ADRIAN_BROWN BRITTANY_ROWLAND CLARE_MORRISETTE_CALVERT ELOVIE_ROWLAND GILBERT_ROWLAND JOHNNY_ROLFE KALEB_ROWLAND MARIO_QUEZADA NATHAN_BROWN SAMANTHA_BROWN JOHNNY ROLFE Oh, nightmare, man I'm stuck in overflow right now There's about four inches [UNIT CONVERSION 10 centimeters] of water sitting on top of the ice and it's hidden underneath the snow You just can't see it JOHNNY ROLFE And, uh, I gotta act kind of quick because it's gonna freeze up underneath my machine All this snow mixed with that water just creates slush and it hardens, turns to ice really, really quick Now I'm in overflow, that fast See, it's sticking in my snowshoes The only good thing about it is it packs down really, really quick I want to get out there and find some new marten territory, break some trail, establish a new trap line, but I wasn't expecting overflow All right Man, oh man JOHNNY ROLFE Oh, man, what a disaster JOHNNY ROLFE It's always scary when you look back behind you and you see water kicking up and you're out on a lake in the middle of nowhere It's just overflow You know it's, it's water You see all this open water? It's on top of the ice What's dangerous is I'm wet JOHNNY ROLFE Also my machine is probably all frozen up right now, so I gotta go finagle that and make sure it's all loose I gotta clean it off before it freezes God, my feet are [bleep] cold All this is just wanting to freeze Now that it's out of the water, I can feel it getting firmer Warm weather's bringing a lot of snow that causes overflow It causes hard traveling, so it's kind of been a really up and down start to the trapping season All right, I got the bulk of all this out But it's not gonna stop me from going out there I'm not gonna quit now I want to keep going I'm a little bit wet, but I got a few miles in me left And I know what boundaries to push and how far I can get away with things, and I'm willing to roll the dice MARIO QUEZADA This land has put me in my place sometimes It's humbled me, it's made me cry MARIO QUEZADA It's made me bleed MARIO QUEZADA But I've lived a really symbiotic relationship with this land I need it And you know, I think that this land needs me to be a caretaker for it MARIO QUEZADA Okay All right All right, stop MARIO QUEZADA This should be a good area right here CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Okay MARIO QUEZADA The ice is pretty thick right there We'll just shovel out the snow and then dig some holes CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Okay MARIO QUEZADA And get to fishing CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Sounds good MARIO QUEZADA Clare and I are hoping to catch a few fish out here today We're gonna use the fish to supplement our dog food CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT We were hoping for some rainbow trout potentially Pike are in this area as well MARIO QUEZADA Just kind of want something for it to sit in, you know? CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Kind of to grab into? Yeah MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, to grab into CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yep MARIO QUEZADA It's really hard to get dogs to drink water in the winter, just like humans when it gets cold, they don't really want to drink that much water And so having fish in there will motivate them to drink it See that? Yeah CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Just pretty much there MARIO QUEZADA Yeah CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yeah You must be close MARIO QUEZADA Okay CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT All right MARIO QUEZADA All right, Clare CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Is she through? MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, it's through Let's see what we can catch CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yeah MARIO QUEZADA It's our first winter out here in the interior of Alaska Clare doesn't have a lot of experience ice fishing and neither do I, but, you know, we'll cycle through our baits and hopefully catch some fish for our dogs Wow That's such a deep ice hole CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yeah, it is MARIO QUEZADA It's like 20 inches [UNIT CONVERSION 50 centimeters] deep CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Gotta give a little bit of time MARIO QUEZADA Yep CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT That's what fishing's all about KALEB ROWLAND Part of what makes us humans work as a society KALEB ROWLAND Is we have the processing capability of taking things apart and remembering the reverse order of putting it back together KALEB ROWLAND Buried underneath this pile of snow I have an old Tundra owned by a McCarthy old timer who passed away recently, hasn't been used in the last three or four years, but I think I can make it into something reliable KALEB ROWLAND It's gonna take a little bit of work, uh, but that's okay This machine has an old single cylinder engine that will start no matter what temperature it's at Two-year-old gas in it, and it starts first pull To me, that's a sign that this is a good rig, it's got a really good motor It's just the mechanical details need a little bit of attention Crunchy, crunchy Poor thing That crunching noise is that drive line All right See if I can get this thing up the hill and into the tent I want to use the tent to thaw the snow machine out Come on It was probably destined for the landfill, but to me, I see opportunity I'm gonna get Gilbert and we're gonna fix it Ah, this will be a good shot Because of the lightness, the reliability, it's just the right machine to have out at the Nizina River Camp Hey, Gilbert, you gonna help me out today? GILBERT ROWLAND What are you doing? KALEB ROWLAND Uh, we need to change out the running gear on this machine KALEB ROWLAND So GILBERT ROWLAND What is the running gear? KALEB ROWLAND It is the drive line and it's underneath the tunnel, inside the track Do you wanna pull these bolts out? GILBERT ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND Okay Let me get you set up with a wrench Gilbert loves taking things apart He's taken fans apart He took a computer apart You like doing that? GILBERT ROWLAND Yeah First bolt out KALEB ROWLAND Perfect Get two more Good job But it's time for him to learn that once you take something apart, you have to remember how to put it back together So, this is the start of teaching him how to be a mechanic Here, can I see if I can get it with my hand? Oh, yeah GILBERT ROWLAND Oh, my This KALEB ROWLAND Cool Well, this is the part that's bad We just have to take these off We'll push 'em off, and then we'll push these ones back onto the same spot Then we'll be able to put it all back together and then we can go build a sled for it How's that sound? GILBERT ROWLAND Fun NATHAN BROWN The work never ends up here It's definitely a labor of love If you don't love it, you're not gonna succeed in it, and it'll beat you to death NATHAN BROWN Working on this hay barn that I began building in the fall This thing ain't framed out perfectly NATHAN BROWN But it's gonna do the job that we need it to do, which is just keep our hay outta elements NATHAN BROWN And just have good quality hay on hand for the animals Hay is hard to get up here It's a 340-mile [UNIT CONVERSION 547 kilometers] round trip every month, so it's a full day trip All right, we'll see how this goes You just store it in the cargo trailer that we pick it up in and unload it from there This building will allow us to store a lot more hay at a time and it'll be a huge benefit to our farm If we can have a stash of hay potentially through the majority of the winter You know, when there's several feet of snow, ice on the roads, it's gonna save us a world of headaches I'm not a big fan of heights Um, living up here has forced me to face that fear though Not my favorite thing, but today I gotta be a monkey So, it is what it is No way around it Should be about good It looks pretty level already That's about perfect I didn't expect that It's coming along slowly but surely It's about, oh, a good three feet [UNIT CONVERSION 91 centimeters] of snow or more right here So, it doesn't make it easy, carrying ladders or getting through here It's an awkward position to put this in Oh, [bleep] NATHAN BROWN Oh, [bleep] Yeah That was a bad place to put my hand I'm good though Didn't break anything A little bruised All right Dumb mistakes you make sometimes Funny thing is, I thought about it as I screwed it in Not a good start for today I'm gonna finish putting these roof tresses on Seems sturdy enough, but not as sturdy as I thought JOHNNY ROLFE Out here, I have nothing but time, but with that time I gotta manage it still What I do with it, it's still important JOHNNY ROLFE Just kind of massaging the machine back to life Let's give it one last little look JOHNNY ROLFE But everything's good now and, uh, I gotta get back out to the original plan, which is, uh, setting some traps Getting that trap line opened up I gotta mess with it a little bit more It's hard to get a good start to the trapping season when I'm just having little difficulties left and right My ignition coil here has been giving me some issues, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem So, this is something I need a new one of that I don't have Leave in the spring, I'll pick one up in town, but in order to have a proper trap line to go far out and hunt to be back in the same day for Java, this is kind of the price I have to pay Okay Let's see if this works Hopefully find some marten tracks and set some marten sets You know, it's important to get out and find new territory To me, that's a lot of what trapping is It's just finding new places Coming up this hill right here kind of slowed me down enough that I saw marten tracks Oh, I'll make a set on this tree, I think Good spot Marten are a smaller member of the weasel family They got a great fur that just allows me to stay out into the cold Arctic climates for longer periods than any sort of manmade fabric would allow me to do So, for bait, this is some tin fish I had with me when I built my cabins You know I never ended up eating 'cause I was catching a bunch of fish in the lake, so now I got this old expired herring and yeah, it's nice and stinky Marten love fish and instead of wrapping it in caribou hide, since I don't have much for caribou hide, I'm wrapping it up in the little game bag And, uh, yeah, that should do it I got a lot more to go Often years, you don't need much to lure a marten in Other years you gotta use big bait, really stinky, and it takes a little bit more effort Ooh, that's stinky foul meat right there But before I try to meticulously set all these traps, I'm just gonna set very basic standard Martin traps and see what's out there That trap is set There we go This is called a body trap The marten's gonna come up the tree They're great climbers It's gonna come along this branch, and they smell fish They go to take a bite and it's just immediate lights out So that'll just kind of hang right there Now, I came out here to explore, to find new places, new resources To me, this is a lifestyle of exercising that pioneer spirit within me And if trapping is an excuse to do that, then that's what it is So, this is set and um, I've got a pretty big circuit set right now I'm just gonna let these soak, I'm gonna get back home, hang out with Java for a little bit MARIO QUEZADA If you're not doing something every day that betters your life up here, then you know, what are you doing? Clare CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yeah MARIO QUEZADA I'm gonna switch out to the salmon row MARIO QUEZADA Some of these fish might like eggs CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Okay MARIO QUEZADA Clare and I are ice fishing in the Chatanika River Valley This is our first-time fishing in the winter, so we can't really be sure what to expect Man, everything just gets more complicated when there's water and ice, doesn't it? CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Uh, we chose to supplement the dog's food with some fish, so we're determined to be out here as long as it takes to catch some fish today MARIO QUEZADA You see anything yet? CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT I see nothing MARIO QUEZADA Nothing, man We're not catching anything on these jigging sticks that we have Maybe it's the lure I have on here CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Could be MARIO QUEZADA I'm gonna switch it up to the other pole that we brought and see if that doesn't work for a little bit Maybe I'll get something Get in there Yeah There we go All right Let's see what happens And I'm getting some bites CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT All right MARIO QUEZADA Yeah Oh Oh, nothing Oh MARIO QUEZADA Oh, Clare, I got one CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Ooh, beautiful MARIO QUEZADA Oh Yep CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Wow MARIO QUEZADA Check it out CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Nice little size MARIO QUEZADA Yeah Dogs will be happy when we get home CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yeah, totally MARIO QUEZADA Look at that CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Good job MARIO QUEZADA Yeah Wow Look at that thing That's beautiful It really shows us, you know that out here, if you do your part, then eventually you'll come up to success There we go That's interesting You know, this isn't an ice fishing rod, but the fish don't really care what you're using and CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT This is true MARIO QUEZADA If it just got us to fish, then we'll just keep using it You know? CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT They're in here Yeah MARIO QUEZADA The right way is the, the way that catches 'em Right? We got one, that's better than nothing CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yep MARIO QUEZADA And maybe we can catch some more fish, you know? CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yep MARIO QUEZADA Like I always say, we might not have a full freezer, but we got a full belly, so CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT This is true KALEB ROWLAND All of these small motors that we own require maintenance KALEB ROWLAND They work great when they're working, but when they decide to fail, it's up to us to figure out how to unfail them KALEB ROWLAND Okay KALEB ROWLAND I think we're in Now, do you remember what bolts we put on this? GILBERT ROWLAND Oh, right over here Right here KALEB ROWLAND Good job GILBERT ROWLAND Remember so well KALEB ROWLAND When I was Gilbert's age, I was instantly curious about how things work, and it's kind of neat to see the same ideas that come in Gilbert's head All right, you ready to put this on? GILBERT ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND Now what I want you to do is just hold this right here GILBERT ROWLAND Okay KALEB ROWLAND You're gonna take and put this on Do you enjoy wrenching, Gilbert? GILBERT ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND But today you got to learn how to put things back together, which is good If you're gonna take things apart, you gotta know how to put it back together I really enjoy getting to teach Gilbert on this restoration of an old piece of equipment She's all yours I hope that his love for wrenching on things continues Well, I think it's only fitting that since you helped fix it, you get to try it out You wanna pull the sled with it? GILBERT ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND You're gonna drive? GILBERT ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND Now all we gotta do is put the exhaust in, put the windshield on, and we're ready to go test this out GILBERT ROWLAND Yay I'll go get the windshield KALEB ROWLAND I have a feeling Gilbert is going to want to drive it a lot, and it makes me proud because I learned everything I know about riding on this exact model So, I think you'll go a long ways learning how to ride with this snow machine GILBERT ROWLAND That's so nice KALEB ROWLAND Now you'll be able to drive in comfort GILBERT ROWLAND Oh KALEB ROWLAND Snow machines are no fun without a windshield GILBERT ROWLAND Right KALEB ROWLAND Hold onto the windshield Don't let it fall off GILBERT ROWLAND Now this is so nice of a windshield KALEB ROWLAND Yeah, don't go breaking it on the first ride All right, Gilbert That's it That's all we we're doing on this today All right Moment of truth She purrs Oh, no clicking and clacking It works! Bye-bye JOHNNY ROLFE Nothing out here really goes as planned, and I think that's what I like the most I thrive in chaos I thrive in peace I thrive in it all I swear this has been, uh, kind of turned into like me being trapped versus me actually trapping Alright, let's see what we got going here What the [bleep] size is this? Before I can get out trapping, machines broke down again JOHNNY ROLFE So, this is the recoil Uh, it's how I start the snow machine I let the pull start it and it cracked here, and it cracked here and it cracked in another plastic part, then I couldn't start the machine Luckily, I got a new one Last winter, I noticed some hesitation on it JOHNNY ROLFE So, I made sure to bring a new one out this fall If this one breaks then I gotta wait until next year before I get the new one So, until next fall I just have to work with what I got I like the challenge of having to problem solve Can I fix it? And the answer is always yes I'll do whatever it takes to fix it And just kind of make do with uh, what you got So, fits right here and I need bolts Look how stripped these bolts are right here I can't use these bolts These are no good So, I'm gonna try to feed this bailing wire through the hole where the bolt was and have this act as the bolt, that's gonna secure this recoil to the engine Stick that through there like this, and then come up Have 'em come together, twist it, and it's, it's loose, you can see, but that's where you get the pliers in here If you go too tight, it'll snap it It's not too bad I got a couple more to do, but I think it's gonna work until, hell, I come back out here next fall and bring new ones So, I just gotta remember next time I come out 10 months from now, bring bolts for this Will it last a whole winter? Probably not I might have to redo this a few times, but I'm not worried about that I can't dwell on the little uncertainties of life out here And if I did, I'd worry myself to death So, it's important to just focus on one thing at a time And right now it's time to go check the traps Now that the trail's broken in, I can easily pull a sled I got some extra gear back there, be a little bit more prepared I think really that's the way to live out Go check some traps There's no fresh tracks around it What a bummer God, this time of year I normally have two dozen marten, I don't even have one this year It's like the trapping year of hell Empty trap, although something, uh, maybe a bird or something because this was just kind of laying right there and it was tied around it So that's kind of interesting Yeah, nothing's fresh here at all But it's not like a loss of hope because you don't have something to trap You know? It, uh, it's pretty normal I'm gonna keep, uh, moving on You think all your traps are gonna be full, you think every time you go out, you're gonna get something when you hunt and it's not a realistic way to live This one snapped The bait's kind of just hanging down here, it could be a bird picking at it 'cause I'm just not seeing any fresh tracks around here You know, out here I try to let all expectations out the window and just live in the moment and stay present Ptarmigan This is why I brought my, uh, sled with my shotgun since we've been seeing ptarmigan tracks everywhere There they go JOHNNY ROLFE How the hell did I miss? I'm gonna see if I can still find them Ptarmigan tracks right here Maybe I'll try cutting back Right there Right there Got one The other one was flying too fast, but I got the other one Cool, ptarmigan Nice Some [bleep] shooting, man I haven't shot the shotgun in a while Uh, that's what I love about this place You know, I'm, I'm going out trapping and now I'm hunting and trapping, and, uh, I never know what's gonna happen And, uh, that's what I love the most It's a good day so far I'm happy I better get moving NATHAN BROWN Maintaining livestock in general is difficult, but up here in Alaska it's 10 times as difficult SAMANTHA BROWN Ah, use your manners I said manners, Jimbo Come on you two NATHAN BROWN They're goats, they don't have manners SAMANTHA BROWN Geez, Louise NATHAN BROWN Here on the farm, the hay barn that we're working on NATHAN BROWN We're gonna add the roof studs across and, uh, see how long it stays standing NATHAN BROWN Next is a nail gun SAMANTHA BROWN Have you actually got to use this yet? NATHAN BROWN No SAMANTHA BROWN If we can sort out somewhere where we can keep hay out of the weather and not have it confined in a little trailer, it's gonna be really beneficial Is it even attached? NATHAN BROWN These nails are a little short I might have to go screws All right SAMANTHA BROWN So, it's basically gonna be the same thing Just you're gonna screw it instead? NATHAN BROWN Yeah SAMANTHA BROWN Screw it NATHAN BROWN Nope These aren't to eat We adopted a philosophy from a longtime farmer that good enough is perfect That one's in, onto the next If you're constantly just so hyper focused, getting everything to perfection, you're never gonna get a project completed in the time that you have allotted to you My thoughts are that not all the sheet metal's gonna line up perfectly Some of these boards aren't perfectly straight either, so we might have to scab it Either that or add some purlins SAMANTHA BROWN You may as well be speaking a foreign language to me I don't know what you're talking about It's kind a goofy building, but I think it's gonna look really good when it's done NATHAN BROWN So, I'll have you on that end and I'll be on this end We're gonna need a piece of sheet metal SAMANTHA BROWN This is kind of an awkward thing to have to, like, carry up Up here We have the ability to just build things Is it way it's supposed to? NATHAN BROWN Yeah SAMANTHA BROWN We don't have to go get licensing, we don't have to notify the city NATHAN BROWN Catch that SAMANTHA BROWN Whatever we've put together, it's up to code because it's not somebody else's code, it's our own code NATHAN BROWN Okay I'm gonna get this first one in SAMANTHA BROWN Okay NATHAN BROWN And then I'll have you pull a corner as I do the others SAMANTHA BROWN Okay We get to build what we want, when we want, and that is part of the joy of living up here, is that freedom to be able to do that whenever you feel like it NATHAN BROWN I'd call that a day Fit better than I thought it would Probably fit 150 bales, at least in here So that's gonna be SAMANTHA BROWN That's gonna be so nice NATHAN BROWN Good job MARIO QUEZADA You know, they say that pain is inevitable and suffering is optional Up here, you can either choose to embrace it or you can choose to succumb to it For us, there's only one option MARIO QUEZADA Well, this hole's not really working out for me MARIO QUEZADA There's other holes that exist here You just gotta be safe I'm gonna go over and try to see if I can't catch anything CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Great MARIO QUEZADA At this point the fishing hole that I caught the fish in seems to be drying up I noticed some overflow earlier and that means there's open holes I don't want to walk through a hole and go under the ice That could be deadly, but if there's an opportunity to go fish an open hole, I'm gonna try to go put a line in there Well, I found this open hole over here It's got a lot of overflow, so it's a little bit dangerous It looks like it's, you know, just kind of worn down and saves me a little bit of trouble and see if I can't catch some more rainbow trout for the dogs tonight Come on, baby Why is this so hard? Any luck, Clare? CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Nothing NATHAN BROWN I thought ice fishing was gonna be more active This is our first real winter in the interior, and so I'm learning that, you know, fish are a little more dormant and you might have to put a few more holes in the ice You know, you just have to kind of be more intentional You know, ice fishing's been a really new experience for us, and we're learning that maybe we have to go fish a little bit more in the summer so we don't have to do it in the winter CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Hi MARIO QUEZADA How's it going? CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Skunked MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, I got skunked over there too CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT It may have just all frozen, that overflow MARIO QUEZADA [bleep] I just cut myself MARIO QUEZADA Well, we're lucky you don't bleed out too fast when it's subzero CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Oh MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, it's all right It's just a piece of metal You see where it cut it? CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yeah, I do MARIO QUEZADA Yeah CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT It's a little puncture MARIO QUEZADA Looks good Yeah I'll just keep an eye on it throughout the day You can't really afford to get too hurt out here It's all right CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Well, we just got the one fish MARIO QUEZADA Yeah, and throw 'em in the dog pot tonight You know these dogs rely on us They need to eat and so getting better at getting food just makes sense You know, up here you can live hand to mouth, or you can go to the store, you know, it's pretty easy to go to the store or you can get good at that the first time CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Felt any bites? MARIO QUEZADA No, no, just a few nibbles, you know, and although we only caught one fish, it most certainly adds enough flavor to the pot of food We've got plenty of moose meat that we've saved up for them during times like this, and that's all right CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT You wanna start packing up? MARIO QUEZADA Yeah Let's get our stuff together and let's get them fed Let's cook that food up for 'em You learn a lot from going out and doing things like this for the first time, especially up here in Alaska because the vitality of survival is real KALEB ROWLAND As a father, I think it's important for my kids to learn how to do the things that we're doing It's my job every day to give them some new piece of knowledge that they can carry with them into adulthood KALEB ROWLAND The idea for the sled here is, we've got the bottom here and these are the sides and we're just gonna force this bottom to bend with the side as we pull it back KALEB ROWLAND What I was thinking to do is grab a ratchet strap and try and pull the bend into that side from this side BRITTANY ROWLAND Oh, that's clever KALEB ROWLAND Yeah We can also torch it if we need to BRITTANY ROWLAND Torch it to make it bend or torch it to light it on fire? KALEB ROWLAND Uh, it depends on how mad I am Now that I have this snow machine for this camp out here, I need to build a sled for it Something that's a little bit smaller than the one I already have, because it's huge Okay Let's start with trying that BRITTANY ROWLAND Okay KALEB ROWLAND It's just too much for a small machine like this Okay Come on in Keep coming Don't move Starting to look like a sled BRITTANY ROWLAND This'll be an awesome sled Not as big and bulky as the other one, but just as helpful KALEB ROWLAND Oh, this'll be, this'll be great for bombing through the woods This one will just pull right behind ELOVIE ROWLAND Dad, what are you doing? KALEB ROWLAND Trying to make it bend ELOVIE ROWLAND How does that make it bend? KALEB ROWLAND Makes it warm and soft I appreciate that my kids are very curious because someday they're gonna need a sled to pull behind a snow machine and they hopefully will be able to remember the process of doing this I learned this way of making sleds from my dad, and if my kids carry on the traditions, we'll be three generations deep of sled builders Cool We have a sled BRITTANY ROWLAND Check that out Ready to top it? Piper didn't like that KALEB ROWLAND Well, should we make the tongue? BRITTANY ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND This looks good Little bit smaller sled BRITTANY ROWLAND Yup KALEB ROWLAND Here we go What did I do with the drill? ELOVIE ROWLAND That is so nice GILBERT ROWLAND Hey, watch out KALEB ROWLAND You guys excited for this to work? ELOVIE ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND Excited for the snow machine we gotta pull it with? ELOVIE ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND Very nice little sled NATHAN BROWN You know, we're just constantly working together to make this farm work and to make this lifestyle work NATHAN BROWN See all this snow right here? See, there's a board there We've gotta uncover that board all the way along here NATHAN BROWN All right, soldiers We got the kids involved to shovel the outside of the hay barn That way we can reach the bottom of the frame and move on to the paneling Just do your best We just need like the upper half at least SAMANTHA BROWN Okay Having the kids involved wherever we can get them involved is great It's experience that you don't get many other places in life And I wanna share that with my kids NATHAN BROWN Adrian, I need for you to hold the tape measure about 11 feet [UNIT CONVERSION 3 meters] All right Paneling begins It's a long way the hardware store to get materials So, at this paneling we utilized on our greenhouse, and now we're utilizing it for the hay barn I'm gonna have you lift here and you're gonna lift there And I'm gonna get a nail up in here Working as a family, it's something that we haven't been able to do a lot until we moved up here A better way to do that, push against it with your hand while holding it You get at least tucked into the plastic and then it stays there SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah NATHAN BROWN Now we're in such close quarters, and this makes you a tight knit, well-connected family SAMANTHA BROWN All right Adrian can try to squeeze through and get to that one? NATHAN BROWN Just need one or two screws there ADRIAN BROWN All right SAMANTHA BROWN Oh, you got this, son ADRIAN BROWN Be careful I don't wanna be covered in snow NATHAN BROWN All right I'll try not to cause an avalanche BRITTANY ROWLAND No avalanche You fit ADRIAN BROWN Oh, my gosh I don't believe it BRITTANY ROWLAND Don't get stuck NATHAN BROWN You're almost there ADRIAN BROWN Oh, dang it NATHAN BROWN Just go straight on Straight on Yup We, uh, you can weasel your way up now SAMANTHA BROWN When we talked about putting up the greenhouse plastic, I was thinking oh this thing's gonna be ugly, but I kind of love it Hello NATHAN BROWN Okay I'm have actually hold the bottom I'm gonna have to get the top first SAMANTHA BROWN Oh, hold onto it It's not gonna go anywhere NATHAN BROWN Nope What are we looking at on that edge? Is it lined up pretty good? SAMANTHA BROWN If you're holding it on that side, I can come down NATHAN BROWN This barn is gonna change the farm in many ways SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah I think it's done NATHAN BROWN Yeah Seems like a hay barn SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah, it does It's an awesome hay barn too We might actually be able to get through an entire winter without having to get hay more than once I couldn't be more pleased with how this all turned out NATHAN BROWN I think we need to get what, close to hundred fifty, a hundred seventy-five bales probably if we want it SAMANTHA BROWN That's pretty neat NATHAN BROWN Hundred fifty I'd say SAMANTHA BROWN Okay Let's go get the bales Yeah? NATHAN BROWN Let's get the bales and load it up with what we got On this farm, with every project we complete, it becomes more and more ours We're crafting it to the way that we need it to work KALEB ROWLAND What do you think, Gilbert? Is it your turn to drive? GILBERT ROWLAND Yeah KALEB ROWLAND Let's go This was a great help with the Nizina River Camp for the late fall bear hunts or a wintertime moose hunt I'm really proud of my family for helping me get this done You like the new snow machine? GILBERT ROWLAND Oh, yeah I would say this thing is really cool KALEB ROWLAND It's just your speed, isn't it? GILBERT ROWLAND Yeah, it's a bit small KALEB ROWLAND Now you gotta learn how to start it I enjoy teaching them new things that they're not gonna learn if they're in the city Sitting in the back seat of a car, in a car seat, buckled up and scared to look out the window for fear of what they might see This is our home, and this is what we enjoy MARIO QUEZADA [inaudible] CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT We got the one MARIO QUEZADA Yeah Now they have a good broth to drink It's a win [dogs howl] You know Let's go cook it up in a little CLARE MORRISETTE CALVERT Yeah They're hungry MARIO QUEZADA To have an opportunity to live like this in a modern world, it just seems like dreams, and once it's cooked we can just cut it, you know? Get back I feel really conscious of things that they're consuming, and it just feels really full circle up here, you know, to be able to provide for these dogs from the land To actually be out here living this dream and see it in every scoop that I lay down for the dogs, every time they eat their food It's just the visual representation of your hard work and your success, and I just feel really lucky to continue to live this way and to provide for all those that I love Eat up, squad JOHNNY ROLFE This time Im really starting to freeze How they stay so warm It's just the tiniest little patch Ive already pulled off and there's, you know, that much feathers already [inaudible] Jave, what do you think about this ptarmigan, huh? Same thing I think, delicious Come on, let's go outside Come on Come on, Java Get you outside Get a little fresh air Fresh 40 below air Huh? You know, I, I don't always get what I want on the trap line, and I never have And frankly, I, I hope I never will That's what keeps it interesting Ooh, that is good All right Here Good girl You know, it's not about getting what you want, when you want it It's like how you react to the circumstances when you don't get what you want Now I feel alive, and this is to me what freedom is It's being out in the middle of nowhere, my own devices, my own thought, my own brain It's just figure it out and get it done And honestly don't think there's another lifestyle out there for me like that You know, I used to look at it like, I'm in the middle of nowhere, but this is my home, so it's like, am I in the middle of nowhere or am I home? Come on, let's go inside It's cold Come on Oh, man Woo That's chilly NATHAN BROWN It's hard to get these screws started without any leverage to lean on SAMANTHA BROWN Yeah It's gonna be a neat little building NATHAN BROWN I'm hoping so SAMANTHA BROWN This is kind of an odd shape, isn't it? NATHAN BROWN It's not a perfect rectangle, but I mean, we put these posts in by hand Can't expect perfection I haven't worked any previous construction jobs My experience really is just trial by fire The trick will be how do I do this without falling off? I guess the good news is if I fall, I fall in the snow Mostly SAMANTHA BROWN You'll be all right NATHAN BROWN I have a basic understanding of weight distribution and if I can get it to last, you know, 10 years or so, then I'll be happy Pretty solid SAMANTHA BROWN It's, it's, it's solid Yeah What do you need me to do, honey? NATHAN BROWN Just hand me the stapler in just a second SAMANTHA BROWN We've fixed some things up around here, but I have almost no construction experience NATHAN BROWN Or, yeah, if you could go on the other side One way or another, we just need to get this tacked into this board SAMANTHA BROWN I used to climb trees a lot when I was young I don't have the muscles I used to NATHAN BROWN Because you stopped bench pressing sheep Yup SAMANTHA BROWN [Laughs} Yeah Okay NATHAN BROWN Now we just run it to the other side, staple it up over there SAMANTHA BROWN Come with me, ha ha! To be able to climb and, and put something together is actually really fun for me Danger, danger, danger And it's really exciting just to do another thing that I never imagined myself doing That hurt my feet NATHAN BROWN Take that SAMANTHA BROWN Okay There you go NATHAN BROWN Next is the nail gun SAMANTHA BROWN Have you actually got to use this yet?
