JIMMIE AMBROSE Been good TIG Oh good Good to see you Man, I heard, I heard some bad news about your dog JIMMIE AMBROSE Yeah, got taken by the wolf TIG Show me the crime scene JIMMIE AMBROSE There was supposed to be a lunar eclipse So, I turned my lights off Forgot to turn 'em back on Woke up the next day and came down and TIG Oh He ate 'em right there, you know JIMMIE AMBROSE Yeah TIG That's just a little bit too close around town, I think JIMMIE AMBROSE Yeah TIG Just by seeing that this wolf sat there in the open, out of cover and ate most of this dog I can tell that he's hungry, you know, that's a dangerous situation to have a desperate hungry wolf around town TIG I kinda lost these tracks Once I pick up the tracks, I can pick up my speed and start to close the distance between him and I I just gotta follow these tracks around, I got my rifle with me and if I happen to see him, I'll take a shot This is a young wolf right here This is a lot fresher; you know, this might have been last night Okay, he came in and walked back out here Okay Oh, he did jump out onto the ice They use underneath this bank as a highway because there's no one ever down this way And so, no one is ever out here to see them And then the school is that direction and that's which way his tracks are leading And it's dangerous for all the kids The wolf, they're gonna take the path of least resistance If there's a snowmobile trail, that's gonna be the path of least resistance Next day, I gonna come through, see if there's any fresh wolf tracks over my tracks that I put down JOEL JACKO You're always kind of exploring out here I enjoy just finding an animal trail and just walking down it, see why it's there JOEL JACKO You know how I know it's moose hunting season? Cause it's raining and blowing nonstop JOEL JACKO I'm gonna leave the dog here 'cause he's gonna scare everything away JOEL JACKO Stay JOEL JACKO My dad was pretty adamant about not taking dogs moose hunting Moose will kick a dog in half At the same time, he's like my only buddy out here so it kinda sucks not having him with me We're off I only got a couple more days left of moose hunting season Got a pretty small window to get out there Try to find a moose JOEL JACKO Definitely picked the worst day JOEL JACKO To go moose hunting My one chance to try to get a moose I didn't get one last year so, I don't know I might be eating spam all winter We had record rainfall this year I wasn't really planning on coming up the river, but it's so high, still very dangerous Like that Dangerous 'cause the rivers moving so fast, you can flip your boat over Which has happened to me before, and I almost died Hunting moose is worth the work and the effort It would take me like a couple years to eat a whole moose We are at the, uh, edge of the lake now, up in, uh, Pile Bay It's actually just started snowing on the mountains JOEL JACKO If I was a moose JOEL JACKO I would be in there JOEL JACKO I think there's a moose right in here JOEL JACKO It must have came when I called it He came through here Looks like more than one though There's a bigger one and a smaller one JOEL JACKO A cow and a bull There's some poop there It's still warm Man, he was like just here JOEL JACKO Gonna try and call him back out JODY With winter on the way, the work is never over We have to act now JODY Well, this looks like the one JAMEY JOSEPH Yeah, this'll work Looks pretty straight JODY So, Jamey and I decided we wanted to try living in my home community JODY After Jamey's fish camp in the middle Yukon JODY We're really lucky to be buying this place from some friends JODY It's got good bones, but it's needed some work and repairs and so we're trying to make this house a home Hey, easy-peasy JAMEY JOSEPH Okay JODY Seems light now JAMEY JOSEPH Everybody seems to be wanting to hang out there on the balcony but it's kinda unsafe It makes a bunch of noises and creeks when you step out there JODY It's pulling the upper part of the wall out 'cause of the weight of this balcony JAMEY JOSEPH We're gonna have to, uh, sure this up, take this support system out and use these and go right to the ground with them Jack it up and, uh, take that pressure off that wall So, we're gonna put a plumb bob down, and, or a makeshift plumb bob cause I don't have JODY What's a plumb bob? radius of our community They know who I am, they know my scent I've been chasing a lot of these wolves around for many years TIG We go, three nights ago we gotten snow TIG See some more tracks right here, leading on this trail right next to our house TIG Yeah, I can see that this wolf has used my trail just like I thought he would TIG We use an outhouse, my little girls gotta go run out all night using the bathroom and what not Not a good situation having predators this close to my family I don't like it He isn't gonna be hanging around town hunting dogs, scaring kids We're about six miles (9 kilometers) back the Kanuti Canyon trail These tracks are still heading off that way This wolf knows he walked the community safely before so he's gonna come through it again But this next time he comes through, he's gonna start seeing my tracks He's gonna know I'm after him When you're chasing a wolf, they are a super smart animal You gotta be real cautious One time, I was chasing a wolf up the river, and he ran out towards the middle of the river, I kept following him Next thing I know, I was five feet (1 meter) from an open hole And that's exactly what this wolf wanted He wanted me to dry walk in some water It's dangerous to chase 'em You gotta be cautious, you gotta know what you're doing out here Some more tracks right here Fresh tracks, look like he is heading out I followed this wolf at least eight miles (12 kilometers) away from our house which is a lot better than the five-hundred feet (152 meters) he was under the bank I feel a lot safer sending my kids off to school knowing that this wolf has probably left town by now Hopefully we don't have to worry about him for a while JOEL JACKO You make decisions when you're hunting is sometimes a split second Whether or not to take the shot Whether to go left or right Sometimes it's hard to justify if you made the right or wrong decision JOEL JACKO Up the lake I go JOEL JACKO Yesterday was a pretty good day At least I saw some moose sign, I'm pretty sure there's moose back there I'm gonna run back there and, uh, hopefully I get something I just need one moose One The next couple days is my only option for moose hunting JOEL JACKO You know the animal's so big that it would, it can last you like all year Smells like bears Right there look, brown bear Right there look, brown bear It's not what I'm looking for So, I just bring it out to flat islands I already saw a bear I don't know if that's a bad sign or a good sign It's probably not a good sign Yeah, you can see in here, all the bushes are really low, it's cause the moose are hanging out here eating the, eating the tops of them Gotta be a moose out here somewhere JOEL JACKO Listening for, like, branches breaking JOEL JACKO Basically, anything moving through the woods JOEL JACKO Like antlers on trees JOEL JACKO Not hearing anything There's not a whole lotta moose around It's a little bit discouraging But I'll keep looking Thought I saw a moose I'm better off just waiting for a moose and then shooting a bear after moose hunting season There's obviously not a shortage of bears around here Been out here for like seven hours, six hours now, I'm not sure what time it is It's like six-o-eight looks like It's today or tomorrow before, um, moose hunting season's over This does look like really good moose country I'm a little bit worried now, I'm not gonna find one All I can do is keep looking TIG At this point in my life, is, upon me to start teaching my children, all my knowledge, my skills, my traditional sense That's the stuff that I'm passing down to my children TIG How you say marten in Denaakk'e? TIG Maybe a few days TIG Evan when he was about six or seven years old, I did take him out once and it was about thirty, thirty-five below His snow pants came up, had some of his skin was showing He got a pretty bad frost bite around his leg and after that I was kinda scared of bringing the kids out in the colder weather I freaked myself out having his leg frost bit that bad Got the ott? EVAN STRASSBURG Yup TIG It was just a few years ago that I'd started taking him back out and showing him how to set the sets again Just like that, take this wire, wrap it around You don't want to twist this one on too much You just want it enough to hold it on there So, when the marten get caught, this one's gonna fall off, he's gonna dangle down here And then when he dangle like that, he's gonna die a lot faster We just gotta let this guy sit and do his thing All right, my boy We got this one set Let's keep clearing the trail and see if we see any more tracks If we see any more marten tracks, we'll set another one DANIEL APASSINGOK It's a very harsh weather out here Very unpredictable Takes a lot of time and effort to have everything ready for the winter DANIEL APASSINGOK Ready? TIG Yeah, dead wood EVAN STRASSBURG We got dead branches right here TIG I'm pretty excited to see that my son is, he's growing Uh-oh You got 'em Good boy Uh-oh He's been out there enough He's tried hard enough These animals are starting to find their way to his traps now All right TIG I hope someday when I'm dead and gone, my boy, he'll know how to come out here and do all this types of stuff by himself because we're putting in the work right now DANIEL APASSINGOK It can be pretty, uh, hard out here It's a lot of hard work but you're not gonna be alone in this world There's people that love you, no matter who you are Everybody has to work together to survive out here JOEL JACKO This is Riddler Bay There was a big bull hanging out there couple years ago so maybe, maybe it's like the spot You kinda have to trust your intuition You can kinda tell places you think have moose in 'em JOEL JACKO I don't see any moose I'm already seeing like bear scat so I mean there's bears everywhere here I'm not like super worried about the bears Bears aren't like the stealthy thing You can hear 'em coming And most of them smell super bad so you can like smell 'em before you can even see 'em Hey look, bears have been scratching their claws on here You can hear 'em breathing, you can smell 'em coming, so They're not like this vicious, killing machine that, you know, movies portray that they are So, I think moose are more dangerous than bears are I think I've been charged by more moose than I have bears There's a couple of these little swampy lakes back here, hope maybe get lucky and I'd see something I just think there's way too many bears around There's just fresh bear sign all over the place There's probably still a couple fish in here so the bears are still really hanging out Super nice to be out Even though there's no moose and the bears are probably watching me from the bushes Lots of bears No moose Sad Joel
