ABIGAIL BEN BRIAN CARL CASSI CASSIE COURTNEY DENNIS DR_BACKER ER_NURSE FLOOR_NURSE GEORGE GRACE GREG JESSICA KRISTIN MARTHA MEREDITH NARRATOR NICK NURSE SAM SEAN STEPHANIE NARRATOR Previously on "Good Witch". GRACE I saw you and Sam. CASSIE Oh. SAM I'll meet you at the festival. CASSIE Eight o'clock? SAM Count on it. CASSIE Sam, be careful tonight. GRACE It was the day before All Hallow's Eve, as it was perpetually in the town of Tarynsville because of the curse that had been cast so many years ago. The people of Tarynsville had grown accustomed to this anticipation, in the same way that the young woman had been waiting for a love that she felt would never fill her heart. But on that day, the magic in the air was of a different spirit. Tarynsville breathed as if it were alive, and a deep and lasting passion felt ready to ignite. And no one who lived in that magical place could imagine the change that was about to come, all of it set in motion by the efforts of the Enchantress. GEORGE Cassie... Cassie. It's awfully late at night to light a fire. CASSIE I needed something to do while I was waiting to hear from Sam. GEORGE No word, huh? CASSIE He was supposed to meet me at the Festival, but he never showed up. GEORGE You want me to wait up with you? CASSIE No, that's okay. At least now I have something to stare into while waiting to hear his car. GEORGE All right. Good-night. CASSIE Good-night. CASSIE Sam? SAM Oh. Cassie. CASSIE Sam, where have you been? SAM Mostly driving around. Until I found a place to kind of sit. CASSIE All night? SAM Yeah, all night. CASSIE Why? SAM I had to do an emergency surgery and I had planned to meet you, like I said I would, but there were complications with the patient. I had him open on the table and I thought he was going to make it but. CASSIE Oh, Sam. SAM I couldn't save him. CASSIE I'm sure you did everything you could. SAM It's the first time that's happened since New York. And I just forgot how it rips you up from the inside out. So I just left the hospital, turned off my phone. CASSIE I'm so sorry. SAM Thanks. Me, too. CASSIE Do you want to come inside? No one else is up. I could make some tea. SAM You know, I don't really want to talk about it. CASSIE We don't have to talk. SAM I've got to sleep. CASSIE Welcome to Grey House. JESSICA Oh. We're so lucky to have found it. Sean had another B & B picked out but when our phones stopped working we couldn't figure out where it was. CASSIE Well, I'm glad you ended up here. SEAN Hey, my phone's working again. JESSICA You must have really good reception. CASSIE George, we've got some unexpected guests. GEORGE And we have a room waiting for them. JESSICA Oh, no, we're not together. I mean, we're here together, but we're not SEAN We're she and I, not us. JESSICA Right. CASSIE I see... Well, what names should I put your rooms under? SEAN Sean Coyle and Jessica Carrington. CASSIE Jessica Carrington, the author? My daughter and I love your books. JESSICA Thank you. I love writing them. GEORGE What kind of books do you write? SEAN Have you ever heard of the Tarynsville Trilogy? GEORGE I mostly read biographies or fix- it manuals. CASSIE Tarynsville is the magical town where Jessica's books take place. SEAN And the final book in the trilogy is coming out next week. CASSIE The Enchantress Unites. Grace and I are debating what it means and how it all ends... Could you give me a little hint? No, no, never mind, I don't want to know! JESSICA Nobody can know, not until the book comes out. Which is why my editor thought it'd be a good idea to get away before the onslaught of attention happens when it does. SEAN She calls me "my editor" even though I'm standing right here. JESSICA My editor likes to correct things if I'm a little unclear. CASSIE Well, why don't I show you to your rooms. JESSICA Oh. SEAN Thank you. CASSIE Have you started working on your next book yet? JESSICA I've been thinking about some things, but I haven't figured out the right idea. CASSIE Maybe Grey House will inspire you to come up with a story that inspires us all. ABIGAIL I don't think I've seen that one. BRIAN It's really good. He made it right between the two Godfather films. ABIGAIL Oh, Cassie. This is Brian. Brian, this is my cousin, Cassie. BRIAN It's really nice to meet you. CASSIE Ah, you too. ABIGAIL We met at the Lights Festival and bonded over our mutual obsession with movies. CASSIE I didn't know you were a movie lover. ABIGAIL I have always loved movies. So when do you think you'll be back in Middleton? BRIAN As soon as anyone orders a pallet of flour and eight hundred pounds of sugar. ABIGAIL Because Brian owns a bakery supply company. But the next time he's in Middleton BRIAN I'll see you at the multiplex. ABIGAIL Isn't he fantastic? It's like he Purple Rose of Cairo'ed right off the screen and into my life. That's one of the many movies I've seen, by the way. Hey, guys. GRACE Hey, was that Jessica Carrington I saw going upstairs? CASSIE Yes. She's staying here. GRACE See, I told you that was her! NICK Grace got mad at me for not knowing who she was, then she got even madder when I told her I hadn't read any of the books. GRACE Crazy. ABIGAIL Me, neither. Waiting for the movie. GRACE You know, I sometimes wish I could be as strong and brave as the characters in Jessica's books. They don't seem to be afraid of anything. CASSIE Being brave doesn't mean not being afraid. It means being afraid and doing it anyway. Why don't you grab an extra plate for Nick at the table? It's almost dinner time. NICK Yeah, dad's been eating most of his meals in the hospital. SAM Just prep the patient. I'll be there in twenty minutes and scrub up as soon as I get there. What? No, I thought she was released last night. Well, okay fine, but make sure there's somebody at the house when she gets there. I'll take another look when I get in. I'm on my way. SAM Give me a call if you have any post op pain, or if you just want me to explain again how you didn't need your appendix to begin with. Could you book an O.R. for tomorrow afternoon. I've got two procedures to get done before my consult at six. DR BACKER Doctor Radford. I didn't think you were on the schedule today. SAM I thought I should be on it. DR BACKER You've been here an awful lot lately. You're entitled to some time away from this place. SAM Well as soon as people stop needing a doctor, maybe I will. NURSE Here's Mrs. Jones' file. SAM know you guys are pretty backed up in the E.R. Let me help you thin the lines out a little bit. ABIGAIL Oh, sorry I can't stay for breakfast, but I've got a date. CASSIE With your movie man? ABIGAIL No, that was Brian. Today is Carl. He's on his way to play in a tennis tournament and is taking a one hundred mile detour just to see me. CASSIE Then he must really like you. Good morning. SEAN Morning. JESSICA I didn't realize this house had such a beautiful courtyard. CASSIE eah. I love being able to "...stand in the shadow of the house beneath the trees that stretched their boughs overhead." JESSICA "The trees that protected her heart." CASSIE I thought you might recognize your writing. JESSICA Because that's how I described things in my book. It was a courtyard just like this, with the same kinds of trees, where the young woman learns about her heritage. It's the place where she finally kisses the man who SEAN Jessica! JESSICA Spoiler alert. That's something that -- maybe -- happens in The Enchantress Unites. CASSIE I can't wait to find out what happens with the relationship. I'll probably curl up right here with a copy of your book, eager to read every word. JESSICA Actually, this would be the perfect place to read it. The first reading, at midnight, on the night the book is released. SEAN That's already happening in New York, Jess. The publisher is throwing a big party. JESSICA So why can't we throw it in Middleton, instead? I could read the first chapter right here in -- I didn't even ask you. Could we use your backyard? CASSIE Of course. JESSICA And then we'll have a big party after that -- which is when it'll be Halloween, which means, oh my gosh, that'd be perfect! SEAN I guess, maybe, I might be able to convince the publisher to let us do it here. JESSICA Sean, you can convince anybody to do anything which is why they'll let us do it. SEAN A book release like this -- it has to be done right. So is there anyone in Middleton who might be able to make a special event like this happen? CASSIE I can think of only one person. MARTHA I'll do it! CASSIE You understand that this is going to take a lot of work, and Halloween is in seven days. MARTHA Cassie, I just completed an enormously successful fund-raiser for Ford Warriors in Pink. CASSIE I was meaning to compliment you on your scarf. MARTHA Yes, we sold them all over town and one-hundred percent of the net proceeds are being donated to breast cancer charities. CASSIE A worthy cause. MARTHA And a visual testament to the fact that I am a woman who knows how to get things done. CASSIE Then you should have no trouble organizing a book reading and a big celebration in the town square right after that. MARTHA None whatsoever. I fact, I already know everything about Jessica Carrington's Tarynsville books because I've read them all cover to cover. In fact, you gave me the first one as a birthday gift, so maybe you were thinking ahead, all along. Well, lots to do. Ta-ta. GEORGE Caution -- painter at work. GRACE Should I go? GEORGE You're okay. Just don't walk on the ceiling, because that's what's getting a fresh coat. GRACE I'll watch where I step. Miss Carrington? JESSICA Please, call me Jessica. GRACE I love your books. JESSICA Oh. You must be Grace. GRACE You know who I am? JESSICA Your mother was telling me about how the two of you used to read my books together. GRACE Yes! We did! And then we'd spend hours talking about who we thought was going to find the Tarynsville Amulet. GEORGE What's the Tarynsville Amulet? GRACE It's this magical necklace that everyone in Jessica's books is looking for because whoever finds it is guaranteed happiness for the rest of their lives. How did you even come up with an idea like that, anyway? JESSICA Can I tell you a secret? I stole pretty much everything about Tarynsville from the stories my grandmother used to tell me. GRACE Really? JESSICA Yeah. Nana used to work in this great, old house and she got married to a man whose family didn't approve, so they had to keep it a secret. She couldn't wear her wedding ring or the ruby necklace that he gave her. She had to keep the ruby necklace hidden in a box, and I started wondering what would happen if somebody found it. GRACE The way everyone's looking for the Tarynsville Amulet. JESSICA It all came from Nana. GRACE Wow. SEAN Jessica, we're supposed to meet the mayor for a tour of the town. JESSICA We can be a minute late. SEAN No, we really should go now. JESSICA Here's another secret: I based the grumpy goblin character on him. GRACE Oh my gosh. MARTHA I just love this time of year. It's as if Middleton comes alive with the spirit of Halloween. So keep your eyes out for ghosts and witches and -- Cassie! CASSIE Martha. I see you're already at work showing the couple-of-honor around town. MARTHA Yes, we were just starting a tour. CASSIE Would you like me to take over as their guide? MARTHA Oh, Cassie, it's as if you read my mind. I've got so much work to do and less than a week to do it. CASSIE I'll make sure to show them everything Middleton has to offer. MARTHA You're in good hands with this one. She can tell you stories as if she's lived here forever! JESSICA Wow. What a beautiful old building. CASSIE Middleton has a rich history. JESSICA I like to think about the people who've stood here before. The artists who worked with that stone. CASSIE Does that give you ideas for your next book? JESSICA I'm still waiting for inspiration. Sometimes I wish I was like the fireplace builder in Tarynsville -- always finishing one project and moving on to the next. CASSIE And leaving his mark when he was done. JESSICA The heart and infinity sign, yeah. I was telling your daughter how I got ideas for my books. I didn't mention that was from real life, too. The man my grandmother married carved that symbol somewhere on every fireplace he built. SEAN We're using that image on the cover of The Enchantress Unites. CASSIE It's a wonderful symbol of perpetual love. JESSICA Yeah. Hey, I put a fountain like this in Tarynsville. It sprung from the ground near where the first fire started itself. CASSIE That was one of the first signs of magic. JESSICA You know, my Nana actually used to believe in that stuff. CASSIE Oh? JESSICA When I was little she used to tell me stories about the town where she used to live and all of the magic and romance that happened there, and I thought it was true. CASSIE But you don't anymore. JESSICA I guess maybe I believe in romance, but it's a lot more common in my books than it's ever been in my real life. SEAN Well, maybe life can imitate art some day. JESSICA Yeah. Maybe. My editor never lets me stop believing in happy endings. CASSIE I think we all could use an editor like that. JESSICA Yeah. ABIGAIL So Cassie said you wanted to pick out some flower arrangements together? SEAN Oh. Jessica's doing the picking. I'm just here to stay out of the way. JESSICA Sean gets some say in how things are going to go. SEAN But it's Jessica's big day. JESSICA How did you know? ABIGAIL Know what? SEAN Chrysanthemums are her favorite flower. JESSICA You knew that? SEAN I heard you mention it once. I guess I must have just remembered. ABIGAIL I didn't set these up for you. Cassie ordered them to put in the guest rooms at Grey House. But if you want I could order some more - JESSICA That'd be kind of perfect, actually. We could mix them with - ABIGAIL Sorry, you were saying we could mix them with -- Would you excuse me for a minute? JESSICA Sure. ABIGAIL Okay. ABIGAIL Excuse me. Excuse me! My flower shop is on the other side of that very thin wall. STEPHANIE And yet for some reason you're all the way over here. ABIGAIL This has been going on for two days and I am with some really important customers right now. Can't you do whatever it is you're doing some other time? STEPHANIE I want to take on bigger orders and I need to upgrade my appliances in case they start to come in. Come on, Ben. Break time's over. BEN She's the boss. GRACE Which way is the children's wing? CASSIE Right down there. You just have to be careful when you tell them what's in that box, because you're going to get swarmed. GRACE Jessica was so nice to sign these copies of her first two books, and I cannot believe I'm calling Jessica Carrington "Jessica" because I know her and she knows who I am! SAM So what've I got next? FLOOR NURSE Pre-op exam. You told Doctor Zemmick you'd fill in for her while she's out of town. SAM Great. Put the patient in exam room three; I'll be right there. You're not here to see a doctor, are you? Because I thought you didn't believe in those things. CASSIE Well, I don't mind running into one occasionally. SAM Well, I just have a minute to say hello. CASSIE Hello. SAM Hi. CASSIE It looks like you've been working hard. SAM Yeah. More than ever. I've got two surgeries lined up for tonight, and a few more bodies to patch up tomorrow afternoon. CASSIE They're more than just bodies, you know. SAM That is true. FLOOR NURSE Dr. Radford. Your patient is ready for you. SAM Tell him I'll be right there. FLOOR NURSE He's a she. SAM Right. Sorry, I've got to go. But I guess I'll see you CASSIE Soon. SAM Yeah. SEAN Is something up there? GEORGE Yeah, the wrong color. I've tried three different shades but I can't seem to get it right. JESSICA I can relate. I can't tell you how many times I've sat down to write my next book but I can't come up with the perfect idea. SEAN Except I've never heard you have a bad one. JESSICA Thanks. But I need to know for sure that I'm heading down the right path before I make a decision that could take up a big chunk of the rest of my life. GEORGE Maybe you should take another walk through Middleton. JESSICA That's not a bad idea. It might help me think of something to write about. GEORGE No, I mean I'm gonna throw another coat of paint up there and I don't want you to get the stuff all over you. JESSICA Oh. We'll get out of your way. MARTHA I've been going over my Tarynsville list and there's still one big item you could help me with. I need you to get me a cauldron. CASSIE And why would you think I'd be the right person to get you that? MARTHA Oh, please don't play games. I need the largest one you have -- so I can give the book reading a Halloween flair. Oh, next stop is the hardware store. I'm hoping that if I look my best they'll give a discount on broomsticks. Oh! CASSIE Here, use this. This was used in the early days of Middleton by coachman to see the things they had passed by. MARTHA A bit of a rear-view mirror. CASSIE Yeah. Perfect to see what's behind you. Can I help you? MEREDITH I hope so. I went to city hall looking for the mayor and they said she came here. MARTHA Meredith? Meredith Mitchell? MEREDITH Martha Endicott. MARTHA Oh well, it's Martha Tinsdale now. MEREDITH Oh, yes, Somebody said you got married. I just thought they were making it up. MARTHA Meredith and I went to college together. MEREDITH And of course you know what I've been up to since then. MARTHA I think maybe I've have seen you on tv a couple of times. MEREDITH Now, it's practically every night, reporting live from somewhere. Which is why the network sent me to this out-of-the-way little town. They want me to do a story on the book launch. MARTHA Our local event is going to be national news? MEREDITH You are gonna get so much attention. I hope you can live up to it. You have a lovely shop. I don't see anything in here I'd actually want to buy, but still, it is a lovely, lovely shop. CASSIE Great, thanks. MEREDITH Yes, well... CASSIE I take it you weren't exactly college besties. MARTHA I'm sure she came here hoping to see me fail. CASSIE Well, then this is your chance to prove her wrong. MARTHA If I can pull everything off. Oh, if only we had an actual enchantress living amongst us. Imagine what we could accomplish in Middleton then! ABIGAIL Cassie. Look at you sitting here, all alone. I'm about to go on a date with Dennis. CASSIE Your tennis player? ABIGAIL No, tennis is Carl. This is Dennis. Not to be confused with my out-of town bakery supplier, Brian. CASSIE So you've decided to start dating three men at the same time. ABIGAIL Not at the same time. Only when the others aren't here. STEPHANIE Cassie, your timing was perfect! Martha just asked me to bake a thousand "MupCakes" for the party after the book reading. ABIGAIL What's a MupCake? CASSIE It's the magical cupcakes that are eaten in Tarynsville. STEPHANIE Yeah, so it's a good thing you encouraged me to upgrade my appliances at my catering shop when you did. Otherwise, I'd never have been ready for a party this size. ABIGAIL So this was your idea? CASSIE I might have suggested, a while ago, that it was time for Stephanie to make some changes. ABIGAIL Next time could you suggest quieter ones? STEPHANIE Okay, I have no idea what a MupCake is supposed to taste like, but I was thinking of making them cherry, to represent the fires that light themselves in the book. CASSIE With orange frosting, for Halloween. STEPHANIE Cherry cupcakes with orange frosting? I don't really think that goes together. CASSIE Sometimes things that don't seem to match end up going together perfectly. ABIGAIL Well, I have some important duties of my own. Martha's asked me to make themed flower arrangements for the event. STEPHANIE Then I hope you can keep it down on your side of the wall. NICK Thanks for coming here with me. GRACE Sure. I wanted to read to the kids I gave books to yesterday. NICK Do you ever do anything that involve something other than reading or studying or being inside? GRACE Sometimes I read or study outside. Does that count? NICK No, not at all. COURTNEY It doesn't look like you have any more. Books. I saw you passing them out yesterday. GRACE Yeah, no, I'm book-less. I hope that's not why you came back to the hospital -- to get another one. COURTNEY Oh no, no, no. I had to come back for some tests. I had a brain tumor when I was seven and according to some chart I'm always at risk for another one, so. GRACE That sounds kind of serious. COURTNEY I don't know. It'll either happen or it won't. GRACE So what do you do while you're waiting to see if it does happen? COURTNEY Let's see... I went skydiving last week, and I'm going whitewater kayaking. Once you've had brain surgery, other stuff seems not so scary. GRACE Well, hey, I'm gonna go read to the kids if you want to come? COURTNEY Um... yeah, sure. GRACE I got Jessica to sign the books before I brought them here yesterday. She's staying at my house! COURTNEY Jessica Carrington is staying at your house? Well, you just became someone I like even more. NICK My dad said he's stuck here for the night, so I guess I need to spend the rest of my fast-food money. GRACE Oh, hey, Nick, this is -- COURTNEY Courtney. GRACE Courtney. NICK Hey. So I guess I'll see you later. Have fun reading Tarynsburg to the kids. GRACE It's Tarynsville. NICK I know. I just wanted to see how long it would take you to correct me. CASSIE I thought I might find you here. This old tree has a way of drawing people in. It's roots run deep. JESSICA I put a tree just like it in my books because Nana told me about one in her town. She'd walk there from the house where she worked and dream about life with the man that she loved. CASSIE I love walking here from Grey House, down the winding path. JESSICA There was a lot to see, yeah. CASSIE Are you working on your next book? JESSICA I am. It's not going so well. CASSIE I'm sure you'll come up with the right story eventually. It might end up being your most romantic one yet. BEN All right, we're all set. All you have to do is turn your new oven on and you're ready to go. STEPHANIE Good, because unlike in the Tarynsville books, those MupCakes aren't going to bake themselves. Okay, well that wasn't supposed to happen. BEN I checked the schematics of this building. There should have more than enough electricity flowing into this room. Unless somebody's draining all our power. STEPHANIE Let me explain to you what the word "share" means. ABIGAIL And then I'll explain what the words "I don't care" means. MARTHA Ladies, ladies, ladies! Please, please! We can't have you on opposite sides, arguing, when we need everyone working together in order to pull off what is going to be national news! MEREDITH Oh dear. Trouble in small-town paradise? MARTHA Trouble? No, no, no, no. No trouble. We were just discussing some of the new ideas I've come up with for the book launch. MEREDITH New ideas like what? MARTHA Like what? Lake how... in addition to the book reading and of course the party afterwards, that the entire town of Middleton is going to... Is going to be turned into Tarynsville itself! ABIGAIL The entire town? MARTHA Stephanie, you can make your bistro "Dendall's Dining Hall" and Abigail, your store will become "The Garden of Perpetual Joy." Of course, we only have a few days to do it, but the people in this town are known to get things done. MEREDITH Well, maybe you can share those old- fashioned values when I interview you the night of the event. MARTHA You're going to interview me on national tv? MEREDITH Oh yes. MARTHA Well, in that case, I need to go and buy a new outfit. MEREDITH Oh, and the camera adds years to your appearance, so you might want to get a facial, too. CASSIE Sam? SAM Cassie. CASSIE They let you out of the hospital. SAM For a bit. I need to stop by and check in with Eve and just thought I'd pick up something to go. CASSIE Well maybe we could actually sit down some time and eat a meal together. SAM I'd love that, but I've got my schedule so packed I don't even know when my next meal is. CASSIE Well, maybe something will open up. SAM If it does, I'll let you know, okay? It's the hospital. Sorry. Doctor Radford. Yes. Is it being rescheduled? Well, maybe we should take tomorrow's -- No, let's leave it open. Thanks. Well, something opened up. CASSIE Well I just happen to be free for dinner. SAM Pick you up at seven? CASSIE You remember where I live, right? SAM Yeah, I think it's still in my gps. See ya. CASSIE Bye. STEPHANIE Oh, hey! CASSIE Hi. STEPHANIE What do you think? It's supposed to look like Dendall's Dining Hall from Jessica's books. CASSIE I like it. Martha wants me to turn Bell, Book and Candle into "The Apothecary's Shoppe." Hi. You must be Carl. Abigail told me about her tennis player. I'm Cassie. ABIGAIL My cousin. CARL Nice to meet you. CASSIE You too. ABIGAIL Carl's just in town for the day. CARL Yeah, a tournament got rained out which gave me just enough time to stop off and see her. ABIGAIL Isn't that just so lucky? But I don't want to keep you here so long that you miss the next one. CARL Actually, I have plenty of time. The drive from here to there isn't very far, and ABIGAIL Carl, I think that's your car. You should go see. And I'm going to check that tournament schedule so I know the next time you're nearby. CARL I hope that's soon. ABIGAIL Me too. Bye. CASSIE Too bad he had to leave so soon. ABIGAIL Actually, I think I got him out the door at just in time, because DENNIS Abigail! Hi. CASSIE You think Jessica will like it? SEAN It's her words coming to life. She'll love it. CASSIE Everyone's working to make things as Tarynsville as possible before the big night. SEAN Actually, that's kind of why I'm here. I want to get something for Jessica to give her when her book comes out, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice. CASSIE Advice is free with every purchase. SEAN Oh. Thank you. CASSIE Thanks. SEAN I was hoping you might have an idea about what to get for her. CASSIE Why don't we start with what ideas you have? SEAN I don't have any. I've known her for years but sometimes I feel like I don't know her at all. Ever since I met Jessica, she's had no time for anything other than writing, which is why I wanted to get away with her. Which is why I wanted her to get away. And come here. What's that? CASSIE I picked this up in Azerbaijan. The country is known as the land of fire and this sparked my interest. SEAN It seems like the kind of thing Jessica might like. CASSIE Do you know what it does? SEAN It doesn't matter. It just seems like a thing that would exist in the world she created. It's decorative and mysterious and, I don't know, magical. CASSIE Why don't I wrap it up for you so you can give it to her when the time is right. JESSICA Sean? What are you doing here? SEAN Oh, I was uh... window shopping. But I didn't find the right window, so... I'll see you later. JESSICA I'd ask why Sean was acting so strange, but if I asked that every time, I'd always be asking. CASSIE How goes the writing? JESSICA I don't know. Something will come to me, eventually, but I've decided to stop thinking so hard about it. CASSIE Clearing your mind. That's good advice. JESSICA What's that? CASSIE I found that in the attic at Grey House. It's a map of old Middleton. JESSICA This is what the town looked like? CASSIE More than a hundred years ago, yeah. JESSICA I love this place. There's so much history here. CASSIE And an interesting future that's still yet to be. MARTHA Yes. I'm hiring you to dress as "the boy prince" from Tarynsville. NICK Maybe I should have read the books before I said yes to the job. MARTHA Nick, please. I have to make this event much bigger than what I planned and I thought having a character to greet the guests would give it that New York touch. NICK I could use the money. MARTHA Oh, and I'll also need you to speak in a British accent. NICK Very well, then. What would you like me to say? MARTHA Well, I'd like you to say something in a British accent. NICK I am speaking in an accent. MARTHA Oh. Yeah, still not hearing it. GRACE Mmm, smells good. CASSIE Hey, how was your day? COURTNEY It was amazing. You know, your daughter really knows how to tame a river. GRACE Now, now. CASSIE What? GRACE We went whitewater kayaking. CASSIE Well, I am so proud of you for being so brave and adventurous. GRACE I was actually kind of afraid, but I decided to do it anyway. Grandpa? Are you reading The Darkness of Tarynsville? GEORGE Yeah, I just picked it up to see what all the fuss is about. CASSIE And? GEORGE I agree with all the fuss. COURTNEY Okay, I think Desiree knows where the amulet is and is going to be the one who finally finds it. GEORGE How could she know that? She wasn't even born when it was hidden. GRACE Because her sister left her those clues before she died. CASSIE Yes. GEORGE I don't believe that she's dead. She's gonna show up in The Enchantress Unites, probably disguised as a sorceress. GRACE That could work. CASSIE Yeah, it could actually happen. GEORGE You've got to learn to read the words between the words. NICK Wasn't expecting to see you midday SAM I'm not even here. I just need to pick up some clean clothes for my date with Cassie. NICK You have time off for the first time in like forever and you're not spending it with your own son? I'm kidding. I'm glad you two are getting together. You deserve a break. SAM You know what? I think I might have time for a quick game. NICK Then we better make it quick. First one to score, wins. SAM This'll be a snap. NICK Oh. What a devastating loss. SAM Yeah, I was never even in it. MARTHA I knew you'd be able to get one! ABIGAIL You found Martha a cauldron? CASSIE Slightly used cauldron. SEAN Okay, here's how things are going to go. Jessica, you'll proceed down that aisle, looking beautiful, and then up these stairs. ABIGAIL I can put flowers on both sides. MEREDITH Make sure your new dress doesn't clash on-camera with the colors. SEAN I'll be standing here, waiting for you, then I'll take your hand -- We can practice that later but I'll remind you when it happens. GEORGE That enough? MARTHA No, I'll need three times that amount. The fire needs to rise and crackle and spark, just like in the book. CASSI There's going to be a fire? MARTHA Yes. A huge one. Underneath the cauldron. CASSIE There can't be a fire out here. Grey house is fragile. These branches are too close to the ground. The trees have a spirit of their own. I wouldn't want that to be damaged by the flames and the heat. JESSICA But there has to be a fire. Fires are a big part of my books. CASSIE Then we'll have to find another place to do your reading. MARTHA We don't have time to find a new location. It's almost Halloween! JESSICA Sean - SEAN We'll figure something out. We'll figure it out. MEREDITH Do I need to call the network and tell them this book reading might not happen? MARTHA No, it's happening. It's just that none of us has any idea where. GEORGE This is just like in The Darkness of Tarynsville when the royal council couldn't find a meeting ground for their autumn assemblage. ABIGAIL How'd that turn out? GEORGE It was horrible. Wars started; friendships were split. This might be even worse. MARTHA Cassie, I don't understand why you're still decorating your shop as if nothing's going wrong. Jessica and Sean are threatening to go back to New York if we don't find the perfect place for the reading, so the whole event might not happen at all! CASSIE I think everything will work out, somehow. MARTHA That's if I solve everybody's problems. Thank goodness I have years of experience doing just that. CASSIE If you're looking for an interesting tea, you might enjoy this. KRISTIN Hmm, I love rosemary on lamb. I've never tried it as a tea. CASSIE I'll make up a little canister for you. Oh, and if you like lamb, have you ever tried that little place called Merletto's on the way out of town? KRISTIN No, I don't think so. CASSIE It's worth the trip. KRISTIN Okay. Thank you. SAM How's Grace? I've seen her less than I've seen you. CASSIE She's good. She's got a new friend that is bringing out this daring spirit I never even know my daughter had. They went kayaking and Grace just told me she wants to give rock climbing a try. SAM I've never understood the appeal of hanging on the side of a rock. You've got stairs, you've got ladders -- lots of superior means of vertical perambulation. CASSIE You're very passionate about this. SAM Well, I've given it a lot of thought. CASSIE How's Nick? SAM He's good. CASSIE Well, I heard Martha hired him to dress up as a character from Tarynsville at the book launch. SAM My son is a working actor? Those are words that I never thought I'd hear myself say. KRISTIN Oh hi. CASSIE Hi. KRISTIN You were right. The lamb here was fantastic. CASSIE I thought you might like it. GREG Doctor Radford? SAM Yes? GREG You operated on me last week. SAM Yeah. Of course. Good to see you. KRISTIN Doctor Radford was amazing. CASSIE Sam really cares about his work. GREG I can't thank you enough. SAM You're welcome. KRISTIN Well, enjoy your meal. Bye. SAM Bye. GREG Good-night. CASSIE It must feel nice to know you've helped people like that. SAM It is nice. I just wish I could remember his name. I've been running around so much, doing so many surgeries, I'm hardly getting to know my patients at all. CASSIE You're still making a difference in their lives. SAM Sure, patching them up and sending them home. But they're more than just bodies, you know. Greg! That's his name. Greg. So, they say the lamb is good here? CASSIE Yeah. That's what people say. CASSIE Thank you. SAM Un-huh. I'm glad we could get together. CASSIE Yeah, it's nice to reconnect. SAM I'd say, "Let's do it again sometime," but I can't make any promises about when that "sometime" would even be. CASSIE Why don't we just make more of an effort to be in the same place at the same time? SAM Make more of an effort. I think I can live up to that. CASSIE Then it's a deal. SAM Deal. Well, I guess that's good night. CASSIE Good-night. You did everything you could, Sam. SAM I know. SAM Thanks for coming to drive home with me. NICK No problem. I kind of want to hear about your day. SAM You want to hear about my day? NICK Yeah, that surprised me as soon as I said it. FLOOR NURSE Doctor Radford? You're needed in the E.R. SAM I should take a look. It might not be too long. NICK No problem; go. SAM So what've we got? ER NURSE Sixteen year old female. Head trauma, possible fractures. SAM Is she conscious? ER NURSE In and out. We're waiting on transport to give us an I.D. SAM Grace.
