AGRICULTURE_SPECIALIST BARRY BOWLES CIPRIANI DOCTOR DOCTOR_1 DOCTOR_2 ENID FINN JAMES LATTUCA MALE_PASSENGER MALE_SUSPECT_2 MEDBALA MOFFIT MORRELLI NARRATEUR NIA_SAINT NUGENT OFFICER OFFICERS PASSENGER SUSPECT VALENTI VAZQUEZ WONG FINN We got two guys coming from completely different parts of the world. FINN Things are going this way for you, downhill, they’re not getting better. FINN Both of them with stories that really make no sense. FINN If it’s the truth, he’ll tell us. SUSPECT It is the truth. FINN Ok, then he’ll tell with us. FINN We’re going for the x-ray. NUGENT We got a heroin trafficker living at the address. LATTUCA That’s what I’m saying. OFFICERS Relax. Relax. Just relax. Relax! FINN You are very nervous. The pellets inside of your stomach will begin to unravel. And then you will die. NARRATEUR At New York’s JFK Airport, millions of dollars of contraband are seized every year. NARRATEUR And officers with the Department of Homeland Security work around the clock to stop this flood of illegal goods and drugs into the country. BOWLES Hold on. Stop. WONG I want to get to the bottom of this. LATTUCA It’s not the truth, stop saying to me you’re telling me the truth. FINN Speak English? A little English? I speak a little Spanish, so we’ll work out well. FINN JFK Airport sees approximately 20,000 or so passengers a day. FINN And we’re looking for that one percent of those passengers that might be doing something wrong. FINN I love catching drugs, I mean, that's what I find more fun than anything. It’s always coming in, you know, it’s always coming in. It's a hunt. FINN And when you find it, it’s very satisfying. NIA SAINT Thank you. CIPRIANI Have your passports out. NIA SAINT Passports? Thank you. NIA SAINT How many bags do you have? MALE PASSENGER This one. NIA SAINT Just that? You don’t have any checked in luggage? MALE PASSENGER Nope. NIA SAINT Okay. Thank you. CIPRIANI How many bags did he have? That’s it? Alright. FINN We got a guy coming from Ecuador. He looks a little suspicious. He’s got no checked luggage. So we’re gonna go meet him at the gate, bring him down and talk to him, and see what his story is. FINN I just want to start, get this going, and see what the outcome is going to be. FINN It’s always anxiety. NIA SAINT Joe. Joe, there he is. NIA SAINT Where are you coming from? (Passenger replies) NIA SAINT How long were you there? MALE PASSENGER Dos semanas. Dos semanas y media. NIA SAINT Do you speak English? MALE PASSENGER A little bit. NIA SAINT A little bit? NIA SAINT Do you work? MALE PASSENGER Yep. CIPRIANI What do you do for them? MALE PASSENGER Driver. Delivery. CIPRIANI Driver? CIPRIANI Who were you with? On this trip, who did you visit? MALE PASSENGER Where? In my country? CIPRIANI Yeah, in your country. MALE PASSENGER I visited my kids. CIPRIANI Your kids? MALE PASSENGER Yeah, I got three kids over there. And my wife. CIPRIANI Oh, your wife? CIPRIANI And where were you last night? Where did you stay last night? MALE PASSENGER My house in Ecuador. CIPRIANI In Ecuador? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. CIPRIANI Ok, let me explain to you what’s going to happen next. Ok, we looked at your luggage. What we’re going to do is we’re going to bring you into a private room where we’re going to search your body to make sure nothing is on your body. If we’re satisfied you could leave right away. If not, we may want to talk to you. MALE PASSENGER Ok. CIPRIANI Ok. Problem with that? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. No, no problem. CIPRIANI Alright, you follow me. FINN He’s a little nervous, a little fidgety. I don’t know, we’ll see how he reacts when we get in the room, we start getting a little more into his travel, and why he travelled. CIPRIANI What I need you to do is take your hat off, put it on the table. Take your jacket off and give it to me please. CIPRIANI How much money are you traveling with today? MALE PASSENGER Forty dollars. CIPRIANI That’s it? MALE PASSENGER Yep. CIPRIANI Ok. CIPRIANI Ok, stay right there. Like TV. Alright, just put your hands like this and I’m going to search your body. NIA SAINT There doing a pat down for any contraband that he might have strapped on his body. FINN Alright, Rafael, so tell me about this trip. MALE PASSENGER What? FINN What brought it on? Why’d you go? MALE PASSENGER My daughter called me. ’Cause they got like a tournament ’cause she do like...Graffiti. FINN Graffiti? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. And she told me daddy need to came to my country. So, I’m gonna try. And I talked to my boss. And my boss told me, “You can go right now and not at Christmas.” Because I was gonna go until Christmas. FINN Ok. MALE PASSENGER So he tell me, “If you wanna go right now, go right now…take like two weeks or three weeks.” ’Cause uh, like a five years, I didn’t go to see my daughters. FINN So what happened? MALE PASSENGER I see my kid. I see my wife. FINN Where was the tournament? MALE PASSENGER Hm? FINN Where was the tournament? MALE PASSENGER Guayaquil…Ecuador. FINN Where? MALE PASSENGER Ecuador. FINN Where? MALE PASSENGER Guayaquil. FINN Ok, where? Was it on the street? Was it...? MALE PASSENGER No, it was a school. FINN It was a school? MALE PASSENGER Yeah, a school. FINN How many people were involved in the tournament? MALE PASSENGER Well, it was uh...she was the uh... MALE PASSENGER She’s high school. FINN Ok. MALE PASSENGER She was in a little one. MALE PASSENGER So she just completed the rest of the school and around… around Guayaquil. FINN Ok, how many people were involved with the tournament, approximately? MALE PASSENGER Like uh twenty? Twenty five? FINN How’d she do? MALE PASSENGER She won third. FINN Third place? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. FINN Ok, ok, and now what happened in the last five years that you never went to see your children? MALE PASSENGER Cause, uh, cause I was, I was with another girl here. FINN Ok. That’s fine, I mean people change relationships all the time but your children are always your children. So... MALE PASSENGER Yeah, no I always take care of my kids. FINN Ok, so what happened in the last five years that you just wouldn’t travel? MALE PASSENGER Cause uh, let me explain this you see. My, my… MALE PASSENGER My son’s mother, my wife… She had another relationship over there. FINN Ok, do you have family in Ecuador? MALE PASSENGER Yep. FINN Where do they live? MALE PASSENGER Guayaquil. FINN Ok, where does your wife live? MALE PASSENGER Ecuador. MALE PASSENGER In Guayaquil. FINN Ok, so there would be no problem in the last five years to go to Ecuador, Guayaquil Ecuador, and stay at family’s house. Then you could see your kids. Right? Once a year, once every two years. But for five years you don’t do that? Something don’t sound right. CIPRIANI Relax, relax. FINN Just relax. CIPRIANI Relax. Relax. One second. VAZQUEZ We see several thousand packages a day. VAZQUEZ And one of those packages could be full of drugs. VALENTI Our job is to find all types of contraband. VAZQUEZ We have a targeting team. If they find something that's odd, then we target those packages. VALENTI Hey guys we got a box. VAZQUEZ These are engine pistons. Yes. VALENTI Engine pistons. VAZQUEZ If we’re curious about something, we just probe it very lightly and if it’s negative, we just sent it on its ways. VALENTI As from what I can tell, this piston looks good. Um, a piston like this is made for an automobile. VAZQUEZ What we’re going to do next is we also check the boxes. Within the box, sometimes they conceal the drugs. MORRELLI Probably got like 929.4 in these ones. VALENTI Want to weigh them all? VAZQUEZ How much was it? MORRELLI This was 938.5, this was 929.4. MORRELLI This one is 949.3. Getting a little heavier now. MORRELLI These are like 938, 949, 953 something like that. VAZQUEZ We gotta find out which one is the heaviest and drill that one. This is 940. MORRELLI Let me go get the drill, and we’ll drill right through these. Alright, I’ll be right back. VALENTI Along this little ridge here, it’s a press fit. Something in this little parcel here is pressed into the cylinder head. So inside here is a cavity. MORRELLI I don’t know if this is going to work, just watch your eyes. MORRELLI Here we go guys, get your test kit. Get your test kit. Now this is the one that weighed 953 point. VAZQUEZ This is the heaviest one. I think that was the heaviest one there. MORRELLI We’re going to drill them all then. VALENTI What you’re seeing is a positive reaction. As you can see the color is turning purple and you look on the chart here. When it goes to purple it tests positive for heroin. So we’re good to go. FINN You have family in Ecuador? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. FINN So there would be no problem in the last five years to go to Ecuador, Guayaquil Ecuador, stay at family’s house. But for five years you don’t do that? Something don’t sound right. FINN So you got a roundtrip ticket to leave JFK, go to Guayaquil Ecuador. And then come back on November 20th? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. FINN Ok, and what happened? MALE PASSENGER November twenty I come back. FINN Today’s the 28th. MALE PASSENGER Twenty eighth, wait, wait. No, wait, wait. FINN Alright, so November 20 what happens? MALE PASSENGER They tell me, “You’re not in the system.” What do you mean I’m not in the system? FINN You went to the airport? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. MALE PASSENGER So they tell me, “Somebody made it wrong, it’s my mistake I’m gonna fix it.” “You better fix it, I’m not gonna pay nothing, that’s your fault.” FINN I really, I’m trying to believe you. I have a hard time though. MALE PASSENGER Alright. FINN So your mother and your sister are outside to pick you up. Yes? MALE PASSENGER I think, yeah. FINN No, don’t give me a think, it’s yes or no. MALE PASSENGER She told me, she told me... FINN When did you call her? MALE PASSENGER Today. FINN Today. Ok. So your mother knows you’re coming, right now. MALE PASSENGER Yeah. FINN Ok, we’re gonna start making our phone calls. MALE PASSENGER Alright. FINN And I’m gonna call your sister. NIA SAINT Hi Gina, this is Officer Saint with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. How are you? FINN Lately, we’ve had an increased problem of people bringing drugs in from Ecuador. In their stomachs. NIA SAINT When was the last time you spoke to Rafael? When was he supposed to come back? FINN Now lately, we’ve been getting a new form. And people have been swallowing liquid pellets. MALE PASSENGER Mhm. FINN So, if you don’t have a really good x-ray machine or the advanced x-ray machine, it’s not gonna see the liquid pellets in your stomach. But, I’m sure as you can imagine, here in the United States, especially here at JFK, we have the best machines you could possibly think of. NIA SAINT Um, I spoke to the sister, I had asked her if he had called her when he cancelled the trip. She said yes, that he had called her and told her that something happened with his son, therefore he needed to extend his stay. FINN Ok. FINN We spoke to your sister. MALE PASSENGER Yeah. FINN And they say something different. MALE PASSENGER What do they say? FINN They say something happened to your son, that’s why you couldn’t make it last week. MALE PASSENGER I tell them what had happened. FINN No, you told them that something happened to your son, so I’m staying an extra week. MALE PASSENGER No, I didn’t say that. FINN So she made that up? So your sister is lying? MALE PASSENGER Yeah, I didn’t tell her that. FINN Ok, so your sister’s lying. FINN You told your sister that you’re staying extra because something happened to your son. That’s what you told her. Because she would not make that up. There would be no reason for her, she wouldn’t just think of that out of the blue. FINN Things are going this way for you, downhill, and they’re not getting better. You need to start telling me things so I can let you walk out of this room. Because right now I don’t believe a word you’re telling me. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST Do you have any fruits? PASSENGER No. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST Do you have any vegetables? PASSENGER No. ENID In the last five years CBP has made over a 100,000 thousand agricultural seizures, and as a matter of fact, last year they made over 25,000 agricultural seizures in one year. ENID So we’ve been very, very busy people. ENID I asked you to do that, ma’am. PASSENGER Oh, my God. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST Dried beef. AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST What did she tell you she had? ENID She had rice, that's all she said, was rice and spices. ENID Do you have any other food you want to tell us about? You didn't tell us about the beef, did you? PASSENGER Ma’am I tell... ENID Answer my question. Answer my question. Do you have any other food in your bags? PASSENGER No. ENID You sure? PASSENGER Yes. ENID There are all kinds of reasons that we take meat products. They may be harbingers of all kinds of viruses in animals. ENID This is the rice she declared. ENID Ma’am… PASSENGER Please, this is for my sister. ENID Ma’am you cannot, ma’am listen to me, you cannot ask a federal officer to give you prohibited food. PASSENGER No. ENID You just did. Do not ask a federal officer to give you back prohibited food. ENID If you don’t declare like that, it's a 300 hundred dollar fine. Alright. Just so you know. Next time don’t bring it. Don’t bring it. Don’t bring meats, don’t bring rice because it’s not allowed from your country. Don’t bring fresh fruits or fresh vegetables. Ma’am, are you listening to me? PASSENGER Yes, I listen to you. ENID Ma’am, pay attention, ok, because next time you will be fined. Alright? ENID The lying continues and it’s usually unfortunately the females that lie and I hate to say that, it’s killing me. And if they’re traveling with a male companion, it’s usually a little arguing or yelling like, you didn’t tell me that, why are you doing that? ENID Sometimes it’s an excuse. But it is the woman who knows what’s in the bags. And I hate to say it. ENID Very satisfied when I see something and I take it out of the system that may ruin our economy here, but I’m more satisfied when I see in the person’s eyes that they understand why it was seized and they understand why they shouldn’t do it again and maybe educate them as to the importance of not repeating that violation. ENID I don’t always get it, but when I do I love it. That to me is a good day. ENID You’re gonna go straight down…see, follow all those people out the door. And next time, tell the truth, ok? PASSENGER Ok. ENID Alrighty. MORRELLI Get your test kit. Get your test kit. VALENTI What you’re seeing is a positive reaction. VAZQUEZ We’re going to go ahead and call HSI to tell them that we have a positive exam and they’re going to take this investigation further. NUGENT Nugent. VALENTI How’s it going, this is Officer Valenti, just want to give you a heads up we got a positive on that possible heroin we just checked out. NUGENT So this is heroin, right? Ok, so alright, I’ll take a look at that. VALENTI Ok, thanks. NUGENT You there James? JAMES Yeah. NUGENT It’s from India. JAMES I was wondering if it’s bogus addresses and they’re just going to a package store. NUGENT We actually have the address, but we don’t know much about it. Uh, they’re saying that this may be connected to other loads that came in in previous days and weeks. Hopefully we can connect these together and get a clearer picture of who is supposed to receive these drugs. NUGENT So I’m not coming up with anything with this name. Hm. NUGENT These kinds of seizures are all about timing. We have to get these drugs out, we gotta find out where it’s going, get as much intelligence as we can on who is supposed to receive it, and we gotta get it out the door fast. FINN Things are going this way for you, downhill, they’re not getting better. You need to start telling me things so I can let you walk out of this room ’cause right now, I don’t believe a word you’re telling me. And there is something going on here. MALE PASSENGER There is no... FINN Yeah, I think there is. FINN Ok, alright, so your wife in Ecuador, when was the last time you saw her? MALE PASSENGER She drove me to the airport. FINN You stayed with her? You stayed in the house with her and the kids? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. FINN You expect me to believe that? I want to talk to her. MALE PASSENGER You need a phone number? FINN Yes sir. MALE PASSENGER You can call her up. FINN We will. NIA SAINT Ok, when was the last time you saw him? NIA SAINT She said um, the only thing, the only event they had with his daughter was the first communion yesterday. FINN But what was she saying about three days? NIA SAINT She said she had seen him three days ago. FINN But he was saying that he stayed with her, right? CIPRIANI What are you thinking about? MALE PASSENGER What’s going on here? CIPRIANI Yeah, that’s alright. MALE PASSENGER I don’t know why my wife she lie. CIPRIANI I don’t know either. FINN What do you think? NIA SAINT He’s definitely hiding something. FINN Yeah, I mean… FINN Rafael, before I call your wife, I just want to get some things down. Your wife in, well your ex-wife, your lady Jalita? Right? MALE PASSENGER Yeah, that’s in Ecuador. FINN In Ecuador, right. Before I call her I just want to make sure, so, you were with her, you stayed in the house with her and the kids? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. FINN Ok, so you stayed with her the whole time? MALE PASSENGER Yeah. FINN Ok, so you slept at her house? FINN Now, now I have a problem. Ok. We just spoke to Jalita. MALE PASSENGER Uhuh. FINN And she said she hasn’t seen you in three days. FINN Yeah. She said there was no graffiti contest for your daughter, nothing about that. She actually said which I don’t know why you wouldn’t say this because this would be a good reason to go down there, but anything else happen with your daughter recently? MALE PASSENGER No. FINN Nothing? Nothing? MALE PASSENGER What? I’m going for that reason. FINN For that. Ok, she said your daughter just had her first communion yesterday. MALE PASSENGER No. FINN What do you mean, no? FINN Did you swallow any pellets of heroin today? FINN Did you swallow any pellets of heroin today? MALE PASSENGER No. FINN No? Nothing? You have nothing in your stomach but what you’ve eaten, right? No liquid pellets? MALE PASSENGER No. FINN No heroin. MALE PASSENGER No. FINN No powder, no cocaine. MALE PASSENGER No. FINN Nothing. Clean. FINN Ok, so Rafael, this is what’s going to happen. I’m gonna go make my phone calls, were going for the x-ray, we’re going to find out everything that’s in your stomach today. Okay? FINN We called your mother, we called your sister. Do you want us to call anyone else for you, on your behalf? MALE PASSENGER If my mom is ready. You called my Mom and I’m gonna stay here. FINN Okay. MALE PASSENGER Too tight. OFFICER Alright, she’s gonna loosen them. FINN What we’re going to do is we’re gonna put handcuffs on him for his safety and ours, ’cause we’re going to be bringing him out by where the planes take off on the tarmac. We’re going to put him in one of our cars and we’re going to take him over to our local medical facility to have a doctor take a picture of his stomach. FINN The only thing that I think is true is the fact that he left on this day and came back on another day. I mean, that’s the only thing I think that’s pretty much verified as true. CIPRIANI Have a seat right down there. FINN We called multiple people, you know, it’s just everything he said kind of didn’t work. So here we are. CIPRIANI Here, just relax, ok. MORRELLI I don’t know if this is going to work, just watch your eyes. VAZQUEZ We probed the pistons and it looked powdery so we have to test it. And it tested positive for heroin. So once we know it tested positive for heroin, now we do the next step which is we’re going to have to remove the heroin from the concealment itself. VAZQUEZ Ok, that’s a good grip. MORRELLI Yeah, alright good, beautiful. (Bleep) MORRELLI This is the bottom part. That is the hole we drilled. MORRELLI This is basically our obligation as CBP officers. This is what we do. It’s not going to end this war, but it’s a small contribution. MORRELLI Who says the 928s are loaded, and who says the 950s are. They’re probably all loaded. But it’s funny how the weight difference wasn’t that, was kind of significant, but not, ya know. MORRELLI Alright, so who says I can do it on one hit? VAZQUEZ Do it, I’m with you. Boom! There we go. VALENTI Loaded! MORRELLI The one hit wonder right there, huh. VAZQUEZ There it is right there. Beautiful. Ha! VAZQUEZ Yeah buddy. There we go. They’re all in. All of them. MORRELLI Good to go, that’s beautiful. Nice, very nice. MORRELLI Just put them on the scale. Get them all out at once and put them all on the scale. VAZQUEZ Since this was hollow, we kind of figured it out that they could just stick it in there and they made it fit just perfectly in there, as you can see. MEDBALA One thousand, one hundred, sixty-seven point four grams. NUGENT The address, six—are you doing the SQAD. LATTUCA Yeah, I’m doing the SQAD first. NUGENT [Bleep] Street, Northeast—NE. NUGENT Now the investigation begins. NUGENT Right now what we have is this package is meant for D.C. They’re saying that this may be connected to other loads that came in in previous days and weeks. NUGENT Hey John, check this out. LATTUCA Is this related to the seizure tonight? NUGENT No, this is tonight’s. LATTUCA Ok. NUGENT Ok, it just happened to come up, right. It’s going to this address, ok. Look at what comes up. LATTUCA Are you kidding me? This guy used his real name to ship it in? NUGENT No, the address is what it’s, it’s a search of the address, and he’s a, we got a heroin trafficker living at the address, could you be that crazy…? LATTUCA That’s what I’m saying. NUGENT Is he sending packages to his actual address? And it’s, that’s January, right? That’s this year. LATTUCA Yes. NUGENT It can’t, it can’t be that dumb. NUGENT We haven’t even seen the package yet and we’ve already got an idea that this is connected to another case down in our D.C. office. FINN Rafael, this is what’s going to happen, were going for the x-ray, were going to find out everything that’s in your stomach today. FINN There’s no reason for people to deceive us like he has been. People only hide things and say things like that to hide what’s in them. So we’ll see, only the x-ray will know. FINN We got to wait for the doctor to arrive to take the x-ray. We got one more flight coming in from Nigeria, I don’t know, hopefully we’ll find something on that and we’ll get lucky. FINN That is your bag, right? Everything in there is yours, right? MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah. FINN Who in Nigeria knows your [sic] here? MALE SUSPECT 2 I can’t remember. FINN So what are you travelling with, you said 5,000? MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah. No, five thousand two hundred and something. FINN Ok. BOWLES What do you think, Joe? Yeah? FINN I like it. FINN Bring him in the room, see what his story is then. MALE SUSPECT 2 Idris? FINN Idris, what we’re going to do is we’re going to take you to a private room, we’re going to search your body to make sure you’re not carrying anything on your body. No, no, no. MALE SUSPECT 2 I’m ready, sir. FINN Keep everything on. FINN Very nervous. Um, you know we could see his heart was racing, you could see his neck pumping and that was just basic questioning when we first approached him. BOWLES He’s a pretty good candidate. That raises some serious red flags, we’ll see where it goes. FINN We gotta start talking, okay? We go through your bags, there’s nothing in your bags, we check your body, there’s nothing on your body. So, we bring people in this room whose stories don’t make sense, their stories aren’t adding up. They’re very nervous, like yourself. Okay. FINN So, I’m going to call, who? Your cousin here? MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah, my cousin’s wife, or my cousin, both of them. FINN Your cousin’s wife. MALE SUSPECT 2 Or my cousin, both of them. FINN Ok, so they both know you’re here. MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah. FINN And then, when? You spoke to them a week and a half ago? MALE SUSPECT 2 No, on Saturday or Sunday. FINN On Saturday, when you booked the ticket. MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah. FINN So how do they know you actually made the flight? MALE SUSPECT 2 They may have been thinking I was going to come tomorrow…because I got confused with that ticket. FINN So they don’t know you’re here. MALE SUSPECT 2 They don’t know I’m here, but they know I’m gonna be here tomorrow morning. Because I called them, they know. FINN Ok, hold on. Stop. What are you going to do tonight? MALE SUSPECT 2 I’m going to go there, I’m going to go there. FINN What if they’re not home? MALE SUSPECT 2 They’re going to be home for me. FINN What if? I’m not saying. MALE SUSPECT 2 She offered me... FINN What if she’s not home? MALE SUSPECT 2 She… If she’s not home she’s going to call her dad, ’cause she’s going to see her dad. Her dad is going to give me a key. FINN How do you know that? MALE SUSPECT 2 She’s my cousin’s wife, they lived with us too. FINN Ok, well you haven’t spoken to them since Saturday, and they think you’re coming tomorrow. So what if they’re not here? MALE SUSPECT 2 No. FINN Ok, so you’re right now, in the United States, in another country and nobody knows you’re here. Right? MALE SUSPECT 2 I told them I was coming like a month and a half ago. FINN Huh? MALE SUSPECT 2 You not understand? FINN No. Not at all. I don’t think you get what you’re trying to say. MALE SUSPECT 2 You understand what I’m trying to say? Like… FINN No. I don’t. MALE SUSPECT 2 I told him I was coming like a month and a half ago. FINN Ok, stop. Here’s the deal, I’m sure you’ve heard that we have a big problem here, with people bringing heroin pellets in their stomach, from Nigeria to the United States. FINN You live in Nigeria, it’s a big problem there. MALE SUSPECT 2 Yes. FINN Just like we have a big problem here. FINN Ok, the last time you were here was when? MALE SUSPECT 2 Let me check the passport. FINN Come on, you’re coming around the world, don’t tell me you don’t remember. MALE SUSPECT 2 I think it was about 4 or 5 months, 3, 4, 5 months. MALE SUSPECT 2 I can’t remember. FINN Ok, alright. You come to New York? Yes? You came to New York? MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah. FINN Where did you tell them you were going? MALE SUSPECT 2 Tell who? FINN The airline, when you booked… MALE SUSPECT 2 The airline didn’t ask me any question. FINN Listen, Idris. MALE SUSPECT 2 The airline don’t ask me where I’m going. They don’t know which hotel I stay at. They just ask me where I’m going…finished. FINN Okay, when did you end up in New York? MALE SUSPECT 2 Like after three days. FINN After three days. FINN Your cousin can verify all of this? MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah. FINN You have to think about that, I want to know. MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah. FINN Yes? MALE SUSPECT 2 Yeah. FINN Ok, so we’re going to call him and he’s gonna tell us these same things? MALE SUSPECT 2 He should, yeah. FINN No, no, no, there’s no should, if it’s the truth he’ll tell us. MALE SUSPECT 2 It is the truth. FINN Ok, then he’ll tell us. MALE SUSPECT 2 You already know too, why would he be lying? MALE SUSPECT 2 Wait, wait, wait, even check my, check my... MALE SUSPECT 2 I have anxiety. FINN Me too. You’re giving it to me. FINN The 6-4-6 number which is the cousin’s wife here, we’re going to have to call her to get the cousin in Atlanta’s phone number. MOFFIT Ok, alright let me get that number for you. MOFFIT Yes, hello may I speak to Comfort please. FINN If you’re not up doing anything wrong, there’s no reason for you to be anxious, scared, nothing. MOFFIT Yeah, Comfort is this you? Hi, this is U.S. Customs in New York City calling from JFK airport. FINN You’ve been here a while, your hearts racing, you are very nervous, your blood is boiling. Pellets inside of your stomach will not last like they normally would. You have never been in this scenario, the pellets inside of you right now will begin to unravel. Ok, and then you will die. MOFFIT I’m calling because are you expecting anybody from outside of the United States? Who were you expecting? An Idris? FINN Did you swallow any pellets of heroin today? MALE SUSPECT 2 No. FINN Did you swallow anything today? MALE SUSPECT 2 Food. I had food. FINN Food, just food. Okay. MOFFIT I spoke to the wife first, called her up, she’s here in New York. Ok, I asked her if she’s expecting anybody, she said yes, she gave me his name, I said, “When is he supposed to be here?” She said, “Either yesterday or today.” MOFFIT And what’s the relation of Idris to you, ma’am? Your husband’s brother? MOFFIT I said ok, “Well, was it cousin or brother?” “Uh cousin.” “Can I have your husband’s name and phone number?” She gives me his name, he’s down in Atlanta like he said, I called him up. MOFFIT Yes, hello can I speak to [bleep], please. MOFFIT I said are you expecting anybody today? He said, “Yeah, I’m expecting Idris.” “When is he coming in?” “He’s coming in today.” “I said, “Ok, where are you right now?” “I’m in Atlanta.” FINN His name is what? What do they call him? MOFFIT Uh, I asked the wife what the husband’s name is, she said the husband’s name is [bleep]. I said, “Does he have any other nicknames?” She said they call him [bleep]. So I remember he gave us a name like Razik or Reziks, so I don’t know where that... FINN He did say another name and I don’t think it was [bleep]. MOFFIT No, I don’t know where it came from, I wrote it down. But I don’t know where that other nickname came from. FINN Idris, what’s your cousin’s name? MALE SUSPECT 2 They call him [bleep] or Shala. FINN Shala or Razak? You don’t know his last name? [Bleeps] FINN [Bleep]? Is that a match? MOFFIT She said, [bleep], I wrote it down, I said how do you spell it? FINN Call him back, just see what he says with that. MOFFIT Ok, alright. FINN The name’s off, so they can only rehearse so far, it’s a basic part of the story that you should know. MOFFIT So what does he call you? Do you have a nickname? How does he, what does he call you? MOFFIT Razik is his cousin’s middle name, that’s why he calls him Razik. FINN Ok, alright. MOFFIT He said on his last trip, in April, he said he stayed down there about four to five days, ’cause his cousin is constantly back and forth between Atlanta and New York. FINN Check that out. MOFFIT I got a good text message. FINN What do you think that that word is? MOFFIT The Yankee? FINN Yeah, it’s gotta be good. FINN I was reading a text in your phone, saying you’re going to the Yankee to see a doctor about your stomach. MALE SUSPECT 2 I’m going to the yankee yeah to see a doctor here. FINN What does that mean? MALE SUSPECT 2 Yankee, yankee is American, that’s what we call Americans, yankee. FINN I know. MALE SUSPECT 2 Yankee. Yankee. FINN Ok, so you’re going to see a doctor on this trip. MALE SUSPECT 2 I should I should. FINN Don’t tell me you should, what is the truth? What is it? MALE SUSPECT 2 No both. MALE SUSPECT 2 I’m coming to shop and maybe see… ’Cause as I’m talking to you right I’ve farted like three or four times today. Seriously. (Laughter) MALE SUSPECT 2 You know what I mean, I don’t know what to do for it. FINN They don’t smell so you’re not having that much trouble. MALE SUSPECT 2 You might never know. MOFFIT No just sit back, just relax. He’s still pumping hard. He’s still pumping hard. FINN Alright, so here’s the deal, we’re going for the x-ray, we will find out everything inside your stomach, and then if there is something there, you just told us for an hour that you don’t have nothing. BOWLES I really hate going against one of my colleagues being the supervisor of Finn, but if I had to make the call, yes I would take him. Results? I’m somewhere in the middle...50/50, but if I was to place a bet I would say yes. BARRY Well, right now we’re heading over to our JNSU offices, which is over in the national terminal. NUGENT The plan right now is that we find out what information is on this package. Find out how our CBP officers are linking this together with previous seizures, we’ve already linked it ourselves. To the limited information that we got, we were able to still connect it to a case over in D.C., so hopefully we can turn this into a successful controlled delivery. VALENTI Hey. NUGENT What’s going on guys? How you doing? VALENTI Well here we go, we got some gifts. NUGENT Bearing gifts. BARRY This is new. NUGENT There we go. LATTUCA Pistons. VAZQUEZ This is the real stuff here. We had to knock off the head, see how the head’s broke right here? BARRY Oh wow. NUGENT Yeah. BARRY You guys did a good job. Same one? NUGENT Same thing. [NYACC] package coming through JFK, heroin from India. So it’s gotta be connected, that’s not coincidence. VALENTI Yeah, totally. NUGENT But we’ll see, you know, now what we’ll do is if this is the only thing at this address then we’re going to throw it to our D.C. SAC and hopefully they’ll run with it tomorrow. LATTUCA Our ultimate goal right now is to get these drugs, deliver them to the intended recipient and arrest the violator. So I think we got a good chance at arresting somebody if we can make this delivery happen. NUGENT Ok, alright, thanks a lot, Tom. Alright, bye. LATTUCA I take it he knows the address. NUGENT Not only does he know the address, but he knows the name, he goes, “Oh, that’s one of their old names that they used to use.” He goes, “Get this thing into the mail tonight,” he goes, “we’re delivering it tomorrow morning.” LATTUCA That’s phenomenal. NUGENT Yeah, he was very happy to hear that. LATTUCA What happened right now is we reached out to the case agent in Washington, D.C. He wants the drugs ASAP and they’re looking at doing a drug delivery tomorrow, tomorrow morning. NUGENT So now it’s a race to make sure that we can get it to them. BARRY The heroin, the total was about 1.1653 kilograms. NUGENT Right now, we’re gonna take everything, the package, and all the contents is going to go to our D.C. SAC they can actually use this during the controlled delivery if they want. NUGENT They know exactly what to expect. So if the box is different, if they go to pick it up and it’s too light or way too heavy, somebody may turn around and just say, “Not for me,” walk away, and that could end the case, so…if we can get this package on the flight and get it down to our agents in D.C., they won’t suspect anything because it’ll be on time and we’ll be able to get an arrest out of it. LATTUCA The clock is ticking. NUGENT I don’t know if they’re going to make it. They’re cutting it very close. FINN So we got two guys coming from completely different parts of the world. Both of them with stories that really make no sense. FINN Um, we’ve been trying to confirm a bunch of things they’ve been saying, we really can’t do it. So we’re here at the medical facility and we’re going to have the doctors take a picture of both of them and see what’s inside their stomachs. FINN I mean, there’s pressure when you come in here and it’s just one guy. With two guys, yes, absolutely. FINN Thank you, doc. DOCTOR Alright, you’re welcome. FINN A lot of pressure. DOCTOR Don’t move, okay? FINN I’m nervous, I don’t know. We’ll see what the x-ray says. DOCTOR 1 It looks negative. DOCTOR 2 It’s a neg. Guys. MOFFIT Ok. MALE SUSPECT 2 Told you. MOFFIT Ok, I’m happy for you. FINN Yeah, it’s disappointing, I’m not going to lie, I don’t want to see him go to jail or see him harmed. FINN But now we got the individual from Ecuador on the table and I’m really praying that this one is positive. FINN If you can go through a season batting five hundred, you’re breaking records. So I’ll take it. FINN Right now we’re at a local medical facility. Um, the doctors here, were ready, we’re going to put him on the table and light him up, see what the picture shows. I’m always concerned if it’s negative, nobody wants a negative, we’ve obviously, you know, spent a lot of time here and we want to make it worth our while. DOCTOR How many did you swallow? How many things did you swallow? MALE PASSENGER What? DOCTOR How many bags did you swallow? It’s on the X-ray. DOCTOR You need to tell me, so I know what kind of drug you have. Because if not, if one of the bags breaks, it can kill you. And we need to know so we can give you medicine. DOCTOR It’s on the X-ray. It showed up on the X-ray. DOCTOR It looks like he’s positive. FINN I heard the word positive; I don’t know if that’s the official answer though. DOCTOR He’s got quite an amount there. I asked him what he’s carrying, but he denies anything. He says he doesn’t know what I’m talking about. FINN But it’s positive. Ok, thank you. FINN Yeah, it feels great, I mean, you know when you get that it makes you feel like what you’re doing matters and you’re doing the right thing so stay on that same track. DOCTOR (Spanish, no subtitles) Sit up. And you’ll go with the officer. MALE PASSENGER Where we go? CIPRIANI You’re going to jail, that’s where you’re going. FINN We tried, Rafael. Hey listen, now it’s time to start getting it out okay. Now it’s time to start going to the bathroom to get it out. NIA SAINT He, we’re going to have to wait for him to be ready to pass, you know have a bowel movement, then we get the pellets or one pellet, whatever it is. Clean it up, sanitize it, then test it and find out exactly what it is. FINN Until one of the pellets that he passes actually tests positive for a narcotic, technically he’s not under arrest. Once that test is made, and it is a positive reading for narcotics, he’s officially placed under arrest for the importation of narcotics into the United States. NUGENT Right now the package and all the contents is going to go to our D.C. sack. If we can get this package on the flight and get it down to our agents in D.C., then we’ll be able to get an arrest out of it. LATTUCA The clock is ticking. NUGENT Hello, Nugent. NUGENT We just got a call from our D.C. office. The agents down there, they received the package, made it on time, they went out, they did a controlled delivery. NUGENT Okay, yeah, I’ll let him know. Okay, thanks, bye. LATTUCA No arrests, though. NUGENT No arrests, but they got really good intel. And actually from that intel they just found out about two targets that they did not know about previously. NUGENT This is part of a bigger investigation so any intel we receive is definitely positive. NUGENT In the long run, fantastic. LATTUCA Excellent. NUGENT Awesome. LATTUCA Alright. The work wasn’t for nothing brother. NUGENT See, it was worth it. Hustle baby, that's what you gotta do. Great, we made it, man. FINN So, he just passed some pellets, so now we’re going to test the pellets to see A) if they test positive for a narcotic, and if it does test positive for a narcotic, which narcotic it is, either heroin or cocaine. FINN I’m hoping it’s heroin; I’m hoping it’s drugs. Elias Uh, this is basically a condom, the guy just released it from his body and it’s in liquid form. FINN Yep. Elias Yep. FINN Positive for heroin. Elias Positive. FINN Ok. FINN So uh, now it’s official, it’s positive for heroin, so now he’ll officially be placed under arrest for the importation of heroin into the United States. FINN Our job is almost over, we’re going to hold on to the gentleman and make sure he passes all the balloons, you know, in a safe manner. And we’re going to collect them as evidence. And then we’ll be handing all the information and the gentleman off to our agents. FINN It’s going to equal about maybe a kilo of drugs that don’t make it to our streets, and don’t make it into the arms or mouths of our children. FINN We gotta do our job just like he’s trying to do a job. This time we won. And now I’m going to go home and sleep.
