... CLARE No, no, you weren’t. Great band, huh? TJ Yeah. This might be your last dance as Ms. Dupree... soon you’ll be Mrs. Reynolds. CLARE What? I’m not taking your last name. TJ Oh. Okay, why not? CLARE I thought we talked about this. TJ No, I think I’d remember. CLARE I don’t think my identity or who I am should change just because we are getting married. TJ That’s not the point of a name change. The point is to show that you are a union... partners... a team... and eventually a family. I can’t believe you think you could lose your identity by marrying me. CLARE No, not by marrying you... just by changing my name... what it stands for. TJ I’m confused. You want a traditional wedding, with a traditional cake, and where the bride’s family pays for everything, but you don’t want to take my last name? CLARE Look, I didn’t think I believed in marriage until I met you. You’re not like any other guy I’ve ever met. I want to be married to you. I just not sure I want to be married to your name. Okay? TJ Alright, whatever makes you happy. CLARE Thank you. Are we okay? TJ Of course. I love you, Clare. I always want to be supportive of you. If you want to keep your last name, then I want that too. CLARE Thanks. TJ Clare Reynolds does sort of sound like a movie star name though... JAKE You guys ready to go? CLARE Yeah. TJ What happened to you? JAKE Some guy was having car trouble. TJ Jake Man to the rescue! JAKE Nah... it’s actually gonna take a little bit more time, but I didn’t want Matti to wait out in the cold anymore. She’s tired. CLARE Aw. That’s so sweet. TJ He’s my little sweetheart. CLARE Where is she? CLARE Is this your handiwork Jake? JAKE Just some light encouragement. MATTI Okay, try it now. TOUR MANAGER Awesome. Thank you! MATTI And take it easy on the downshifting. Brake pads are a lot cheaper than a new transmission. TOUR MANAGER Definitely will. JAKE I thought you said you were rusty. TOUR MANAGER How much do I owe you? MATTI Nothing. If your band will play my sister’s wedding next weekend. TOUR MANAGER I think we got ourselves a deal. CLARE And then you tie the card to the handle with a little twine-- CLARE And done. MATTI Super cute. How many do we need to make? CLARE Like... fifty... MATTI No! Don’t make me do it! CLARE It’ll be okay. I promise. MATTI It’s been a while since I stayed out that late. I usually just go straight home after work... and do more work. Right now I’m trying to figure out the maximum degree of torque before an engine turns its combustible elements like fuel into environmentally harmful-- CLARE Enough with the engineer talk, please I surrender. I’m just happy if you’re happy. Don’t you think Jake’s kinda cool, though? MATTI Yeah. He seems like a perfectly decent guy. MATTI What? How many times do I have to remind you people that I have a very serious boyfriend. CLARE I’ll believe it when I see it. MATTI Excuse me? CLARE I’ve never met him. How do I even know he’s real? MATTI Oh, hush. You’ll meet him. I promise. CLARE All I know is... Devin isn’t here, but Jake is. MATTI Even if Devin and I weren’t together... Jake and I... no. Just no. CLARE Why? Just humor me. MATTI For one thing... we’re very different. CLARE Tj and I are like polar opposites and it works great. Besides I think you and Jake have more in common than you might care to admit. MATTI He’s a local guy... I’m a city girl. CLARE Tj’s a local guy... MATTI I know, and that’s fine for you, because you live here and you like living here, but the last thing I want is a long distance relationship. CLARE Like... where the person is never there for you and you never see him...? MATTI Why are you giving me such a hard time about this? CLARE I guess because it’s my only wedding and I want to see him here supporting you and becoming part of the family. MATTI Clare, the wedding’s important, it’s huge. But not everything is about you. Devin has a life beyond all this. CLARE You’re right. I’m sorry. Forget it. Let’s finish these lanterns... MATTI I can’t. CLARE Why? MATTI My hands are tied. I cannot execute your evil plan. JAKE Want to see the inside of the car? ...here is where the anti-freeze and coolant goes... that’s what helps the air conditioner, to keep you nice and cool when it’s hot out. This is the oil, which lubricates the engine. Kind of like how when you drink water you can scream really loudly. DOC We a school now too, not just a body shop? JAKE I think this kid has the bug. DOC The one you had? JAKE Yeah. I can spot it from a mile away. CLARE You sure you don’t want to come with? MATTI No, you enjoy. I’m just gonna hang around the house. CLARE Okay. MATTI I’m really glad you’re going back into the studio. You need this. And I’m sure your students miss you! CLARE Yeah, it’ll be nice to just play for a couple hours. We’re going to turn toilet paper rolls into floral wall art. MATTI I’m having a hard time envisioning that, but I trust you. You always have the most innovative assignments. CLARE Yeah. I do, don’t I? Love you. MATTI Love you too. DOC How you feeling about the takeover? Everything good? JAKE Yeah. I worry about you though. You’ve been living under a car... Get it? Like living under a rock... DOC Yeah, I get it. Just wasn’t funny. JAKE I thought telling corny jokes was part of the job description. DOC That’s why I hired you. The phone rings. Doc picks up. DOC Dupree Auto Shop. Oh hey Honey. Uh huh. You got it. He hangs up. Smiles at Jake. DOC Matti’s on her way over. She’s ready for your help. MATTI Thanks. JAKE Not a problem. Happy to be here. What made you change your mind? MATTI The tour bus. You did a slow job on purpose. You wanted me to finish it. JAKE Was it that obvious? MATTI Not until I got under the hood. JAKE Well it worked didn’t it? Got you to trust your instincts again? MATTI I guess so. You’re a good mechanic, and this is definitely a two person job. JAKE Yeah. Now that we’ve got a better angle... looks pretty bad. Worse than I thought. MATTI The timing chain is shot. Can’t risk having a valve hit the piston. Jake coughs. JAKE And it’s super dusty. What? It is. It’ll take hours to fix. MATTI I’ll get some fuel. Want anything? JAKE Make mine unleaded. MATTI Decaf, seriously? What’s the point? You might as well just drink chocolate milk. JAKE Actually that sounds awesome. I’ll have chocolate milk. MATTI Can I get a large drip, a double shot americano... ... And a chocolate milk. MATTI Actually... can you put the chocolate milk in a kiddie cup? MATTI You done? MATTI Stop slurpin’ and let’s get to workin’. Grab your ratchet. DOC Clare! What are you doing here? CLARE Just finished my class, thought I’d stop by with some lunch. I brought some for Jake, too. DOC That’s nice of you. But you know what? He’s really in a groove, he doesn’t want any disruptions. CLARE Okay. I’ll just leave these then. DOC You know what... I think we should take a nice father/daughter walk. Maybe down by the river. That sound good? Last chance before the wedding. CLARE Right now? Don’t you have to work? DOC That’s the great thing about semiretirement. Get to relish these moments. Can’t take them for granted. CLARE Dad... CLARE That’s so sweet. Let’s do it. DOC So... tell me how’re things goin’ with the wedding... CLARE Oh good, I guess... I don’t know... MATTI I guess that’s good for today. I might need to read up on it... see why it’s not working. JAKE Yeah, or we could just take it apart again and try to put it back together. You know... have some fun. MATTI You just make work decisions, based on what’s “fun”? JAKE Pretty much. Seems to be working so far. We have more loyalty clients and more referrals than we’ve ever had. I think it’s because people can sense our passion. How about you? MATTI What about me? JAKE Do you enjoy your work? You haven’t said much about it. MATTI Well, it’s different. JAKE How so? MATTI I’m on a structured path that provides long-term stability. JAKE What do you mean? Like hate what you do now so you can enjoy the rewards later, type thing? MATTI No... like sacrifice some things to gain other, better, more important things. JAKE Ohh. I see. They start cleaning up the work area. JAKE I just think you should be working on cars. You obviously love it. MATTI I’m just not that interested in new cars. I love these old trucks, they have so much history and character. The newer ones... they just don’t challenge me. JAKE So why not work on changing that? Maybe there’s some way you could bring the old cars back... Matti turns away. She doesn’t want to discuss it. MATTI How ‘bout you? Are you doing what you love? JAKE Don’t change the subject. Since when has something not being easy stopped somebody like you? And if you love doing it, it’ll all be worth it. MATTI You have a little... DEVIN Matti? MATTI Devin! What are you doing here? DEVIN We’re putting together the materials for the prospectus so I could afford to take a few days. Plus I got your voicemail about overly enthusiastic best man. You sounded miserable so I had to come rescue you. MATTI I’m so glad to see you. DEVIN I love you and I want to hug you, but the suit. MATTI Oh, of course, yeah. JAKE Hi, Jake Henderson. MATTI Let’s go find my dad. He’ll be thrilled to finally meet you. Jake, a bit heartbroken (but hiding it, of course) watches DEVIN Nice to meet you, Jack. JAKE It’s Jake. DEVIN Right. MATTI -- You good to finish the clean up? I normally wouldn’t -- JAKE Yeah, it’s fine. MATTI Thanks. JAKE Bye Matti. DEVIN What were you doing back there? MATTI Just trying to repair my mom’s old truck. DEVIN I didn’t know you were... into that... MATTI I told you I used to work at my dad’s shop. DEVIN I just assumed you meant behind the register or something... MATTI No. This is where my interest in engineering started. DEVIN Humble beginnings. MATTI Yeah, I guess you could say that. A lot of the most influential people came from humble beginnings. DEVIN That’s true. I know I’m lucky to come from a privileged background. MATTI Well, there’s privileges to growing up here and leading this kind of life too... Anyway, how does a home cooked meal sound? DEVIN No good restaurants around here? MATTI Yeah, there are, but my family likes to cook dinner together. DEVIN That’s adorable. DEVIN ... I couldn’t decide, so I studied at Cambridge and Oxford and double majored at both schools, so I actually have two undergraduate degrees. DOC Impressive. JAKE Do you really need two? One was enough to get me in whatever door I was knocking on. DEVIN I believe that in order to really succeed in anything you do, you have to stand out. JAKE I don’t know... experience is good, but people don’t hire a piece of paper, you know? Being a good, reliable person... that’s a feat in itself, wouldn’t you say? DEVIN Of course, but don’t let my resume fool you Doc... I still know my way around a car. DOC Really? DEVIN Yeah, I took an introduction to mechanics class during my spring break while I was getting my Ph.D.. JAKE What do you mean? DEVIN On a road trip with Matti, my car broke down, and I fixed it all by myself... didn’t have to call aaa or anything. CLARE What? DOC My daughter let you fix a car? DEVIN Yeah it was cold out, so... What? Why does everyone look so surprised? I know I look lean... but I’m all muscle. CLARE No, it’s not that. Matti is a genius mechanic and prideful too. She never -- MATTI Well, I’ve changed. I’ve learned that sometimes it’s nice for people to help. DOC Yeah, help, but that’s like asking a nursing student to perform a surgery when the surgeon’s in the next room. DEVIN I hardly think we can compare fixing cars to brain surgery, though, now can we? The room falls silent. Well... he was charming for a little while. JAKE What was wrong with the car? DEVIN Flat tire. They all stifle their laughter, except Matti who is not amused. Jake takes a big bite of his food. Devin looks back. Game on. DEVIN I’d like to propose a toast... to the happy couple. DEVIN Your “love is something eternal; the aspect may change, but not the essence”. Cheers. CLARE That’s Vincent Van Gogh. DEVIN Yes, it is! I’d forgotten you were a painter. Matti has told me a lot about you and your work and your classes. Really noble profession. CLARE Thank you. JAKE I’d like to make a toast, too. To Clare and Tj, you’re like family to me. You are two of the kindest people I’ve ever met and your love... it just makes sense. I’m so honored to be part of your celebration... as the best man... Obviously because I’m the best... Here’s to a lifetime of happiness! CLARE Aww that’s sweet. TJ Come here, big guy. DEVIN Tough crowd tonight. MATTI No. They loved you. They’re just giving you a hard time, because they care about me. DEVIN Now I get why you wanted me to come so desperately. That Jake guy... MATTI No, he’s not so bad. DEVIN If you say so. What do you say you show me around this charming little town of yours tomorrow? MATTI Yes, definitely, but I have to help DEVIN I came all this way, I thought we could spend some time together. MATTI You’re right. I’ll try to get out of it, or at least slip out early. Where are you staying? DEVIN Right across the street from the shop. That bed and breakfast was the number one recommended place to stay in Caterton. MATTI ... It’s the only place to stay in Caterton. MATTI Can’t sleep? CLARE No. Thought I’d try to write my vows, but it’s impossible. MATTI Really? CLARE You know me. I didn’t even think I believed in marriage until I met Tj... so thinking about vows... it’s just... It’s a big commitment. MATTI It is. But you and Tj are meant for each other, right? CLARE I think so. I thought so. MATTI Past tense? CLARE I don’t know. Recently we haven’t seemed that compatible. Like we’re on different wave lengths. We’ve never been off like this... it’s throwing me for a loop. MATTI That’s perfectly normal newlywed tension. CLARE How would you know? MATTI ... I watch daytime television talk shows, just like anyone else. CLARE Matti! MATTI I’m serious! CLARE You think it’s normal? MATTI Completely. Why don’t we start with how you met... CLARE Okay... MATTI What do you think? Peaceful right? DEVIN Yeah, it’s lovely. Good place to come for a weekend and just get away from it all. Don’t think I could live here though. MATTI It’s been way too long since I’ve been here. DEVIN Just out of curiosity, why do they call it Gator Lake? MATTI This whole area used to be called Gatortown. They thought the name would scare newcomers from moving in and over-populating or just ruining the town. Eventually it changed to Caterton... I guess similarly to how people’s last names sort of evolve and change over time, but I guess the name stuck for the lake. DEVIN I knew it. For a second, I thought you were going to say there were alligators in here. MATTI There are. DEVIN What? Matti, I’m not equipped to handle gators. That’s one thing I haven’t studied. MATTI Don’t worry, there’s only one... maybe two if Roxy’s still alive. DEVIN If we were in a larger boat, I’d feel perfectly safe even happy that we might have a gator sighting... but this canoe is low and unstable. MATTI Like our relationship. DEVIN What? MATTI Nothing, just an analogy. DEVIN Your comparing us to this boat? I left work to be here because I thought it was important to you. MATTI You’re right. I’m sorry. I just feel like you’re not having a good time. No, she won’t. She stuffs her feelings down. DEVIN It’s fine. MATTI Okay. DEVIN Let’s hug when we aren’t in gator invested waters on a boat that could tip at any second. MATTI Oh Devin, we’re in Maine. There aren’t any alligators up here. They’re all down in Florida. DEVIN Oh. MATTI I was just kidding you. DEVIN Okay. JAKE You excited for the bachelor party tonight? TJ Let’s see how today goes first. Clare and I haven’t been doing so well. JAKE What’s wrong? TJ I think she’s the greatest and I love her. JAKE So... what’s the problem? TJ I just... I don’t know what she wants anymore. She’s been so unlike herself the past few weeks. We had one of our first fights ever. Now I just don’t have any idea what she’s thinking. JAKE Why not talk to her? TJ I don’t want to stress her out even more. I think I just have to take it in stride. Keep my fears to myself. Be strong. Masculine. You know? JAKE Up to you. But I think it’s bad to suppress your feelings. TJ But aren’t we guys supposed to keep all their feelings locked up inside? JAKE I know. That’s the best part of being a guy. TJ True. Very true. JAKE Give Clare the key. Let her unlock those feelings. TJ Never! Never ever! JAKE What’s with the pen and paper? TJ We’re writing our own vows. JAKE How are you going to write those if your feelings are all locked up? TJ I will write robot vows. MATTI What are you doing? DEVIN It just occurred to me: maybe I can get a signal out here. I might be able to see that prospectus and get a headstart-- MATTI Be careful, Devin! DEVIN Just give me one minute, I think I’m getting a signal... DEVIN You need to get me to a computer as quickly as humanly possible. MATTI Sure. CLARE Like Tiffany blue? Or Oxford blue? TJ Blue. Like blue... blue. CLARE Tj, there’s tons of different kinds of blues... when you say blue-blue, I think of periwinkle, but you could be picturing like a Persian blue. TJ I don’t know what I’m picturing. CLARE There’s a big difference and it could make or break the ceremony. TJ The shade of blue is not going to make or break our wedding. It’s just a color. Colors can’t ruin things. CLARE You are talking to a painter slash art teacher... of course colors can ruin things! TJ I just mean, you need to relax. I’m not used to seeing you so worked up. Normally we’d be laughing about this. Let’s have fun... this is for our wedding. CLARE Tj, you can’t tell a bride to relax when her wedding is less than a week away! TJ Okay... sorry. MATTI You can use my dad’s computer. DEVIN You sure he won’t mind? MATTI He barely uses it. He still has an appointment book... like an actual book. MATTI Looks like Jake is following in Doc’s footsteps in more ways than one. DEVIN This will only take a minute, and then we can get back to whatever else you had planned. MATTI Actually, I have to go meet up with Clare. DEVIN I thought you said you were going to try to get out of it. MATTI She wouldn’t budge. Anyway you have work to do so... DEVIN Yeah, it’s fine. Give me a kiss. A quick peck, per usual. DEVIN Bye, have fun. MATTI You too. CLARE Electric blue is similar to cyan, which is too much of a greenish blue for me. CLARE Matti! You made it! TJ Thank goodness. MATTI Hey guys. JAKE Hey. MATTI Hi. CLARE I thought you wanted to do stuff with Devin today, and try on your dress tomorrow? MATTI We went to gator lake, but he had to come back and do some research, so it worked out. CLARE Your outfits are in the dressing rooms. JAKE So how did you and Devin meet? MATTI We met in an elevator. At the time he worked on the 42nd floor of his office building, and I had to drop off a package on the 41st floor. The elevator kept stopping on the way down so we had a long time to talk, and once we reached the lobby he asked me out to dinner. JAKE No way! So that’s why you don’t want to break up with him. MATTI What are you talking about? JAKE Everyone wants a romantic story like that. MATTI Is that why you try to meet girls online? JAKE Very funny. Anyway, not all of us can just pick up women in elevators. There are barely any high rises in Caterton... One or two stories up isn’t nearly enough time. MATTI Well, Devin wasn’t picking me up. We had a connection. We have a lot in common. JAKE Like what? MATTI We have the same career aspirations and life goals. He’s literally everything I could want on paper. JAKE Does he make you happy? MATTI He inspires me. He’s so smart. I’m not from a family of readers... I think that’s what really drew me to him. All his academic achievements... JAKE Well, I just hope he appreciates all of your achievements the way you appreciate his. MATTI So... do I look okay? JAKE Beautiful. Just... beautiful. How about me? MATTI You clean up nice. Lets see what the bosses say. TJ What about this one? CLARE That’s the steel blue skinny tie. Isn’t that the one we originally chose? TJ Yeah. CLARE I like it. I do. TJ Right? Now that we’ve seen every single other tie in this place, I think I really love it. CLARE Yeah, it has a classic simplicity while still seeming hip. TJ And ‘steel blue.’ That just sounds cool. MATTI So? CLARE You guys look amazing. TJ It’s like you two are the ones who should be getting married. MATTI Good. We’ll change back then. MATTI Hey. How’s it going? DEVIN Good. How was the wedding stuff? MATTI Good. We’re going to the Billy Miner if you want to come with. DEVIN The what? MATTI It’s “the best” aka “the only” bar in town. DEVIN Yeah. Let’s do it. Get a little feel for the culture here. MATTI It’s always research with you. You’re so serious all the time... I just want us to have some fun. DEVIN Research can be very fun. MATTI I know it’s not 5 stars, but do you want to order something? DEVIN I’ll just stick with the bottled water. MATTI Want to dance? DEVIN What’s going on? MATTI Tj’s bachelor party. DEVIN Here? MATTI Not many options. DEVIN Can’t believe this is the only bar in town. No wonder you left. MATTI Everyone love this place. DEVIN Ignorance is bliss. They don’t know any better. JAKE Hey guys! JAKE Sorry, man. DEVIN Pretty sure that was on purpose. JAKE No it wasn’t. DEVIN My shirt’s drenched. JAKE I can see that. MATTI It’s only water. DEVIN That’s not the point. JAKE Want to take it outside? DEVIN Are you serious? How juvenile. I’m a Ceo of a company, I don’t have bar brawls. JAKE Not a fight. Cornhole. DEVIN What did you just call me? MATTI He’s not calling you anything. JAKE I’m challenging you to a game of Cornhole. DEVIN I don’t know what you’re saying, but it’s on. JAKE The rules of Cornhole are simple -- DEVIN Oh, I know how to play. Where I’m from-- We call it bags. TJ Nice! TJ I call winner! CLARE This is my future husband at his bachelor party. I love it. MATTI You having fun, Tj? TJ Yeah! DEVIN Pardon my saying so, but aren’t bachelor parties supposed to be wild? TJ I guess so. CLARE I don’t like where this is going... DEVIN Nothing terrible, just something a little crazier than Cornhole... No offense Jake. TJ Yeah! I’m only a bachelor once. Let’s get into some trouble. CLARE But not too much? TJ Not too much. Let’s go, boys! We’re rolling out! Devin you gotta come too. DEVIN I don’t know... I should really spend some more time with Matti. MATTI No! You have to go! It’ll be so fun. MATTI Oh... alright. MATTI See? He fits in just fine. She watches the boys go, smiling. DOC Mattilynn Jane Dupree. She looks up... sees her Dad. DOC What are you doing here so late? MATTI I could ask you the same question. DOC Sometimes I just hang around at the shop... this place has a lot of memories. MATTI It does. DOC How’s it going? MATTI Still won’t budge. She’s a moody gal and I’m running out of time. DOC Guess she just needs some more love, huh? MATTI Guess so. DOC What’s this I hear from Anna... something about favors? MATTI She told you? DOC You should know that there are no secrets in Caterton. Plus, Clare showed up at the garage with lunch. That’s always a sign something’s wrong. MATTI Ah that’s right. Well, Clare didn’t want me to tell you, but she was having trouble making payments for the vendors... so I just reminded people how much they loved you and how much you’ve helped them over the years... and they were eager to return the favor. Are you mad? DOC No. I mean I don’t do favors to get them back... but we all have to look out for each other. So that makes me feel pretty darn good that people are looking out for us and your sister. Speaking of which, where is she? MATTI Still out dancing with the girls. DOC Why not you? MATTI I don’t know. I’m still adjusting to being back here. I don’t feel like myself right now. DOC Or maybe you feel more like yourself than ever... and that’s confusing to you? MATTI Maybe. DOC Tj’s great huh? They’re a wonderful couple. What about Devin? We scared him off yet? MATTI Yeah. He invited Devin along to his bachelor party. DOC That was nice of him. I’m heading back home. Want a lift? MATTI I think I might stay here a little longer. I have a lot of great memories here too... DOC Alright, don’t stay too long. MATTI I won’t. JAKE Rise and shine. JAKE Sorry, you looked so peaceful, but... MATTI What are you doing here? JAKE I work here. MATTI Oh... I must have fallen asleep. JAKE You were here through the night? MATTI Yeah, I used to do it all the time when I was little. JAKE Why doesn’t that surprise me? MATTI How was the bachelor party? JAKE Ummm... MATTI What? JAKE Things got a little crazy. MATTI What happened? JAKE Why don’t I just show you? JAKE We went down by the water -- decided to light a fire and camp. Then, somehow, we decided to arm wrestle. MATTI Wait, is Devin crying? JAKE No, he just started to get really bad allergies. MATTI So, what happened exactly? JAKE I don’t know, something about carpal tunnel from research or something. MATTI He’s not used to rough and tumble country boy stuff. JAKE Clearly... This is when we went for a night swim. JAKE Devin didn’t go in. Somebody told him there were gators and he wouldn’t believe us when we told him that was ridiculous. JAKE And then while we were in the water, I guess Devin was looking for a phone signal and he wasn’t watching where he was going and it was dark so he... kinda... hit into a tree. MATTI Oh my gosh! Is he okay?? JAKE Don’t worry, he’s fine. He just has a mild concussion and a bump on his head. MATTI He needs to see a doctor. JAKE I took him to the hospital last night. MATTI You did? JAKE Yeah. I was there all night with him. Wanted to make sure he was okay. MATTI Why didn’t you call me? JAKE It wasn’t serious. I didn’t want to worry you. He’s fine now. Resting at your place. I just dropped him off. MATTI Thank you for looking after him. That means a lot. I should go -- JAKE No, let him sleep. Besides, he didn’t want me to tell you. I think he was really embarrassed. MATTI And I think you’re getting a lot of pleasure out of that. JAKE No... I’m not. MATTI You totally are. Let me see those pictures again. MATTI Hello. DONALD They fired him! MATTI What? DONALD Poor guy didn’t last a week. MATTI That’s unfortunate, but not surprising. DONALD Not unfortunate for you. I’m calling to let you know the job is yours! Jake watches her as she talks in the phone. MATTI That’s great. DONALD I’ll have legal e-mail the contract. Just sign it, send it back, and you can start as soon as you’re back in town. MATTI Thanks. DONALD I thought you’d be happier about this. MATTI No, I totally am. I just... I just sorta woke up. DONALD Okay. Talk soon! MATTI Bye. JAKE What is it? MATTI I got a promotion... head of the design team. JAKE That’s awesome! Congratulations! Can’t say I’m surprised though. MATTI You’re funny. JAKE I’m serious. MATTI Well thanks. I better go sign the papers. JAKE Okay. He watches her go. DOC Well if it isn’t sleeping beauty. MATTI Hi Dad. DOC What’s up? You fix the truck? MATTI Almost. I just came by to use the printer. DOC Sure. What for? MATTI Oh, nothing big. Just need to print and sign the contract for my new job. DOC No way! I’m so proud of you. MATTI Thanks, Dad. JAKE We’re gonna need all hands on deck for this. Big wreck. No injuries but we got three cars coming in. MATTI I guess it can wait. Let’s do this. TJ Hi sweetie. CLARE Hi. TJ You ready for this? CLARE I think so. TJ You have all the paperwork and everything? CLARE I have my proof of citizenship, my Id, and... TJ My heart. CLARE Awww. You’re so sweet. TJ I can’t believe we’re actually doing this. CLARE I know. I’m so lucky you decided to walk into my art class that day. TJ I still can’t paint a portrait to save my life. CLARE No... you were kind of hopeless there. TJ You can’t learn talent, I guess. CLARE But you’re good at so many other things, and you’re going to be the best husband and father. TJ Ready to go downstairs and get this license? CLARE Yeah... oh shoot... wait... I forgot my birth certificate... CLARE Is that it? TJ What’s this? CLARE That’s your portrait from the first day of class. TJ I thought I threw this away. CLARE I know. I fished it out. TJ You’ve kept it all these years? CLARE At first I just kept it because I didn’t want you to be discouraged... some of my first paintings were horrible... but then once I saw... TJ That I wasn’t improving. CLARE Well, that it wasn’t your thing... I just kept it because I thought you were cute. TJ Come here, you. They share an embrace. TJ I got you a little something too. CLARE You did? TJ Yeah. CLARE Cupcake molds... TJ It’s supposed to be funny... because we had that silly fight about the cake and the cupcakes... remember? CLARE Well I put a lot of thought into my gift, and you give me... this? TJ Oh sorry, I thought we were supposed to be having fun with our wedding, but you’ve turned into Miss Serious. CLARE If I left it up to you we wouldn’t even have a seating chart! TJ Exactly! CLARE Let’s just sign the licence. TJ Fine. CLARE Fine. MATTI Hey. Are you okay? DEVIN I told him not to tell you. MATTI You head butted a log, I think I should know. MATTI What are you doing? DEVIN Trying to see if this investment will pay off... just got to send a few more e-mails and check a couple more sources. MATTI I have some news. DEVIN What is it? MATTI I got the design promotion. He’s still looking at his phone. DEVIN That’s so exciting. That they’re willing to take that leap of faith. MATTI What? DEVIN Well, I just mean you haven’t been working there for very long, so it’s great that they think you’re ready for a leadership position. MATTI It sounds like you don’t think I’m ready for a leadership position. I feel like I don’t even know who you are anymore. DEVIN I’m the same man I was when we started dating. MATTI Well, I’m not the same. DEVIN I’m sorry. You’re upset. I was just trying to be the voice of reason, but that was wrong of me. I’m happy for you, okay? MATTI Okay. I’m going to go get ready for the rehearsal dinner. DEVIN Yeah. Wash up a bit? I’m not used to seeing you so rugged. MATTI And what do you think? DEVIN It’s a little weird, to be honest. MATTI You are just full of terrible answers today. DEVIN I have one more... MATTI What now? DEVIN Do you think it would be terribly rude if I skimped out on the rehearsal dinner? I just have a couple more things to do. That way I can be completely present during the wedding and enjoy it. MATTI Well the wedding isn’t designed for your enjoyment, but fine. Whatever. DOC Can I have everyone’s attention please? DOC I just want to thank everyone for coming out tonight. Friends, family, and soon-to-be family... DOC It’s going to be a beautiful wedding thanks to all of you. I’ve gotten a lot of credit for the auto shop... but there are only two things I’m truly proud of in my life, and they’re both standing right there. DOC Tj, I’m so thankful that I can always count on you to look out for my baby girl, Clare. And if you don’t, well, “somebody” might accidentally cut your brakes... DOC Kidding, kidding. You are a true gentleman, and I love you like a son. Come give your old man a hug. DOC Cheers! JAKE Hi. MATTI Hi. CLARE I’m gonna check on Tj’s parents. Gotta make sure Dad isn’t scaring them off with any more bad jokes. JAKE Where’s your other half? MATTI He’s not coming tonight. JAKE Why? He’s still in town isn’t he? MATTI Some stuff came up. Why are you on my case about this? JAKE Do you remember when we first met? JAKE My dad’s car was having problems again and this time he dragged me to the shop. I didn’t want to go, but when I get there, I see this girl. She was so confident... covered in grease, having the time of her life fixing our old clunker. When you came back to town, I wasn’t sure if you’s be the same girl. But I’ve gotten to know you, and I think you’re an incredible woman. This guy... he doesn’t deserve you. You change when you’re around him. And he doesn’t see what I see. So there’s a simple solution to all of this. Break up with him. MATTI Wow. You really think you know everything, don’t you? Well, you don’t know me. You don’t know anything about my life. You just think you do, and I know exactly what you’re trying to do. I don’t need you to fix me. JAKE Fix you? MATTI I don’t need your help. And I don’t want your help. I’m fine. JAKE I just care about you. I thought that we-- MATTI It’s my fault... I shouldn’t have spent so much time with you. It was a mistake. JAKE Okay. MATTI What are you doing here? DEVIN I came for the rehearsal dinner. MATTI That was three hours ago. You can’t just show up whenever it’s convenient for you. DEVIN Whoa, that’s no way to show your appreciation. MATTI Appreciation? Appreciation for what? You only came here because it was convenient. My feelings don’t matter to you, and frankly I’m sick of it. You should be lifting me up not putting me down. You make me feel worthless, and I’m better than that. I think you should leave, Devin. DEVIN I came all this way and I even went to some lame excuse for a bachelor party and talked to your dad about cars... My time is precious and I put a lot of it into this... MATTI Well that investment, isn’t going to pay off. Go home. DEVIN But-- DOC She said, go. Now. MATTI I’m really sorry I ducked out early. I didn’t mean to add any more stress to your wedding. CLARE Don’t be sorry. I understand. Besides, it was kind of nice to not be the only one with drama for once. MATTI Good... Glad my break up was a source of joy for someone. MATTI Are you okay? CLARE Oh yeah. Are you? MATTI I just don’t know what I’m doing with my life. Everything is a mess right now. Nothing’s going as planned. CLARE You should let life surprise you. It’s nice not to have a plan... Besides break-ups can be good for you. They create space in your life for something or someone better. MATTI Says the girl entering into a lifelong commitment tomorrow. MATTI At least we broke up before the wedding. I’d hate to see his face every time we look at your photos. Those will be permanent fixtures on Dad’s mantle. MATTI I’m glad we’re here. We both need to de-stress. MATTI I was working on some cars. JAKE If you don’t know what’s wrong with it, I’m not sure I can help, but let me give it a shot... JAKE That’s weird. You’re missing the distributor cap. It’s almost as if somebody’s been fiddling with it. Anyway, I think I have an old one over here that might fit. JAKE You know, these old cars are amazing, but I sure could do without these broken-down polluting engines. They’re horrible. JAKE Okay... give it a try. JAKE There you go. Huh. That’s strange. We must have turned that engine over a dozen times. MATTI Weird. JAKE Alright. Glad I could help. Have a good evening. MATTI You’re leaving? JAKE Well, yeah. You’re good to go. You don’t need me anymore. MATTI Sorry, I’ve been so difficult lately... Just everything with Clare and Devin and... JAKE This doesn’t have to do with them. It has to do with you. MATTI You’re right. I’ll own up to it. I should have listened to you. JAKE No problem. Message received. MATTI It’s just strange being back and you’ve been so nice to me and great to my family and I wanted you to know that-- JAKE Like I said, don’t bother. What’s done is done. MATTI So that’s it then? JAKE Well, I’ll see you at the wedding. We’ll walk down the aisle together. DOC Go wake our girl up. She can’t be late on her big day. MATTI She’s not down here? DOC ...Does it look like it? MATTI I passed her room and she wasn’t there. MATTI Clare was always the wild child. She was the artistic one. She would get carried away in her fantasies. She’s passionate, and sometimes passionate people overreact. TJ I love her passion. That’s probably what I love most about her. JAKE And that’s why you two are a perfect match. JAKE Door was open. MATTI Thanks for coming. I know you’re not my favorite person right now, but I need your help. We can’t find Clare. She’s totally disappeared. JAKE How long has she been gone? MATTI I saw her last night. JAKE Let’s retrace her steps. MATTI We went to the spa yesterday. Everything seemed fine. JAKE How’s Tj? MATTI He’s great. This is the happiest day of his life. MATTI I’m gonna go talk to her. JAKE I’ll wait here. MATTI Clare? MATTI What’s going on? CLARE I just needed to Zen out. This whole wedding has just... everything’s gotten out of control. I’ve been out of control. I’ve totally lost who I am. MATTI The bride is supposed to be crazy. CLARE But I’m not supposed to be. I’m the sane, casual, laid-back one. You’re the crazy one. MATTI I am? MATTI You’re fine. Everything’s going to be fine. It’s going to be great. CLARE How do you know? Things are gonna change. They already have changed and I’ve gotten swept up in it all. MATTI Things will definitely change, but they’re gonna get better. Tj is amazing. He loves you so much. You have so much ahead of you and you’re going to share it with someone great. CLARE ... He gave me a muffin pan... MATTI I just spent the whole morning with him and believe me... that gift is not some sort of bad omen... it doesn’t say anything about how he feels about you. It’s just something for baking... he thought you might learn how to bake some cupcakes one day and laugh about your silly fights. That’s all. CLARE You really think so? MATTI I know so. He’s back at the house, heartbroken. Let’s go. CLARE Okay. CLARE Baby! I’m so, so sorry! TJ No, I’m sorry. About the cupcakes. I was insensitive. CLARE No, please, it was cute. It was it was funny. I love it. TJ I didn’t know if I’d see you again... if it wasn’t for Matti and Jake... CLARE I know. I’m sorry. I love you. TJ I love you too. MATTI You look stunning. CLARE So do you. DOC A sight for sore eyes. I have something for you. CLARE Was this Mom’s? DOC Yeah. She’d be so happy for you. DOC Let’s get you married! CLARE I used to think a wedding was just an event. One day among the many that makes up a life with someone you love. Something that gets reduced to a mere moment. A night you look back on with great affection. But I was wrong. A wedding is work. Real hard work. CLARE But in going through this I realized something so, so important... ...it’s through adversity that I feel the strength of our love. I know that we can handle anything and I can be completely myself with you. You love and accept me for who I am... the good and the bad, my strengths and weaknesses. And for that I am eternally grateful. I love you, Tj. MINISTER By the powers invested in me, I now declare you man and wife. You may now kiss the bride. MINISTER Mr. And Mrs. Reynolds everyone! TJ You’re taking my last name? CLARE And now ladies and gentlemen, thanks to my sister, let’s get this reception started with one of our new favorite bands. Put your hands together for The Hearts and Strings! MATTI Before you go... We want to show you something. CLARE What? MATTI You probably thought I forgot: your something old... CLARE Our truck?! But I thought dad sold it... MATTI Nope. It’s all yours. Fully refurbished. Ready for the road. CLARE You did this all by yourself? MATTI Jake helped. A little. CLARE Thank you! PHOTOGRAPHER One last shot! MATTI Now go on, don’t keep your hubby waiting. JAKE What’d you think of the wedding? MATTI Everything worked out. Everyone from the town came together. It was perfect. JAKE Good. Well, it was really nice meeting you. I guess you’ll be heading back to the city soon. MATTI I didn’t take it. JAKE Excuse me? MATTI I didn’t take the promotion. JAKE Why not? MATTI I think there might be some promising opportunites here in Caterton... JAKE Oh really? MATTI Yeah, I was thinking... you know how my true passion has always been for these old cars? JAKE Yeah. MATTI The problem is they’re all gas guzzlers. So I was thinking... what if we change the old combustion engines in the classic cars into zero emission? It wouldn’t be easy, but I think there’d be a market for them. JAKE That’s an amazing idea! That’s exactly what I’d like to get the shop involved in. MATTI That makes sense because you’re the one who made me think of it. It seems like... well, we make a good partnership. JAKE So... are you and Devin going to do long distance? MATTI No. We actually broke up. JAKE Oh. Are you okay? MATTI Yeah. Yeah, I am. JAKE Good. You’ll find someone more deserving of you. Anyway, listen, I should go help clean up... JAKE What? MATTI There’s another reason I want to stay here. JAKE Oh yeah? MATTI No one has ever made me feel the way you do. Like I’m worth something... like I’m worth a lot. And you make me feel beautiful. I think I’ve always chosen the wrong guys... I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to start making the choice that’s right for me, not just the choice I’m supposed to make. JAKE Well in that case, maybe one night I could take you out? I know this great place called the Billy Miner... MATTI Isn’t that where you take all your dates? JAKE It’s where everyone in Caterton takes all of their dates... and, uh, I’m just going to kiss you now instead of talking more-- DOC What’s going on here now? JAKE Sorry, Doc. I uh... DOC Don’t apologize! JAKE Do you mind? I’ve been wanting to dance with her all night. DOC Be my guest... I’m gonna go ask Anna for a dance. JAKE The flower shop lady? DOC Yeah, she cuts a mean rug. JAKE You know, there’s only one problem with all this. MATTI What’s that? JAKE Just... you’ve given away the truck. What’s going to be your ‘something old’? MATTI I don’t know... I guess you’ll have to do. After all, you’ve been around practically my whole life. JAKE Matti? MATTI Sec! JAKE How long have you been down there? MATTI Almost finished. You won’t recognize this old geezer when we start her up. JAKE Are you planning on coming up for air anytime soon? MATTI It’s nicer down here. You should join me. MATTI You’re lucky. I just finished. MATTI Do I have dirt on my face? JAKE Just a little. Here let me get it. He leans in for a kiss. MATTI Thanks. JAKE So the retrofit’s running smoothly? MATTI Only one way to find out.
