EDMOND HARRY LUCY LUCY Well, yeah, but, if it keeps on running and flowing, one day there will be nothing left. HARRY So tell me kids, what are you studying today? EDMOND We were wondering why there's always water running at the waterfall? But we didn't find the answer. HARRY A-ha! What you're looking for is called the Water Cycle. EDMOND Okay, but, what exactly is a Water Cycle? HARRY A cycle is something that never stops, a continuous circle, just like running water. LUCY Do you mean that it's magical? HARRY Not at all. There's always an explanation to a cycle. EDMOND I found it! EDMOND Ah, in fact, it's very simple. The water falls from the clouds, slides down the mountain to the sea, then it goes back up into the clouds. LUCY That's impossible. How does the water get back into the clouds? EDMOND Um, I don't know, maybe by jumping? HARRY No, not at all. Water exists in three different forms. You both know at least two of them. The first form water can take is the liquid form: the river, the pond, the waterfall, the rainfall, and anywhere you can go swimming. The next form water can take is... EDMOND I know! EDMOND The solid form. That's when it's cold. Water changes into snow and creates snowflakes. They're so beautiful! And we can also have snowball fights. LUCY When it's cold, water can also change into ice. It's even more solid than snow! That way, you can make ice castles! You can also ice skate on the pond when it's frozen. HARRY You're absolutely right. LUCY So, what about the third form of water? What is it? It can't be anything different than solid or liquid, right? EDMOND In the book, we see some sort of smoke symbol. What does this stand for? HARRY That stands for the gas form. How can I explain it to you? _Hmm-hmm_ There! Look at the pot on the stove. LUCY Of course! The gas form is what happens when it's hot. The water changes into smoke. HARRY You're right. It's called water vapor. And it's in this state of vapor that water can go back up into the clouds. EDMOND I understand now! When it rains or snows, the water falls from the clouds, the sun melts the snow which runs down to the sea,`and then, um... Oh no, I forgot what happens next. HARRY It's okay. Let's start with the sea. When it's heated up by the sun, the water evaporates. LUCY It turns into water vapor and rises up. EDMOND Okay. Then when there are clouds, the water falls back onto earth as rain, or even snow when it's Winter. LUCY Then it slides all the way back down to the sea. HARRY Almost! The rainwater and the melted snow will first run into the creeks, then the rivers which will take it back to the sea. EDMOND That's when the cycle starts over! The water rises to the clouds, falls back onto the ground, then flows to the sea. LUCY That's why there's always water at the waterfall. HARRY Very well done, kids. You've understood the cycle! LUCY Yay! EDMOND Yay! HARRY You know, sometimes water needs to take a break from its cycle. LUCY What? EDMOND What? HARRY Just long enough for us to make vegetable soup! EDMOND Yay! LUCY Yay!
